On this episode of the Business Over Beer podcast, we have part 2 of our interview with Cathy Baillargeon, Founder and CEO of Virtual Cathy, a company providing remote administrative support for business owners and non-profits. After a very spirited Angie's Mystery Beer segment, in which Ben's lovely wife Angela, once again pulled some next level psychic voodoo with her beer selection, we discuss the lonely road of Entrepreneurship, the psychology of Small Business Owners, and how Cathy has built a culture around caring and companionship for her clients. At the heart of her business, she is helping small business owners unwind many of the misconceptions about what entrepreneurship traditionally has been, resulting in a happier and healthier life for the small business owner, and a healthier, more profitable business. Prost! How to Make the Lonely Road of Entrepreneurship Less Lonely For many of us, we were taught from an early age, that working longer was the same as working harder. This is a misconception, that in today's culture, we need to unwind in order to help the mental health and wellness for, not only entrepreneurs and small business owners, but for our broader workforce. Many entrepreneurs, specifically solopreneurs, have a mindset around their work that "if I CAN do, I should do it", and "what would it say about me as business owner if I gave up these tasks." There's an inherent fear that letting go of certain things means it's not theirs anymore. But that doesn't have to be the case. Any small business owner doesn't have to prove that they can do data entry. They do not have to justify giving up tasks that they are not good at or that they simply don't want to do. The road of entrepreneurship can be lonely enough without trying to convince yourself that if you aren't working 18 hour days, that somehow you are less than. The Covid-19 pandemic allowed small business owners to step back and take a break that allowed them to see what was truly important in life. In this new remote workplace culture and the gig economy, and getting support from services like Virtual Cathy, a business owner's life can look much different. A business can still grow without the business owner having to work 24/7, allowing them to be better wives, husbands, mothers and fathers...and better business owners. Angie's Mystery Beer: Sasquatch Brewing Co. - Portland, OR Free Couch, Hazy IPA, 7.1% ABV This craft beer is "made with Simcoe hops and double dry hopped with Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic hops. This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only The Sasquatch Hunters, we welcome back esteemed Business Over Beer alumni, Bill Cohen of Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants, and Joey Yourchek of Elfin Services. Bill provides support to family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia and Elfin Services is a professional caregiving service offering, among other things, in home care to patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Alzheimer's Disease remains a top 5 cause of death in the United States with no cure and no treatment, and mental health is becoming an increasingly more important issue for our overall health and wellness, especially in the time of COVID-19. Our goal is to increase awareness of the seriousness of Alzheimer's and Dementia and to keep mental health at the the forefront of health and wellness conversations. But we still manage to have a good time, even talking about heavy topics like this, and with Bill and Joey, it's hard not to have a good time. Business Over Beer will be donating a portion of our October Patreon proceeds to help fight Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Prost! In this episode: Joey Started working with seniors as a fiduciary for a bank, where he enjoyed the relationships with Seniors before landing at Elfin Services as Business Administrator After being the primary caregiver for his mom while she battled Alzheimer's, Bill started a post retirement career, providing resources for family caregivers to help reduce their stress, coordinate with the healthcare and other service providers, and assist with self care, a resource that did not exist when he was in position of caregiving. 2 out of 3 are women who suffer from dementia. There are still no real definitive answers as to who and why people get dementia. As with many other health issues, lifestyle factors are the best preventative medicine for Dementia; gut health and heart health are good for brain health. Keeping an active brain throughout life can also be beneficial in prevention or in delaying the onset of Dementia, things like taking up a language, learning an instrument, and doing puzzles. One theory about what causes Dementia is that people who overuse their brain power could that be a contributing factor. If you've seen one case of dementia, you've seen one case of dementia. Every case is unique. Guest Beers: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Golden Hammer Organic Lager, 4.8% ABV, 25 IBU "Organic NW and German ingredients come together for a new take on Germany’s most popular beer: the Munich-style Helles. This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only the Sasquatch Hunters, we celebrate our 1 Year Anniversary, recorded at Hopworks Urban Brewery, the Birthplace of The BOB, with Founder and Head Brewmaster, Christian Ettinger. Christian has been brewing beer for over 25 years and first experienced the brewpub as the center of the community while living abroad in Cologne Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., as the craft beer scene was exploding here in the Pacific Northwest, Christian knew by the age of 19 that he wanted to start this business. Combining the European style brewpub experience with the more modern craft brewing approach, Hopworks Urban Brewery opened in Portland, OR in 2007. We already knew going into this episode that we loved Hopworks, and we were pleasantly surprised that Christian shares our love of quoting Seinfeld and movies, hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording. Prost! In this episode: People have been gathering around beer for the last 9000 years since the ice age receded. The plural of Sasquatch is Sasquaii, the second "i" is silent. Company culture starts with the founder and the things you stand for, and then build a team that is like minded and thoughtful. A camel is a horse designed by committee B Corp provides a way to benchmark themselves and focus on local neighborhoods and environmental groups and to be profitable in a meaningful way, as well as spotlight areas where more work needs to be done. The pandemic is a shared experience for all small businesses, but you have to get scrappy, be resourceful, surround yourself with great people, and really get back to basics. Getting lean is about getting rid of dead weight and focusing on what can you reasonably accomplish yourself and what you need help with. Both are ok, but don't ever be all in one pot. Guest Beers: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% abv, 65 IBU "Abominable is a perfect blend of caramel malts and Simcoe, Azacca, and Centennial hops, creating a complex, spicy, and citrusy winter ale." Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Fresh Hop Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% ABV, 65 IBU "You've never tasted Abominable like this before! Fresh Hop Abominable stays true to its namesake with fresh Centennial hops that add juicy notes of pine for a perfect PNW fresh hop ale." Angie's Mystery Beer: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Fresh Hop Ace of Spades, Imperial IPA, 8.6 ABV, 100 IBU "This fresh hop beast is hopped out with Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops to balance beautiful citrus notes, a dank fresh Strata hop addition, and a clean malt bitterness." In addition to the amazing spread of Samuel Smith Beers and freshly baked beer cupcakes (yep you read that right!), Tracie shares with us why she is so driven to succeed as a mom, a wife and businesswoman. Guest Beer: Samuel Smith Brewery, North Yorkshire, UK Organic Raspberry Fruit Beer, 5.1% ABV "Handcrafted at the tiny All Saints Brewery set in a time warp in Stamford using the old manually operated brewing equipment. Finest organically grown barley and wheat are used to create a complex ale which, having undergone primary and secondary fermentation with different yeasts and extended maturation, is taken to Samuel Smith’s small, independent British brewery at Tadcaster. There it is blended with pure organic cherry, strawberry, raspberry or apricot fruit juices and more organic beer to create fruit beers of considerable strength and flavour. The smooth distinctive character of the matured beer serves as the perfect counterpoint to the pure organic fruit juice." Organic Chocolate Stout, 5% ABV Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and organic cocoa impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish – this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate. This is Market the Brew’s covert, cloak and dagger, Mystery Shopper episode. Our gest is “Sandi” – which isn’t our guest’s real name. Sandi is the taproom manager at a brewery that can accommodate around 400 people and is projected to produce between 16-18,000 barrels this year.
