Can you still chase your dreams if you aren’t sure about how to move forward? Yes! Today’s guest shares his personal experience with learning to be still and focus on the next step. Brian Drury is a return guest from Episode 44. We’re checking in with Brian to see what’s new in his life and his dream chase. He’s the founder of Overcoming Graduation, the creator and host of the Overcoming Graduation podcast, a professional speaker, coach, and author of the #1 Amazon bestseller, The First Step. Through his work, he helps teach young adults everything he wished he had known about habits and mindset to help them create their dream lives, starting today. One of Brian’s recent speeches went viral and has reached over 14.7 million people around the world, and is now featured as one of Goalcast’s Top Inspiring Videos. Brian also has a passion for travel; he speaks three languages, taught himself to speak Portuguese in just seven months, and has traveled to 17 different countries around the world. Brian wants everyone, young and old, to realize that their dream life is within their reach if they are willing to think differently and take action. Focus on the next small step Do you always know the next step to take? No, there are times when you are in a place of uncertainty. You don’t always have clarity and focus on the next step to take, but you have to move forward in incremental steps to reach bigger goals down the road. Brian hasn’t always had the clarity in business and personal relationships for achieving the success he wanted. He says that even “on the path to somewhere,” you have to be able to find joy along the way. “Life won’t be sunshine and rainbows every single day.” TWEET: You know if you explode and blow up, it’s not going to bring the results you are looking for. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Learning to live in “the medium” Do you live in extremes? Brian admits that living in extremes has been his norm, but he is learning to stay in a healthier, happier “medium.” Even though he teaches self-care, he has had to discipline himself to keep up with that care every day, especially when the stress and busy-ness of life get in the way. Living in “the medium” has helped him take full responsibility in his identity and prompted an honest conversation with his father, which was a big emotional release. TWEET: I’ve lived in extremes for most of my life. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams Enjoy today - and tomorrow Is your inner child still there? Brian says we need to be playful and embrace our inner child, but we need moderation in healthy areas and honesty in communication and relationships. We need to cut out bad habits and embrace healthy ones so that we can enjoy the next day in the same way as today. Brian lives by a quote from author Aubrey Marcus: “Don’t enjoy today at the expense of tomorrow.” Brian says we need to make time to play, have fun, and live in the moment. TWEET: Having a coach and mentor has changed my life drastically. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams See the behind-the-scenes interview with Brian for more! www.aimeej21.com/youtube   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:22] How Brian is still chasing his dreams [2:02] Being in a different place [5:38] Focus on the next step [9:55] Having it “all figured out” is inauthentic [16:14] Learning to take full responsibility [20:54] Easy to say, harder to do [23:56] How removing the consequences eliminates negative self-talk [31:36] The value of what you loved to do as a kid [34:22] What Brian learned last year [35:38] The dangers of social media assumptions [39:52] How we “dress up” our dreams with destination fallacies [45:22] Your own definition of truth [47:32] Slowing down to enjoy the NOW   RESOURCES MENTIONED: Brian’s Website Brian on Facebook Brian on Twitter Brain on Instagram Find out how to donate to the show:  www.aimeej21.com/donate TWEETS YOU CAN USE:  TWEET: Life is a “choose your own adventure” situation. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: We often default to the struggles that are given to us instead of choosing our struggle. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: Society glorifies behaviors that are unhealthy for us. @overcominggrad #chasingdreams TWEET: Taking full responsibility means you will take action to improve your life and not blame others.  @overcominggrad #chasingdreams

How do you show up in your life? Are you living your best life every day? Today’s show is full of inspiration to help you leave the mundane behind and push yourself to never again accept mediocrity as your normal.  Scott Mulvaney channels his health-nut, adrenaline-junkie energy into everything he influences. That same energy comes through on his LIVETHEFUEL podcast, which helps fuel your health, business, and lifestyle. Scott focuses on sales and marketing growth, brand strategy, coaching, and consulting solutions to help you control how you exist online. There are very few people as passionate as Scott about living his best life every day.  