To celebrate our 100th case, we discuss the women who inspired Maureen Dallas Watkins' play and longest running musical, Chicago. During the height of prohibition the beautiful and classy pair ended up in Cook County's murderess row after being charged with the murders of their lovers. Belva Gaertner, the real life counterpart to Velma Kelly, was accused of shooting her lover after a drunken fight in her own car. After weeks of dominating the newspaper headlines, she had competition when Beulah Annan, counterpart to Roxie Hart, joined the cell block after shooting her lover while her husband was at work. Join in as Savannah and Elysia put on their 100 year old personas and dance to Hula Lou, Beulah's favorite song. We discuss the crimes, trials, and how it was that they were acquitted. Haldane Drama to perform saucy musical New York has done well by Chicago. The musical, which has been performed more than 10,000 times over the past 28 years on Broadway, will have its Haldane Drama debut from March 22 to 24 on the gritty stage of the school auditorium. It has long been on director Martha Mechalakos' punch list. Based on a satirical mid-1920s play written by a Chicago Tribune reporter, it focuses on the trials and tribulations of a gaggle of newly emboldened women accused of murdering their husbands. They work the legal system to draw attention to themselves - stories you might hear today on a true-crime podcast. The source material proved fruitful to John Kander, who wrote the music, and Fred Ebb, who wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book with choreographer Bob Fosse. Presented in a vaudevillian courtroom setting, with many direct addresses to the audience, the show serves up two killers and assorted raucous denizens who plead their case through dance and songs such as "All That Jazz" and "Razzle Dazzle." The Haldane production has benefited, Mechalakos says, from the guidance of Christine Bokhour, a veteran Broadway actor who choreographed. "The story, music and lyrics are all so dang good," says Bokhour, who performed in the musical on Broadway and national tours. "It has revenge and redemption and is chock full of catchy tunes and phrases, then the vaudeville timing - Fosse was born to a Chicago vaudevillian and was a child prodigy tapper - and pace keep you riveted. The dancing sends it to another level. "The precision Fosse demanded is the most challenging aspect for untrained dancers," she says. "Aside from the athleticism in much of his work, there is a seeming simplicity when you watch Fosse dancers. But the amount of control it takes to execute those moves and isolations is underestimated - maybe not so much now by the Haldane kids in this production; I haven't been easy on them. "Fosse can be hard even for trained dancers. It's a style all its own created from his particular set of physical idiosyncrasies. I haven't replicated the Broadway show here - I can't even do that choreography now - but there are some places I've used original or close to original choreography where possible." Christine's husband, Ray, who spent the better part of 22 years playing Amos Hart in Chicago, mostly on Broadway, has also provided guidance to the actors. (The couple met in 1999 on a national tour.) Mechalakos says the Bokhours "bring the insider knowledge of all the bits that aren't written in the script, which is so much fun for the Haldane actors. And Christine donated several pairs of her Broadway performance shoes. Everyone wanted to wear the shoes that touched a Broadway stage." "I love watching light bulbs go on for kids when they grasp a move or a joke or a moment," Bokhour says. Amelia Alayon as Roxie Hart Elaine Llewellyn as Velma Kelly Merrick Williams as Billy Flynn Oliver Petkus as Amos Hart Lucia Petty as Mama Morton Molly Bernstein as Little Mary Sunshine With all the razzle-dazzle, Mechalakos feels that many productions of Chicago don't focus on what the show is actually about, which is "our national obsession with celebrity and scandal and the media obsession with such. It's about inequity and corruption in our criminal justice system, and the cynical idea that crime pays and it's a circus act, all show business." The students will perform the "teen edition" of the musical, which does not include the songs "Little Bit of Good" and "Class" and has other trims and substitutions. Chicago opened on Broadway in 1975 and ran for two years with Chita Rivera (who died Jan. 30) as Velma Kelly and Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart. Jerry Orbach represented law and disorder as attorney Billy Flynn. The show was revived in 1996. Haldane Drama will perform Chicago at 7 p.m. on March 22 and 23 and at 2 p.m. on March 24 in the school auditorium at 15 Craigside Drive in Cold Spring. Tickets are $15, or $8 for seniors an...

