My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lya Badgley, author of the book The Worth of a Ruby. Lya was born in Yangon, Myanmar. The child of Montana parents – a political scientist and an artist – she grew up in a household that encouraged critical thinking and creativity. After dabbling in retail management, Lya moved to the Pacific Northwest in the eighties, becoming a part of the Seattle arts and music scene. In the nineties, after a decade of life as a struggling poet/ musician, she returned to Southeast Asia as a videographer on a clandestine expedition interviewing Burmese insurgents. A year later, she was working as director of Cornell University's Archival Project, microfilming documents at Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide in Cambodia, helping to bring war criminals to justice. Finishing that, she managed the first foreign-owned project of its kind for the time, opening the 50th Street Bar & Grill Restaurant in Yangon, Myanmar. Since then, Lya has been an elected city council member and a dedicated environmental activist. She is a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association, the Pacific Northwest Writers Association, and Hugo House. Her first self-published novel, The Foreigner's Confession, was released to good reviews in February of 2022. Her second novel, The Worth of a Ruby, launched November 2023. Badgley lives in Snohomish, Washington, and is working on her third novel set in Bosnia. In my book review, I stated that I thoroughly enjoyed Lya's first novel, The Foreigner's Confession, and was super excited to get my hands on this one, The Worth of a Ruby, set in Burma. Badgley writes edgy international crime/suspense and gets the reader into the mind of her characters. Mallory Jones, a chef, like the author, wanted to open a restaurant in Burma but not because she was in love with the area. Instead, she was running from her past. However, as is wont when folks try to escape their past by running from it, the past found a way to erupt. As plans for a restaurant fall through, we see a side of Mallory that isn't evident in the beginning. The Worth of a Ruby has it all: great characters, amazing backdrop, kidnapping, blackmail, murder, and a bit of Burmese magic. Plus, in the words of the author, " I like ambiguous endings." This is the story of Lya Badgley, a woman whose life reads like an adventure novel filled with courage, resilience, and the pursuit of an authentic existence. Lya's story begins in the vibrant landscapes of Southeast Asia, where she was born. She traveled the world with her parents, and those travels would shape her world view. Lya shares how a diagnosis of MS led her to become ever more adventurous. “Choices that you'll make that appear reckless to the people around you and to society. But you're thinking, I don't care, right? What's the worst that can happen? I could die?” Thanks to MS, Lya faced a future filled with uncertainty. Instead of succumbing to fear, she embraced the unknown. Her illness became a catalyst for a life of unexpected adventures, from crossing borders into Burma to opening a restaurant in a foreign land. Lya's narrative is a powerful reminder that our most significant challenges can lead to our most extraordinary achievements. Through her story, we see the human side of illness—the friendships lost, the emotional toll, and the profound sense of loneliness that can accompany a diagnosis. But Lya's tale is not one of despair. It's a story of rebirth, of finding new ways to be and reinventing oneself amidst adversity. Her journey into mindfulness and meditation reveals a path to inner strength and the ability to make choices from a place of gratitude rather than bitterness. This conversation is an invitation to reflect on our own lives, our own bumps in the road, and how we might use them as portals into a more conscious and meaningful existence. So grab a cup of coffee, settle into a comfortable chair, and let Lya Badgley's extraordinary story inspire you to view your life's bumps not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth. And be sure to check out lay's books “ and “” which explore the themes of global conflict and personal resilience. What they're saying: “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. This book is a gift and a must-read for souls experiencing pain and yearning for growth.” –Gary Hensel Learn more at Follow Bump on: ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ➡️
Penn Badgley has made a career out of playing deeply troubled characters. From his role as Joe Goldberg on the Netflix series “You” to Dan Humphrey on “Gossip Girl,” Badgley has shown many times over how obsession and delusion can destroy love.In his personal life, though, Badgley says he's not doing too much brooding. He's a father and a stepfather, and he opens up about the importance of being vulnerable with his kids. Badgley reads “Watching Them Watching Me” by Dean E. Murphy, an essay about a father who can no longer hide his emotions from his sons after they all experience a devastating loss.
