Opportunities, priorities, profit—all kinds of greatness is afoot. But that also means: something's gotta give. Will it be this show? Nope. Well, not really. But we are taking a dose of our own advice and attenuating everyone's favorite show about couples in business together. And honestly, it's not just because we're feeling queasy from being stuck in the hot, humid freak show that is South Jersey…

THE PLAY’S THE THING: “Love ya.” Ah, romance. It’s still the same old story. You meet a guy. He wines and dines you. He sleeps with you. He dumps you. He tries to kill you. Sounds like it’s time for Episode 48 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture and I’ll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this podcast, I am happy to welcome as my guest, Hollywood hyphenate, writer/actor Kelly Campbell, who has chosen the Nancy Meyers directed, Diane Keaton vehicle, Something’s Gotta Give and I have chosen the classic Joan Crawford film noir Sudden Fear. Both movies with plots revolving around female playwrights and their love lives. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Are women dating younger men as believable as men dating younger women? What Does Robot Monster have to do with it? Keanu Reeves, really? Lillian Hellman, really? Who is Theresa Harris? How do Superman and Superwoman fit in? What is a women in danger/peril film and who may have created the first one? Where does the title of Something’s Gotta Give come from? What is a homme fatale? Things get personal this week, as Ben and Alex follow Oscar winners Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton on their tumultuous relationship and it brings out the reflective side of the Arnietholy chaps. Writer-director Nancy Meyers is a brand unto herself and this isn't a bad example of why studios are so willing to throw tens of millions of dollars at her. Is it funny enough and romantic enough to pass the romcom test though? And just how incredibly hot is Keanu in this? Music is Black Fly by Audionautix. Get in touch here: thearniethology@gmail.com

The situation with “distance learning” and the battle over mine and my wife’s schedules has reached a point that we are having to make serious changes. Because of our separate work schedules, it has been very difficult to balance work and our boys’ school lessons. We are now having to look into changing our work schedules to accommodate it all. Ultimately, the issue lies with the need to supervise our younger boys during their school day, my wife working during school hours, and my graveyard work schedule necessitating me sleeping during the day. There’s only so many hours in a week, and I need all of the ones available to get sleep and take care of home business. With that, I’ve decided to put the podcast on an indefinite break until a time that I will be able to continue producing it without having to sacrifice my limited sleeping hours and potentially my health.I know I have said this in the past, even as recently as earlier this year. But under the current circumstances, I simply cannot continue the show. The stress of trying to navigate my children’s education mixed with my already questionable work/life balance just doesn’t leave any room right now for podcasting. I have even had to pass up paid podcast editing opportunities due to the current lack of any time to do so. I have to take some time to try to find a balance, and hopefully, before too long, I’ll be able to come back to the show. Unfortunately, I do not know when/ if that will happen.I would like to say, thank you for listening. Thank you for your support for the last 5 years. I know there are far more entertaining shows to listen to than my ramble fest, and you are an amazing group of people that have continued to motivate me to keep going for all this time. And you are also the reason that I will do whatever I have to do to figure this out and come back with all of the energy I had before the world turned upside down.

New York Magazine's, The Cut article, "8 TV Shows to Watch After a Breakup" sparked a lovely conversation about TV shows watched by Tamu and Mallory during the dark times of relationships end. Moral to the Story: Breakup shows are good for a time, but, when you end up hating them, it means you have moved on. Other Fun Topics Discussed: Planet Earth makes Tamu grateful to be a human and not an animal. Noah's Arc was an AMAZING show and should still be on TV. Mallory's Feel Good Shows: Parks and Rec, Steven Universe. Mallory's Feel Good Video Games: Skyrim, Dragon Age. Mallory's Feel Good Animal: Indigo Mallory's heart is encased in dry ice. Tamu's Breakup Shows - Wight 1: Something's Gotta Give, Sex and the City, Charmed, Angel. Tamu's Breakup Shows - Wight 2: Degrassi: The Next Generation, (yes the one with baby Drake) it was on while studying during her Bachelors degree quest. FYI, Degrassi Junior High was live on PBS when she was in junior high! During her breakup with Wight 1, they watched a lot of movies together; Napoleon Dynamite, Garden State. HBO's Togetherness episode featuring James Blake's, The Wilhelm Scream triggered Tamu into wanting to do harm to herself. Tamu's Breakup TV Recommendation: any of the 90 Day Fiance franchise; These cautionary tales will make you feel better about yourself because there are way stupider people in the world than you. Mallory wants to be hopeful.

Welcome to Episode One of Citizen Jane! In this--our INAUGURAL episode--we dig into three Nancy Meyers movies--The Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give, and It's Complicated--and talk about the style and substance of her movie. We also get into the idea of Auteur Theory and talk about the garbage fact that Meyers is rarely talked about as an auteur but also--PLOT TWIST--why auteur theory is kind of a garbage approach in general. Also, we digress at length about the fashion in her movies, the deliciousness of Keanu Reeves, and the truly absurd detail that Meryl Streep wants to remodel her already perfect kitchen. Keanu Reeves has been in a number of romantic-comedies, though the ones we have covered so far in our all Keanu podcast have been, well, awful. So, it’s with relief that we come to a good one in the form of Nancy Meyers’ Something’s Gotta Give. Sam (@samshotfirst) welcomes back Manish Mathur (@TheManish89) to discuss the film. Keanu is nothing but smolder in this film which co-stars Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Amanda Peet, and Frances McDormand.

