The legendary jockey's sudden retirement announcement in December caught the NZ racing industry by surprise. Opie says he'd been contemplating retirement for six months but it took a simple experience on Xmas Day to convince him the time was right. The champion jockey was out jogging on Xmas morning, wearing his mandatory heavy sweat gear when he was suddenly conscious of passers by in high spirits, out enjoying life on such a special day. Opie was unplaced on 3 rides at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Driving home to Matamata after the races he made the massive decision to call time on his stellar 30 year career. He says the withdrawal symptoms have been manageable so far. Opie says he was a little hesitant as he sat down to type out his retirement announcement for release on social media. The jockey says weight issues have plagued him for many years. He explains just how tough it's been over time. He reminds us that he walked away from racing more than twenty years ago when wasting got the better of him. He spent eighteen months out of the industry during which time he gave the rugby code some serious attention. Kiwis and Australians alike have been curious about the champion jockey's unusual christian name. He puts forward a simple explanation. Opie talks about an apprenticeship to his godfather Steve Autridge, at the time head trainer for the Te Akau machine. He says Autridge has been an important influence in his life. He talks about the TeAkau training operation at Matamata, and the breathtaking environment of Te Akau Stud in the Waikato, where it all begins for the David Ellis homebreds. Opie was happy to wander down memory lane. He's never forgotten his very first day as a professional jockey. His first winning ride in 1995 left an indelible memory. The brilliant jockey announced his arrival in a big way. He was only 17 when he won his first Gr 1, the 1998 Auckland Cup on Jezabeel. Opie wasn't retained on Jezabeel in the Melbourne Cup of the same year but was lucky enough to get on a wonderful NZ staying filly during the same carnival. He won the historic Victoria Oaks on Grand Archway. Shortly before that Melbourne carnival he made a quick trip to NSW as a favour to a young Kiwi friend who was just getting started as a trainer in Sydney. He happened to ride the trainer's first Australian winner in an obscure maiden at Wyong. Opie looks back on some stunning NZ career statistics. He makes no secret of the fact that the brilliant sprinting mare Imperatriz was his all time favourite. He talks about the brilliant mare's best performances. Second only to Imperatriz on Bosson's list of favourites is the dynamic Melody Belle. He looks back on 6 Gr 1 wins on the wonderful mare. He was delighted to partner Melody Belle in her only Australian Gr 1 victory. He speaks with great admiration of another top tier Te Akau mare, the talented Avantage. He rode her in eight of sixteen wins which included five Gr 1's. Opie looks back on his association with several other exciting horses he got to ride in the famous tangerine and royal blue Te Akau colours. He makes special mention of the lightly raced Te Akau Shark. He says we never saw the best of this exciting Rip Van Winkle gelding. The 99 time Gr 1 winning rider devotes extra time to his memories of Mongolian Khan, the top class stayer who gave him victory in two of Australia's most famous races. Opie came back to ride him in three Sydney races the following autumn, but says he wasn't the same horse. The jockey pays a warm tribute to Mongolian Khan's trainer Murray Baker. The newly inducted retiree speaks of his three children. He and first wife Samantha Spratt are the parents of 19 year old Cody who shares his father's love of hunting and fishing. Opie talks of the two younger children he shares with second wife Emily- Max who's six, and daughter Honour who's nearing three years of age. The Auckland Racing Club acknowledged Opie's impact on NZ racing when they released a special audio presentation a few years ago. Whenever the jockey won a race at the Karaka Millions meeting the catchy chant of “There's Only One Opie Bosson” resonated through the public address system, generating great crowd involvement. He talks of his reaction to a rare honour. Great to catch up with a jockey who was appointed an Officer Of The NZ Order OF Merit in 2023 for his services to racing.
