From AI-generated deep fakes to lightning-fast social media rumors, disinformation is reshaping our reality. In the wake of Donald Trump's shooting, falsehoods flooded our feeds faster than facts. The problem of disinformation, the deliberate spread of false or misleading information, isn't new, but the stakes are high in this critical election year. In this monthly installment of “Meet the BIPOC Press”, we ask: Who are the targets of disinformation in the run up to the 2024 election and why? Joining Laura are Tamoa Calzadilla, the editor and chief of Factchequeado, a collaborative initiative to combat mis- and disinformation targeting Latino and Spanish-speaking communities. Esosa Osa is the founder of Onyx Impact and the former Deputy Executive Director of Fair Fight Action, the voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams. Esosa has just released the first report of its kind looking at disinformation specifically in Black online spaces. Kadia Tubman is a disinformation correspondent for Scripps News, a national broadcast news channel based in Atlanta. What is media and government's role in halting the spread of disinformation? Our guests share what concerned citizens can do right now to protect fact-based reporting.Guests:•. Tamoa Calzadilla: Editor in Chief, Factchequeado•. In this episode, we delve into an event that marked a profound shift in America's role on the global stage—the sinking of the USS Maine. Set sail with us to the late 19th century, when the United States was but a budding world power, and Cuba was ablaze with rebellion against Spanish rule. We'll drop anchor in Havana, where the USS Maine met her tragic end in an explosion that claimed the lives of 260 sailors. We will scrutinize the question that gripped a nation: was this a sinister act of sabotage, or a catastrophic accident? Navigate the murky waters of initial investigations and their conflicting conclusions. Then, we'll steer you through the media storm fuelled by Yellow Journalism that whipped the public sentiment into a fury, bearing the slogan 'Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!' Finally, reflect on this watershed moment that plunged America into the Spanish-American War, altering the course of the nation's history. The epochal sinking of the USS Maine, far more than a naval disaster, stands as a symbol of America's transformation into a formidable global power.

Well, 3CG-ers, that foray into watching films in color was short-lived. We're going back to black (and white) with a 1941 classic, and we'll give you one guess as to who picked this one. Our old-soul-black-and-white-morality-raised-on-the-classics millennial, Hannah, picked our second movie for November and what is arguably one of the greatest films ever made, “Citizen Kane”. Orson Welles wrote, directed, and starred in this classic 2-hour epic that much like “Halloween”, breathed a gasp of fresh air into modern-day cinema. Funnily enough, it took us about 2-hours to discuss this masterpiece, but don't worry, unlike certain past episodes (“They Live” looking at you), we actually discuss the film. We know you guys like it when we steer away from political discussions and talk about the movie, but when the flashback-laden narrative shows how an aging publishing tycoon lived his life through corruption and political intrigue, it's hard not to steer into the present, and draw direct correlations to current and historical figures. You'll want to skip this episode if you are not a fan of the G&H show as the two of them discuss the beauty of this film in great detail, while the rest of the boys struggle to keep up. Poor Matt always gets a little foggy when things are in black and white, and Terry, coming off a long drive from an overnight set, didn't have enough C-4 in his system to fuel his smart-ass, inappropriate remarks. Is this the episode with Terry's lowest word count? Will Matt ever learn to appreciate black-and-white films? What did Garrett say to Hannah that had her refuse to speak? Will she ever forgive him? You'll have to listen to find out. Show notes/CW This episode contains/mentions the following: Suicide, Child abuse, Sexual assault, Violence against women, and Sex work. In this episode, longtime US foreign policy author and critic Ted Carpenter talks about his new book cataloging the editorial crimes of the American press corps, starting with Yellow Journalism and the Spanish American War, through Vietnam, the Iraq War, and Ukraine today. Media bias in favor of American primacy and exceptionalism has allowed Washington to not only get the public behind their political wars of choice but stay in them long after they've been lost. In the second segment, Kelley and Dan talk about Russia's apparent plans to annex four areas of Ukraine and what that will mean for the U.S.