Soundgarden emerged as a pioneering force in the Seattle grunge scene, bringing elements of heavy metal and alternative rock into what would come to be known as the Seattle sound.  The group originally found lead singer and primary songwriter Chris Cornell singing from behind a drum set where he was the group's percussionist, but it became clear that this would not work well in live concerts, so Cornell switched to vocals and rhythm guitar while turning over percussion work to Matt Cameron.  Badmotorfinger, the third studio album, finds the group just before it's breakout into grunge superstardom, an event that would occur with the release of their next album.  Taking its name from a spoof on a popular Montrose song, Badmotorfinger sports a strong heavy metal sound, but with tighter songwriting, and a bit of complexity in time signatures and tunings.  It would become the band's highest charting album to date, peaking at number 39 on the Billboard 200 chart, and going double platinum by 1996.  It was also considered a success by critics, and was nominated in 1992 for a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance. While the album definitely has grunge elements in it, as a whole it may be considered more alternative, heavy metal, or hard rock. The band's development makes this album more difficult to pin down into a single genre, and perhaps this makes for a more interesting listening experience. We hope you enjoy this foray into the roots of the grunge movement as Lynch brings us the album for today's podcast. Rusty CageThe opening track to the album was the third single released, and reflects a longing for freedom and a breaking out of the “rusty cage” that life can be.  The guitars are tuned down significantly, giving the riffs a jangling sound.  Johnny Cash would cover it a few years later, turning the song into a country anthem.  OutshinedThis track combines themes of self-doubt and internal struggle with appearances of external success and confidence, creating a clash within the singer.  Cornell creates depth and passion through his vocals.  “Show me the power, child.  I'd like to say that I'm down on my knees today.”Jesus Christ PoseUnlike many tracks, this first single released from the album is credited to all four band members.  The lyrics are a rant against the hypocrisy of religious leaders who turn belief into a means of acquiring power.  This track is an example of a Soundgarden song that is more metal than grunge at this point.Slaves & BulldozersThis song is often described as “doom metal,” and utilizes drop-tuned guitars to create a slow burn, darker sound.  The lyrics encourage the listener to consider how their situation may be turning them into either an obedient slave or a nihilistic bulldozer.  It was the last song Soundgarden played live before Chris Cornell's death in 2017. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Cosby Show”This staple of 80's sitcom had their final episode and went off the air in April 1992.   STAFF PICKS:I Want to Touch You by Catherine WheelWayne kicks off the staff picks with the Manchester sound.  This post-psychedelic song deals with the raw emotions of a shy guy who is infatuated with a particular woman.  “It would really make my day if you'd only move away, 'cause I'm scared that if you stay, I'll want to touch you.” Just Take My Heart by Mr. BigRob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 16.  It was the fourth single from the second album by Mr. Big entitled “Lean Into It.”  The song features some excellent finger picking on an electric guitar toned down to an almost acoustic consistency.  Eric Martin is the lead singer and co-writer of the song.Cold Day in Hell by Gary MooreBruce features a guitar virtuoso from Northern Ireland.  Gary Moore got his start in an Irish band called Skid Row in the late 1960's but is better known as a member of Thin Lizzy.  This lead-off track to his ninth solo studio album called “After Hours” is a straightforward announcement that the man and his lover would never be getting back together. Silent Lucidity by QueensrycheLynch closes out the staff picks with beautiful and epic piece off the Empire album.  Chris DeGarmo, guitarist and primary songwriter for the group, was inspired to write this song after reading a book about lucid dreams.  The first iteration of the song was acoustic guitar and vocals only, and instrumentation was added later. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Simpsons by Danny GattonA rock/blues guitar cover of the main theme of “The Simpsons” takes us out for today's session.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. One of the earlier bands to form in what would become the biggest music scene of the 90s, Soundgarden started up in Seattle in 1984 when two friends from Illinois named Kim and Hiro formed a band with a local drummer named Chris. The band blended influences and styles from post punk and new wave to Beatles and metal, slowly forming a sound that was all their own. Along the way Chris Cornell took the front, took off his shirt, and the band started to take off, especially with the addition of a few new band members. Soundgarden brought the founders of SubPop together and brought major labels sniffing around the scene, though they themselves took a more considered and well-paced path to rock stardom. In this episode we are blessed with the presence of returning guest Hanif Aburraqib to help chart the journey of this excellent band, from their earliest days through their third album, Badmotorfinger. After hair metal all but destroyed heavy metal in the late 80's and early 90's, things were a bit grim. Grim in the same sort of way that Birmingham, England was grim in the late 60's. Perhaps one of the silver linings to emerge out of the make-up and hairspray laden aftermath of glam was the down to earth, retro metal infused sounds emerging out of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, specifically, the “Seattle scene” which brought us an entirely new genre of metal (aka “grunge”) that served as a desperately needed palette cleanser and helped to breathe new life into the dystopian landscape which had become the world of metal.   Enter Seattle, Washington's SOUNDGARDEN, a staple of the Seattle “grunge” scene of the early 1990's that combined the best elements of classic Zeppelin and Sabbath built on a foundation of unpredictable & untraditional riffs chock full of heavy alternate tunings, ugly chords, and screaming vocals, conjuring a heavy 70's infused sound which is both simultaneously retro and brutally modern.  It's time to saddle up your “goat camel” and call the “dingo hunter” to learn more about the rich culture of “The Belgish” that goes far beyond “waffles and white beers”. Find out what used to put the “high” in high school, get ready for some “karaoke reflections” (including the best Creed impression ever) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's alternative metal mavericks, SOUNDGARDEN   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. Shortly after the release of their major label debut, Seattle's Soundgarden found themselves at a crossroads. Founding bassist Hiro Yamamoto parted ways with the band, leaving a massive hole to fill. Moreover, Soundgarden had exhausted their entire vault of songs on previous releases, compelling them to start from scratch. In early 1991, however, guitarist & vocalist Chris Cornell experienced an unprecedented wave of creativity which birthed new ideas for Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and an upcoming Cameron Crowe film set in Seattle. Despite the daunting search for Hiro's replacement, newcomer Ben Shepherd proved himself more than capable of the role, injecting a unique punk edge and energy into the band. Starting from nothing wasn't necessarily a bad thing either, as it forced the band to take creative risks on their next album. No idea was too crazy. These new songs were packed with intricate rhythms, soaring vocal performances, and, of course, riffs. The result of these sessions set the pace for everything to come. The Soundgarden as we know them today had finally arrived. Join us as we delve into Soundgarden's 1991 opus, Badmotorfinger. In addition to helping spawn Seattle's grunge scene in the late '80s and reshape popular music in the '90s, Soundgarden had an incredible string of successful albums in the '90s: 1991's Badmotorfinger, 1994's Superunknown (No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart) and 1996's Down on the Upside (No. 2 on the Billboard 200).

