I'm reading and talking about Ted Gioia's "Immersive Humanities Course," 52 weeks of World Classics. An interesting combination this week. Ted Gioia, the creator of my reading list, called it “Love and War,” but it felt like a lot more than that. And last week, I called it a hodgepodge, but I can admit I was wrong.Plato's Symposium is the third of Plato's works on this list. After wrestling with Ethics in particular last week, I was happy to get back to my friend. Symposium is written as a dialogue among friends, recalled by one who wasn't there, a little like the game of “Telephone” we'e all played. The friends' topic? Love, specifically eros. Given that this is upper-class Ancient Greece, there is a significant discussion of love between men; honestly romantic love between men and women is practically ignored. The reading plan only covered a few portion of Herodotus' Histories, Books 1 and 6-8. For full disclosure, I did NOT complete the reading but stopped with Book 7. In my edition of Histories the assigned books were more than 350 pages and I simply ran out of time. If I had done all the reading this week I would have been around 430 pages! Given that I “signed up” for about 250 pages per week, I had to stop. Confession time over.As always, I have so many, many thoughts about these works. For Symposium, I summarized each person's eulogy as a way to get my hands around the text. A few ideas:Obviously Love held an important place in the lives of Greeks. This entire dialogue is centered around it, but it doesn't look like love in many ways. I'm accustomed to thinking of love as wanting and being willing to work for the best of your beloved, and that being mutual. That desiring “for” someone else, rather than merely desiring them, was absent at least as far as I could see. There are a number of points made about Love as the dialogue progresses, and they definitely don't agree. As always, you're left to parse out the better and worse arguments. “You complete me” (yes, Jerry Maguire) makes an appearance! That attitude has been around a looooong time. Aristophanes tells a long and pretty funny tale about how human beings were at one time two-headed, eight-limbed creatures, but when Zeus got mad and split everyone in two. Now we go around looking for our other half.Does Love motivate us to honor? What kind of Love would do that? Or maybe Love is a moderating force? (I found that a weak argument.) Is its purpose beauty? Those are all offered as arguments, and all are rejected by Socrates. Socrates, via his mentor Diotima, argues that Love's purpose is procreation. As someone who has actually been pregnant several times, I found Socrates' discussion of pregnancy to be uncomfortable, to say the least. There is a ton of homoerotic talk, especially from Socrates and Alcibiades. It is just so strange to me that there is virtually no discussion of love between men and women, but tons between older and younger men. As usual, my bias shows, but it's who I am.On to Herodotus. He's been on my radar since I read History of the Ancient World by Susan Wise Bauer about a year and a half ago, and seeing him on the reading list was part of my motivation to jump in. He did not disappoint. The sections that I read were the origin stories of Croesus and Cyrus, and Persia, and then the beginning of the Persian War. I ended with the Battle of Thermopylae, which is an amazing story in its own right. A few takeaways:Every military leader should read this book. I may actually send it to my son who is in the Navy! There are examples of excellent leadership, and cranky...
This week on MYTH, we're returning to the dawn of time for a tale from the very first city. You'll learn that you shouldn't trust a bad gardener, that cities make great hiding places, and that turning the seas to blood is a favorite pastime of pissed off deities. Then, in Gods and Monsters, the god of pestilence is going to risk a zombie apocalypse for a one night stand. Source: Mesopotamian Mythology
Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy have seven movies to talk about this week. In this episode, we perceive dynamic scenes from a bull taming arena, as portrayed in Sangam Literary work, Kalithogai 103, penned by Chozhan Nalluruthiran. The verse is situated in the 'Mullai' or 'Forest Landscape' and relays the importance accorded to courage and determination in an ancient culture.
The sin of one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. Yes, Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Romans 5:17-18 NLTChristmas is the story of God's relentless love and the war He won to give us victory over sin and death. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 3:23 ESVJesus personally and willingly went to war to defeat death, hell and the grave for all who would believe. Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from east arrived in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote: ‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.'” Matthew 2:1-6 NLTAfter this meeting the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. Matthew 2:9-12 NLT Spiritual insight is a gift not to be overlooked in our battle with sin and death. Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men's report of the star's first appearance. Herod's brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: “A cry was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted, for they are dead.” Matthew 2:16-18 NLTBecause God's children are human beings made of flesh and blood, the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. Hebrews 2:14-15 NLT Jesus victory over sin and satan means that for the believer, death is no longer a guilty man's sentence, but a forgiven man's segue into life eternal. “O death, where is your victory? Where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 ESV The hope we have in Jesus is not only the truth we carry, but ironically it's the truth that carries us.

Robert Gatenby had just married his wife of 56 years, Diane, when his draft notice arrived. During his service in Vietnam, Bob experienced the darkest moments war can bring. To protect his wife and parents, however, Bob's steady stream of letters home never let on to the danger he faced. This is a story of how war changes those who fight, and how love can conquer all.