-NATO proxy war moving forward.More from Ted Carpenter:Unreliable Watchdog: The News Media and U.S. Foreign Policy -- Scheduled for release Nov. 29, 2022Uncle Sam's Long Trail of Wreckage -- The American Conservative, 9/28/22North Korea Is A Nuclear Weapons State. Summary Alex Finley (Twitter; Website) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss life as a CIA Reports Officer turned author. She lives in Barcelona. What You'll Learn Intelligence Her take on CIA analysts vs. case officers Information and disinformation in fact and fiction Ukraine, the 2016 election and the Russian historical playbook The regularity even mundanity of much of daily intelligence life Reflections Being an American in Barcelona Viewing your own country from outside the goldfish bowl And much, much more… Episode Notes Alex Finley spent 6 years in the CIA as a Reports Officer - whom she describes as a bridge between the case officers and analysts. She is author of a trilogy of novels on the exploits of fictional CIA officer Victor Caro. Her most recent book, Victor in Trouble, completes the series (…or does it?) by looking at Russian influence operations and the contemporary intelligence landscape through a satirical lens. She now lives in Barcelona, Spain - and yes, apparently it's as awesome as it sounds! – and she is the voice behind #YachtWatch, which tracks and exposes the activities of Russian oligarchs and their superyachts. And… Satire is often described as fitting into three categories: Horatian, which offers light comedy and social commentary (e.g., Pride & Prejudice, Parks & Rec, The Colbert Report); Juvenalian, a darker and more abrasive take that can often take the form of speaking truth to power (e.g., Animal Farm, American Psycho, South Park) and Menippean, which casts moral judgement on beliefs or generic character flaws (e.g., Alice in Wonderland, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Saturday Night Live). Which one does Alex use? Quote of the Week "There, there were points where I found myself in the middle of nowhere, West Africa. And there are these moments where…how did I end up here? This makes zero sense. And then there were the bureaucratic Catch-22s." – Alex Finley. Resources *Andrew's Recommendation* Who are the Russian Oligarchs? From the Godfather to the grandfather of modern cinema… This week, we're taking on another epic American classic, considering one of—if not the finest film ever made: Citizen Kane. From the technical cinematic innovations of young director Orson Welles to the timeless tale of a media magnate turned political hopeful, Citizen Kane proves painfully resonant with the world of today. We explore the twists and turns of this slanted biography, one haunted by the figure of Kane, who, himself, remains voiceless. We track the historical evolution of mass communication and media that gave rise to Kane's real-world analog, William Randolph Hearst—and the Yellow Journalism wars that precipitated a real-life international conflict. Ultimately, in the search for truth, we are always missing a piece of the puzzle—whether we're looking for the truth about a man's life, a nation's foundational myth, or human nature itself. — Support us at www.patreon.com/midnightmyth Check out our merch store for Midnight Myth, Boomerangerang, and Wheel of Ka tees and totes! Episode geeklist Joe Schmidt (corsairjoe) Now I've gone back to my usual format where I explore a single topic in games, books, films, and whatever else I can find. The Spanish-American War is similar to a lot of topics I've dived into--it's something I felt like I knew something about, but not too much. Also matching the pattern, it's been a subject I thought would be rather small and self-contained...only to find out it has larger implications and resonances to today's world. I swear, that just keeps on happening. Probably like a lot of people, when I think of the SAW I think of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, "Remember the Maine," San Juan Hill, and Cuba. Other topics might come to me if I concentrated on it, but not as readily: the Philippines, American imperialism, Yellow Journalism, Puerto Rico, and the US Navy. I think Cuba's much longer internal struggle for independence was largely unknown to me. In this Part 1 episode, I close by giving a quick rundown of the games in my geeklist on the subject, many of which I have played or will play by the time I record Part 2 to conclude the topic. However, the beginning of this podcast features a full interview with designer Joe Schmidt. Joe caught my attention when his little game Kettle Hill was about the Rough Riders' and Buffalo Soldiers' famous assault that was part of the Santiago campaign in the SAW. What's more, Joe won the Charles S Roberts award for the Amateur/Print-and-Play category. As you'll hear, Joe designed Kettle Hill as a PNP title during the coronavirus pandemic as a way of doing something for the hobby. I'm glad the hobby recognized him in return. Joe has a few games with a distinct aesthetic, both in small footprint and graphic design. He's also got several other projects in various stages of completion, such as his collaboration with other designers for the French Resistance game In The Shadows, which has already made the cut with GMT's P500 system. There's another title that will be of special interest to fans of the Levy & Campaign series that started with Nevsky. I didn't even realize it until after I switched off the recorder, but Joe was giving me a scoop for his new game in that series! Just like when Volko gave me a scoop for Nevsky back in episode 14.2! Wow, I'm a journalist! -Mark

Everyone hates the modern media, but when did the modern American media actually form? The invention of cable news? The Yellow Journalism of the late 19th Century? The answer is much older, and it's all Mexico's fault. (Sort of. Not really at all, actually.)
Journalists are supposed to follow the principles of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity and public accountability. But that wasn't always the case for Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. Today we're going to talk about how their desire to beat each other led to the era of Yellow Journalism and reshaped Journalism as we know it.

