Tommy Nicol died a self-inflicted death in prison whilst on an indeterminate prison sentence (IPP).Tommy's sister Donna Mooney has been at the forefront of campaigning for change and challenging the harmful consequences of the IPP sentence, which was abolished back in 2012.Lucy and Lee speak to Donna about her fight and how accountability for Tommy's death can only come when all those still serving IPP sentences are resentenced and finally have a release date in sight.Unlawful Killing is made in partnership with INQUEST and Aunt Nell. Connor Sparrowhawk was a funny 18-year-old who loved London buses. He was autistic and had epilepsy and learning disabilities. He died after drowning in a bath at an NHS care unit whilst the staff meant to be looking after him were doing a Tesco order. Lucy and Lee speak to Connor's mum, Sara Ryan, about who Connor was and her family's longstanding campaign for justice, within and beyond the law. Lee and Sara draw parallels between their experiences of caring for their loved ones in life, continuing that care in death through campaigning and finding strength in the communities that rose up to support them. In the forty years since INQUEST was founded by families bereaved by deaths in police and prison custody, the ways in which these deaths are investigated has changed significantly. These changes were fought for by bereaved families, their lawyers, activists and organisations like INQUEST.Yet despite these changes, people continue to die preventable deaths at the hands of the state. In this episode, Lucy and Lee delve back into our archive to look at what's changed, how the state continues to defend itself, and why bereaved families are still having to fight for the truth.Unlawful Killing is made in partnership with INQUEST and Aunt Nell. When a member of the public dies in suspicious circumstances, there's a criminal investigation. But what happens when it's the state that's the suspect? Lucy and Lee are back and this time, they're looking at what happens after someone has died at the hands of the state and how families are often left in the dark fighting for answers. Shot in 1985 by police in Brixton, Cherry Groce died 26 years later. In 2011, an inquest found that Cherry died as a result of the bullet lodged in her spine. Lee tells us what happened after his mum's death, the inquest process and his families' long journey to the truth. Unlawful Killing is made in partnership with INQUEST and Aunt Nell. Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations - "Blood Ah Go Run (feat. Wesley Joseph & ESKA)" from the 2023 album I Came From Love on Transgressive. Mercury Prize-nominated artist Dave Okumu returns with his new project, Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations, a name he says honors "my actual ancestors, the ancestors of others, my musical ancestors, and my descendants." Their debut album, I Came From Love, will be released April 14th via Transgressive Records. In a press statement, the UK-based guitarist/producer explains, "the narrative of this record emerged in tandem with the origin of its musical journey, through a rumination on survival, ancestry and heritage. The account of the young west African girl who was transported to South Carolina in 1756 and sold to the slave owner Elias Ball and the subsequent unearthing and presentation of her story to her descendants became an emblematic framework for these songs, opening doors to many aspects of the diasporic experience. The music stands in loving defiance of any forces that would seek to disconnect us from our collective history. As I consciously stand before my ancestors through the medium of this sound world, I proclaim that ‘You survived so I might live.'” On today's Song of the Day, in particular, he reflects on the New Cross house fire in 1981 that killed 13 Black teenagers in South London. “Living in an area as culturally rich and diverse as southeast London, I feel touched by an atmosphere of transcendence forged through a particular type of adversity. When you walk the streets and so many cultures are represented within a community, it's difficult not to ask the questions ‘how did these people get here and what have their ancestors passed through so that I can have the life I am experiencing now?' The story of the New Cross Fire and the subsequent response from different factions of society is one such trial, embodying a process which came to shape a significant element of the discourse around race relations in this country. Living in this part of London, I want to remember and honor those who lost their lives in that fire as their sacrifice, along with many others, feeds directly into my experience of this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You may know him for his soaring solo musical adventures or maybe you're old school and you were always down with his band The Invisible. Perhaps you've seen him playing with Amy WInehouse or Grace Jones. Perhaps you've heard his collaborations with Adele, Yoko Ono or Tony Allen? Perhaps you've not come across him yet, in which case I'm very happy to make the connection. I know him as a genuine, fascinating, generous and ultra simpatico friend that I see far too infrequently. There are few people I know that enjoy talking as much as Dave. He leads you into wild and wonderful places in his delightful and engaging explorations and I'm always keen to see where we might end up. In his presence, time seems to slow down and I find that deeply relaxing and very welcome. I often feel a tad in my head, or even headless but Dave brings a groundedness that is very settling. Those who know him have experienced his radiant smile and his tremendous, heart felt hugs. I feel very lucky to be friends with Dave. He's a real one of a kind and an absolute beast of a musician.I had the chance to get a sneak peak of his new LP and it's really mind blowing stuff. Just wait ! Ah yes. At long last, I'm so happy to welcome my friend on the show. Jessie Ware, Meshell Ndegeocello, Dave Okumu and Eska discuss why you shouldn't appease anybody with your music, loving the souls of your audience, keeping in your mistakes, why music is an essential part of existence, being a jack of all trades, and why finishing a song isn't necessarily a process of letting go. The legendary Grace Jones curates this year's Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre, London, so Music Life is bringing together a selection of artists playing, and some of their musical friends. Jessie Ware has sold millions of records all over the world. After receiving a Mercury Prize nomination in 2012 for her debut album Devotion, she has become one of the biggest names in pop over the last decade. German-born, US-raised bassist, singer, songwriter, rapper and composer Meshell Ndegeocello's prolific musical output mixes jazz, R&B, hip-hop, funk and rock, and she's been nominated for 11 Grammy awards over the course of her career. Producer, guitarist, and The Invisible front man Dave Okumu has worked with the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Grace Jones, and is an institution in the British music scene. Vocalist, composer and producer Eska grew up in London with Zimbabwean heritage, and makes genre-hopping soul music with folk, jazz, reggae and classical influences.

