Cal Fussman is a master storyteller, and he's been thinking a lot about AI lately. Why? "This debate between authenticity and artificial intelligence is the battle of the next millennium," he says. When robots can communicate for us, how can we be more human? When we can automate much of our writing and production, how do we share our authentic selves and connect to others? These questinos have never been more important, and Cal — host of the podcast "Big Questions" and former Esquire writer who's interviewed major celebrities and CEOs — has some very surprising answers.

Welcome back to "Hooked on the First Line," where James and master storyteller Cal Fussman dig deep into what makes the opening lines of novels so captivating. Today's focal point is the notoriously controversial but beautifully penned 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov. "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta." These opening lines are as alluring as they are unsettling, a fitting introduction to Nabokov's tale. The episode doesn't stop at 'Lolita'; it branches out into the first lines of Nabokov's 'Ada' and 'Laughter in the Dark,' showing that the author's skill in gripping the reader is not a one-off but a recurring theme in his work. James and Cal talk about the stylistic elements, the melody in the words, and the ethical conundrums posed right from the first sentence. How do these lines affect our perception of the characters and the unfolding story? And how does Nabokov manage to lure us into complex emotional landscapes with just a few words? Discover the craftsmanship behind some of literature's most iconic opening lines.------------What do YOU think of the show? These are bumpy times economically and for many of us it's a period of professional redefinition. What path are we on and is it the career we truly desire? How can we best showcase our skill sets and the value-add we bring? Host Chris Schembra's guest on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times has a methodology that focuses on these questions and much more. Loren Greiff, Founder & President at PortfolioRocket, has developed a framework that's applicable across industry sectors as well as the many phases of our career development. It's as much about defining our own core values and the expertise we offer as it is identifying the workplace culture best suited to our fundamental vision. Loren shares her proprietary four-step process for reimagining – and bringing to reality – a job that feels like exactly the right fit. You'll come away inspired to redefine what you bring to the table and leverage your network – most especially those 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree contacts that hold far more promise than you might imagine! The market right now is fluid, but the one thing that remains consistent always, says Loren, is the importance of being fully ourselves and clear about what we have to contribute: “This is not about contorting yourself and playing Cirque du Soleil with your career,” says Loren, who also hosts Career Blast in a Half. “This is about really advocating and treating yourself as somebody who is going to transform an organization.”If you're ready to retool your career trajectory, now is the time to book a discovery call with Loren, which you can do at this link. You'll also find inspiration and wisdom in her podcast, Career Blast in a Half.If you'd like to learn more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience or subscribe to our newsletter, please visit this link.Click hereto hear more fascinating conversations with Fortune 500 CEOs, professional athletes and entertainerswho have shared their human stories on Gratitude Through Hard Times. KEY TOPICS:If you could give credit or thanks to one person in your life that you don't give enough credit or thanks to – that you've never thought to thank – who would that be and why? No doubt or hesitation – Eileen Jones, a high school English teacher who was the first person to acknowledge Loren's writing talent and develop her voice. Cheers to her!Yes, And: What enabled Loren to be both an outlier and standard-bearer; perform as a maverick while also maintaining impeccable dignity.Research shows that thought leaders are regarded as having two things:Authenticity.Information to share of value to others.Applying the Methodology: How Loren's framework has proven elastic enough to adapt easily across the full range of industry sectors, from legal to ops to HR to creative.Shedding the Cloak: What prompted Loren to break with the hiring/recruitment industry status quo in order to establish a creative alternative model.Sheltering: About putting a repeatable process in place for migrating out of blocked, unhappy workplace situations.Loren's Four-Step Proprietary Process:Step 1: Get Clear!Ask yourself what you've been doing and why.Determine your core values, the benchmark for evaluating opportunities going forward.Establish how people are going to find you via 15-20 keywords relevant to your skill set .Identify 10-15 companies that meet your ideal criteria.Showcase specific problems you've solved or successes you've had.Create boundaries around the conditions under which you want to meet.Step 2: All about Your Assets!Reimagine LinkedIn as more than a profile. It needs to convert interest and generate activity/connections.Create content – which includes strategically commenting on other people's posts. Join conversations!Develop marketing materials with effective (timely) messaging.Design collateral (visual and written) that is accessible.Step 3: Networking with strangers!Reach out to 2nd, 3rd and 4th degree links – which are going to be your more useful allies in finding a new niche.Formulate