This week on Tuesday January 30th the theatre community lost two very important and influential members Chita Rivera & Hinton Battle. Today we turn our focus to Ms. Rivera who was not only a multi awarding artists (including two Tony Awards for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Drama League Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom) but also a performer who was the consummate professional who worked tirelessly at her craft and lit up the stage with her dazzling charisma and incredible dancing. She was a true trailblazer whether it was through her origination of many iconic stage roles like Anita in West Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, Velma Kelly in Chicago, Anna in The Rink or Aurora in Kiss of the Spiderwoman or through her accolades including being the first Latina and the first Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor in 2002. She was someone who continually inspired and mentored so many artists and had one of the most infectious laughs that could fill up any room she was in or an stage she was on. Chita Rivera was a true old school Broadway artist who kept their head down and focused on their work and we will certainly not see the likes of her again any time soon. So in honour of her passing we are revisiting our episode on Bye Bye Birdie which is the musical she earned her first Tony nomination for. We will also dive deeper into her work this season when we tackle Kiss of the Spiderwoman in a few weeks. But for now listen and enjoy this special tribute to a one of a kind artist. Now, DiForte is touring the country for the first time on the national tour of the hit Broadway Musical, Chicago. In this show, she plays June and dances in the ensemble. Additionally, she understudies the role of Velma Kelly, and she has gone on multiple times playing this part. Madeleine Corliss is a true triple threat. She is an actress, singer, and dancer who has been able to performed in some of the most beloved shows. Some of the shows she has been able to take part in are Urinetown, Spamalot, and Chicago. In fact, Corliss has been able to play both female leading roles of both Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart in the different variations of the show that she has done. Corliss is a graduate of Syracuse University where she got to be in the same space academically with Mary Kate Morissey (Season 1), Jonalyn Saxer (Season 1), and Hannah Corneau (Holiday Special). When Broadway.com was searching for a new Roxie Hart to bring to the Broadway stage, Corliss auditioned and made it to the semi finals. Although she didn't make it to the finals and become the name on everybody's lips in NYC, it was still an honor for her to take part in a competition like this. Outside of musical theatre, Corliss runs an energy healing/coaching business called The Energy Studio, and has a podcast of her own along with this side project. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

What does mental health look like in one of the most cutthroat industries in the world? Can a late-in-life ADHD diagnosis ever be a good thing? And must the show always go on? In this week's episode, actress Nikka Graff Lanzarone talks mental stamina, why certain mental health conditions go underdiagnosed in women and the “epiphany” of being diagnosed with ADHD at 37. “There's also like a certain amount of grieving that comes with [being diagnosed], that you're like, ‘Oh, so it didn't have to be like this my whole life. Cool.'” Nikka also explores how her battle with depression and anxiety shaped her as a performer, and the natural therapy of dance. “When you're dancing, you don't have to deal with any of that. All you have to do is say whatever it is you're trying to say and you don't have to talk. … I get a break from having to be myself and dealing with my s*** for two and a half hours. I get a break from me.” For Nikka, an important facet of her acting career is something that goes hand in hand with mental health – the work she does as a labor advocate. “We are desperately trying to change that [‘show must go on'] culture. I'm an elected official in my union also and part of like a grassroots progressive organization that [asks], but why … why? It doesn't have to be this way. Who said it had to be this way?” In This Episode Nikka's showbiz family and how she got her start (02:31) The journey to Nikka's recent ADHD diagnosis “epiphany” (10:10) How ADHD affects men and women differently, and why it goes undiagnosed in many women (12:29) Connecting with family members who don't have mental health conditions, and the “relief” of starting medication (14:35) The role of mental stamina in an emotionally and physically taxing industry (20:45) Nikka's labor advocacy and the myth of “the show must go on” (28:57) Performance as therapy (33:11) The impact of COVID-19 on Broadway and Nikka's mental health (36:03) Dealing with anxiety as a performer (43:39) Our Guest Actress Nikka Graff Lanzarone is a showbiz veteran with credits ranging from Velma Kelly in Broadway's “Chicago” to hit TV shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Inventing Anna.” As a labor advocate, Nikka serves as a councilor of Actors' Equity Association and is a delegate to the New York City Central Labor