What happens when a skeptical Oregon native encounters a Sasquatch in broad daylight, just before an important job interview? In this mind-blowing episode, we speak with an individual who had an unforgettable Bigfoot sighting near Cottage Grove, Oregon. Her story takes us to a quiet gravel parking lot, a moment of unexpected terror, and the breathtaking encounter with a creature that unfolded in front of her like a towering tree. With vivid details of reddish fur, massive arms, and a gut-wrenching sense of dread, this episode explores what it's like to see something truly unexplained — and the questions that linger long after the encounter. You'll also hear about the eerie disappearances in Lane County, Missing 411, and the deep woods of Oakridge, Oregon, where Sasquatch sightings are more common than you might think.Strange situation near Oakridge discussed in the episode: https://www.reddit.com/r/Missing411/comments/4rrxau/the_trap/

Reports of child sexual abuse in schools in Oregon have drawn outrage and concern in the communities where they have occurred. Researchers and therapists who focus on helping child abuse survivors have best practices and prevention strategies, but they don’t actually know how prevalent abuse is in the state. Oregon is not alone. According to the University of Oregon’s Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing, no state has yet taken that on. Center director Jeff Todahl intends to change that with a study that’s now underway. Researchers have already done a pilot program in Lane County and are confident the statewide study will be completed by year’s end. Todahl joins us to share what we know about how to prevent and respond to child abuse in Oregon and how it can be improved.

In October, Lane County signed a contract with Eugene-based Bulk Handling Systems to create a state-of-the-art recycling center unlike any other in Oregon. It will sort garbage and commingled recycling and produce methane from the organic waste, generating renewable natural gas. According to the county, it will be “the most technologically advanced waste processing facility in the country, diverting about 80,000 tons from the county’s landfill annually. That could extend the life of the county-owned landfill by 20 years, officials say, while reducing the amount of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Landfills are a major source of methane, which can also be harmful to human health. Steve Miller, the CEO of Bulk Handling Systems, and Lane County Public Works Director Dan Hurley join us to explain how this project came into being, its environmental goals and the implications for other metro areas with similar waste issues.

Abraham Coryell Edmunds, throughout his several careers in Oregon and California, was almost like a cartoon — a larger-than-life loser in the vein of Wile E. Coyote, with a little Carrie Nation mixed in along with a whole lot of Don Quixote. Nor were his “own-goals” minor affairs. A.C. Edmunds was almost singlehandedly responsible for the demise of the early Universalist Church in California, the temporary collapse of the Universalist congregation in Portland, and for the sudden death of the temperance and women's suffrage movements in Oregon in 1874. Before he got involved, Oregon was on track to become the first state in which women could vote. His efforts to help make that happen set the process back almost 40 years. ... Eager to get started on Smelt Sands Park, the state forcibly vacated Lane County's right-of-way on its 804 Road along the beach, and beachfront property owners quickly fenced it off. Oral Arguments for the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Laura Fenimore v. Lane County Republican Central Committee
Art in the classroom helps to keep learning active - that's the subject of this week's conversation between Colleen and her guest, Ben Minnis, Arts Education Program Coordinator with the Lane Arts Council in Eugene. With fifteen years as an early childhood educator, a BFA in Theatre Performance, and ongoing work in ceramic sculpture, acting, and playwriting, Ben speaks from experience when he explains that art in all forms allows students to approach school work as participatory rather than passive memorization. Drawing on his experience with the inquiry-based Reggio-Emilia approach to learning, he advises educators to explore the different ways that students can communicate knowledge and understanding. Students are able to construct their own unique ways of learning by using art as well as the usual oral and written formats. Ben explains how the Lane Arts Council supports Lane County educators in these efforts to integrate art in their curriculum. Artists are paired with educators not only to teach specific art forms, but also to augment classroom learning with hands-on creative work. Educators are urged to contact the Arts Council for more information about the Creative Link, the Artist Residence, and the Design Arts Apprenticeship programs. Columbia College, atop College Hill in Eugene, was founded just before the Civil War. It closed after pro-slavery board members took over, and its president skipped town while under indictment for attempted murder; but while it lasted, it gave Eugene a taste for the college-town life that led directly to the founding of the University of Oregon 15 years later. Today, Hunter is joined by Taylor Herbert, a Public Defender in Lan County Oregon to discuss civil commitment. As is often talked about on the show, the divide between the civil and criminal legal system is far smaller than many are willing to admit. Civil commitment is the process by which a person can be confined in a mental health facility against their will. Unlike a criminal process, which does not allow for you to be deprived of liberty unless you've been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, civil commitment allows for a deprivation of liberty after only reaching clear and convincing evidentiary standard. Why is this an issue? Why do we allow? What are the failings of civil commitment in Oregon? All that and more on this episode! Hearing loops are an assistive listening device that can significantly reduce background noise for hearing aid users. The device is relatively simple: a loop of copper wire encircles a desk, room or entire building, creating a magnetic field. People within that field can activate a particular setting on their hearing aids that allows sound from a microphone to be transmitted directly into their ear. Hearing loops are still gaining traction in the U.S., but the city of Eugene has looped nearly 60 locations, from hotel front desks to entire performance halls. As reported in KLCC, Travel Lane County was recently recognized by the Hearing Loss Association of America for its work to install hearing loops across the county. Andy Vobora is the vice president of stakeholder relations at Travel Lane County. Ginevra Ralph and Sue Prichard are the co-chairs of the advocacy group Loop Oregon. They join us to talk about looping, its implementation in the county and the difference it makes for people who are hard of hearing.

