This is Matt Reustle. Today we are breaking down Robinhood. My guest is Arthur Olson, founding partner at Ravenswood Partners. We get into how Robinhood grew from a mobile-native brokerage idea that faced many challenges along the way into the third-largest broker in the USA.  Arthur educates on how the business model has evolved and diversified away from a pure pay-for-order market. We discuss how product velocity is the foundation behind everything in Robinhood's continued penetration and how new talent has made a material difference. Japan rewired its politics: a power shift, a woman at the helm, and a minority government forced to bargain for every vote. What follows when high approval collides with hard math - aging demographics, weak yen, and defense budgets racing past old taboos? Analyst Tobias Harris, author of The Iconoclast and writer of Observing Japan, joins The Jacob Shapiro Podcast to unpack the country's most surprising election in years - one that produced its first female prime minister and a government held together by negotiation. This episode features Rob Toews from Radical Ventures and Ari Morcos, Head of Research at Datology AI, reacting to Andrej Karpathy's recent statement that AGI is at least a decade away and that current AI capabilities are "slop." The discussion explores whether we're in an AI bubble, with both guests pushing back on overly bearish narratives while acknowledging legitimate concerns about hype and excessive CapEx spending. They debate the sustainability of AI scaling, examining whether continued progress will come from massive compute increases or from efficiency gains through better data quality, architectural innovations, and post-training techniques like reinforcement learning. The conversation also tackles which companies truly need frontier models versus those that can succeed with slightly-behind-the-curve alternatives, the surprisingly static landscape of AI application categories (coding, healthcare, and legal remain dominant), and emerging opportunities from brain-computer interfaces to more efficient scaling methods. (0:00) Intro(1:04) Debating the AI Bubble(1:50) Over-Hyping AI: Realities and Misconceptions(3:21) Enterprise AI and Data Center Investments(7:46) Consumer Adoption and Monetization Challenges(8:55) AI in Browsers and the Future of Internet Use(14:37) Deepfakes and Ethical Concerns(26:29) AI's Impact on Job Markets and Training(31:38) Google and Anthropic: Strategic Partnerships(34:51) OpenAI's Strategic Deals and Future Prospects(37:12) The Evolution of Vibe Coding(44:35) AI Outside of San Francisco(48:09) Data Moats in AI Startups(50:38) Comparing AI to the Human Brain(56:07) The Role of Physical Infrastructure in AI(56:55) The Potential of Chinese AI Models(1:03:15) Apple's AI Strategy(1:12:35) The Future of AI Applications With your co-hosts: @jacobeffron - Partner at Redpoint, Former PM Flatiron Health @patrickachase - Partner at Redpoint, Former ML Engineer LinkedIn @ericabrescia - Former COO Github, Founder Bitnami (acq'd by VMWare) @jordan_segall - Partner at Redpoint

My guest today is Dan Wang. Dan is a technology analyst and author who spent six years living in China studying its manufacturing ecosystem and tech development, best known for his new book Breakneck. Dan offers the most nuanced framework I've encountered for understanding US-China competition.  We explore a critical asymmetry: it's far harder for the US to rebuild manufacturing capacity than for China to improve scientific research, with profound implications for AI, national security, and investment returns. For investors, Dan explains the "ByteDance problem"—why exceptional Chinese companies trade at massive discounts due to Communist Party unpredictability and geopolitical risks. He argues China is a "high agency" society that executes relentlessly while America deliberates endlessly, yet also reveals the societal cost. We discuss innovation, state capacity, and investing across both superpowers. Please enjoy my conversation with Dan Wang. Welcome to a compelling conversation on Trending in Education, where we explore how innovative thinking and technology can transform public education. In this episode, Mike Palmer talks with Michelle Vilchez, CEO, and Sean Michael Hardy, Vice President of National Organizing and Advocacy, from Innovate Public Schools. They discuss their groundbreaking work in empowering parents and leveraging artificial intelligence to create a new tool called AI-EP, a project developed in collaboration with Northeastern University's Burnes Center for Social Change. Why You Should Listen: Empowering Parents: This episode highlights how a nonprofit organization is shifting power to parents, particularly those from marginalized communities, by giving them the tools and platforms to advocate for their children's education. AI for Good: You'll hear about a practical and inspiring use of AI that addresses a real-world problem and closes equity gaps, rather than exacerbating them. Community-Led Innovation: The conversation showcases a powerful model of "co-design," where tech developers, educators, and community members work together to create solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Key Takeaways: Innovate Public Schools is a movement, not a network. Michelle and Sean clarify that their organization's mission is to mobilize families to demand high-quality schools for their children, not to operate charter schools. They focus on campaigns for black literacy, special education, and high-impact tutoring. AI-EP addresses a critical need. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is often a dense, 50-page legal document that can be intimidating for parents, especially those who don't speak English or have low reading comprehension. The AI-EP tool translates the IEP into a parent's native language and allows them to ask questions, effectively serving as a chatbot to help them understand and engage with the plan. Collaboration is key to innovation. The AI-EP project was a collaborative effort involving Innovate Public Schools, Northeastern University, and the Learning Tapestry. By bringing together tech developers and parents, they created a tool that has had a transformational impact on users. Parent advocacy drives policy change. Innovate's parent leaders have not only influenced local policy but also co-authored legislation. Their advocacy led to the passage of California's Senate Bill 445, which mandates that IEP documents be translated into the 10 most common languages across the state, benefiting over 800,000 students. The model is replicable. Michelle and Sean stress that their goal is not to be "gatekeepers" of this innovation, but to share the model so it can be replicated across the nation to address a variety of educational challenges. They believe that organizing around education is crucial because it is the "building block" for everything else in life, from economic stability to generational wealth. Don't miss this conversation. Listen in to learn how Innovate Public Schools is harnessing the power of community and technology to create a more equitable and participatory education system. Over the company's 100-year-old history, a lot has changed. While some of the core assets remain the same today, Exor serves as an investment holding company. Its largest and most notable assets include Ferrari, CNH, Stellantis, Philips, and a number of other notable household-name companies.  I am joined by Krishna Mohanraj, a portfolio manager of the International Strategy at Diamond Hill. Today, Exor is led by John Elkann, the grandson of the late Giovanni Agnelli. Elkan was named heir of his grandfather at the age of 21, and has fostered and reshaped the business to what it is today.