This week we're joined by Jordon of the 805UNCENSORED podcast, who tells the story of media mogul William Randolph Hearst. After inheriting wealth and a newspaper from his father, Hearst builds a ruthless media empire. He comes to own a quarter of the newspapers in America, reaching 20 million readers daily. Popularizing the term “Yellow Journalism” – a highly sensationalized form of reporting – Hearst even peddles a myth about the Spanish attacking the USS Maine to catapult America into war with Spain. His greed-based racism drives his campaign to demonize weed, which he refers to as “marijuana” in order to associate the drug with immigrants from Mexico. Tune in to hear more about this ruthless, racist capitalist. You can find 805UNCENSORED on Apple, Spotify, and wherever you podcast. While “fake news” has become a concern in recent years, America has seen its periods of untrustworthiness in media before. In this episode, Mary, Gary, and Eryn explore the agendas of media tycoons like Pulitzer and Hearst during the age of “yellow journalism.” Did these big players overstep their boundaries by reporting rumors over facts to drive sales? How should we as a culture balance the rights of the First Amendment while also being truthful, responsible agents?
We join our Preceptors for the premiere episode of Season 3 for a smoke session in conspiracies with Marijuana. We elevate ourselves in discussion about the plant itself and how it got its status it has today within our society. (4:05) Mike fires up some facts about hemp. The boys elaborate and discuss cultures that used hemp/cannabis. (7:12) It is mentioned that there hasn't been a single recorded overdose or death associated with cannabis. (8:52) Fronk brings the Native American cultures to light and their uses for the plant, as well as the founding fathers of the USA. Some of them include George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. (10:14) Mike delivers some facts about marijuana and the beginnings of cannabis and hemp prohibition. The Preceptors also discuss the Federal Government's scheduling of the drug, which is in the same schedule as heroin (13:45) We ask the question; when will cannabis be legal federally and explain a little more about dispensaries. (15:09) We talk about some of the uses of cannabis, especially medicinally. We also talk about the taxes and revenue of the industry as well as states with legality still have people incarcerated for cannabis. (19:06) We talk about Henry J Anslinger (head of Federal Bureau of Narcotic Drugs) and his comments about cannabis shortly after the prohibition of alcohol was lifted. Some of these comments are absolutely absurd. (21:40) Fronk tells us a drug story in the wild. (22:31) Andrew Mellon, a businessman who was a principal shareholder for Dupont. The hemp industry was threatening the lumber industry. He appointed a family member, Anslinger, to do his work on cannabis. (27:05) Mike introduces William Randolf Hurst, also who had high stakes in lumber, came together with Anslinger and Melon to squash hemp. Mike also brings up the decordicator, a machine that processes hemp incredibly fast. (29:36) Fronk talks to us about "Yellow Journalism," the OG fake news. Hurst reported on a car accident where a marijuana cigarette was found, demonizing the plant even further. We go further and introduce Nixon's war on drugs. (32:20) Unfortunately, the war on drugs was fueled mainly on racism, and your Preceptors discuss (34:20) We go into the DARE program a little bit, their changes on their view of cannabis. We explore the term, "marijuana is a gateway drug". (37:00) Fronk mentions some uses for medical cannabis and the boys touch on why big pharma is pushing against cannabis legalization. We discuss in detail. (43:39) Mike blows some facts about cannabis and its use in the USA through some smoke. (46:34) Dave and Mike give their opinions of this topic. In his acclaimed biography Eye on the Struggle: Ethel Payne, the First Lady of the Black Press (Amistad, Reprint Edition, 2017), James McGrath Morris explores the fascinating life of pioneering black female journalist Ethel Payne. Backed by exhaustive archival research, Morris traces Payne's role in documenting the civil rights struggle during the decades following World War II, before her later impact as the first female African American radio and television commentator on a national network. The New York Times has described Eyes on the Struggle as an “an important and often absorbing new book,” while the Chicago Tribune has contended that Morris' beautifully written and carefully researched new book “gives Payne's ground-breaking work the attention it deserves.” Morris' other books include Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power, which Booklist placed on its 2010 list of the ten best biographies, and The Rose Man of Sing Sing: A True Tale of Life, Murder, and Redemption in the Age of Yellow Journalism, which the Washington Post named as one of its Best Books of the Year. His most recent work is The Ambulance Drivers: Hemingway, Dos Passos, and a Friendship Made and Lost in War which will be published in April 2017 by Da Capo Press. Learn more about your ad choices.
