Feeling tone, the pleasure or pain we take in experience, is a central part of dharma. As an aggregate, a foundation of mindfulness, a link in the chain of dependent origination, appreciating, understanding, and directly experiencing Vedana is a key to experiencing freedom.Jon and Doug have a lively discussion on this topic.Support the showGo to our website to leave a comment, buy us a coffee, or see further notes and links: https://digginthedharma.com/

On today's episode, Dr. Rick and Forrest focus on one of the most important skills we can learn: how we can become more aware of all the parts of our experience, avoid being captured by any one of them, and work with those parts more skillfully. One of the key tools we have for accomplishing this is vedanā, or the “feeling tone” of our experience. Author and meditation teacher Dr. Danny Penman joins the show to explore the role of vedanā, how we can help our brain interpret the world more accurately, and practical tools for relaxing suffering and enjoying life. About our Guest: Danny Penman is a meditation teacher, an award-winning writer and journalist, and the co-author of the classic Mindfulness with Dr. Mark Williams. Dr. Williams was one of the original creators of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Mark and Danny are back with the new book Deeper Mindfulness: The New Way to Rediscover Calm in a Chaotic World. Forrest is now writing on Substack, check out his work there. Key Topics:0:00: Introduction1:40: How a major injury started Danny's professional relationship with mindfulness practice10:45: Vedanā, and unpacking the different aspects of our experience18:20: The sensations that precede our thoughts24:45: How the brain creates a model of reality, and whether that model is accurate29:40: How an undisciplined relationship with feeling tone creates unnecessary suffering37:00: Accepting a feeling vs. approving of a situation44:10: Practical steps to feeling our feelings48:00: Finding enjoyment in new habits, especially somatically57:50: RecapYou can watch this episode on YouTube.Support the Podcast: We're on Patreon!

Ayyā Dhammadīpā was a special guest of the Wise Spirit Buddhist Community (of which Gregory is the guiding teacher). She started us off with a guided meditation on the sense doors (you can skip to minute 31:30 if you would like to just hear the Dharma talk). The talk is a profound one around the five Khandas: Form, Vedana (feeling tone), Perception, Mental Formations, and Consciousness. Please support Ayya and her teachings by giving Dana at https://dassanaya.org/giving. S
(Gaia House) A guided meditation, Dharma reflection, and the answers (only) to some questions on the theme. Vedanā is not an easy word to translate, (maybe Niceness Opinion gets close). Yet, it is a very subtle and significant teaching, about a very subtle and significant event-maker, that when followed through with, a subtle and significant freedom becomes available for us. In this practice session, we will uncover the subliminal happening of vedanā, drop our rigid belief in what it commands, and create unbelievable well-being through a more skilful way of relating to it, and to all life.
Reflection and Practice We have this assumption of a self at the center of our experiences: our thoughts, our emotions, our senses. While relatively true, dharma practice points to the underlying illusion of self. Notice how that sense of self arises in relation to the five aggregates. If you relax the activity of thinking and doing around the aggregates, is that sense of self still there? Can you actually locate it? The Five Aggregates: Form (body, etc.), Vedana (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), Perception (labeling from past history), Volitional Impulses (thinking, emotions, actions), Consciousness (sensory field). This recording was edited and prepared for publication by volunteer Aruna Bala.
