Returning guests Cecilia Conti and Josh Reinhold join Torie to eviscerate the cultural climate's pathetic answer to a feminist take on an erotic thriller, THE HOUSEMAID (2025). Starring everyone's favorite MAGA-loving bimbo, Sydney Sweeney, the phenomenally talented Amanda Seyfried, and a lesser-Hemsworth-coded hunk named Brendan Sklenar (who Josh looooves), this film undoubtedly caters to the true crime-obsessed, Colleen Hoover-reading, Lifetime™-loving audience. Featuring disappointingly little sex, atrocious clothing, unnecessarily gratuitous violence, and awful one-liners, this "for women, by women" film fails to meet its intended goal of feminist rhetoric. Despite a truly bang-up performance from Amanda Seyfried, it barely even meets the criteria for a solid hate-watch. Amid the discourse, Torie struggles not to sound like a misogynist discussing Sydney Sweeney's most famous attributes, and everyone fails (again and again) to correctly pronounce Seyfried.

Luke Hemsworth may be part of one of Australia’s most famous acting families, but his path to Hollywood was anything but conventional. Before the spotlight, he was pearl farming in remote Western Australia, sanding floors, and taking on odd jobs while never fully expecting acting to become his career. As the eldest Hemsworth brother, Luke was actually the first to step in front of the camera, building his early career in Australian TV before breaking through internationally with Westworld and beyond - all while carving out his own identity alongside brothers Chris and Liam. In this chat with Helen Smith, Luke reflects on the unexpected journey into acting, leaving the US to return home to Australia and his latest action film Beast – sharing why he believes Australian stories still deserve a bigger place on the world stage. This episode of Netflix vs. Cinema tackle the big question: should you splurge for the big screen or save your pennies for the big stream? Hosts Tosin Ajayi, Sharon Bollen, and London correspondent Holly Nesling review a packed lineup of high-stakes thrillers, groundbreaking documentaries, and fan-favorite period dramas to help you decide where your money is best spent. In the Cinema Crime 101: Tosin reviews the latest heist thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. He breaks down why this is Hemsworth's best performance yet, shifting away from his "superhero" persona into a meticulously planned high-class thief. Cold Storage: Sharon takes us into a "throwback" sci-fi romo that pits Liam Neeson against a deadly prehistoric fungus. From Skylab crashes to quarantine chaos, find out why this fun "romp" earned a high rating. On the Streaming Platforms Mr. Nobody Against Putin (BBC iPlayer): A powerful must-watch. The team discusses this Storyville documentary filmed secretly by a Russian teacher, documenting the chilling militarization of schools following the invasion of Ukraine. Bridgerton Season 4 (Netflix): Holly dives into the latest romance in the ton. The trio discusses the "Cinderella-esque" arc of Benedict Bridgerton and whether the show's shift from "smutty" to storytelling is an improvement. Inside the Industry The team also dives into the fallout from the BAFTAs, discussing the controversy of John Davidson's Tourette's powered racial slur directed at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo. They also address recent viral feedback from their TikTok channel, debating the marketing genius of Emerald Fennell and the intersection of "bad spelling and online abuse." This Week's Verdict: Netflix takes the crown in a high-quality week where "nothing was crap," thanks largely to the emotional impact of Mr. Nobody Against Putin. Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. "Crime 101" is a slick and engaging thriller featuring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo. Hemsworth portrays a jewel thief who is emotionally conflicted and determined to complete one final heist. Guided by a personal code of ethics, his character refuses to harm anyone and targets only insurance companies with his schemes. The film's impressive supporting cast includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro and Nick Nolte who all contribute to the film's strong ensemble dynamic. Bart Layton, a British documentary filmmaker, brings surprisingly taut and effective direction, allowing "Crime 101" to remain engaging even when the plot stretches believability. “Crime 101” is an entertaining action throwback. The animated sports comedy "Goat" is from producer Steph Curry, who also lends his voice to one of the characters. The story centers on a young goat who dreams of competing in "Roarball," an intense and dangerous version of full-contact basketball. The film boasts a talented voice cast, including Caleb McGlaughlin from “Stranger Things,” David Harbour, Jennifer Hudson, Jelly Roll, and Gabrielle Union. "Goat" is a predictable, but family-friendly bit of escapism. "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is a high-concept, sci-fi comedy that combines the time-loop antics of "Groundhog Day" with the energy of "Terminator." Sam Rockwell stars as a time traveler who repeatedly journeys back from the future, attempting to save humanity from the impending threat of artificial intelligence. Director Gore Verbinski seems to draw inspiration from the eccentric style of the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The result is a smart and wildly imaginative film, even if it sometimes struggles with pacing and knowing when to wrap things up.