I'm with my friends at Remington Hospitality hosting their annual conference. I love their corporate culture, so I grabbed their Chief HR Officer Rick Bagley to ask them about their secret sauce.

Mark Badgley and James Mischka launched their eveningwear-focused fashion brand, Badgley Mischka, 35 years ago. In the years since, the company has expanded to various product categories, largely through licenses. Most recently, it entered the prestige fragrance space through a partnership with Horizon Beauty Group — the first fragrance debuted at the brand's Fall 2024 fashion show on Saturday. On this New York Fashion Week edition of the Glossy Podcast, Mischka discusses the evolution of the business, including its marketing strategy that now centers on influencers. He also talks about the brand's beauty ambitions, which include rolling out products in categories beyond fragrance.
My guest for this episode is Aaron Badgley, who joins me to discuss his book on Dark Horse Records, the label started by George Harrison in 1974. Aaron tells us the story of the varied collection of artists on the label, and how as a commercial venture, it wasn't quite what George had hoped it would be.

The Titans' final week of the preseason included New England's decision to cancel joint workouts between the teams prior to their game on Aug. 25, the news that cornerback Caleb Farley's father was killed in an explosion that destroyed Farley's North Carolina home, and the news that former Tennessee wide receiver decided to end his NFL career at 28 years old and with one year remaining on his contract with the New York Jets. ... Davis was not as good a player as the Titans hoped when they selected him fifth overall in the 2017 draft, but he played one of the best games of his career against them in 2021, his first season with New York. ... The battle between young kickers Caleb Shudak and Trey Wolff ended when both were released and veteran Michael Badgely was signed. Badgley had a brief and disastrous stint with Tennessee early in 2021, and coach Mike Vrabel made it clear that Badgley might not last long this time either. ... A minor injury kept rookie quarterback Will Levis out of the preseason game at Minnesota. That allowed Malik Willis to play the whole contest and potentially stake his claim as Ryan Tannehill's backup. The Titans won that game, but Willis did not necessarily help his cause. ... Speaking of the backup quarterback battle, the San Francisco 49ers' decision to make Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, their No. 3 (at best) opens the door for some interesting possibilities for the Titans, whose general manager (Ran Carthon) was in San Francisco when Lance was drafted. ... Kyle Philips became the second Titans wide receiver in as many weeks to sustain a knee injury. His issue followed the one for Treylon Burks. Each is expected to miss a matter of weeks and uncertainty about their availability for the start of the regular season will make final roster decisions much more difficult.
After releasing kickers Trey Wolff and Calen Shudak, the Titans signed kicker Michael Badgley. Could Badgley be the answer to a struggling kicking team, and why have the Titans had trouble finding a reliable kicker? We've also have an update on QB Will Levis and other players.

