Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

In this week's parasha , Hashem tells Moshe צו את אהרון ואת בניו לאמר, and Rashi writes, אין צו אלא לשון זירוז. Moshe was told by Hashem to inspire and encourage the Kohanim regarding their work with the korban olah . Rabbi Reuven Elbaz in his sefer Moshcheni Acharecha writes that in life Hashem gives everybody moments of encouragement and inspiration, and it is the job of man to grab those moments and use them to elevate himself spiritually and get closer to Hashem. Rav Yechezkel Levenstein the great mashgiach of Ponevezh who has inspired tens of thousands of people with his sefarim entitled Ohr Yechezkel once told a student of his that he attributed all of his spiritual gains to one moment of inspiration which he grabbed and kept with him for the rest of his life. It was during a speech that he heard from the great Mashgiach from Mir, Reb Yerucham Levovitz. In that speech, he learned what it means to feel Hashem's presence at all times and see Him in everything that he does and encounters. Everybody experiences hashgachat Hashem in their own lives. Sometimes they are able to see it more than others. One of the reasons Hashem allows us to see His hand clearly at those times is because He is giving us moments of inspiration. The wise man captures the moment and etches it in his brain for life, utilizing it to get closer to Hashem. And then, even during the trying moments when his resolve is being tested, he doesn't budge from his emunah because he knows Hashem is with him. Rabbi Elbaz gave a parable to crystallize the point. If a man was lost and found himself in a dark forest with wild animals lurking, the darkness being so thick he could barely see a foot in front of him. He has no idea how to escape, but he knows he has to do it quickly before he is caught by an animal. Then, all of a sudden, a bolt of lightning flashes. The entire forest lights up. The smart man will make it a point to capture that image and then use it to navigate his way out of there. So too it is in life. Hashem gives everyone moments of clarity. It is up to us to utilize them to help ourselves navigate through life properly. Everyone experiences hashgacha pratit . It doesn't necessarily have to be with big things. But when those moments happen, Hashem is talking to us. Sometimes they're more clear than others. Dr. Meir Wikler told a story about a man, Meyer Isakov, and his wife who lived in Har Nof. They both had the most wonderful middot and their home was always open to taking guests in. Although they didn't have so much money, they managed to always care for the people who came through their doors. A baal teshuva named Zev Eisner became inspired at Aish HaTorah and left his secular life in California to learn in that yeshiva in Israel. He was very shy and never found peace when going to other people's homes for meals, until he met Meyer and his wife. He felt so comfortable there, he made them his go-to home. The one Shabbat a month he left yeshiva, he would always go eat by them. Baruch Hashem, after nine long years, Meyer and his wife were blessed with their first child. Their joy knew no bounds. Eventually, they moved the baby into a crib in the other room in their apartment. It was a few weeks before Sukkot and Zev was eating over them for Shabbat. Before he left, he asked if he could stay by them for the entire holiday of Sukkot as his yeshiva was going to be closed. "Of course," they answered immediately, even though there was no room in the apartment for him to sleep. Since they were going to sleep in the sukkah anyway, it wouldn't be a problem. The only problem was they didn't have any extra mattresses for him to sleep on and they couldn't really afford to buy one either. They were hoping over the next couple of weeks they would be able to borrow one. However, as Yom Tov approached, they had not been successful in finding one. Meyer gave his wife chizuk saying, not to worry, they were doing ratzon Hashem and he was sure Hashem would help. His wife told him, "I wish I had your bitachon . You know, this mattress is not the only thing we need. Our baby is getting bigger and soon he is going to need a highchair." "I wish I could afford one," replied Meyer. "But you know how impossible it is for us to afford something that expensive now. We could still manage without it and when we really need it, Hashem will provide it." The next day was Erev Sukkot. Even Meyer felt his emunah being tested. He still had no bed for Zev who would be arriving in a few hours. Two hours later, the bell rang. It was Shia who lived down the block. He needed a favor, he also had a new baby in the house and a lot of guests coming over. He needed to make room for them. He said there were a couple of things he wasn't going to need for a while, but he didn't want to sell them. So he was wondering if Meyer had any storage space for them. "What were they?" A folding bed and a highchair. The hashgacha of Hashem was amazing – sending them exactly what they needed at the exact moment they needed it. For Meyer and his wife, that was a moment of clarity, a clear indication Hashem was with them, a moment they would never forget. If we use the moments of inspiration Hashem gives us, we'll be able to grow and become the people we're meant to become. Shabbat Shalom.