Given how tragically hard we've found it to speak to women on this show, it's a genuine delight to welcome writer, director and producer Nancy Meyers to Soundtracking. Nancy is one of the grand dames of Hollywood. Having earned an Oscar nomination for her original screenplay for Private Benjamin in 1980, she's since been responsible for a string of commercial smashes, including The Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday. Indeed, her second film as director, What Women Want, was at one stage the most successful film ever directed by a woman, taking in $183 million in the United States alone. Her latest project is Home Again, for which she assumed the role of producer for her daughter Hallie. The film is scored by John Debney, who features prominently in the Jon Favreau episode too. What with being one of the undoubted queens of the Rom-Com, Nancy has worked with several legendary composers over the years - from Bill Conti and Alan Silvestri to the inimitable Hans Zimmer. You'll hear plenty of their work throughout the conversation, but where else could we begin than with Carole King?
Martin and Marta look at the roles and representation for women over the age of 60(ish). Topics include sexuality, business, and responses to harassment - also why Keanu Reeves is better than Jack Nicholson. Plus Marty fumes at being forced to watch a Nancy Myers movie. Our guests this week...Suzanne Farwell has been a producer on some of the most commercially successful comedies in recent history and worked with many of the industry’s most recognized and sought-after talent. Movies such as "Something's Gotta Give" with academy award winners Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Plus "It's Complicated" starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. Her new company, Resonate, focus' on female lead, female perspective driven movies! Monica Phillips is the Executive Director of the Friendly House, which provides women seeking recovery from alcohol and other substance use disorders with a safe, structured and supportive home-like environment that fosters recovery, personal growth and civic responsibility. The entity helped her recover and now she is paying it forward. Friendly House was the very first women's recover entity in the country-founded 66 years ago!
Longtime successful movie producer Suzanne Farwell (It's Complicated, Something's Gotta Give) faced an unexpected and unsettling challenge in her early forties. She'd produced big budget studio movies with Nancy Meyers for some 20 years when both women (amicably) decided to do their own thing. At an age when Hollywood is showing most women the door and amidst a changing industry paradigm, she was terrified at the prospect of starting all over as an independent movie producer and her uncertain future. Learn how she overcame her fears, met the challenge with gusto and continued on to form Resonate Entertainment, a production company aimed at making movies for the female audience.
Nancy Meyers is the filmmaker behind comedies like Something's Gotta Give and It's Complicated. Now her daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, is joining the family business with her debut film Home Again, which stars Reese Witherspoon. Host Linda Holmes talks to the mother-daughter team about working together, the challenges of making an indie rom-com, and building worlds through beautiful homes.

Bonjour! Comment ça va? What's that? Oh, just speaking French for no reason, in true Something's Gotta Give fashion! Needless to say, there's a LOT to cover this week, and we're so excited to welcome the fabulous Ali Segel (EliteDaily, The Tweet Life with Ali and Patrick) to the podcast to help us break down this 2003 classic. So put on your favorite turtleneck, grab a glass of wine, and listen as we gush about human puppy Keanu Reeves and make some VERY poorly-timed jokes about Taylor Swift's litigiousness!
The 2003 Nancy Meyers joint, "Something's Gotta Give," tells the story of a mother falling wildly in love with her daughter's boyfriend after spending a couple days with the guy while he's recovering from a heart attack. It's a tale as old as time, told by an idiot, full of phony crying and boner jokes, signifying nothing. Diane Keaton plays Erica Jane Barry, a turtleneck wearin' Broadway play writin' 50-something divorcée who somehow manages to lead a billionaire's lifestyle. At first, she pretends that she is leading a highly-fulfilling and independent life, but she quickly falls to pieces as soon as a man she gets a crush on appears. Don't worry, though, because she ends up writing a hit play about her heartbreak, so it's all worth it or something. Jack Nicholson plays Harry Sanborn, a Viagra poppin' rap label ownin' 60-something multi-millionaire playboy who spends most of his time seeking out casual sex with beautiful women half his age until he has a heart attack and sees the error of his ways. After that, he has a brief fling with a woman who is age-appropriate, spends six months apologizing to hundreds of past lovers for no reason and chases after his one true love in Paris. Keanu Reeves plays Dr. Julian Mercer, a flawless 30-something Broadway lovin' emergency medicine practicin' doctor who falls deeply in love with Diane Keaton's character immediately upon meeting her despite their almost 20-year age gap. That's right, they cast Bill from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" as an intellectual physician. His distractingly-bad performance inadvertently provides the only effective comic relief in the movie. Join us as we discuss the problems we have with Nancy Meyers movies as well as Keating's mom's thorough analysis the film. As Nancy Meyers' long-time producing partner, Suzanne Farwell established her career making big studio films like The Intern, It's Complicated, The Holiday and Something's Gotta Give. She's stepping out as an independent producer with the upcoming Carrie Pilby, which premiered last week to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. In this episode, she sits down with us to discuss the state of female films, the battles of taking a small book to the big screen, and how an overnight "dialing friends for money" campaign saved Carrie Pilby from falling apart a month before shooting. Through it all, we drink three white burgundies whose Frenchy names are too long to account for here and also get the dish on Suzanne's first movie job working with an 11-year-old Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap.