Every now and then you come across an album that becomes a benchmark moment for you; like, life existed before that album and then the world shifted and things weren't the same after that.  My own personal list includes the likes of: Vs. Recipe For Hate. Question The Answers. Badmotorfinger. The '59 Sound. The Low End Theory. Stay Positive. 36 Chambers. Caution. 1372 Overton Park. And now, realistically, The Great American Novel. If you're unfamiliar, Proper. are a three-piece formed in NYC roughly 5/6 years ago (as The Great Wight initially) but hailing really from a variety of locations across the country and bringing with them all of their collective experiences and musical influences and creating something that hasn't really been done before. I remember hearing their last album, I Spent The Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better admittedly a little late and thinking "damn...I've never really heard anything like this before." The new album, The Great American Novel, takes all of the things that were great about the last one and pushes the needles way past 10. It's important music. It's music about alienation and about not fitting in and about being a queer person of color in a land that, despite it being 2022, is at times becoming even less comfortable with people that check those boxes. It's raw and it's powerful and it's somehow still hopeful. Oh, and if fucking shreds. I feel lucky that we were able to catch up not just with Erik Garlington who spearheads the whole thing but with the full band (Natasha Johnson on bass and Elijah Watson on drums and whom you may also know from his "day job" as a journalist for Okay Player). The guys then compare two albums released in the fall of 1991, Soundgarden's ‘Badmotorfinger' and U2's ‘Achtung Baby' (3:15). They start off by discussing ‘Badmotorfinger' and the amazing productivity of Chris Cornell in the fall 1991 and the overall innovation of the album. The guys then discuss U2's ‘Achtung Baby'; they discuss the tensions the band had when recording the album and how the documentary ‘From the Sky Down' details the trials and tribulations of making this album. They discuss how the band writing the song “One”  was the breakthrough that saved the album and the band itself. The guys then give their preferences about which album they prefer. Asif then discusses OCD, a topic suggested by a listener (28:51). Asif goes over the symptoms and how common it is. He then goes over the difference between OCD and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD).  He then discusses whether OCD is genetic and the recommended treatment for OCD. It's been three entire decades since the celebrated year of 1991 in regards to rock and roll music has passed.  Here in the U.S., it was a hangover of sorts from a ten year stretch of excess and irreverence - symbolized by the financially successful spate of inane and bloated hair metal bands - fondly known as the 1980s.   Back in '91 the world was witnessing the wind down of the Persian Gulf War, enjoying OJ Simpson's reprisal of the beloved law man Nordberg in the cinematic sequel to THE NAKED GUN alongside Leslie Nielsen, and crawling into the capabilities of Al Gore's genius invention of the internet.   Furthermore, 1991 also saw the release of an exceptionally large quantity of popular music recordings. A few of these very well received recordings include "Use Your Illusion I and II" by Guns N' Roses, "Out of Time" by R.E.M., "Diamonds and Pearls" by Prince & The New Power Generation, "Death Certificate" by Ice Cube, "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine, "Achtung Baby" by U2, "Badmotorfinger" by Soundgarden, "Emotions" by Mariah Carey, "Trompe le Monde" by Pixies and Metallica's self-titled black album, just to name a few.  The impressive list goes on and on. There are many observers and musical academics who consider 1991 just as meaningful as another absurdly historical year - 1967 - with its seminal recordings by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground.   It is truly remarkable that three of 1991's most enduring recordings were released on the exact same day; Tuesday September 24, 1991.  On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, each Buzzard examines them in great detail: Roger pays no "Nevermind" by Nirvana, George educates us on "The Low End Theory" by A Tribe Called Quest, and Pete conjures up some "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers.   Featured Buzzard-at-Large Kevin Colgan colors up the commentary by waxing poetic on his nostalgic take of each album.   So please, lock the door behind you, adjust the towel, take your seat and politely hit the fan's setting to "on."  You're walking in on a purely Gen X session of FDB.