pitches that will demonstrate preparation and initiative.Learn how to ask sharper, more mind-blowing questions.Step 4: Do your homework (aka Sniff Testing)!Perform due diligence on your prospective employer.Ensure that onboarding and your 30/60/90-day plan are in place.Keep eyes and ears open for unexpected leads or connections.Scan the landscape for business challenges to which you can bring your vision, expertise and solutions.Shout-Out for Eileen Jones: Thank you for your example, bravery, wit, class – all the known and unknown gifts you've given Loren over the years! QUOTABLE“Being a rebel can be blended with a lot of discernment, decorum and the ability to be kind and loving and just a really wonderful person.” (Loren) While it's not without its merits, the whole industry of hiring and recruiting was just broken. It was a calling for me that you are either going to be part of a continuous problem or you are going to create a different kind of solution.” (Loren) “I realized that if I was going to launch a business it had to solve a big problem – a problem so relevant that it resonates with anyone in the job search process.” (Loren) “If you don't know how to navigate forward in your career, you need to have a system that is rinseable and repeatable (because) with the churn rate this will happen over and over and over again.” (Loren) “At some point in life when we realize we're miserable, we either continue the same patterns and getting the same jobs … or we take a pause and a new approach.” (Chris) “The real transformation happens when you are developing relationships with 2nd, 3rd, 4th degree connections, which are known as your weaker ties. The weak links are your stronger ties.” (Loren) “The hidden job market is available to every single one of us … and can come through multiple areas – content, conversation, somebody standing in line at the post office. You don't know so you have to keep your eyes and ears open.” (Loren) “This is not about contorting yourself and playing Cirque du Soleil with your career. This is about really advocating and treating yourself as somebody who is going to transform an organization.” (Loren) “You've got to figure out the unique problem that you can solve … You want to really know and be able to articulate what that problem is and what it will change.” (Loren) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Seneca's Letter 13 on “groundless fears” can be found here.More about Stanford's study: "Strength Through Weak Ties" by Mark Granovetter as featured in "Gratitude Through Hard Times: Finding Positive Benefits Through Our Darkest Hours,""Personal Socrates: Questions That Will Upgrade Your Life from Legends & World-Class Performers," by Marc Champagne.Learn about the podcast Big Questions with Cal Fussman.More about the marketing and branding maestro, Seth Godin, available here. The US financial system has been going through a period of uncertainty, with various factors contributing to this state of affairs. One major issue that has been in the news recently is the occurrence of bank runs and mid-size bank insolvencies. These events have caused concerns about the stability of the banking sector and the broader financial system.Another factor that has contributed to the current uncertainty is the massive fluctuation of cryptocurrencies. The prices of popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen significant fluctuations, with prices soaring to record highs at times and plummeting to new lows at others. This volatility has raised questions about the role of cryptocurrencies in the financial system and their potential impact on traditional banking and finance. In addition to these domestic issues, there is also growing concern about China's increasing influence as an international deal broker. As China's economy continues to grow and expand, it is seeking to play a greater role in global finance and trade. This has led to some anxiety about the future of US financial dominance and the potential for China to become a major player in the international financial system. To shed light on these issues, James and his guest, Cal Fussman, are joined by resident financial expert Omid Malekan. Together, they discuss the root causes of the current uncertainty, the issues that are worth worrying over, and what the future may hold for the American financial system. By examining these issues in depth, they hope to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the US financial system in the years ahead.------------Read Omid's book: Re-Architecting Trust: The Curse of History and the Crypto Cure for Money, Markets, and Platforms------------What do YOU think of the show? "If you're connected, there's always hope, there's always a solution. If you feel disconnected, man...it's all on you!"In this episode of the podcast, James Altucher sits down with Cal Fussman to discuss the need for human contact and social connectivity in a world that has been forever changed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Cal shares his personal experience of the daily breakfast group he was a part of for many years with his friend and confidant Larry King, where the motto was "Seize the Day".As the world begins to slowly emerge from the pandemic, Cal and James explore the ways in which our relationships with others have been impacted and the importance of re-establishing these connections. They discuss the value of in-person interactions, the benefits of having a strong support network, and the need for human touch and connection - even if it's giving yourself a daily high-five in the bathroom mirror.Whether it's rekindling old friendships, joining a new community, or simply taking the time to reach out to someone in need, this episode highlights the importance of human connection and the role it plays in our happiness and well-being.