Het is alweer bijna drie jaar geleden dat we in de Technoloog uitgebreid spraken over de stand van zaken rond het Internet of Things. Over IOT praten we altijd met Wienke Giezeman, mede-oprichter van The Things Industries, en dat is ook deze aflevering het geval. Sinds ons laatste gesprek is er veel veranderd, bijvoorbeeld de opkomst van generatieve AI. Waar deze technologie drie jaar geleden nog nauwelijks een rol speelde, is het nu niet meer weg te denken uit de wereld van verbonden apparaten. AI maakt het mogelijk om IoT-data sneller te analyseren en directer te benutten, maar brengt ook risico’s met zich mee, zoals grotere afhankelijkheid, complexere beveiligingsvraagstukken en vooral: onbetrouwbare apparatuur. Op het gebied van standaarden blijft Matter het toverwoord. Deze universele taal voor IoT-apparaten werd drie jaar geleden al genoemd, maar heeft sindsdien moeite gehad om echt door te breken. Dat is opmerkelijk, gezien de brede steun van grote partijen als Amazon, Samsung en Ikea. Toch blijft volledige interoperabiliteit uit. Er zijn nog altijd protocollen die hun eigen positie willen behouden, en dat maakt het moeilijk om tot één standaard te komen. Terwijl juist die eenduidigheid de hele markt vooruit zou kunnen helpen. Ook de Europese wetgever roert zich. De EU Data Act, die naar verwachting in september van kracht wordt, verplicht fabrikanten om data uit IoT-apparatuur toegankelijk te maken. Dat biedt kansen voor gebruikers om met eigen software of alternatieve oplossingen aan de slag te gaan, maar leidt mogelijk ook tot fragmentatie. Tegelijkertijd komt er met de Cyber Resilience Act een nieuwe plicht voor fabrikanten: betere standaardbeveiliging van hun producten. Dat klinkt logisch, maar zou in de praktijk botsen met de wens om systemen juist open en modificeerbaar te houden. Zeker bij open-source oplossingen is het de vraag hoe die balans moet worden bewaakt. Ten slotte werpen we een blik op de toekomst. Hoeveel slimmer, efficiënter of duurzamer is het leven met IoT inmiddels echt geworden? Is een 'slim' huis echt zoveel fijner? En waar staan we als we over een aantal jaar opnieuw de balans opmaken? De belangrijkste Europese privacywet liet zich direct al gelden en deed dat deze week zelfs nog, want de Ierse toezichthouder constateerde opnieuw een overtreding van Meta. Boete: 1,2 miljard euro. Wat heeft de AVG ons nu gebracht? En is het machtsspel tussen de Amerikaanse big tech en Europa nog wel houdbaar?  Dat bespreken we met Menno Weij, tech-jurist bij BDO Legal.  Stilletjes rond Matter-protocol Een halfjaar geleden werd smarthomestandaard Matter vol bombarie geïntroduceerd. Vrijwel alle grote techbedrijven waren akkoord met één universeel protocol voor het aansturen van smarthome apparaten. Wat is de impact nu Matter een tijdje onder ons is? Wienke Giezeman is Initiator of The Things Network and CEO of The Things Industries. His work is deeply focused on the LoRa standard for low-power wide-area connectivity. Our discussion explored some of the factors that drove the creation of the LoRa standard, some of the critical use cases that provide proof points for adoption, the critical role of collaboration and alliances in building the ecosystem and some of the early use success stories in the LoRa ecosystem. In particular, Wienke shares the story of connected mousetraps in Amsterdam, connected buildings and connected cows in New Zealand. Some notable startups include Teralytic, a soil health company, myDevices, which has built a layer on top of LoRa and Xignal, the smart mousetrap company.

Het bij elkaar brengen van het geld bleek het makkelijkste van deze onderneming.

Ondernemer Wienke Giezeman zag direct er kansen in. "Internet of Things is een label dat al twintig jaar op producten wordt geplakt", zegt hij.Inmiddels bouwt hij aan een heus open IoT-netwerk, The Things Network. Dat begon in Amsterdam waar in zes weken verschillende bedrijven en 'dingen' met het internet konden communiceren via een routertechniek met de naam LoraWAN™. Het doel is om daarmee uiteindelijk een internationaal netwerk te bouwen."In juli gaan we vierduizend routers verschepen naar duizend mensen over de hele wereld. Het gaat erom dat we uiteindelijk goedkoper data kunnen oogsten." Dat gaat van slimme parkeerplaatsen die je vertellen welke plekken er vrij zijn tot thermometers die meedenken om je huis energiezuinig te houden. "Wij leveren de legoblokken om dat te doen", aldus Giezeman.

Een televisiegids voor de online generatie. Wapzapp ziet zichzelf als concurrent van Netflix. Mede-oprichter Wienke Giezeman leg uit. "We hebben een gratis versie, maar richten ons ook op de betaalde video-on demand-markt."En daarmee denkt het bedrijf in te spelen op een nieuwe generatie televisiekijkers. "We willen geen programma's meer door de strot geduwd krijgen, maar zelf kunnen kiezen", zegt Giezeman. Die generatie wordt bovendien steeds groter. "Meer mensen kijken vaker online televisie", beweren de bouwers van Wapzapp, die onderdeel uitmaken van het groeiprogramma van Rockstart in Amsterdam.Giezeman haalt zijn inkomsten onder meer uit advertenties. Ook  kunnen kijkers abonnementen kopen. "Wij zijn naast Netflix en Giezeman Videoland een van de belangrijkste spelers in deze markt", zegt Giezeman. "Over vijf jaar willen we vijf procent van de markt hebben."Een team van vier mensen zorgt ervoor dat de programmering up to date is."Vooral films en documentaires zijn populair", zegt Giezeman.