The City of Eugene helps run several types of homeless shelters and services along with Lane County and other partners. The city has cobbled together funds to keep them running until June 2025. After that, the city will have to figure out how to keep some services going that currently rely on one-time funds. Meanwhile, Eugene has already made budget cuts to some services, like its libraries, to prioritize other emergency needs. We learn more about Eugene’s approach to funding homeless services with Kelly McIver, a communications manager for the city.
(NOTE: For organizational reasons, this column is being published earlier than usual. You may already have heard this one.) The masked outlaw planned the job out carefully, and thought he was ready for anything. But he met his match in the cool-handed express man, and had to leave almost empty-handed. It’s been a few weeks since cold, ice and wind battered Oregon, killing at least 15 people and bringing much of the state to a grinding halt. The region has weathered many storms but this one prompted Gov. Tina Kotek to declare an emergency, enabling the possibility of federal funding and reimbursement to clean up the damages. We’re joined by Rachel Pearl and Chris Voss with Multnomah County, Drew Hanson with PGE, Jody Yates with PBOT, and Eve Gray with Lane County. We talk with them about the lessons they learned from the storm, and how they’ll apply them to the next natural disaster.
In this conclusion of a two-part episode, Kate and Paul return to Lane County, Oregon to discuss DNA collection and analysis. Could that possibly be how the perpetrator of this double-murder is finally apprehended? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Bosson's Bitter Whiskey And BananasEpisode 436 comes from a request by True Crime Historian patron Marlene Resch, who wanted to hear a story from her home Lane County, Oregon. So I dug up this sordid tale of a man who stands trial for the murder of his wife, with allegations of insurance fraud and lust for his young sister-in-law, who turns out to not have the best reputation herself.Culled from the historic pages of the Eugene Guard, the Eugene Morning Register, and other newspapers of the era.Ad-Free Edition
Veneta, Oregon in Lane County, bills itself as a “quiet, small-town community” with access to both natural areas and the amenities of the Eugene metro area. It’s the kind of place where neighbors help neighbors, as evidenced by the recent activity on the Veneta Community Network Facebook page. During last week’s winter storms, the message board was full of posts from community members offering to help tow stuck cars, bring food to families who were snowed in, and clear downed trees from roads and driveways. Stacy Thompson is the admin of the page. She joins us to talk about how the community pulls together in times of crisis and what others might learn from Veneta’s example.
Lane County was hit particularly hard by the recent winter storms that left many areas of western Oregon without transportation or power. Ice and snow led to downed trees, closed roads and extensive power outages in the county. Gov. Tina Kotek declared a state of emergency on Tuesday to help county officials access “critical federal resources to aid in reconstruction and recovery efforts.” That’s after the county Board of Commissioners declared its own state of emergency earlier that day. Laurie Trieger is the chair of the Lane County Board of Commissioners. She joins us with more details on the storm’s impacts and the county’s recovery efforts.