------------Visit Notepd.com to read our idea lists & sign up to create your own!My new book Skip the Line is out! My guest today is Kath Murdoch. In today's show, we'll explore leading and learning through the lens of inquiry and how taking on an inquiry stance, both internally and externally, can greatly shape what we learn about ourselves, others, and the world around usFrom the TED X stage to countless conferences, to lecture halls and schools around the globe, Kath has had a huge impact on the field of teaching and learning. She's written 15 books and numerous articles for teachers – including her best-seller ‘The Power of Inquiry' (2015) and two of her latest books Getting Personal With Inquiry Learning and The Wonder of Winsome. If you haven't seen her TED X talk, you should check it out, because it was in this talk that she had the chance to speak so eloquently about The Power of Umm and share how silence allows young people to pick up lose threads of knowledge and reflection that open their minds to the most beautiful moments of curiosity that come alive through the questions that they come up with. Kath emphasizes that it's not the answers that enlighten but rather powerful questions instead which are responsible for sparking deep learning in young people. So in today's episode, Kath and I are going to pull back the curtain on how she has continued to evolve her own learning related to the work she does inspiring teachers and students around the world to do their best work possible. As well, how curiosity, genuine reflection and asking the right questions all play a critical role in helping leaders be the best they can be for the organizations they lead. What was revealed to me through this discussion today was the impact that taking on an inquiry stance has on helping to build such a strong culture of genuine learning across the board in educational organizations. Hope you enjoy this discussion and share it with anyone who you feel will benefit from listening. There are a lot of voices out there today. Everyone has something to say, and there are plenty of platforms to hear that message. But who's asking the questions? Outsiders tend to see the world from a different angle– which is how they make big changes. So how can you ask questions like an outsider? Cal Fussman, author, journalist, and host of the Big Questions podcast, spent his career asking questions of the biggest icons of the last 75 years. Now he's getting an outsider's perspective by asking questions on how to reshape healthcare in America. || LINKS || www.calfussman.com | www.beekeepersnaturals.com/darin | Full Show Notes - https://darinolien.com/how-to-ask-the-questions-an-outsider-would-ask-cal-fussman/

Melissa Llarena stepped off the corporate track and became an entrepreneur after becoming a mom and not being able to find adequate childcare. She doesn't feel like a “pure working mom,” but she doesn't feel like a stay-at-home mom, either. This “in between” status means she's carving out her own path, which requires energy to create the path, in addition to simply walking it. If there's any “crisis” to Melissa's midlife, it's more answering the question: am I going to do what I thought I was meant to do? Now that she's in her forties - and after a reflective exercise with Post-It Notes that you'll have to listen to understand - she has given herself the permission to execute on who she's always been. Guest BioMelissa Llarena is a high-performance coach to moms who have chosen the path of entrepreneurship as their best option for being both a fully present parent and an ambitious woman. Melissa is a mom to three boys; included in that mix are identical twins. Celebrating Turning 40Melissa turned 40 as an expat living in Sydney, Australia. To celebrate, she climbed the Harbour Bridge, even though she's afraid of heights. An iconic tourist destination, the climb is safe, but scary. She was chasing the butterfly feeling in her stomach. She believes that her moments of greatest growth have been the ones when she's got butterflies or big nerves. She asked herself: what can I do to celebrate turning 40 and up the ante that is in integrity with who I am or who I tell the world that I am? Melissa tells herself and the world that she is courageous. So climbing the Harbour Bridge became the idea that was bad-ass, kind of risky, but not crazy, that made that moment super memorable and was culturally relevant to where she was at the time. But as epic as it was, while she was ascending creaky wooden plank stairs and looking at the cars parked below her, she wondered why she chose this particular celebration and not something more….comfortable. Mapping Out Where She's BeenAs she approached 40, Melissa started to map out her life, decade by decade, on Post-It notes stuck to her wall. Milestones each got a Post-It. In her 30's, Melissa became a mom. She got into the labor room for her first-born and realized “I can't' do this.” But what do you do at that point? You power through. After she had her son, she left corporate America because she didn't have childcare she trusted. So she became an entrepreneur and started to build a business. That got a Post-It. Leaving corporate America came with trade-offs that she had to work through. She had to let go of the idea of having a dream house because that came with financial obligations that could only be met with the corporate job. Then she became pregnant with identical twins and, even though it was a single event, they each got their own Post-It. With no history of twins on either side of their family, they were pretty shocked to learn...