Support the show

Tzav |  What is Torat Ha-Olah? by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Why doesn't the opening section of Parashat Tzav actually talk about the korban ha-olah - even though it's titled zot torat ha-olah? The first seven chapters of Vayikra are devoted to detailed instructions regarding the various קרבנות; the first five, which make up פרשת ויקרא, present nearly all of the offerings from the perspective of the donor, whereas the next two, which make up over half of פרשת צו, address the same range of קרבנות from the vantage point of the כהנים - the officiants. The opening פרשה in צו is titled "תורת העולה" yet it doesn't provide any further details about the קרבן העולה - but the subsequent פרשות all do present numerous details about the מנחה, about the חטאת etc. We explore the unique role of the קרבן עולה and its vital role in the ongoing sanctification of the altar as well as the continuous presence of השם in the משכן. Parashat Sav presents some of the laws relevant to the various categories of Korbanot (sacrifices). One of the sacrifices which were offered in the Bet Ha'mikdash was the Asham (guilt-offering). Unlike the Hatat (sin-offering), which was required after certain inadvertent violations, the Asham was brought after the intentional transgression of certain commands. The Torah says about the Asham, “Bi'mkom Asher Yish'hatu Et Ha'ola Yish'hatu Et Ha'asham” – it was slaughtered in the same area in the courtyard of the Bet Ha'mikdash as the voluntary Ola sacrifice (7:2). Rav Moshe Alshich (Safed, 1508-1593) explains the significance of this Halachic detail. He notes the earlier sources establishing that a person would bring a Korban Ola to atone for Hirhureh Abera (sinful thoughts), and for violations of a Misvat Aseh (affirmative command). When a person is guilty of sinful thoughts, Rav Moshe Alshich writes, he achieves atonement by doing just the opposite – by having thoughts of repentance and of love for Hashem. And with regard to violating a Misvat Aseh, the Rambam writes explicitly in Hilchot Teshuba that complete atonement is attained for such violations immediately upon repenting. These violations are less severe than the violation of a Misvat Lo Ta'aseh (Torah prohibitions), and thus the process of repentance is completed immediately once the violator repents. Clearly, then, if a person guilty of these wrongs goes even further, and offers a sacrifice, his atonement is perfect and complete. By commanding that the Asham be sacrificed in the same location as the Ola, the Torah conveys the powerful message that one who performs Teshuba for a grave, intentional transgression reaches the same “place” as someone who repents for minor transgressions. The Ola, which is offered in cases of relatively minor misdeeds which are easily atoned for, is slaughtered in the same location as the Asham, which is brought in cases of severe, willful violations – to teach us that repentance is equally effective in both instances. We mustn't think that forgiveness and atonement are attainable only for sins of lesser severity, or for unintentional wrongs, but not for grave mistakes and serious breaches of Torah law. The Torah emphasizes that repentance brings a person bringing an Asham to the same place as a person who brings an Ola. As long as the sinner's Teshuba is sincere and heartfelt, his repentance is lovingly accepted. In fact, the Sages famously teach that “the place where penitent sinners stand – even the perfectly righteous cannot stand there.” Nobody should ever feel forever trapped by the mistakes of his past. Teshuba works, and brings a person complete atonement, regardless of the severity of the sin which he committed. This must be our perspective on our own failings, as well as those of other people. We should never judge people because of things they said or did in the past. Even if someone had made grave mistakes, we are to follow G-d's example of mercy, compassion and forgiveness, and recognize the power of Teshuba. If the person sincerely regrets his mistake and seeks to improve, he deserves our respect and admiration, and must not be forever defined by his past sins.

