After hair metal all but destroyed heavy metal in the late 80's and early 90's, things were a bit grim. Grim in the same sort of way that Birmingham, England was grim in the late 60's. Perhaps one of the silver linings to emerge out of the make-up and hairspray laden aftermath of glam was the down to earth, retro metal infused sounds emerging out of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, specifically, the “Seattle scene” which brought us an entirely new genre of metal (aka “grunge”) that served as a desperately needed palette cleanser and helped to breathe new life into the dystopian landscape which had become the world of metal.   Enter Seattle, Washington's SOUNDGARDEN, a staple of the Seattle “grunge” scene of the early 1990's that combined the best elements of classic Zeppelin and Sabbath built on a foundation of unpredictable & untraditional riffs chock full of heavy alternate tunings, ugly chords, and screaming vocals, conjuring a heavy 70's infused sound which is both simultaneously retro and brutally modern.  It's time to saddle up your “goat camel” and call the “dingo hunter” to learn more about the rich culture of “The Belgish” that goes far beyond “waffles and white beers”. Few bands are more rightly associated with the rise of alternative music from the underground to the mainstream than Soundgarden. Starting out in the mid 80s as a prototypical Seattle band backed by Sub Pop, produced by Jack Endino, and indebted to the heavy thud of 70s Black Sabbath combined with punk aggression, the original line-up quickly coalesced, releasing a slew of material in just three years. With Sub Pop in financial dire straits, the band recorded the debut album for SST, and showcased Chris Cornell's unique falsetto paired with the band's growing technical proficiency. A year later, they would end the decade on A&M records and release Louder Than Love, which further evolved the band into the metal sound that drove original bassist Hiro Yamamoto to quit, unhappy with the musical direction of the band. Although they are technically considered pioneers of grunge, these guys transcended genres and were some of the most brilliant songwriters to ever gain massive mainstream success. The suicide of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017 put a tragic end to their successful reunion, in addition to breaking Mike’s heart for a legit 2 years. Como siempre, cuando empieza una temporada tenemos gran cantidad de nuevas ideas, proyectos y mejoras que esperamos poder llevar a cabo durante la misma. Algunas de ellas, las más importantes, serán de tipo técnico, pero no queremos adelantar acontecimientos, y las iremos anunciando según las vayamos poniendo en marcha. Lo que sí os podemos adelantar, sin ningún tipo de rubor, es que estamos preparando un especial 100 programas para principios de 2021. ¡Estad atentos! De momento, aquí tenéis un nuevo programa para vuestro use y disfrute. Esperamos que todos estéis bien y con muchas ganas de escuchar música en vinilo. Seguimos con las entregas de las famosas sesiones ofrecidas por el disc-jockey y productor John Peel. En esta ocasión dedicada a los 80, una década que, aunque no fue especialmente buena para los grupos de rock clásico, sirvió para acercarnos a nuevos sonidos: new wave, rock gótico, y muchas más tendencias y modas, algunas de ellas olvidables y prescindibles, pero otras muchas que crearon las bases de un sonido posterior. También llegó al cenit la música disco, no como la vimos en los 70 donde hubieron grandes bandas a medio camino entre el funky y el disco. En los 80 aparecería un sonido mucho más bailable y que, por suerte, ha quedado en su mayor parte en el olvido, y sólo los más fieles visitantes de las discotecas de moda retienen en su cabeza. Famed Seattle producer and Skin Yard guitarist Jack Endino joins the program to discuss his work on the 2017 remix of the Soundgarden record Ultramega OK. He also talks about his work with Nirvana, Mudhoney, Green River and more while giving us his first person perspective of the Seattle Grunge scene from inception. Jack Endino (born 1964) is an American producer and musician based in Seattle, United States. Long associated with Seattle label Sub Pop and the grunge movement, Endino worked on seminal albums from bands including Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Nirvana. Endino was also the guitarist for the Seattle band Skin Yard. endino.com

Coming in at number 23 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1988 record from Soundgarden, Ultramega OK. Joining Bakko as this EP's guest host is Dr. Fukk himself, Ralph Viera.