Council. Book Vs. Movie “Musicals in March” The 1926 Play Chicago Vs the 2000 Filmed AdaptationOur second pick this month for “Musicals in March” is Chicago which has a rich history in two important cities--Chicago and New York City. The original play was based on the true-crime work of Maurine Dallas Watkins--a journalist and playwright who had a flair for juicy dialogue. Born in Louisville, Kentucky sometime around 1896 (the state has no record of her birth) Watkins was ambitious enough to try her hand at playwriting when most women were not taken seriously as writers. On the advice of one of her instructors, Watkins moved to Chicago to work as a newspaper reporter. Her time at the Chicago Tribune only lasted eight months, but her coverage of accused murderers Belva Gaertner and Beulah Sheriff Annan caused a sensation with the “jazz babies” entering the imaginations of millions of readers. (She later felt guilty about making them sound more charming than they deserved.) After joining the Yale School of Drama, she wrote the play “The Brave Little Woman” with characters “Roxie Hart” and “Velma” which later became Chicago. After a respectable run on Broadway (the touring company included a then-unknown Clark Gable), she went on to write 20 more plays and became a Hollywood screenwriter. By saving and investing her money, she made a fortune and retired to Florida when not traveling the world. She was never married or had children and died quietly in 1969. After her death, stars Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse bought the rights to Chicago and partnered with John Kander and Fred Ebb to work on the music & score after their combined success with Cabaret. The 1975 production was a slow burn due to the illness of Verdon until Liza Minelli subbed for her. The musical would lose most major TONY Awards to A Chorus Line but it went on to become a $2 billion franchise and the second longest-running show on Broadway since the revival in 1996. The basic story of Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly, Billy Flynn, and “Mama Morton” is one of the old adages “if it bleeds, it leads” with the media portraying the boozy dames as 1920s nouveau heroes. The songs are some of the catchiest you will ever hear in one show including “All That Jazz,” When You're Good to Mama,” Roxie,” “I Can't Do it Alone,” and “Nowadays.” Rob Marshall directed the 2002 film that stars Renee Zellweger (Roxie,) Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma,) Richard Gere (Billy Flynn,) Queen Latifah (“Mama” Morton,) John C. Reilly (Amos Hart,) Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine,) and Taye Diggs as the Bandleader. So, between the original play and the musical adaptation--which did we prefer? It was only three months after opening the new production of Les Miserables at the refurbished Sondheim Theatre that the show closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, after 2 years since the production opened, Josefina Gabrielle is back on the West End stage playing Madame Thénardier. With the West End now fully lit up, Josefina took some time to talk to us about the new production of the iconic show and what it has been like portraying the deliciously wicked character. She tells us very eloquently on the universality of the show and why the the message still resonates so strongly with audiences today. Indeed, Les Miserables first arrived on the London scene in 1985 and yet audiences are still returning to the show today. With rousing numbers like One Day More, Master of the House and I Dreamed a Dream, Josefina tells us about how comforting it has also been to work on such a hopeful show during what has been a very dark time for many people. For nearly 30 years, Josefina Gabrielle has dazzled audiences across the country and even on Broadway. A three-time Olivier award nominee, Josefina has cemented herself in the industry as one of the West End's finest leading ladies, taking on roles in both high profile musicals like the National Theatre's Oklahoma! opposite Hugh Jackman as well as taking on dramatic roles like in Tonight at 8:30, a collection of Noël Coward plays at Chichester. Nikka Graff Lanzrone is a musical theater performer who has starred in all different types of shows in the Big Apple. Her Broadway debut was in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In this show, she starred alongside icons in the community such as Brian Stokes Mitchell, Patti LuPone, and Laura Benati. Her most recent show that Nikka did on Broadway was the current revival of the hit Broadway musical, Chicago where she played the rebellious Velma Kelly. (The role played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the film) Getting to perform songs like All that Jazz and Cell Block Tango while doing Fossee choreography on a Broadway stage was a huge dream of hers and is something that she'll never forget. Fun Fact: Nikka's parents are also Broadway performers. They met originally doing Grease together (in the original company) and her mom, Ilene Graff was the first Sandy replacement. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support