Wanting something “different” Can you look back at specific circumstances in your life and see the lessons learned? For Scott, the life lessons are everywhere as he contemplates his life journey. He was raised in a farm family in NJ that relocated later to PA, where Scott’s family still lives and works in farming today. Scott, however, wanted something different. He never thought he would go to college because school was never easy or comfortable, but then he discovered vocational tech school. He interned at an electronics lab at 17 years old and then learned a tough lesson when he was let go from the lab he built so an adult could be hired to run the lab.  TWEET: Life lessons are everywhere, so don’t be afraid to look for them in your successes and failures. #chasingdreams A two-year detour Scott went on to achieve college degrees in marketing AND psychology, but then something changed. He met a girl from the west coast who aspired to be a Hotshot firefighter. He thought that sounded like an interesting challenge, and said to himself, “What if this is the next phase of my dream?” The training and the concept blew his mind, so in 2010, he went out west and proved himself for two years. Since the Hotshot “season” was only a few months of the year, he spent the other months traveling and making some crazy connections with all kinds of people. TWEET: What they taught me in school, I don’t use. #chasingdreams Why LIVETHEFUEL? If you’ve ever contemplated doing a podcast, you’ve probably toyed with what you would name your show. Scott had listened to a lot of podcasts as he was busy helping a friend grow her company, but he knew there was something more he was meant to do. For inspiration, he covered a wall with Post-It notes of every keyword that meant something to him. He took the mantra, “Live life to the fullest” and altered it to “Live the fired-up epic life”-----and the acronym FUEL was born. Now, Scott is busy writing a book, for which he plans to donate his proceeds to the families of fallen firefighters.  TWEET: What if I could write a book and NOT make money from it? #chasingdreams **For a bonus behind-the-scenes conversation with Scott, visit http://ww.aimeej21/patreon and become a Patreon Donor. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Kick yourself in your ass. As we approach the end of 2018, have you spent any time reflecting on your year? On this, the last episode of the year, we’re spending some time reflecting on 2018, which was filled with the loss of many wonderful people. As much as we look back, though, it’s also a time to look forward to what’s coming up in 2019. Some good things about 2018 What moves have you made in 2018? One thing I did was to move back to Baltimore, allowing me to be closer to my family, which is a good thing. I’ve also found a work-life balance that works for me. I took a trip to India and truly learned how to relax and be “in the moment”---and unplug. I had several nieces and cousins get married this year. Concerning the podcast, we hit 150 episodes this year and exceeded 150,000 downloads, which is utterly amazing! As we look ahead, think about the next phase for you and how you can improve. TWEET: “Life is figuring out who you are---and owning it.” #chasingdreams My top five lessons learned in 2018 What lessons have you learned this year? I want to share my Top Five, starting with #5: Get help. You don’t have to do it all yourself. People are ready and willing to help. #4: Find your voice and your vision. The world needs YOU and your uniqueness. #3: Embrace your fears. For me, it’s my fear of heights, so I have plans in place to face that fear in 2019. #2: Prioritize mental health. Negative influences can affect your life in bad ways. #1: YOU are what’s important. Each person is unique, distinct, and important. TWEET: “Don’t let fear hold you back from your greatness.” #chasingdreams Find YOUR value Do you know how you affect the people around you? As a twin, I had to learn that no one person is more important than another, no matter what your status in life. Your light that shines out has an effect on all the people around you. Your story has a ripple effect that you don’t even realize. Don’t be the person your parents want you to be, but live YOUR life and be true to that. TWEET: “I truly learned how to relax and vacation this year.” #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [1:00] Reflecting on the past year and some of the tough losses [3:05] Amazing things from 2018 [5:28] Learning how to relax [9:32] Embracing new things with clarity [11:40] Lessons learned, beginning with Get help [16:04] Find YOUR voice [18:34] Embrace your fears [23:55] The importance of mental health [33:34] YOU are what’s important RESOURCES MENTIONED: Aimee on Facebook Aimee on Twitter Aimee on Instagram Aimee on LinkedIn TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: “I learned to truly savor and enjoy the moment I was in.” #chasingdreams TWEET: “I wish more people could experience that feeling of tranquility and calm.” #chasingdreams