Leviticus Chapter 6 1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Command Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law of the burnt-offering: it is that which goeth up on its firewood upon the altar all night unto the morning; and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning thereby. 3 And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh; and he shall take up the ashes whereto the fire hath consumed the burnt-offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. 4 And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place. 5 And the fire upon the altar shall be kept burning thereby, it shall not go out; and the priest shall kindle wood on it every morning; and he shall lay the burnt-offering in order upon it, and shall make smoke thereon the fat of the peace-offerings. 6 Fire shall be kept burning upon the altar continually; it shall not go out. {S} 7 And this is the law of the meal-offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, in front of the altar. 8 And he shall take up therefrom his handful, of the fine flour of the meal-offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meal-offering, and shall make the memorial-part thereof smoke upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the LORD. 9 And that which is left thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat; it shall be eaten without leaven in a holy place; in the court of the tent of meeting they shall eat it. 10 It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of My offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as the sin-offering, and as the guilt-offering. 11 Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as a due for ever throughout your generations, from the offerings of the LORD made by fire; whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. {P} 12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 13 This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed: the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering perpetually, half of it in the morning, and half thereof in the evening. 14 On a griddle it shall be made with oil; when it is soaked, thou shalt bring it in; in broken pieces shalt thou offer the meal-offering for a sweet savour unto the LORD. 15 And the anointed priest that shall be in his stead from among his sons shall offer it, it is a due for ever; it shall be wholly made to smoke unto the LORD. 16 And every meal-offering of the priest shall be wholly made to smoke; it shall not be eaten.

On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah

Jewish wisdom says a child’s Torah education should start with the Book of Leviticus. As we read its second portion, Parashat Tzav, we share an episode that first ran in 2018, just after a school shooting in Parkland, FL, killed 17 people and injured 17 more. Rabbi Rick Jacobs stresses the importance of fighting for and with our young people, raising up the Jewish teens who, amid tragedy, mobilized for gun violence prevention.

In 1 Corinthians Paul tells us that an unbelieving spouse can be made holy through their relationship to a believing spouse. How does this work? Parashat Tzav helps us to understand how a transfer of holiness such as this can take place between objects, but how does Paul make this connection between individuals and is this principle still applicable today? Learn more in the 5 Minute Torah commentary on Parshat Tzav (Leviticus 6:1-8:36).

Both Parashat Vayikra and Parashat Tzav speak at length about each of the five categories of sacrifices. What is the relationship between these two sets of chapters? Why are some laws included in one unit, others in the second, and yet others in both? Why is there a need for two distinct discussions at all; could not the Torah have combined all the laws into one unit? This Torahcast, brought to you by ALHATORAH.ORG, featuring Neima Novetsky, explores these questions and more. On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah

This week's Torah portion, Parashat Tzav, is read around Purim, a story of mythic (and even improbable) proportions that remains enduringly relevant to Jewish Diaspora life and anti-Jewish persecution throughout the centuries. Rabbi Rick Jacobs talks about how sometimes, just like Esther, we are called upon to make risky, dangerous, and courageous choices.

In Parashat Tzav we learn that the holy altar had three fires that burned upon it continually. What does it mean that the fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually? If this is a continual, eternal commandment, how do we do this in a time when the Temple is not standing? Find out more in the 5 Minute Torah commentary on Parshat Tzav (Leviticus 6:1[8]-8:36)

On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah

Parashat Tzav is the second portion in the Book of Leviticus, and it’s said in the midrash that a child’s Torah education should start with Leviticus. So, while we read a book that is for our youngest leaders, let us follow our youngest leaders: those who are fighting against gun violence. In this episode of On the Other Hand, Rabbi Jacobs stresses the importance of fighting alongside, and for, our children.

On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah

Parashat Tzav opens with a command to Aaron, the high priest. It’s a moment to think about leadership – who are our leaders and what do they do? Are our leaders born into the role, like Aaron, or are they called to leadership, like Moses? Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, discusses what it means to be a leader, and who among us should take a leadership role (spoiler alert: it’s all of us!)