Richard Black is the singer for the band Shark Island. They played in the LA area beginning in the late 70's through to the early 90's. They released one major label album and a handful of songs on soundtracks. But that was it. Richard fronted the short lived hard rock supergroup Contraband and then left music completely. But after finding a new passion in metal sculpture, Shark Island has returned with 2 studio albums and one live release. Richard is very candid with me and we spent a long time discussing his careers; setting bars low to avoid disappointment; watching grunge change the musical landscape, particularly in LA;demoing songs with Skid Row as his backing band, and recording in 432 instead 440. This week Laura Carbone joins us from Berlin. She's released a Live album, Live at Rockpalast that's the closest thing to a live show we've had in over a year. Why? Because it's a live album with absolutely no overdubs or corrections. We talk about how an accidental gift of Nirvana's Nevermind changed her musical perspective, causing her to put down her flute and pick up a guitar. She also talks about why she used demo vocals in the final mix of an album to get a true take over a polished one. And I wanted her to explain the differences between European and US audiences. Follow her on social media. Pick up Live at RockPalast on Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Give us a review and help us rise on the charts. There's merch designed by Mark Dancey of Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger fame on performanceanx.threadless.com. Or treat us to a cup a coffee on ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now let's join the conversation with Laura Carbone on Performance Anxiety on Pantheon Podcasts.

We welcome the arrival of Peter Holmstrӧm. In addition to playing guitar for The Dandy Warhols, he's been busy with his project Pete International Airport. He explains how that began and who else is involved. We also get some great Dandy's history. They've been together for over 25 years, so they've done just about everything you can think of, including writing both the longest AND the shortest songs you can imagine. Pete talks about the band's relationship with David Bowie and how that started and how they got to play live with him. We wrap up with some great news about some new projects Pete is involved in, including a third Pete International Airport album! Follow him on social media (most of them are petedx11), follow the Dandy's, follow us @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, review. I'm still taking non-committal coffee @ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch with our logo (designed by Mark Dancey of Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger fame) is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. So fasten your seatbelts and bring your seats to an upright position. It's time for Peter Holmstrӧm of The Dandy Warhols & PIA on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

We're joined by a musician who thrives when he's uncomfortable. Tobias Nathaniel's greatest enemy is muscle memory. That's why he switched from guitar to organ. He formed The Black Heart Procession and kept his penchant for being uncomfortable by playing instruments like sheetmetal and being the wedding band for Melvins drummer Dale Crover's nuptials. He also explains how he inadvertently wrote Rick & Morty's Evil Morty Theme.Toby moved to Serbia to show solidarity with vampires & possibly join a vampire class action law suit. He also tells us how Madonna broke his heart. He's started a new band called The Red Step that sounds like garage rock meets post punk. It's raw and gloomy in the best ways. He also discusses his performance anxiety and how he became a front man for his band. Follow The Red Step on social media & pick up their debut on Pravda records. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. This week's Performance Anxiety features Mark Dancey. Mark played guitar with the criminally underrated band, Big Chief. He's also an artist. You might recognize the work he did for Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger album. We discuss the band, his artwork, his influences and hear some great stories about making a concept album/soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist.

ARIA-winning singer-songwriter and I discuss his unlikely favorite album - the brutal rock classic from Soundgarden, 1991's ‘Badmotorfinger'. We talk about how the album's ongoing influence on Josh's guitar playing, how he was converted to Soundgarden from Guns n Roses, whether rock stars are deliberately trying to look like Jesus and why, Johnny Cash's cover version of ‘Rusty Cage', how Soundgarden's level of craft was a rejection of alt-rock stereotypes, Guns n Roses history of terrible drummers and how your attitude to rock music changes as you age. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007.