How would you live your life if there were no rules, if money wasn’t an issue, and if you weren’t afraid of anything? THAT is our topic for today because we are talking to someone who has the courage to find and follow her own path and not one that society dictates for her.  Marci Nault has immeasurable enthusiasm, passion for fun, and a get-it-done attitude, no matter the situation. Her life can best be described as what would result if Marie Forleo and Tony Robbins partnered together on The Amazing Race. In the last six years, she has completed her entire bucket list of 101 dreams come true, all on a barista’s budget while increasing her net worth. She’s the author of The Lake House, has built and sold two companies, and is a real estate investor. Marci has been featured on The Huffington Post, CBS, ABC, Amped Radio, NPR, and more. She lives fearlessly and has accomplished many things, and she’s not done yet! The shocking moment that changed everything What do you want from this life? This was the question Marie asked herself as she watched her once-strong brother fight for his life in the hospital during an intense fight with MRSA infection. Her brother’s experience served as a wake-up call for new evaluation and a closer look at her life, which she calls “a mess.” Although she wasn’t sure how to start over, she realized that life can be gone in an instant and knew it was time to go after what SHE wanted for her life. She wondered, “If money wasn’t an issue; if I wasn’t afraid, and if I didn’t care what people think, what would I do? Where would I go? How would I live my life? Who would I want to become?” From these questions came her bucket list of 101 dreams come true. TWEET: “A bucket list life isn’t about checking things off, but infusing your dreams into yourself.” @DaretoDream #ChasingDreams A completely different person Could she ever go back to her old ways of living? She says there is absolutely no way because she has become a completely different person. Her confidence and health have soared. She realized that her bucket list was the road map to the life she was meant to live. Marci travels whenever she feels like it and trains and performs as a salsa dancer and figure skater. She just finished her second book. She confidently lives every single day as her “bucket list life.” It’s no surprise that she is always adding to the list those new things she wants to experience. She says, “Allow the magnificence of life to always come to you. Living your passions means that there is a place that lifts you up no matter what you face in life. Start with the small things. Fully experience life. Don’t just ‘collect’ the moment so you can post it.” TWEET: “Listen to what you’re doing in your life that doesn’t line up with your dreams.” @DaretoDream #chasingdreams What we need to change Life isn’t WHAT you do with your life, but HOW you live! We always want to put people in brackets according to their age, profession, accomplishments, etc. For kids, it’s all about what they want to be. In school, we are told to get it right and follow the path that we’re told to follow. Society has blocks that everyone thinks they have to fit into. We are asked, “What will you be: Who will you love? Where will you live?” Marci explains that people are uncomfortable being asked how they want to live because they’ve never been asked. It’s like we have never been given permission to “think outside the box,” but Marci says that it’s time to give yourself permission! TWEET: “My whole life revolves around going from one magnificent dream to the next.” @DaretoDream #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser--”Take the baby step. Go back to what you love to do or wanted to do before people told you that you couldn’t. Find that thing and take one little baby step toward it.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:35] How Marci’s dream chase began [5:31] Living the Bucket List Life [8:25] The thought process in making the list [13:30] How our phones distract us from enjoying the moment [18:19] How people want to “consume” you [21:23] Life isn’t WHAT you do, but HOW you live [23:25] Why we don’t ask the most important question [26:00] Break up with the concept of age [32:00] Give yourself permission to mess up [34:05] Marci’s honest list [36:05] Start with the deep pleasure of life [39:07] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Marci’s Website The Lake House by Marci Nault Marci on Facebook Marci on Instagram Marci on Twitter Marci on LinkedIn www.bucketlistlifeplanner.com www.bucket-listlife.com   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: This world is the greatest playground you can ever imagine. Phillip Lanos is a Los Angeles native. Hyperactive and often pensive, this actor, singer, songwriter, and podcast producer is best experienced in person. Due to his half-Mexican, half-French descent, he’s had opportunities to appear on international Latino TV channels like Telemundo for an American Idol spin-off show named “Yo Soy El Artista.” Phillip has also appeared on MTV’s “Copycat,” which was MTV’s attempt at singing competitions. In the podcasting world, Phillip has worked on over 300 episodes with entrepreneurial clients and journalism greats like Cal Fussman and Martin Perlich, and YouTube influencers like Roger Burnley. Finding a passion. What would you give up to pursue your passion? Phillip has dreamed of an acting and singing career, taken intentional steps and moved across the country to pursue those dreams. When he landed in NYC, he secured a great job with a well-known marketing agency, even though he felt terribly unqualified. He found a mentor, worked hard for success, and was soon offered a great position with a big salary. He turned it down. Why? He didn’t want to “settle” without at least trying something in which he could be his own boss. He walked away from