After hair metal all but destroyed heavy metal in the late 80's and early 90's, things were a bit grim. Grim in the same sort of way that Birmingham, England was grim in the late 60's. Perhaps one of the silver linings to emerge out of the make-up and hairspray laden aftermath of glam was the down to earth, retro metal infused sounds emerging out of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, specifically, the “Seattle scene” which brought us an entirely new genre of metal (aka “grunge”) that served as a desperately needed palette cleanser and helped to breathe new life into the dystopian landscape which had become the world of metal.   Enter Seattle, Washington's SOUNDGARDEN, a staple of the Seattle “grunge” scene of the early 1990's that combined the best elements of classic Zeppelin and Sabbath built on a foundation of unpredictable & untraditional riffs chock full of heavy alternate tunings, ugly chords, and screaming vocals, conjuring a heavy 70's infused sound which is both simultaneously retro and brutally modern.  It's time to saddle up your “goat camel” and call the “dingo hunter” to learn more about the rich culture of “The Belgish” that goes far beyond “waffles and white beers”. Find out what used to put the “high” in high school, get ready for some “karaoke reflections” (including the best Creed impression ever) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's alternative metal mavericks, SOUNDGARDEN   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. All Hail Kim Thayil! . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Few bands are more rightly associated with the rise of alternative music from the underground to the mainstream than Soundgarden. Starting out in the mid 80s as a prototypical Seattle band backed by Sub Pop, produced by Jack Endino, and indebted to the heavy thud of 70s Black Sabbath combined with punk aggression, the original line-up quickly coalesced, releasing a slew of material in just three years. With Sub Pop in financial dire straits, the band recorded the debut album for SST, and showcased Chris Cornell's unique falsetto paired with the band's growing technical proficiency. A year later, they would end the decade on A&M records and release Louder Than Love, which further evolved the band into the metal sound that drove original bassist Hiro Yamamoto to quit, unhappy with the musical direction of the band. Within these recordings are the DNA that would lead to the breakthrough Badmotorfinger, and set the band up as the pre-eminent hard rock band of the 90s.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Hands All Over (from Louder Than Love) 14:48 - Nothing To Say (from Screaming Life EP) 32:07 - Flower (from Ultramega OK) 42:26 - Head Injury (from Ultramega OK) 50:46 - Ugly Truth (from Louder Than Love) Outro - I Awake (from Louder Than Love)   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we’re discussing the almighty Soundgarden. Although they are technically considered pioneers of grunge, these guys transcended genres and were some of the most brilliant songwriters to ever gain massive mainstream success. The suicide of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017 put a tragic end to their successful reunion, in addition to breaking Mike’s heart for a legit 2 years. This is a great episode, everyone.Closing track: “4th of July” from Superunknown (1994)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify!https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincJoin our Patreon for bonus episodes, early access to shows, and more!https://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverInstagram:Follow Mike @popejesseventura for show updates and @pandermonkey for original musicFollow Alex @motherpuncherMike’s Picks: Superunknown (1994) — Best AlbumBadmotorfinger (1991) — Personal FavoriteScreaming Life/Fopp (1987/1988) — Worst RecordDown on the Upside (1996) — Least FavoriteAlex’s Picks:Badmotorfinger (1991) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteDown on the Upside (1996) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Screaming Life/Fopp (1987/1988)Ultramega OK (1988)Louder Than Love (1989)Badmotorfinger (1991)Superunknown (1994)Down on the Upside (1996)King Animal (2012)

At least this comeback episode will be our deepest, most complex yet, right?Eh, not really. Instead, we kinda try a different route to sorta explain the feel and emotion overall of the album instead of talking about the various tracks. Something short and sweet, y'know?Seriously, we promise the next episode will be much longer.