There's a particular kind of confidence required to make a modern Los Angeles heist movie without flinching at the shadow of “Heat.” It's the cinematic elephant in the room, the reference point that inevitably looms over any story involving meticulous thieves, dogged cops, and asphalt‑level tension. With “Crime 101,” filmmaker Bart Layton acknowledges that lineage without trying to wrestle it. Instead, he builds something adjacent: a grounded, contemporary crime film that uses the genre as a delivery system for deeper questions about identity, status, and obsession.Based on the novella by Don Winslow, “Crime 101” follows a precise, disciplined jewel thief (played by Chris Hemsworth) whose carefully calibrated life begins to fracture as an obsessive LAPD detective (played by Mark Ruffalo) closes in. Sound familiar "Heat" fans? Luckily, we also have other stories running parallel, like Halle Berry as Sharon, a woman boxed in by institutional disrespect and professional diminishment, slowly realizing that the systems she has played by were never designed to reward her. The ensemble is stacked with Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, and more, but the film's real engine is tone: tense, patient, and uninterested in clean moral answers.READ MORE: ‘Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie': Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol On Time Travel, Friendship, The Show's 3rd Season, & Filming Without Permits [The Discourse Podcast]Joining The Discourse for two separate interviews, Layton, Hemsworth, and Berry dug into how “Crime 101” consciously avoids Hollywood shorthand while still delivering a propulsive, white‑knuckle ride.

Today’s show was wild. We met a bloke who got fined for pretending to be a ghost in a cemetery, then got stuck into Trump’s so-called “athlete” body stats that make Hemsworth look lazy. Ricki, Blackers and Joel sized each other up for Below Deck casting (spoiler: no one’s surviving), and The Glossys were full of chaos from Kim K roasting psychics to Ariana’s “inconclusive” kissing. This week on The Middle of Culture, we close out our dive into Transformers with Transformers One, last year's animated prequel that tells the origin story of Optimus and Megatron. We rave about how shockingly good it is—beautiful animation, heartfelt storytelling, and voice performances that actually make you care about robots punching each other. Along the way, we talk about Sanderson's declining prose, the “YA-ification” of modern fiction, the decline of mass-market paperbacks, and why we'll always have a soft spot for dumb robot movies done well.Episode NotesOpening BanterPeter returns from travel (Boise and Napa), happy to be home.Eden vents about a rough week and hostile engineers during digital accessibility training, complete with an on-campus shooting alert mid-meeting.Peter describes an incredible dinner at Bistro Jeanty in Napa (truffle deviled eggs, beef bourguignon, and chocolate croissant bread pudding).Books & ReadingPeter finishes Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes (yes, the “Piña Colada Song” guy)—a darkly funny and satisfying story about the McMaster's School of Homicide.Reads Artificial Condition, the second Murderbot novella, and starts Write Your Novel from the Middle.Discussion on how story structure midpoints define theme and cohesion.Critique of Brandon Sanderson's Wind and Truth: great worldbuilding, but noticeably weaker prose since losing his longtime editor.Eden speculates that the issue might extend to the whole fantasy industry—less editing, more aesthetic consumerism, and the death of the mass-market paperback.Broader talk on the “dumbing down” of fiction and the rise of YA and “New Adult” markets catering to comfort rather than challenge.Music & Games CornerPeter dives into rediscovering Psychotic Waltz, Psychonaut, and Oramet—bands that balance progressive creativity with restraint.New release highlight: PowerWash Simulator 2.Eden tests two disappointing gacha games (Duet Night Abyss and Resonance Solstice) and finally uninstalls all HoyoVerse titles.Back to Final Fantasy XIV, excited about the new patch allowing full cross-class glamours.Main Feature – Transformers One (2024)Both agree: it's the best Transformers movie ever made—heartfelt, gorgeously animated, and genuinely emotional.Plot rundown: Orion Pax (Optimus) and D16 (Megatron) rise from the oppressed underclass of “Cogless” robots, uncover Sentinel Prime's corruption, and witness the birth of Autobot vs. Decepticon ideology.Core theme: friendship, betrayal, and revolution—the tragedy of two friends who believe in justice but choose different paths.Voice acting highlights:Brian Tyree Henry's nuanced Megatron is phenomenal.John Hamm nails the duplicitous Sentinel Prime.Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth have real chemistry, even if Hemsworth is the weakest link.Laurence Fishburne brings gravitas as Alpha Trion.Keegan-Michael Key's Bumblebee is purposefully annoying but fits the tone.Praise for the movie's subtle callbacks to the 1986 film (“You don't have the touch or the power”), strong emotional beats, and sense of earned tragedy. Both lament how poorly it performed at the box office—“we are part of the problem”—and hope it gets a sequel.Brief detour comparing the animated film's depth to the shallow chaos of the Michael Bay series.Closing ThoughtsTransformers One feels like the first time the franchise truly understood its own heart.Recommendation: watch it—it's smart, emotional, and fun as hell.