those opportunities to truly pursue his passion. TWEET: I’m tired of doing permanent things with temporary people. @philliplanos Regrouping in a new direction Have you ever had to start over, refocus, and redirect your efforts? Phillip knows what that’s all about. He moved in a new direction by leaving NYC and moving back to Los Angeles. He had to regroup in order to plan for his success. There were certain boxes he wanted to “check” in his life so each plan and strategy had to be tested and measured. He wasn’t looking for one-dimensional success. He has since realized that you can have failure AND success at the same time in different areas of your life. It all comes down to what you’re willing to sacrifice for your dreams. TWEET: #Life won’t let me #fail as long as I put in the #work. @philliplanos Being vulnerable What is your deepest insecurity? For Phillip, it’s the “I’m not good enough” voice. You may think that’s unusual for an actor, but it’s really quite common. Phillip expresses this vulnerability in over-achieving or under-achieving, all in a quest to find balance. Phillip grew up as one of 18 siblings, with parents who weren’t a big part of his life. HIs father was diagnosed with ALS when Phillip was only 8, so he has few memories of good times with his father. Because of his family background, Phillip has keenly felt the need to make his life count. For this reason, he is very intentional about crafting his plan for success. TWEET: My deepest insecurity is that I’m not good enough. @philliplanos Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Do something real and get instant feedback. Take advantage of those lightning strikes that are full of positivity, faith, hope, and potential.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:40] How we met at Podcast Movement in California [6:18] Phillip’s passion in chasing the dream [8:32] Why he chose to go to NYC [12:25] When you “talk” yourself into a dream [14:10] Regrouping to find success [16:56] The holistic focus [19:46] Staying active in many areas [24:52] Being “not good enough” [28:16] Talking yourself into a dream in the middle of dark moments [35:10] Being back home [38:01] Phillip’s ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Philip’s Website Philip on Instagram Philip on Twitter TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: You’ve got to take a #loss sometimes to know what a #win looks like. @philliplanos TWEET: Just because you thoroughly enjoy something doesn’t mean you’re passionate about it. @philliplanos TWEET: Metaphorically and symbolically, I’ve come back to zero. @philliplanos

The Wizards of Drivel - Stoke City Podcast

Hello and welcome to The Wizards of Drivel Podcast In the absence of Chris, Ben and any meaningful football to talk about this weekend – we've done something a bit different for this episode. Joining David Cowlishaw are David Lee and Jon Mackenzie. David Lee is the author of Triffic, a biography of Tony Pulis, and 41 Shades of Grey - "The Tweet Life of Stoke City", which takes a look at last season through the lens of Twitter. Jon is a freelance journalist and podcaster who presents the Team of John O'Sheas podcast. This summer Jon, a Leeds fan, interviewed fans of all 20 Premier League teams to gain a unique insight into the clubs of the top flight before the season got underway. They're joining me to discuss the manifold issues of football fandom – is there a right way to support a club? Has social media been good for football discussion? What do Stoke fans want from Stoke City and how will the nature of supporting your team change in the future? As I say, it's something a bit different for us – so please give us your honest feedback on Facebook on Twitter and let us know if you'd like to hear more discussions like this. Contentment on the edge, with Sage B. Hobbs: How to live up to the biggest and best version of you When she got cancer at 23, Sage learned that life was not a guarantee. She had traveled to nearly 20 countries as a kid. Her heart was set on service to humanity. What would you do if you knew might not have an indefinite amount of time to change the world?   Curiosity How did your journey begin? I grew up in a really adventurous family who were really into making a difference in the world. I didn’t realize how unique that was. Being curious about the world was a family value. That natural curiosity led me to want to engage with people in a deeper way. Human beings were the only things that captured my interest for a prolonged period of time. I have travelled to nearly 20 countries. What was your most unusual cultural experience? Kenya. It was a whole other level of poverty. It deepened my sense of gratitude and purpose. And taught me so much around how you can find joy in simplicity.   Tweet: “You can find joy in simplicity.” Sage B. Hobbs #inchargeshow @drvaleriebaker   I was 21. It was profound for me. I expanded and grew monumentally. Allowing me to learn in an experiential way around this thing called humanity.   Changing your path How I got here in this moment, it was holding my second baby in my arms. I started to approach the hour of going back to my work and I had this visceral response of “I really don’t want to go back." It scared the crap out of me. I am sitting there going “why can’t I just be happy enough?” What would be a way to use my gifts to be of service to a wider community in a different way? I finished out that school year. I stepped into this entrepreneurial, coaching, personal development, writing world. It was absolutely what I was supposed to do.   