Creating a human-centered work culture is the antidote to the burnout that is now pervasive in the work place. While learning how to create a human-centered work culture is of particular importance to managers and leaders in organizations, it is not for them alone. Brains love patterns and, without intentional engagement, people carry this dehumanizing relationship with work when they leave a particular workplace and even into their own entrepreneurship. So, regardless of your current work or workplace, we all need tools to intentionally engage our relationship to work. Being able to understand, create, and advocate for healthy boundaries in work is a skill that benefits everyone. In this episode of Unlimited, I invited Marissa Badgley, MSW to join me in a conversation about creating a human-centered work culture. Some of what we talk about in this episode includes:Why companies need an intentional cultureThe importance of compassion AND accountabilityThe multiple layers and impact of trust in organizationsSetting boundaries and creating team buy-inWho gets a seat at your table and creating a safe tableThank you for listening! If you enjoyed this episode, please share it! In this episode, we have special guests Kelly Jean Badgley and Christopher Driscoll joining us. We talk about their spiritual journey, Kelly's website, Peace Room Love and how they combine Reiki and ASMR. Kelly Jean Badgley is a voiceover artist, Reiki Practitioner, and online content creator. A second-generation Reiki Master, her Reiki training began in Boise, Idaho with her mother Jenny Stinson of The Peace Room where Kelly Jean received Reiki I & II training. After experiencing the profound, life-changing effects of Reiki for herself and others, Kelly Jean continued her training, which now include her receiving Holy Fire® III Reiki Master, Holy Fire® III Karuna® Master, Animal Reiki Master, Medical Reiki Master, and Reiki Drumming. Kelly Jean's reiki practice and classes are informed by a lifelong curiosity and appreciation for health and wellness, including hatha yoga training and certifications, spiritual practices such as Nichiren Buddhism and meditation, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping, and more recently, remote viewing. Outside of Reiki, Kelly Jean's voiceover work includes animation, commercials, audiobooks, online corporate trainings, IVRs and voicemail greetings, podcasts, meditations, etc. Some of Kelly's clients include Netflix, Nickelodeon, Pandora/Sirius XM, etc. She also voices and produces the podcast 5 mins of Peace. Most recently, Kelly Jean has blended her experience with Reiki and voiceover to produce This ASMR Reiki Life, a YouTube based Reiki Channel that brings together Reiki healing experiences with the phenomenon known as ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). Combining the two modalities into a single experience is an obvious, albeit challenging and rewarding new avenue for Kelly Jean and she is enjoying learning more about the online format and how to leverage it for her Reiki practice. Website:https: //www.thepeaceroom.love/about-kelly-jean Website:https: //www.kellyjeanbadgley.com/ YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/@ThisASMRReikiLife Christopher Driscoll is associate professor of religion studies at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. His books and teaching take place at the intersections of religion and spirituality, race and social identity, and the power of belief and disbelief. He is the author of numerous books on topics such as race and religion, hip hop culture, and mountaineering religions; and, he has lectured extensively across the U.S. and internationally in universities, religious and spiritual communities, and various corporate settings. Having spent the first half of his adult life believing himself a skeptic and an atheist, a single distance reiki session several years ago transformed his life. Driscoll had spent many years using the tools of scholarship to try and convince others that belief in God or forces we cannot see was dangerous and should be avoided. He is now in the process of unlearning and relearning how to use those tools in order to empower others both inside and outside of academia. His collaboration with Kelly Jean Badgley, This ASMR Reiki Life, is one example of this process unfolding, and he is exploring film and online video for the presentation of his work. His latest book, White Devils, Black Gods: Race, Masculinity, and Religious Codependency (Bloomsbury, 2022), chronicles much of his recent personal transformation that took place alongside his research into a little known black American spiritual community called the Nation of Gods and Earths. While the book began as a way to tell the peculiar story of how race and gender and history impact this community's belief that the white man is the devil, it evolved to include a deeply vulnerable account of Driscoll's own personal growth made possible by an unflinching confrontation with the devil within. In this episode, Michael speaks with Danny Cullenward. Danny is a lawyer and climate economist working on the design and implementation of scientifically grounded climate policy. He is the Policy Director at CarbonPlan and a Research Fellow at American University's Institute for Carbon Removal Law & Policy. He holds a PhD and a JD from Stanford University. Danny talks with Michael about his book, Making Climate Policy Work , which he co-authored with David Victor. In this book, Danny and David critique the dominance of carbon markets in the climate change policy space. They argue that such markets are layered onto existing regulations that are doing most of the work to mitigate carbon emissions. A central challenge that markets face is that their implementation is highly political and often coopted by those who are regulated. Danny and David also discuss carbon offset policies, which is essentially a payment for ecosystem services scheme that is often added to carbon market policies to provide regulated actors with an option to pay for carbon sequestration elsewhere to enable them to keep polluting where they are, with the presumption that the carbon budget can balance out. Danny and David are also critical of these, in particular due to their lack of additionality, or the lack of credible proof that the carbon sequestration being paid for is occurring because of the offset program and wouldn't have happened without it. Danny and Michael conclude the conversation by talking about the future of voluntary carbon markets and the promise of carbon removal technologies.