MonteCristo and DoA return to dissect Netflix's latest fantasy implosion, where Liam Hemsworth steps into the role of Geralt and discovers that charisma and coherent writing have both been exhumed. From botched tone and nonsense plotting to uneven VFX and dialogue that feels AI-generated, The Witcher has finally become the kind of fantasy parody it used to mock. The hosts break down why the show collapsed: bizarre subplots, missing chemistry, baffling character arcs, and some of the worst world-building since The Acolyte. They compare Cavill's grounded performance to Hemsworth's “mush-mouth” Witcher, praise Laurence Fishburne for stealing every scene, and mourn the death of what was once Netflix's flagship genre series. Plus: how this all ties back to bad adaptation culture, writer-room ego, and why Henry Cavill was right to leave when he did. I've always followed the industry in Australia closely, as in my opinion it is, pound-for-pound, the best mixology nation on Earth; I've visited often, for teaching and consulting, and wrote a column in Australian Bartender magazine for some years. Last year the Sydney Morning Herald broke a story (sadly, only the first of many) uncovering alleged wide-ranging abuse at the renowned Australian hospitality group Swillhouse, with allegations ranging from management ignoring complaints right up to sexual harassment and rape by former and current staff. Several former Swillhouse employees who were victims, including Jenna and Alexandra, bravely waived their right to anonymity, started a lawsuit against their former employer, and formed the Sorry Not Sorry Collective, which is currently touring with guest bartending and other events to raise awareness about these heinous issues, and to raise actual cash to fund their lawsuit. We caught up during Bar Convent Berlin; I've known Jenna for quite a while and travelled through Japan with her as part of a group learning about shochu. Because of that, and because both her and Alexandra are also Australians - automatically gregarious and affable people - and bartenders to boot, we had what could be described as a deceptively light-hearted sounding conversation that, as well as learning about their routes into bartending and the Australian scene, deals with some very deep topics indeed, ranging from the alleged abuses to the definition of sex work, consent, and a lot more. We couldn't go into every detail of the alleged abuses, because their lawsuit is ongoing, however we discussed some comparable cases in other countries, of which there are a depressing amount. This is very much worth a listen. 18 restaurants, feeding countless A-List celebrities and leading the plant based food scene sounds like the making of a riddle, but is the reality of our guests Mark. Over the years we've all heard the term plant based but what does it actually mean? Can it actually be good enough that it's highly sought after by foodies worldwide? A health crisis transformed Mark's relationship with food forever. After receiving a rare blood cancer diagnosis, he immersed himself in nutritional research while undergoing treatment. What emerged was not just a personal healing journey but the foundation for culinary innovation that would reshape Australia's plant-based dining landscape.Mark's approach is refreshingly approachable. Through his 18 restaurants across Melbourne, Sydney, and Byron Bay—he aspires to create vibrant spaces where food brings people together without dietary labels creating division. His debut cookbook, "This Cookbook is a Huge Mistake" (named after a neon sign in one of his restaurants) emerged during Australia's lengthy COVID lockdowns. Quarantined alone in a hotel room for two weeks, Mark reflected on his culinary journey, documenting recipes and life lessons that had shaped his path. The result combines practical plant-based techniques with personal stories and his trademark pun-filled humor.Beyond business success, Mark's most treasured accomplishment is the community he's built—including unexpected friendships with the Hemsworth family, who began as regular customers and became devoted supporters. Through beautiful, thoughtful food that momentarily transports guests away from daily stress, Mark reminds us that gathering around a table is ultimately about connection, not just nutrition.Try something from this cookbook. Your taste buds will thank you, and you might just find yourself reimagining what plant-based eating can be.This Episode is Sponsored by: Travel with Stephani- Are you looking to plan a vacation for your family this Summer? J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, and is also a reboot that features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series portrayed by a new cast, as the first in the rebooted film series. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) aboard the USS Enterprise as they combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from their future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. The story takes place in an alternate reality that features both an alternate birth location for James T. Kirk and further alterations in history stemming from the time travel of both Nero and the original series Spock (Leonard Nimoy).[4][5] The alternate reality was created in an attempt to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!
