Russell Little was a boy from Amarillo, Texas who met the right woman and moved to Houston. He's also an attorney with over 40 years of practice experience in domestic and criminal law. While we do share some war stories and lawyer talk, among other things, our focus was on his two Amazon best sellers in the Mystery and Thriller category. Described as a combination of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen, Little weaves a tapestry of schemes, double crosses, corrupt lawyers, detecting and countermoves, all in the environment of Houston, Texas. There's crime. sex, hurricanes, and all manner of scenarios that you'll want to absorb before his third book comes out later this year. He's also a huge fan of The Expanse. Nuff said.

Michelle Monaghan is an all-time favorite. Not only was she one of the very first guests on Collider Ladies Night back in 2019, but she's also an especially wonderful interview. She speaks of her work with great passion, and also deeply cherishes memories of her most influential scenes partners — and she has many of them. Yes, Vince Vaughn is on that list, but there's another member of the Bad Monkey ensemble who made an indelible impression on her as well.Based on Carl Hiaasen's bestselling novel, the Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey stars Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, a detective who got the boot from the Miami Police Department and sent to the Keys where he's further demoted to a health inspector. However, when a human arm is fished out of the water in the area, Yancy can't help himself; he's got to prove that this individual's death was no accident, but rather, a murder. Trouble is, he no longer has the resources and support to crack the case, and must sort through a string of unusual personalities to find answers. Complicating matters further for Yancy is Monaghan's character, Bonnie, a mysterious woman he had an affair with and keeps coming back to.In celebration of Bad Monkey's August 14 debut on Apple TV+, Monaghan returned to Ladies Night to dig into her collaboration with Vaughn and a few other past co-stars who heavily contributed to Monaghan's confidence in her craft and goals for the future. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The American Library Association found that the number of books facing challenges for censorship is up 20 percent for the first eight months of this year compared to 2022. That includes more than 800 books in school districts across 37 states. More than 300 books were removed from Florida schools last year, according to a list released by the Florida Department of Education. Some of those books, written by author Carl Hiaasen, who knows this landscape too well. The longtime Miami Herald national columnist and author has witnessed several of his books be removed from schools, prisons, and libraries. He's already had several events canceled on the nationwide tour of his latest young adult book, "Wrecker."We discuss the banned book environment, and the impact these bans have on students and libraries nationwide. According to Amazon, Tom Shroder is an award-winning journalist, editor, and author. His most recent book, "The Most Famous Writer Who Ever Lived: A True Story of My Family," an investigation into the life of his grandfather, Pulitzer Prize winning author MacKinlay Kantor. Book critic Susan Cheever said, "In writing a history that is also a meditation on writing, Shroder has created a book that is as useful as it is fascinating." Shroder is also the author of "Acid Test: LSD, Ecstasy, and the Power to Heal," selected as a Washington Post notable book of 2014. His earlier book, the best-selling "Old Souls," is a classic study of the intersection between mysticism and science.Shroder is also co-author, with former oil rig captain John Konrad, of "Fire on the Horizon, the Untold Story of the Gulf Oil Disaster." Sebastian Junger, author of "War" and "The Perfect Storm," says of Fire on the Horizon, "It's one of the best disaster books I've ever read.. . I tore through it like a novel, but with the queasy knowledge that the whole damn thing is true. A phenomenal feat of journalism."As editor of The Washington Post Magazine, he conceived and edited two Pulitzer Prize-winning feature stories. His most recent editing project, "Overwhemed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time," by Brigid Schulte, was a New York Times bestseller. In addition to being an author and editor of narrative journalism, Shroder is one of the foremost editors of humor in the country. He has edited humor columns by Dave Barry, Gene Weingarten and Tony Kornheiser, as well as conceived and launched the internationally syndicated comic strip, Cul de Sac, by Richard Thompson. With humorist Barry and novelists Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard, he concocted and edited "Naked Came the Manatee," a satirical serial novel.Shroder was born in New York City in 1954, the son of a novelist and a builder, and the grandson of MacKinlay Kantor, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his civil war novel "Andersonville." Shroder attended the University of Florida where he became Editor of the 22,000 circulation student daily newspaper despite the fact that he was an anthropology major (an affront for which the university's journalism faculty was slow to forgive him). After graduation in 1976, he wrote national award-winning features for the Fort Myers News Press, the Tallahassee Democrat, The Cincinnati Enquirer and the Miami Herald. At the Herald he became editor of Tropic magazine, which earned two Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure.Shroder is also known for his creation, along with Barry and Weingarten, of the Tropic Hunt, which has become the Herald Hunt in Miami and the Post Hunt in Washington, a mass-participation puzzle attended by thousands each year.