Ancient history has traditionally been dominated by the lives of great men, while ancient women are confined to the margins or omitted altogether. In The Missing Thread, award-winning classicist Dr Daisy Dunn pulls these women out of the shadows and puts them center stage, where they belong. This week, we talk about the lives of ancient women: love, marriage, extra-marital relationships, divorce, sex, contraception, same-sex relationships, and even dildos made of bread?! We also talk about women leading armies, ruling nations, and the very first woman to win at the Olympics, long before women were even allowed to compete. Daisy's book is The Missing Thread: A Women's History of the Ancient World, and it's out in the US on July 30th from Viking. [Listen notes for further reading: the women mentioned include poet Sappho, Messalina, the goddess Ishtar, Clytemnestra (wife of Agamemnon), Cornelia (wife of Tiberius Gracchus), orator Aspasia, Olympic victor Cynisca, Tomyris, Pharaoh Hatshepsut, and Artemisia of Halicarnassus] Daisy can be found at daisydunn.co.uk.
The Prism of America's Education with Host Karen Schoen – Dictators disregard morality and truth, eliminating opposition to control power. Despite their efforts, truth prevails, and freedom endures. The globalist agenda, exemplified by European policies like the Digital Services Act, threatens individual liberties. In America, we must vote and stay vigilant to preserve our freedoms and prevent the spread of oppressive ideologies.

In Love and War: Collective Memory and the Self is our fifth conversation in a series centering the Warscapes anthology Insurgent Feminisms: Writing War (Daraja Press). Featuring Samina Najmi, Ubah Cristina Ali Farah, Beverly Parayno and Veruska Cantelli.Writing about war is often synonymous with writing about memory. Erasing narratives, stories and collective memory is the explicit agenda and the inevitable outcome of any war. And thus, writers counter, resist and seize back memory and along the way, shape the historical accounts of places and people that have experienced violence and trauma. The discussion explores the task of writers retrieving memories from war but through the double focus on gender and colonial pasts. They ask: what is the role of the imagination in writing against forgetfulness? How does form, style and aesthetics enter into the writing of trauma and violence? Where does imagination take you within the memory frame of your stories? How can imagination be a place to resist annihilation, how can imagination be a tool for liberation?Samina Najmi teaches multiethnic U.S. literatures at California State University, Fresno. A scholar of race, gender, and war in U.S. literature, she has edited or coedited four volumes and authored critical essays on works by Naomi Shihab Nye, Brian Turner, and Nora Okja Keller that consider their engagement with war from a feminist perspective. Her article, “Narrating War: Arab and Muslim American Aesthetics,” appears in the Cambridge History of Asian American Literature (2016). Samina has also published over thirty creative nonfiction essays, which often meld memoir with political commentary. These essays appear in Warscapes, The Margins, Asian American Literary Review, and elsewhere. Her memoir “One Summer in Gaza” was reprinted recently in Doubleback Review, and her essay on Aaron Bushnell's self-immolation is forthcoming in The Markaz Review. Samina spent her childhood in England and grew up in Pakistan.Ubah Cristina Ali Farah was born in Verona to a Somali father and an Italian mother. This week Mike, Rich and Steve check out three new releases: SILENCE OF THE PREY (The Horror Collective) mixes a bit of folk horror and uncomfortable right wing politics a la Get Out... THE LAST KUMITE (Altitude Film Distribution) brings together a stellar DTV cast for a love letter to tournament movies gone by... BREATHE (Signature Entertainment) also brings together a great cast in what is also a familiar tale... Our Short Shot is MR AND MRS SMITH: LOVE AND WAR - this is made by Big Films, who made one of my all-time favourite shorts, Warlike. Check out the whole film by clicking the link, and explore some of their other work while you are there! In honour of the late, great Roger Corman, our DTV Throwback is THE FANTASTIC FOUR - this is a film shrouded in urban legend (check out our review where Rich has to correct me on getting the details wrong) - a film which was basically made purely to allow someone to retain the rights, and never officially released! So, let's pretend the last five months didn't happen (god, how I wish that were true...), and that this episode went up directly after the last :). Anyway, I'm back with an episode that is sort of a shout out to the origins of this podcast: Ancient Myths! Specifically Mesopotamia. I really do love this era, and it's sort of like the origins of all modern cultural lore. Today we're talking about the Wonder Woman of ancient history: Ishtar. She was the goddess of love, but also war! How cool is that. She's both a lover and a fighter, which is super badass. Anyway, listen to the episode for all the goodies! In this very special episode, we hear the fascinating firsthand account of Benaya Cherlow, an IDF reservist who was working on Capital Hill on October 7th. He immediately travelled back to Israel, where he fought first on the Lebanon border and then in Gaza. His story is one of love, pain, heroism, and healing, and provides a perspective on the war through the lens of someone that experienced it firsthand. After returning from Gaza, Benaya organized a delegation to meet with members of congress to bridge the gap between American and Israeli politics. We discuss his work on this episode as well. --- Please rate and review the Empowered Jewish Living podcast on whatever platform you stream it. In the brokenness of our times, how might questioning our performance of love tickle pathways for new worlds to open? What fresh forms