Don't forget to catch Ariana DeBose hosting SNL on Sat, Jan 15th 2022! Broadway News The Broadway League has updated its vaccination and mask policies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as cases and hospitalizations continue to rise due to the Omicron variant. The biggest change is that children ages 5-11 will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, beginning January 29. The current vaccination and mask policy for adults and children over the age of 12 will remain in effect through April 30, extended from February 28. This policy states theatregoers are required to show proof that they have had their second dose at least 14 days prior to the show. Audiences must also wear a mask for the duration of the performance. New York City Center will now require audiences to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination plus a booster shot. A negative test result for audience members, including children, will not be accepted as an alternative. Audience members who are not yet eligible for a COVID-19 booster will still be able to attend performances, provided they show proof that they are two weeks past a one-dose vaccine or both doses of a two-dose vaccine. Once eligible for the booster, audience members will have a two-week grace period in which to obtain the booster for entry. The Public will also now require proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination and booster, effective January 21. Winners for the 2022 Golden Globes were announced on January 9. Notable News: Pass Over had their official opening night on Sunday and the reviews are in! Broadway World's Christian Lewis said, “If we can follow the lead of this production, Broadway can pass over into something different, something better, something more equitable and diverse, something more political.” NY Daily News's Chris Jones said, “Pass Over” is a Biblically moralistic work that calls out white America, declares that Black lives matter, and demands structural change, especially regarding the police." Time Out's Adam Feldman gave the play 4 stars and said, "Pass Over is a risky enterprise—a serious non-musical show, opening in the summer amid a public-health crisis—and although Pass Over deals with questions of escape, it is far from escapist entertainment." The Broadway League recently announced that they will not publicly share grosses for the 2021-22 season. Moulin Rouge cast members will headline the 2021 US Open opening night ceremony. The Actors Fund revealed that performer Debbie Allen, philanthropist Niko Elmaleh, producer Stacey Mindich, and “Stars in The House” creators Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley will receive The Actors Fund's Medal of Honor at their 2021 Gala. Casting: Edmund Donovan heads to Broadway this fall in Lynn Nottage's latest play Clyde's. He completes a cast that also includes the previously announced Uzo Aduba, Ron Cephas Jones, Reza Salazar, and Kara Young. Leading the cast, casting office Stewart/Whitley revealed on a now-deleted Instagram post, will be Ana Villafañe (On Your Feet!) as Roxie Hart, Bianca Marroquín (a longtime Roxie in the revival) as Velma Kelly, and Tony winner Lillias White (The Life, How to Succeed…) as Matron Mama Morton. On June 6th, 1981, audiences were given access to the Australian premiere of Kander & Ebb's masterpiece CHICAGO - A Musical Vaudeville. The production debuted at The Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House and made history. The production was conceived entirely by a local team who were not obliged to follow any blueprint from productions gone before.J.C. Willamson and Paul Dainty produced the show on tour, but CHICAGO in Australia was originally presented by The Sydney Theatre Company where the Artistic Director was Richard Wherrett. The show was directed by Wherrett and he assembled a team of master creatives, some who were at the beginning of their theatrical careers. They included Ross Coleman, Brian Thomson, Roger Kirk, Peter Casey, Michael Tyack, John Scandrett and Sue Nattrass in various roles.Wherrett's vision to bring a musical fare to a subsidised company was revelatory. In his program notes he wrote “ ….. the job of such companies is to present, amongst other fare, the best of existing dramatic literature; and the musical, while a latter development of theatrical expression, is as legitimately deserving of our attention as any other theatrical form.”The STC production of CHICAGO was a big, fat hit and showcased the extraordinary talents of a host of our established and emerging musical theatre best - Nancye Hayes, Geraldine Turner, Judi Connelli, Jack Webster, George Spartels, Terrence Donovan, Robina Beard, Kevan Johnston, Joy Miller, Peter Cousens, Garry Ginivan, DJ Foster, and Rod and Dolores Dunbar have all contributed to product in the decades since. This CHICAGO was certainly a milestone production of the show, and of the form in Australia. For our 200th episode, STAGES is joined by “Chicago's own killer dillers - those two scintillating sinners”, Australia's original Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly; Nancye Hayes and Geraldine Turner. A nostalgic episode celebrating the ruby anniversary of this seminal production. The STAGES podcast is available from Apple podcasts, Whooshkaa and Spotify. True crime has always been a thing. Back in the 1920s, all of Chicago was obsessed with the celebrity