Abstract: Musical training can offset age-related decline of speech perception in noisy environments. However, whether functional compensation or functional preservation the older musicians adopt to counteract the adverse effects of aging is unclear yet, so do older non-musicians. Here, we employed the fundamental brain organization feature named functional lateralization, and calculated network-based lateralization indices (LIs) of resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in 23 older musicians (OM), 23 older non-musicians (ONM), and 24 young non-musicians (YNM). OM outperformed ONM and almost equalized YNM in speech-in-noise/speech tasks. In parallel, ONM exhibited reduced lateralization than YNM in LI of intrahemispheric FC (LI_intra) in cingulo-opercular network (CON) and interhemispheric heterotopic FC (LI_he) in language network (LAN). Moreover, OM showed higher neural alignment to YNM (i.e., similar lateralization pattern) than ONM in LI_intra in CON, LAN, frontoparietal network (FPN) and default mode network (DMN) and LI_he in DMN. These findings suggest that musical training contributes to the preservation of youth-like lateralization in older adults. Furthermore, stronger left-lateralized and lower alignment-to-young of LI_intra in somatomotor network (SMN) and dorsal attention network (DAN) and LI_he in DMN correlated with better speech performance in ONM. In contrast, stronger right-lateralized LI_intra in FPN and DAN and higher alignment-to-young of LI_he in LAN correlated with better performance in OM. Thus, functional preservation and compensation of lateralization may play different roles in speech perception in noise for the elderly with and without musical expertise, respectively. It's safe to say that every Madridista is still riding high after the comeback win over PSG this past Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu. The memories of the night are still fresh and because Real Madrid doesn't play again until Monday, we decided to once again relive the game but also discuss what this big night could mean for Madrid going forward in the UCL. Will this win cause a change in Ancelotti's sometimes stubborn style of coaching and give Valverde and Camavinga more playing time when Los Blancos face teams that like to press high and attack? Will Rodrygo start over Asensio? How are our chances against the more organized, more consistent teams in Europe such as Manchester City, Bayern Munich, or Liverpool? Where else does Real Madrid need to make changes? Even if we get Mbappé, is that enough? There is still a lot left to discuss after the win over PSG and of course still a lot more to celebrate. Sevilla dropped points this weekend as well so Real Madrid is also in a prime position to extend their lead in La Liga even further with a win over Mallorca. Real Madrid have had their fair share of magical nights in European football. The 13-time European Champions feel at home in the Champions League. It's almost as if they feel it's their duty to win it. Every player wearing the royal white jersey seems to somehow be able to conjure up something extra, something intangible, something…MAGIC. They run faster, they fight harder, and simply play as if the likes of Di Stefano, Puskas, and Gento are pushing them along. But even with a long list of past magical European nights…Real Madrid's "remontada" victory over PSG at the Santiago Bernabeu was just as special. A 17-minute hat-trick from Karim Benzema helped Real Madrid overcome a 0-2 deficit and sent PSG crashing out of the Champions League. The reality is that PSG even with its billionaire owners and multi-million dollar star-studded lineup was and is not a team. And last night they crashed face-first into a legendary institution whose players understand how important it is to play as a team and represent their colors. PSG was a group of individuals who are very talented at playing football…but are not a TEAM. They lost against a young and hungry squad that had two LEADERS in Karim Benzema and Luka Modrić pulling the strings. They never gave up, the fans never lost faith, and Real Madrid once again proved why they are 13-time European champions.