In today's episode, Joe McDonough and I have a deep and moving conversation about his son Andrew, who at 14 years old lost his battle with cancer in 2007. Since that time Joe has devoted his life to keeping Andrew's spirit alive through their B+ foundation. In Joe's own words: The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the memory of Andrew, a 14-year-old athlete and ‘A' student from Wilmington, Delaware. January 27, 2007, Andrew helped lead his team to victory in a Pennsylvania state championship soccer tournament. Within 48 hours, he was in cardiac arrest. The diagnosis was AML Leukemia. The prognosis was grim. In fact, doctors didn't expect Andrew to live through the night. Amazingly, Andrew fought for 167 days before going to Heaven on July 14, 2007.In our conversation today, Joe shares many touching memories of his son Andrew Joe also talks about the process he has gone through grieving the loss of his son and the mission of their B+ foundation. Which is the largest provider of financial assistance to families of kids with cancer in the US, helping nearly 3,000 families this year.I first learned of Joe's story as I did my research for my last episode with Cal Fussman. Joe was on Cal's podcast and that is where I first heard his story. I was so moved by his story I reached out to Joe immediately after to invite him on my podcast. My podcast has always been a passion project of mine. Although there are many expenses that I pay out of pocket to keep this podcast going. I've never asked for money from my listeners, and never intend to. Even though I do not have a patron page, I am putting a request out there to everyone listening. If my podcast has helped you in any way or if you have found value in it, I would love to ask you this very special favor. After listening to my episode with Joe, it would mean the world to me to have you head on over to his website at https://www.bepositive.org/ways-to-give and make a donation to support the foundation. If you are on Twitter, please look them up at @bepositivefdn and let them know you heard Joe's story on my podcast and donated to their cause. On the show today, New York Times bestselling author and longtime Esquire writer, Cal Fussman. He is also the host of the Big Questions podcast I first came across Cal's work more than 6 years ago when I heard him interviewed by well known podcaster Tim Ferriss. I was immediately drawn to Cal's amazing ability to tell stories. As you will see in our conversation today, Cal has a very special way with words. For many years, Cal wrote the ‘What I've Learned' column for Esquire magazine where he had the chance to interview world class leaders from various fields. Here is just a small list of some of the brilliant people he has interviewed over the years:Mikhail Gorbachev, Jimmy Carter, Joe Biden, Ted Kennedy, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen, Dr. Dre, Quincy Jones, Woody Allen, Barbara Walters, Pelé, Yao Ming, Serena Williams, John Wooden, and he also spend a week with Muhammad Ali to write a cover feature about his life. According to Cal himself--"Questions have guided my life ever since I was seven years old and sent a letter with a question to the President of the United States, and got a reply. Over the years, questions have taken me around the world and into interviews with hundreds of the most talented, compelling and powerful people on earth.:In today's episode, Cal discusses the art of listening and the main reasons why he has devoted his life to reshaping health care. He also discussed, in detail, the lessons he learned from interviewing former Soviet Union leader Mikail Gorbachev in an Esquire article published in September 2008. Today we're privileged and delighted to have one of the world's leading researchers in neuroscience, Anil Seth. Anil is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex and Founding Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science. He has published over 100 scientific papers and book chapters and is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Neuroscience of Consciousness. His TED talk on consciousness and controlled hallucination has been viewed over 12 million times and stands as one of TED's most popular science talks. Today we'll dig deep into (what Cal Fussman would call) the big questions of neuroscience: Is my reality the same as yours (do we see the same color red)? What does it mean to be you? Why did we evolve to have consciousness? Are different states of consciousness such as we see in comas, sleep, and general anesthesia measurable and clearly definable? What is consciousness and where in the brain can we find it? Why does a brain adapted to basic, hunter gatherer survival also include the capacity to compose symphonies, write philosophy, debug software code, go to the moon and ponder questions about the nature of its own existence? Will we ever be able to deconstruct the basic elements of consciousness and reconstruct them in a computer AI? This episode was a lot of fun and will probably be one of my most favorite. With that said, exploring our current understanding of the brain, consciousness, and the fundamental reality of who we are and how we experience the world around us is just not something you can knock out in an hour. That's why I can't recommend to you enough to check out Anil's new book, “Being You.” With that said, let's get started…

Cal Fussman, an American journalist, author, and the host of Big Questions Podcast with Cal Fussman, arguably one of Larry King's best friends, especially towards his later year. They have breakfast every morning for 13 years until the lockdown for Covid19 happened. Even then, Cal still tried to get together with Larry as much as he can. Larry has done more than 60,000 interviews, and he's the legend of the Radio host. So when I heard about Larry's past away, I have to call up Cal, other than catching up with him, I also want to learn everything about Larry. His origin story, his life, and his storytelling style! On a side note, Cal also did an obituary for Larry King on this podcast. It's called Larry King: The Great Farewell. Make sure you go check it out as well. I write about all my podcasts! People are losing their jobs. And schools have stopped functioning properly. The "normal" way of society is on pause. And we don't know for how long. So I'm posting this interview with Cal Fussman about reinvention. Because it's light-hearted. And helps you find your direction within. In this podcast, you'll hear creative ideas to learn and create and build success outside of the norm, which is exactly what we need to be doing right now. Also, I highly recommend Cal's podcast called "Big Questions." He's a world-renowned interviewer and has with guests who will repeatedly blow your mind like Bruce Lee, Kobe Bryant, Larry King, me! And more. This episode is actually an episode from "Big Questions." So go check it out https://www.calfussman.com/podcast I write about all my podcasts!