of connections can blossom when we collapse the hierarchy of loving into a mycelial network of loving? How might the steady cultivation of our individuated lexicon of love strengthen communal bonds? This is a devotional episode dedicated to the Empress of the Solar System, Beloved Venus, through the lens of their journey in Aquarius. To celebrate the last week of Venus's current transit in Aquarius (ps we have not one but TWO trips of Venus moving through Aquarius), I'm recording a contemplation of Venus's journey through the land of fixed air. Join me for my guest workshop inspired by Venus in Aquarius, VISIONARY OF LOVE, hosted by the incredible Kelsey Rose Tortorice. Read more about it here. The workshop is on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 4-6 PM EST / 1-3 PM PST. If you can't make it live, replay will be available! In this contemplation, I discussed the idea of harmonizing everyday personal acts of love with the Field of Love, war as a product of distorted love, rooting beauty standards in the vulnerability of True Love, and Love as the bedfellow of Mystery. Between 1942 and 1945 more than two million servicemen occupied the southern Pacific theater, the majority of whom were Americans in service with the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. During the occupation, American servicemen married approximately 1,800 women from New Zealand and the island Pacific, creating legal bonds through marriage and through children. Additionally, American servicemen fathered an estimated four thousand nonmarital children with Indigenous women in the South Pacific Command Area. In Of Love and War: Pacific Brides of World War II (University of Nebraska Press, 2023) Dr. Angela Wanhalla details the intimate relationships forged during wartime between women and U.S. servicemen stationed in the South Pacific, traces the fate of wartime marriages, and addresses consequences for the women and children left behind. Paying particular attention to the experiences of women in New Zealand and in the island Pacific—including Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, and the Cook Islands—Of Love and War aims to illuminate the impact of global war on these women, their families, and Pacific societies. Dr. Wanhalla argues that Pacific war brides are an important though largely neglected cohort whose experiences of U.S. military occupation expand our understanding of global war. By examining the effects of American law on the marital opportunities of couples, their ability to reunite in the immediate postwar years, and the citizenship status of any children born of wartime relationships, Dr. Wanhalla makes a significant contribution to a flourishing scholarship concerned with the intersections between race, gender, sexuality, and militarization in the World War II era. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. We all want our lives to make a difference. We want our story to have an impact on others, but often we're not sure how to do this. But when we live an interactive life with God, He will send us out to share His Kingdom with others. We need to see our stories as being one about us joining God in His mission to draw people into His Kingdom. In order to do this we need to be constantly aware of what God is up to in the world around us. We need to have eyes to see, ears to hear, and hands ready to give. This is how we disciples of Jesus fight the spiritual battle with His approved weapon of love.

Belisarius and Antonina were titans in the Roman world some 1,500 years ago. Belisarius was the most well-known general of his age, victor over the Persians, conqueror of the Vandals and the Goths, and as if this were not enough, wealthy beyond imagination. His wife, Antonina, was an impressive person in her own right. She made a name for herself by traveling with Belisarius on his military campaigns, deposing a pope, and scheming to disgrace important Roman officials. Together, the pair were extremely influential, and arguably wielded more power in the late Roman world than anyone except the emperor Justinian and empress Theodora themselves. This unadulterated power and wealth did not mean that Belisarius and Antonina were universally successful in all that they undertook. They occasionally stumbled militarily, politically, and personally - in their marriage and with their children. These failures knock them from their lofty perch, humanize them, and make them even more relatable and intriguing to us today. Belisarius & Antonina: Love and War in the Age of Justinian (Oxford UP, 2023) is the first modern portrait of this unique partnership. They were not merely husband and wife but also partners in power. This is a paradigm which might seem strange to us, as we reflexively imagine that marriages in the ancient world were staunchly traditional, relegating wives to the domestic sphere only. But Antonina was not a reserved housewife, and Belisarius showed no desire for Antonina to remain in the home. Their private and public lives blended as they traveled together, sometimes bringing their children, and worked side-by-side. Theirs was without a doubt the most important nonroyal marriage of the late Roman world, and one of the very few from all of antiquity that speaks directly to contemporary readers. Dr. David Alan Parnell is an Associate Professor of History at Indiana University Northwest. He is the author of Justinian's Men (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and has worked on numerous articles about the military and social life of the sixth-century Roman Empire. He is also a consultant, recently working on Epic History TV's documentary series on Belisarius. Evan Zarkadas (MA) is an independent scholar of European and Medieval history and an educator. He received his master's in history from the University of Maine focusing on Medieval Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, medieval identity, and ethnicity during the late Middle Ages.