Listening to your intuition I hear it from a lot of women, this guilt “I have everything that one might want but I am not happy." That is why they end up settling and not rocking the boat. What gave you that confidence to step up and that courage to do it? I was 23. I got an awesome first real job, making a difference. I was psyched. I was idealistic. I was invincible. I was fired up. I was sitting at my new desk one afternoon and I felt this little lump above my collar bone. I ignored it for a little while. It didn’t go away. I was like “This really isn’t right." I listened to that little piece of intuition. It was a whirlwind. I was diagnosed with cancer. Hutchinson Lymphoma. I had to have chemotherapy and radiation. My life turned on its head.   Receiving love and being true to yourself I learned many many lessons, including how to receive love and let people help me. I really needed help. I needed support. I remember my mom saying to me “Sage, let love in. Let people help you. They want to help you. It helps them to help you. Its generous to let them help you.”   The other really huge thing was I said “Life is not a guarantee.”   Tweet: “Life is not a guarantee.” Sage B. Hobbs #inchargeshow @drvaleriebaker   It was really different to look at it in the face and think I might not have an indefinite amount of time to change the world. Since then I have lived with much more of an actual presence that life can be stolen from you at any moment. I needed to live in a way that felt true to me.   Tweet: I needed to live in a way that felt true to me.  #inchargeshow @drvaleriebaker   Lessons from loss How do you know when you are not fully in your center? I lost my dad five and a half years ago. It was traumatic for me. He was an incredible role model for me. There is a gap in my memory of fogginess around that time. I can’t even get clear on what was happening. I was floating a little bit. I think that’s part of grief. I wasn’t tethered to my center in that time. It was five months from health to death. I was flying across the country. My dad had been in 11 countries the year before for work. Then he all of a sudden was paralyzed, in a wheelchair from the chest down. I know in that moment I couldn’t always find the grace or the internal knowing. My intention is that we get better at snapping out of the old story that doesn’t serve us.   You get better at coming back to your joy, your purpose in the world, more quickly.   Receiving without guilt How do you get back when you get disconnected? I am a huge believer in that human connection is the most powerful resource we have.   Tweet: Human connection is the most powerful resource we have. #inchargeshow @drvaleriebaker   I think it is human disconnection that causes us the most problems. For me, I call people. I have cultivated my support grew, my team, my posse. You get to choose your crew. I have these women in my life who can get me back to who I really am in the world. I call the people who stand for me being the biggest, best version of myself. It is a reciprocal thing. It’s this give and take. You have to practice it in order to also receive it.   The power of yoga I was so lucky that I started doing yoga right before I got cancer. Just at the local gym, as a 22-year-old. After I had cancer, I wanted to be in a helping place and closer to nature. If I am stressed, I got to go to yoga. Something about doing yoga in community, my brain settles down. I reconnect with the parts I like about myself.   Teaching what you are learning I know you’ve taken my quiz that is based on the chakra system. Would you mind sharing your results and if it resonated with you? Mine was Inspiration. [Discover yours at www.yourtrueselfie.com] It’s about communication, truth, power, voice. That’s also where my anxiety will come. There will be a tightening, a restriction in that area. It is interesting, one of the hardest poses for me is fish pose or bridge. They are both these huge throat openers. You should be teaching what you are also learning.     The balance between contentment and living on the edge Back to cancer, I really got clear I want to enjoy this life. I don’t want to always live so intensely on the edge that my fear is racking my nervous system. I want to enjoy the contentment right on the edge. Playing in that zone of always pushing, growing and expanding and finding grace. Fear and excitement, they are a dance. Does the fear stop you or can you walk with it?   Breaking through the barriers of stress I often find that anticipation is where most stress lies. The things that aren’t working in our lives also serve us in some way. There is a payoff. That makes you seem like your life is important, being busy and stressed. I have to examine stress for myself. Where is it coming from? How much of it am I willing to tolerate? Is it a healthy stress? There is some stress to writing a book, creating a live event, and being a mom to two kids. How much stress is productive that keeps me engaged and what parts can I let go of? So perfectionism and stress are going to always be my Achilles heel.