Champion New Zealand Jockey Opie Bosson has retired after a several decade career. The Thoroughbred racing jockey decided it was his time to go after giving all he had to give. TAB Trackside spokesperson Aidan Rodley said he is one of New Zealand's greatest ever jockeys. Rodley joins the show to discuss this and what's to come in the following weeks for racing. A lot of us feel like we don't deserve to have our dreams come true or have good things happen to us, and sometimes, no matter how far we've made it or how much we've already accomplished, we still don't feel content. Why is that? The answer isn't an easy one. Most likely, it's when we grapple with feelings of self-loathing or self-hatred. Self-loathing is defined as a hatred for oneself that often manifests as anger, self-sabotage, a negative view of oneself, and low self-esteem. Jim and Mike talk to Holly Hutchison about being an early champion for such artists as Blink 182, Alanis Morissette, Muse and many others. We talk about her career as an A&R person and her work with promoting and guiding new artists with her own company "AnR Girl". Believe it or not Mike, Jim and Holly all graduated from the same High School! ABOUT HOLLY: Holly Hutchison Weinman is a business executive with over 34 years experience in the music and entertainment industry. She is a visionary with a passion for new ideas, branding and cultivating identity. Her professional experience, A Level Repertoire, and deal making abilities draw largely from major recording corporation environments and highly successful mentors in New York City (Atlantic Records – a Time Warner Company) and Los Angeles (Capitol Records/EMI) where she held top ranking executive positions before venturing out on her own as a well respected, detail oriented and creative business owner. As an independent she has closed deals with Jason Flom Lava/Republic, Doug Morris former CEO Sony Music Entertainment and more. Holly built her credibility through a consistent track record of identifying artists who have proven to be successful – some being Skid Row, Deftones, Alanis Morissette, Blink 182, Slipknot, Muse, Saliva, Bosson and Vega 4. In Fall 2016, Holly took on management of the multi-platinum hard rock group SALIVA. She has enjoyed a long standing friendship with the group after being a first champion of SALIVA in 1998 while she was an A&R Executive at Capitol Records and the band were looking for a major label home. Unfortunately, Capitol Records did not sign SALIVA but the rockers went on to have a successful career at Island Records under music experts Rob Stevenson, Jeff Fenster and Lyor Cohen. Holly would remain a friend, business ally and mentor over the course of the next 18 years. In the two years of management, she doubled the group's gross income, released an independent single that has accumulated over 14 million streams through her marketing and landed Saliva a deal with Megaforce/Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment. The recording studio is a second home to Holly. She has extensive A&R experience that covers all aspects of album production and song selection for pop, rock and rap genres. She has worked with top multi platinum and Grammy award winning producers, mixers and songwriters such as Timbaland, Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Red Sun Rising), Jimmy Douglas, Peter Mokran, Ron Aniello, Josh Abraham, Al Sutton (Greta Van Fleet, Kid Rock), Michael Brauer (Coldplay), Dave Way (Christina Aguilera), Diane Warren, Billy Steinberg, Monty Powell (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts), Jack Kugell, Kirsti Manna (“Austin” Blake Shelton) and Steve Kipner, just to name a few. Show Notes for Episode Twelve of seX & whY: Sex and Gender Differences in CPR Part 3 Host: Jeannette Wolfe Guest: Dr Justin Morgenstern Here is a link to Justin Morgenstern's awesome First10EM blog site where you can find an excellent review of the two papers that we discussed today: Perman's DNR paper and Huded's Cleveland Clinic Study on gender gaps in 30 day survival after ST elevation myocardial infarctions. Here are some take home points for this podcast: We don't know what we don't study and when we don't consider sex and gender as legitimate variables, we can inadvertently miss opportunities to improve the health of all of our patients. There appears to be lots of sex-based differences in cardiac electrophysiology females are more prone to AV nodal re-entrant arrhythmias, sick sinus syndrome, prolonged QTc and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome males are more prone to AV block, early repolarization, Brugada's syndrome, accessory pathway-mediated arrythmias, idiopathy ventricular arrhythmias and dangerous arrythmias associated with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathies In many ways, biological sex represents a much “cleaner” variable to study in that most of us have a sex specific chromosomal pairing and hormonal cocktail that allows us to be more easily placed into a binary male or female category. Biological sex differences are often detected and treated by tweaking technology- adjusting the results of a blood test or using a different type of imaging modality to account for sex based physiologically differences. Biological sex is akin to the variable of age- its importance is related to context. Although a 15 year and 50-year-old may get the same evaluation for an ankle sprain they should not get the same evaluation for chest pain. Similarly, how females and males react to any particular treatment may or may not be associated with a clinically important difference. As the science of earnestly studying males and females side by side is still so new, we are just beginning to understand where differences actually exist and in what contexts they are clinically relevant. As the influence of gender can be quite subtle and often involves many touchpoints, recognizing and fixing gender-based differences can be challenging. For example, here is how an individual's gender might influence what happens to them if they have a heart attack. Whether they live alone If and when they call an ambulance If they come in by car, how quickly they are triaged Where they are geographically placed in the department How they describe their symptoms How their symptoms are perceived by providers (which in turn may be confounded by provider gender) How quickly an EKG is done How comfortable they are with procedural consent How quickly they go to the cath lab When and what type of medications they are prescribed Who they are referred to for follow up Whether they are compliant with their new meds or appointments Whether they are referred to and participate in cardiac rehab Currently, I suspect that most of us in medicine would likely acknowledge that there are some legitimate examples out there of gender and race- based health inequities. The next step, however, requires an acknowledgement that those inequities are not just happening somewhere else, but that they have also likely creeped into our own practices. This can be difficult because it directly threatens our explicit belief that we deliver “the same” excellent care to all of our patients. Recognizing and mitigating gender disparities, especially those related to implicit bias, requires deep self-reflection along with an individual and organizational commitment to actually want things to change. Solutions include wide-spread “no-blame” educational forums and the development of technical safeguards to help reduce unintentional bias. For example, the creation of default “opt in” disease specific order sets and operational checklists.