criminals of Murderess Row -- so obsessed that a Chicago Tribune reporter wrote a play about them, which became the 1975 musical Chicago, and the 2002 Best Picture-winning film Chicago. Our Curious Cocktail this week is the Southside:Ingredients:1.5 oz gin1 oz lime juice.5 oz simple syrupKind of a lot of mintMuddle the mint with the simple syrup or sugar in the bottom of a shakerAdd the gin and lime and shake with iceStrain into a tall glass with fresh iceTop with sparkling waterThis week, we're curious about catnip, Hot Cat Summer, Golden Girls Summer, briffits, plewds and grawlixes, washing your face, fairy trails, Kevin Truong's Mai American, and of course, Muppet Girl Summer.Selected sources:The Girls Of Murder City by Douglas Perryhttps://nypost.com/2010/08/08/the-girls-of-murder-city/https://www.silkstreetjazz.co.uk/jazz-age-cocktails-every-bootlegger-would-be-proud-of/https://chicagology.com/notorious-chicago/beaulahandbelva/
HE HAD IT COMING...or did he? This week, we take a look at the true stories that inspired the musical, Chicago. First, Rachel tells the story of Beulah Annan, the inspiration for Roxie Hart. Beulah was born in a small town but had dreams of someday moving to the big city. After her first marriage, Beulah connected with Al Annan. They married and moved to Chicago. Everything would change for Beulah on April 3rd, 1924 when Beulah was arrested for the murder of her lover, Harry Kalstedt. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Did they both reach for the gun?? Next, Nathalie covers the case of Belva Gaertner who inspired the character Velma Kelly. Belva was accused of shooting and killing her lover, Walter Law. He was found in the front seat of Belva's car with a bottle of gin and a gun lying next to him. Belva was found at her apartment covered in blood. She claimed to not remember what happened that night. It would be up to an all male jury to decide her fate. The AMPire Diaries Episode 26: “Ghost World” | “Ordinary People” AMPies, assuming you even read these show notes (and you should, as they are great), I (hi, it's LaToya) need to let you know that I am so exhausted—as you can probably tell from the fact that I am dropping this episode at 3 a.m. on a Friday night/Saturday morning. So I'm just gonna get right to it. This week's episode is all about “Ghost World” (Season 3, Episode 7) and “Ordinary People” (Season 3, Episode 8) , and here is what we're talking: - Jeremy's body. - Damon saying "spitroasted.” - Righteous piss baby Alaric Saltzman. - Caroline doing God's work (dunking on Jeremy). - These rude ass characters talking while Bonnie does a spell. - Jill's ghost trust issues. - The mythology of the Originals. - The AMPire Diaries Episode 5. - CAVE BOYS. - Fred Dick's revenge. - Slimer. - The Michael J. Fox series Spin City. - Good boy Mason Lockwood's favorite show, The Vampire Diaries. - The Roxie Hart to Katherine's Velma Kelly. - Jill finally gets one of Morgan and LaToya's TV references. - Klaus Mikaelson and his ChalkZone. - Elena leaving Rebekah to sob openly in the Salvatore living room (lol). - This possibly being our final episode of the podcast. And yes, before you tweet or email us, I know I forgot one Jeremy/Caroline interaction. Back in Season One, before Duke's party. (A reminder: Read these show notes so you can know if we address something we forgot to address on the pod proper. Because we do that often!) “SPIRITS AT THE NIGHT OF ILLUMINATION” (“Ghost World”) “ORIGINAL PEOPLE ORIGINAL FAMILY” (“Ordinary People”) The more AMPED logline this time around? Well, “Ghost World” is definitely the dorkier one, because it mentions the Night of Illumination, which is a pretty dorky town event. Looks like “Ordinary People” wins by default. In the Mood for Chaos: A Riverdale Roasting and Recap Podcast
This week, if you thought things were wild before, things take a SHARP turn into the even wilder. Alice helpfully explains what slut-shaming is, the show manages to do Ethel dirty even worse than the comics did, knock-off Velma Kelly threatens to boil a boy alive in a hot tub, and the football team is keeping a log of their sexual exploits...except it's lies? Riverdale, as it turns out, is actually trying to say something about...like...society, man. Shockingly, they do a piss-poor job. This leads to Miranda having a fit of apoplectic rage, and Evelyn very concisely translating said rage into more coherent criticisms. Also...what does the 'KJ' in KJ Apa stand for anyway? (And seriously though: Don't look up 'sticky maple') Content Warnings: - Altered mental states - Drug use/mentions - Body shaming/fatphobia - Interrogation - Misrepresentation of mental illness - Sexual exploitation - Pedophilia - Racism Music: 'Imps' Mark Revell