From renowned veterinarian Dr. Doug Mader comes a stirring account of his fight to protect his animal patients and human staff amid the dangerous realities of inner-city life and the Los Angeles riots—and a celebration of the remarkable human-animal bond. The life of a veterinarian is challenging: keeping up with advances in medical care, making difficult decisions about people's beloved companions, and, in Dr. Doug Mader's case, navigating the social unrest in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. As one of the few exotic animal experts in California, he was just as likely to be treating a lion as a house cat. The Vet at Noah's Ark: Stories of Survival from an Inner-City Animal Hospital follows Dr. Mader and his staff over the course of a year at Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital, an inner-city LA area veterinary hospital where Dr. Mader treats not only dogs and cats, but also emus, skunks, snakes, foxes, monkeys, and a host of other exotic animals. This real life drama is set against the backdrop of the trial of four police officers in the Rodney King case, as well as the violent aftermath following their acquittal. This is a book about survival, both of the pets that Dr. Mader and his staff try to save on a daily basis, as well as the staff themselves. Living in the harsh reality of the city, surrounded by gangs, drugs, violence, traffic, smog, and deadly riots, they must overcome and rise above, for their own survival and that of the animals who need them. This awe-inspiring account is told through Dr. Mader's riveting storytelling―as Carl Hiaasen writes, "Doug is fearless and dedicated," and "a damn good storyteller."
In 1953, Carl Hiaasen was born in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. A period of time when kids could hang out in wooded areas chasing things that kids chase. Many days were spent on bikes with fishing rods, well before the boom of growth. Their fun house would soon be transformed into parking lots and buildings, a solid reason for his irreverent thoughts. He and his best friend, Bob Branham, soon learned how to navigate around Biscayne Bay chasing their beloved bonefish. “Carl always wrote," said Bob, and would test those waters with a newsletter in school. His classmates liked it and the fire was lit. Throughout his career he became a prolific author and journalist. With thirty one books and forty six years at the Miami Herald, he'd see it all as a writer. He'd amass numerous awards for both skills sets. Two of his books, Hoot and Strip Tease, became movies and Bad Monkey is now being adapted into a series for Apple TV. When I asked the great Tom McGuane to speak of Carl's work he said, "Carl Hiaasen is a great American writer, a comic genius and fearless journalist. He has made South Florida a world map of human folly, malicious schemes and indifference to the common good. In his novels there's usually a decent survivor of this milieu to remind us that it doesn't have to be this way, that there is hope, and that constant vigilance against the insane and corrupt is an indispensable tool for life in America.” Carl grew up fishing as often as he could, usually with his good friend Bob Branham. They both became two of some of the best bone fishermen in the Keys. Carl has won probably the most prestigious bonefish fly tournament in the world, “The Fall Fly," six times, and won the Bonefish All Tackle Tournament four times with good friend and guide, Capt. Tim Klein. The trump card is that Carl Hiaasen is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet! We hope you enjoy this remarkable man's story...

Christopher Paolini drops by the Story Craft Cafe again to talk about his new releases this year, a sci fi thriller follow up called Fractal Noise, as well as his return this fall to the world of Eragon. Christopher was homeschooled by his parents. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely. Some of his favorite books were Bruce Coville's Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, Frank Herbert's Dune, and Raymond E. Feist's Magician (now available in volumes one and two), as well as books by Anne McCaffrey, Jane Yolen, Brian Jacques, E.R. Eddison, David Eddings, and Ursula K. Le Guin. The idea of Eragon began as the daydreams of a teen. Christopher's love for the magic of stories led him to craft a novel that he would enjoy reading. The project began as a hobby, a personal challenge; he never intended it to be published. Before he began writing Eragon, he plotted out the entire adventure. He found that doing some of the same things as his characters allowed him to better understand their world, as well as to think of descriptions that otherwise would not have occured to him. To this end he forged his own knives and swords, made chain mail, spun wool, camped in the Beartooth Mountains, made his own bow, built survival shelters, learned to track game, fletched arrows, felled trees, hiked, and camped. In short, the books embody a great deal of his experience of living in Montana. His work also combined elements gathered from research and from his imagination. He read a huge amount of folklore while growing up, ranging from the Brothers Grimm to Beowulf, Nordic sagas, and the Aeneid, along with contemporary fantasy and science fiction. In addition, he learned about weaponry, food, clothing, and customs from the Middle Ages, which is roughly the era he envisioned Eragon living in. Armed with that information, he daydreamed the scenes with his characters. Then he took pen to paper and tried to recreate those images with words. Christopher was fifteen when he wrote the first draft of Eragon. He took a second year to revise the book, and then gave it to