In this episode of The Art of Being Well, Dr. Will Cole sits down with Kim Rogers to explore overlooked root causes behind chronic gut issues, inflammation, and immune dysregulation. Kim shares her personal journey through years of unexplained symptoms, including mold exposure, Lyme disease, and persistent gut dysfunction. They discuss why parasites are far more common than most people realize and how they can impact digestion, mental health, and overall resilience. This conversation unpacks why many symptoms are dismissed as “normal” and what they may actually be signaling. Dr. Cole and Kim emphasize the importance of addressing terrain, not just chasing symptoms. In Everything Is Fine, I'll Just Work Harder: Confessions of A Former Badass (Street Noise Books, 2025), Professor Cara Gormally draws us into the familiar academic world of chronic busyness. In panel after panel, Cara brings us into a life numbed by overwork. Then, as this graphic memoir shows us, during an ordinary early-morning run, Cara's watch dings with a Facebook friend request. Their rapist wants to “friend” them. Cara always had a long to-do list; always had many projects; always was busy. But as their rapist continued to send friend requests and tried to reconnect with them, they began to lose their grip on their work, projects, and relationships. But then Cara connects with a therapist who guides them through a long but powerful process of healing. And Cara works to desensitize, reprocess, excavate and relive the old wounds in order to move past them and heal. This episode explores: Cara's path to academia; how she discovered her love of science; how art and writing can help us heal; the work of going to therapy; what radical self-acceptance is; why overwork can be a sign of a trauma response; the risks and rewards of changing; and the importance of writing communities. Your brain is the most remarkable thing in the known universe. Always trying to mend itself, and always trying to protect you, it's in a constant state of flux — adapting, reconfiguring, finding new pathways. And it has an astonishing capacity for recovery. Rachel Barr struggled through years of devastating loss, heartache, and uncertainty until neuroscience gave her the first spark of self-belief she had felt in her adult life — and proof that, because of the brain's near-infinite potential for neuroplastic change, it's never too late to carve out neural pathways to form new habits, new skills, and new ways of thinking.Whether you want to nerd-out on neuroscientific acronyms, finally understand what's going on in your head, or take refuge in a book that's like a warm hug for your mind, How to Make Your Brain Your Best Friend is a delight-filled, evidence-based guide to taking better care of your brain — so it, in turn, will take better care of you. Our guest is: Rachel Barr, who holds a master's degree in molecular neuroscience. She wrote How to Make Your Brain Your Best Friend while working on her Ph.D. Her videos as “Rachel the Neuroscientist” demystify the fundamental principles of brain science, empowering people to make informed decisions about their mental health. She was born and raised in Fife, studied in Bristol, and is now based in Quebec, with Gnocchi the cat. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who is an academic writing coach and editor. She is the producer and show host of the Academic Life podcast. Together, they explore the science behind A2 protein, how industrial farming changed the structure of milk, and why returning to ancestral dairy may be one of the most powerful steps for healing. Most of us are busier, more “optimized,” and more connected than ever - yet somehow feel less alive. Why? And what would it look like to reclaim a deeper, wilder sense of humanness in a world obsessed with control? This week, Oliver Burkeman, bestselling author of Four Thousand Weeks and Meditations for Mere Mortals, returns to explore the paradox at the heart of modern life: the more we chase mastery, certainty, and perfect systems, the more we squeeze out the very aliveness we're craving. From the illusion of control to the quiet courage of letting go, we dig into how to live fully now, not “one day when everything's sorted.”Together we explore:Aliveness vs. optimization: why feeling in control can be the enemy of feeling alive — and how to make room for vitality again.“Letting go” without giving up: Elizabeth Gilbert's reframe you're not losing control; you never had it, only anxiety.Productive discomfort tolerance: sitting with the first five messy minutes, parenting, deep work, reading, and why difficulty isn't a personal failing.Resilience as release: from kintsugi to self-trust, why strength often arrives after the break, and why gripping harder rarely works.Plans that don't kill the work: using structure as a North Star, not a taskmaster, so projects keep their spark.Spontaneity on schedule? The weird trap of “time-boxing serendipity,” and the liberating truth that every moment is a choice.Comparison culture: inside vs. outside, and why someone else's serene grid may mask chaos you can't see.AI, therapy, and the human need to be held in mind: where tools help, and where only a person will do.This is a conversation about refusing to postpone life until after the emails, the crises, or the algorithm say you're done, and choosing to show up, human and imperfect, right now.Love,Sarah Ann

What happens when we swap our desperate (conditioned) grasping for certainty for a curious(ly awkward) embrace of confusion? This episode invites you into a radical reframing of confusion—not as weakness or failure, but as an appropriate, even necessary response to our rapidly changing world. Cultural messaging tells us confusion should be avoided, fixed, overcome. That if we're confused, somehow we're failing life! Abso-f$%king-lutely not.Through personal stories, practical guidance, poetry, and more, let's illuminate how confusion can lead us to clarity, self-trust, and connection when approached more consciously. You'll learn to differentiate between conscious confusion and unconscious rumination, with tools to lovingly disrupt those unconscious loops. Releasing certainty and embracing conscious confusion is a practice to disorient us from the systems designed to keep us good consumers and bad rebels.Learn more about Dana & Leah's Fall Equinox retreat in Joshua Tree!
