Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

I hate rain, Slackers,This week, we're digging into ten rainy day songs that capture the gray and the heavy. Spanning the late '70s to the late '90s, the list pulls from dark corners and quiet moments—think industrial beats, NY alt metal, acoustic ballads, and lyrics that can get pretty dreary. It's the kind of music that fits a slow drizzle or a full downpour, perfect for staring out a window, preferably with a hot cup of coffee. Mildly depressing? Maybe. Carthartic? Also, maybe. But probably.Got a rainy day song I missed? Hit us up on X, Instagram, and YouTube @stuckpodx or head on over to the The Stuck in the Middle Podcast page on Facebook. Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. This episode takes us back to a time when Pearl Jam's popularity was skyrocketing. MTV Unplugged had took place, the Jeremy music video was out and the band garnered a lot of attention traveling on the Lollapalooza tour as one of the afternoon openers. This episode covers a Lollapalooza show from Fairfax County, Virginia where the band were in their prime and "all the rage". The episode will cover not just Pearl Jam's impact on the festival, but also the festival's impact on the culture of the early 90's. This show is seen as somewhat of a pillar moment for the band this summer because as they were rising up the charts, so were their Seattle brethren Soundgarden traveling on the same tour. Right around this time as both Vedder and Cornell became the defacto faces of the grunge scene, people were starting to pick up on the collaboration that they did for Temple Of The Dog a year prior. Hunger Strike was blossoming into a massive hit and wasn't something that was played often until they decided to join forces at this show. From there, it became one of those rare moments that people salivated for. They'd continue to bust it out on occasion during this tour, including during a random side stage performance in Phoenix. This episode is produced a little bit differently since we are only working with eight songs. You'll get the rare experience of listening to an entire show on this podcast! Of course we stop and chat in between, but every song will be played in full with Even Flow as a lone exception. This episode also features a conversation about the newly retired Aerosmith and how that happening this past week tied in perfectly with this episode. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem. Steve reminisces about his early concert experiences, correcting his memory about his first concert, which turned out to be The Cure's "Wish" tour followed by Lollapalooza ‘92 before U2's Zoo TV show. They discuss iconic venues like The World (now known by various names) and Alpine Valley, sharing stories from their concert adventures. Steve recalls a memorable moment during an Ice Cube performance at Lollapalooza involving a sod fight instigated by the rapper, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The conversation shifts to their DJing days at a bar called the Tender Trap, where Steve and Charles spun records for an alternative night. They reminisce about attending concerts together, including a memorable encounter with L7 at Lounge Axe, arranged through Louie, who happened to be related to the drummer. Steve also recounts their experiences at House of Blues shows, including a chaotic Danzig concert where the crowd was rowdy, and a Monster Magnet show where Louie's connection secured them access to the Foundation Room. They delve into their shared love for bands like The Psychedelic Furs and their numerous concert outings together, highlighting the influence of music on their lives and relationships. Reflecting on their concert experiences, they share anecdotes of meeting band members and navigating the vibrant Chicago music scene. Throughout the episode, Steve and Charles' passion for live music shines through, offering listeners a glimpse into their memorable concert journeys.Steve also reminisces about a memorable encounter at the Foundation Room, where he found himself chatting with members of Stabbing Westward and Monster Magnet. The lively atmosphere of the venue, complete with private rooms for bands and a third-floor balcony offering prime seating, sets the stage for unexpected interactions. Steve recounts how Monster Magnet's Phil reached out to invite Lisa, his girlfriend, to their show, ultimately sending a limo to pick her up from a wedding reception. Reflecting on past concerts, Steve shares his disappointing experiences at shows by System of a Down and The Killers, citing crowd behavior and sound quality as factors. After the death of Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone, Chris Cornell used his gift of music and songwriting to channel his grief. What was initially meant to be a single song released as tribute, transformed into a full album bringing together a supergroup of talented artists to capture a moment in time that would create one of the most memorable collaborations of the 1990's.

The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and  'top music videos of the 90s' won. This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basically talk about what these meant to me at a time when the art of the music video meant so much.Watch the music videos: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBOB4Hahu9llH-Gw2dGTjWMiiGt0_I4T1&si=M0-mgRBOJCaV85HY on Spotify : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dZ1Pt0xNpCY82KoJUzXIn?si=a38090cbad2e40bb--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Host: Lauren @lauren_melanie Follow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

Temple Of The Dog's short-lived status as a Seattle rock supergroup got its start as a tribute project for the late Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, and ended up yielding one self-titled album that became a platinum seller. The idea to record songs for Wood, who died of an overdose at age 24, was the late Chris Cornell of Soundgarden's way of coping with the grief of losing his friend, and the band he recruited as the songs became a full album included not only fellow Seattle musicians who would go on to form Pearl Jam, but a then-unknown singer who had flown up from San Diego, Eddie Vedder. Out of tragedy came a collaboration between two of Seattle's most legendary acts. Lead singer of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood passed away from a heroin overdose in 1990. His former roommate was none other than Chris Cornell, who wrote a couple of songs as a tribute to his late while touring Europe with Soundgarden. Cornell reached out to former Mother Love Bone bandmates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard to make a record out of it, who had just recently invited Eddie Vedder to rehearse for their newly formed band Pearl Jam. The result was Temple of the Dog, a snapshot of two massively successful rock bands months before both hit mainstream success.Tracklist Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike Temple of the Dog - Your Savior Third Person Lurkin - The Silver Key David Bowie - God Knows I'm Good This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.