It's after midday and she's on the phone... Joel and David are beyond shook to be speaking with Grammy-winning, multi platinum-selling superstar Mýa in this very special episode of Right Back At Ya!. For over two decades, Mýa has been a force to be reckoned with in the industry, turning out global hits like 'Case of The Ex', 'Ghetto Superstar', 'Lady Marmalade', 'Free' and more. She can sing, she can dance, she can act, she can produce, and run her own label... is there anything this multi-hyphenate can't do? In this fabulous and heartfelt chat, Mýa discusses her breaking into the industry as a teen, the story behind 'Case of The Ex', her experience making 'Lady Marmalade' (with Christina Aguilera, P!nk and Lil' Kim), her favourites on the "Moodring" album, and the sonic suggestion Prince gave her. She also reminisced on filming "Chicago" with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger, and explained what happened to her hotly-anticipated Broadway debut as Velma Kelly. Mýa is, without doubt, one of the first 2000s pop/R&B stars we saw deftly navigate her way into a successful career as an independent artist. Joel and David chat with her about the ill-fated "Liberation" project that led to an unexpected but freeing new chapter in her career, and her gorgeous new single 'Space & Time' - the healing bop we all need in 2020. There's so much more to this inspiring and brilliant artist than meets the eye! We hope you too will fall head over heels with Mýa after listening to this episode. A career retrospective with Renée Zellweger from November 26, 2019. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Renée Zellweger is one of the most cherished and respected actors in modern cinema. Zellweger is most notably known for her starring role as the seminal British everywoman in the film BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY and its sequel BRIDGET JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON, both opposite Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. In the first installment of the franchise, Zellweger earned her first Oscar® nomination, also earning Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA nominations, among others. The sequel delivered her another Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. She secured her second Academy Award nomination as convicted killer Roxie Hart in CHICAGO, the Oscar®-winning film version of the Tony Award-winning musical. Acting, singing and dancing alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, who portrayed fellow death row inmate Velma Kelly, Zellweger took home a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, among other awards. She later earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Anthony Minghella’s COLD MOUNTAIN, the Civil War drama in which she jumped off the screen as feisty farm worker Ruby Thewes. For her work in the film, Zellweger also garnered a Golden Globe Award and best supporting role honors from the Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and Broadcast Film Critics Association. Zellweger will next make her television debut starring in Netflix’s WHAT/IF, and her recent films include BRIDGET JONES'S BABY, alongside Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey for Universal Pictures, the film adaptation of the book SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, opposite Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou, and THE WHOLE TRUTH, opposite Keanu Reeves. After graduating with an English degree from the University of Texas, Zellweger did some initial film and television work before making her feature debut in Richard Linklater’s seminal coming-of-age film DAZED AND CONFUSED. Other film roles quickly followed, including Ben Stiller’s REALITY BITES, LOVE AND A .45, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION and MY BOYFRIEND’S BACK. Zellweger won the affection of audiences soon after with her breakthrough role opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s JERRY MAGUIRE. Subsequent film roles for Zellweger have included the acclaimed ONE TRUE THING with William Hurt and Meryl Streep, the dark comedy NURSE BETTY opposite Chris Rock and Morgan Freeman, ME, MYSELF & IRENE opposite Jim Carrey, the drama WHITE OLEANDER with Robin Wright and Michelle Pfeiffer, Peyton Reed’s romantic comedy DOWN WITH LOVE opposite Ewan McGregor, and director Ron Howard’s Depression-era boxing drama CINDERELLA MAN with Russell Crowe. She has also lent her voice to such animated features as DreamWorks’ SHARK TALE, BEE MOVIE and MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

Velma Kelly may or may not actually be a supporting character in “Chicago,” but Catherine Zeta-Jones hits all of the BSA notes in her award-winning performance in the 2003 Best Picture winner. But it was a big year for women in film--in particular, Meryl Streep, nominated across both categories for her work in “Adaptation.” and “The Hours,” which we spend at least a few hours queening out on. We also discuss Renee Zellweger’s award-worthy turn as Roxie, Queen Latifah’s Gloria Stuart nomination, John C. Reilly signature dope energy, Richard Gere's tapping, of course Christine Baranski, and at least briefly, Michelle Williams in “Fosse/Verdon.” Follow us! Gin! Jazz! Guns! YESTERDAY’S NEWS -- Tales of classic scandals, scoundrels and scourges told from historic newspapers in the golden age of yellow journalism... The Real ‘Chicago’ Murders Episode 252 explores the two murders that inspired the hit musical “Chicago,” which was based on a play by Maurine Watkins, who did some reporting on both cases as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Susan will read about the case of Beulah Annan, who became Roxy Hart on stage. I will read the case of Belva Gaertner, who became Velma Kelly.
