Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake 425 years ago this month. His crime? Radical thinking which clashed with the ideas of the Roman Catholic church. But his extraordinarily colourful life, ideas and tragic fate continue to resonate in our modern understanding of the universe and the ongoing tension between scientific inquiry and religious authority.Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by best-selling author S.J. Parris - pen-name for journalist Stephanie Merritt - who has written a series of novels with Bruno as the main protagonist. Together they delve into the life of a revolutionary and engaging character who took on the church in the 16th century and paid the ultimate price.Presented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. This is 'The Week According To' where we invite a guest to give their thoughts on some of the talking points and headlines from the tabloids and across social media over the past 7 days. This episode, we welcome back our good friend Charlie Sansom to discuss key political issues. We preview the return of his show, "X Uncensored" on X Spaces, focused on free speech and deregulating British media with his initiative "Ofcom Watch." We evaluate London Mayor Sadiq Khan's performance on crime and air quality, addressing government policy implications. Charlie critiques Prime Minister, 'Two Tier' Keir Starmer's proposed smoking bans for their regulatory inconsistencies between tobacco and food. The conversation shifts to free speech concerns, including Mark Zuckerberg's comments on censorship and the legal challenges faced by political dissidents like Tommy Robinson. We also debate identity politics in education and media narratives around race, before concluding with reflections on a Trump campaign ad and the necessity for independent thought in political discourse. PopaHALLics #128 "Four on the Floor"Our podcast is four years old! We celebrate with a funny, more-or-less-true movie about profanity-laced letters, an animated noir Batman, an Alice Hoffman novel about the power of reading, and an influential "sensation" novel first published in 1859-60. Once again, we're on the cutting edge! [Joke.] Streaming:"Wicked Little Letters," streaming services and rental. When residents of a small seaside town begin receiving profanity-laced letters in this black comedy mystery, suspicion falls on a foul-mouthed Irishwoman (Jessie Buckley). But did she do it? Also starring Olivia Coleman and Ajana Vasan."Shardlake," Hulu. In this 4-part series based on C.J. Sansom's novels, a lawyer and his sidekick (Arthur Hughes and Anthony Boyle) investigate, on the orders of Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), a horrific murder at a monastery. "Batman: Caped Crusader," Prime. In this animated throwback noir series, Batman (voiced by Hamish Linklater) is a true detective using low-key methods and his fists to fight crime in Gotham City. More diversity and some interesting spins on Batman's longtime villains. "My Spy," Prime. A hardened CIA agent (Dave Bautista) meets his most challenging adversary yet, a 9-year-old girl (Chloe Coleman), whom he's supposed to be discreetly surveilling. She has other ideas in this cute 2020 action comedy also starring Kristen Schaal and Daniel Kim. "Leave No Trace," Disney+ and rental. In this slow-moving but involving drama from the Oscar-nominated writer and director of "Winter's Bone," a dad (Ben Foster) and his daughter (Thomasin McKenzie) live off the grid in Oregon until one small mistake tips them off to the authorities. Books:"The Invisible Hour," by Alice Hoffman. This novel from the "queen of magical realism" celebrates the power of reading. A copy of "The Scarlet Letter" causes a young girl to question she and her mother's involvement in an oppressive cult. "The Woman in White," by Wilkie Collins. This story originally published in installments in 1859-1860 is often cited in 100-best-novels-of-all-time lists and was one of the first to use multiple narrators to advance the plot. Vivid characters, a mysterious woman in white, true love, scheming upper-crust types, involuntary confinement in an insane asylum—it's all here!

On today's show, Charlie Sansom comments on the results of England's local elections, which have gone unwell for the Conservative Party, and whether that may portend big changes in the upcoming 2024 UK general election. Later, Simon Gold highlights some of his favorite moments from this week's programs on TNT and comments on the elections, the cost of free speech, Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis and more. GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Charlie Sansom is a political commentator who famously quit Conservative Party group Chairmanship on the BBC Essex live over its Covid 19 Plan B and the tyranny that he saw connected to it. Send us a Text Message. This week, I tell the inspiring stories of 6 women who served in the top secret British espionage and sabotage organization, the SOE, during World War II.  In the late 1930s, Hitler's Nazi Germany quickly expanded throughout Europe, grabbing up country after country in its quest for world domination. When France finally fell to the Nazis in 1940, Britain was utterly alone in Europe, a sitting duck. Something had to be done. That something was the SOE and they soon found that women, who were far less suspicious and conspicuous than men, made perfect undercover agents. Happy Monday, Fabulous Listener! Thank you so much for joining us for our weeklong celebration for our brand-new season. It is truly a pleasure bringing you these amazing authors and incredible books each week. We are back on our regular Monday night schedule. This evening we have the pleasure of chatting with the talented and prolific Novelist-Poet, Gume Laurel III. We are discussing his new book, Sansom and Domingo, a verse novel that will captivate you. Gume is a Texan, native to the Rio Grande Valley on the southernmost border. For the past decade, he has dedicated himself to crafting literary works that promote inclusion and showcase diverse characters with intersectional identities. The bulk of Gume's writings are focused on underrepresented groups, especially those from the communities he is a part of: Latin and queer. When he isn't writing, Gume can be found getting lost on a hiking trail with his dogs Blu and Mouse. To learn more about his books and poems, you can find it all on his website at https://gumelaurel.com/. Don't forget, if you are new to the podcast, make sure to subscribe. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, Levels, and Cozy Earth. We often hear the argument that in order to solve climate change we need to stop eating meat, but the truth is that animal agriculture done right is actually part of the solution. On today's episode, I'm excited to talk to Robby Sansom and Taylor Collins about the nuances of regeneratively raised meat and how it can reverse climate change, support better health for those who eat it, and provide natural and caring conditions for the animals it involves. Robby Sansom is Co-Founder & CEO at Force of Nature, a regeneratively sourced meat company based in Austin, TX. Previously, as CFO/COO at EPIC, Robby spent much of the last decade studying regenerative agriculture at ranches all over the world. Force of Nature works in partnership with land stewards, ranchers, and farmers committed to creating a positive return on the planet. Robby is also a land steward at ROAM Ranch, where he owns regeneratively managed bison.Taylor Collins is the Chief Bison Wrangler and a Co-founder of Force of Nature. In 2017, Taylor and his family purchased ROAM Ranch, a 900-acre multi-species regenerative ecosystem. Within 5 years of management, the ranch has seen dramatic improvements in soil carbon, water infiltration, plant diversity, and soil health.