his parents to read. The family decided to self-publish the book and spent a third year preparing the manuscript for publication: copyediting, proofreading, designing a cover, typesetting the manuscript, and creating marketing materials. During this time Christopher drew the map for Eragon, as well as the dragon eye for the book cover (which now appears inside the Knopf hardcover edition). The manuscript was sent to press and the first books arrived in November 2001. The Paolini family spent the next year promoting the book at libraries, bookstores, and schools in 2002 and early 2003. In summer 2002, author Carl Hiaasen, whose stepson had read a copy of the self-published book while on vacation in Montana, brought Eragon to the attention of his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf Books For Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children's Books. Michelle Frey, executive editor at Knopf, contacted Christopher and his family to ask if they might be interested in having Knopf publish Eragon. The answer was yes, and after another round of editing, Knopf published Eragon in August 2003. The book immediately became a New York Times Best Seller. https://youtube.com/live/qzyaqkPntK0

In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with CJ Williams about the importance of looking after wildlife and protecting the environment. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/CJ-Williams Highlights from today's episode include: CJ Williams some of the messages in there really brought it home to me about this need, and the lack, if you like, or the lack of education, our children do get in the regular curriculum. To know more about this, and actually, as I've got more into it, I'm actually astounded by not only the lack of knowledge within children, but also adults as well about animal species CJ Williams But more than that, I think a lot of them do stress the importance of the work in terms of yeah, nothing is being done about this to educate kids. And, the main point about the whole message is for children to learn about it, whilst they're having fun. So, to play a board game with their family is a positive thing anyway because it gets them off the screens, which there's always too much CJ Williams And it is some of that as well, of course, but that really at the end of the day, if one reader, one child can become a zoologist or, or a conservationist, hopefully a marine biologist, as a result of being inspired by reading my stories, then that will be it for me that that I will be satisfied, you know, so, that will have sort of complete the healing process, if you like from someone who has come full circle from being like you said, you know, naturally aware of the importance of nature and the other species and everything surrounding us to go into a different world and then coming back again into recognizing the importance of that. ABOUT CJ WILLIAMS CJ Williams is one of six siblings and is a former City of London trader, who was also an independent headhunter in financial markets. He came up with his brand altogether, which he will establish as a recognized player in the educational technology sector. His ultimate aim is to fund a charity called RACE - Raising Awareness in Children of the Environment. As a parent, grandfather and country boy at heart, he is passionate about looking after the countryside and ongoing green issues, to Save The Planet. His inspiration originally came from the likes of Carl Hiaasen, the investigative journalist and hilarious author, the respected conservationist Rachel Carson and, more recently David Wallace-Wells as well as the brilliant Sir David Attenborough, of course. He has three sons by wife Justine: Oliver, Jack and Hugh, and they are grandparents to Louie, Ella and Freddie. He wants to help parents reclaim their children from screens with the launch of his book series and a double-sided, fun and fast family board game with a wildlife and environment protection theme, for two to four players from the age of 4 to 104 called Planet B Race all about animals - their habitat, bodies, diet and threats and good and bad things impacting the environment. This is a book talk about Chomp by Carl Hiaasen
On Episode 191, Alli and her guests finally explore the wacky world of Carl Hiaasen as it's written in the 2003 Newbery Honor-winning novel Hoot. They chat about environmental advocacy, adults in kid lit, depictions of police institutions, and the importance of making kids feel respected by the books they read.Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick are co-authors of the New York Times bestselling novel She Gets the Girl. Rachael is also the author of The Lucky List and the co-author of Five Feet Apart and All This Time. They live in Pittsburgh with their dog, Hank. We're 8 weeks into the Biden administration and things definitely feel different. But how much has changed? We'll check in today with David Dayen, excutive editor of The American Prospect, where they're keeping a comprehensive record of all the administration is doing. But we'll start with the place I live, FloriDUH and our moRonic governor Death Sentence. Unfortunately, the slimy politics neither begin or end with DeathSentence... he's just our current sideshow. My friend and neighbor 'Boca' Britany Somers joins me to help tell the story of the former state senator Frank Artiles, who was arrested yesterday for his role in putting up a fake candidate to steal a seat in the legislature from the Democrats. If only Carl Hiaasen were still writing his column for the Miami Herald. His regular contributions ended this week after brilliantly telling the tales of the state in this forum since 1985. A big loss for us all.