Amazingly fun guy to talk to about music, this is an artist to pay attention to and a show not to be slept on.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Danger Mouse – What More Can I SayGriffith James – Obscene BoyJW Francis – Sweet As A Rosesanchez. – Little BirdCHAI – Miracle (Scoobert Doobert remix)Scoobert Doobert – I'm An Idiot Part II (31:10)Shadow Community – Restless Song Meaningful Stone – A Call From My DreamVillagers – The First DayJoan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsBADBADNOTGOOD feat Karriem Riggins & Arthur Verocai – Beside AprilGhost Funk Orchestra – A Song For Paul Part III (62:43)Scoobert Doobert – Think About ItAndrea Chahayed – Who KnowsLittle Simz feat Obongjayar – Point and KillDijon – Many TimesCHAI – WHOLEMatthew E. As broadcast January 7, 2022 with plenty of extra Joan & Tone for your podcast spirits. Tonight for our first guest artist selector show of the new year, we couldn't be more thrilled to have welcomed Joan As Police Woman to the show to discuss the creative process that went into her latest album with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu. A surprising one night jam session in Paris in 2019 bloomed into the glimmering, brooding flower that is The Solution Is Restless, one of our favorite albums of the year. Joan talked quite specifically about what moved her to create some of the tunes on the LP, and also how she met the late, great father of afrobeat and kind of "took a chance" asking if he'd like to record with her. Not to be missed for fans of the artist or the album.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicOrions Belte – Cherchez La GhostThe Rebels of Tijuana – Et le blizzard s'estompeLeenalchi – Ultimate PrescriptionPart II (30:36)Robert Glasper – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Studios)James Booker – Black Minute WaltzJ Dilla – Waves Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – MasqueraderTony Allen – Politely Part III (60:43)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Geometry Of YouTony Allen feat Damon Albarn – Go BackKrystle Warren & The Faculty – If It Wasn't For The LakeBaths – Lovely BloodflowMeshell Ndegeocello – Forget My NameHere We Go Magic – Over The Ocean Part IV (99:55)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsTony Allen feat Theo Parrish, ESKA, & Andrew Ashong – Day Like This ReworkBridget Kearney – Who Are We KiddingThe Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For YouConnan Mockasin – Momo'sMadlib – The StrollSly & The Family Stone – Skin I'm In

Joan As Police Woman recorded an ambitious and delicious collaboration with the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and singer Dave Okumu of The Invisible. In 2019, the trio got together for a session in Paris to improvise, free from form or tempo. You can hear how they clicked on “Perfect Shade of Blue.”

Joan As Police Woman – AKA Joan Wasser – has just released her latest studio album, The Solution Is Restless. Featuring guitarist, songwriter and producer Dave Okumu and drummer and afrobeat legend Tony Allen, it's another chapter in Joan's incredibly colourful career. She played violin in the Boston University Symphony Orchestra before spending much of the '90s on the road with indie rockers The Dambuilders. Joan then went on to perform with artists like Antony and The Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright and do session work with Lou Reed and Nick Cave, as well as developing her solo career as Joan As Police Woman in the early 2000s. We talk about it all in this interview.

The typical blueprint of tracks with an ABABCB structure has been chucked out the window on Mari Conti's album. “Invisible Things” is an album that is inherently its own in sound, style and structure. A breath of fresh air to listen to!" Pop MagIn our LUVVA COVER feature, we played a VERY atmospheric cover of a beautiful song by Moses Sumney. This week's Talkhouse conversation features a pair of performers who came up in the ‘90s, and who have followed each other's careers since: Tim Burgess of the Charlatans, and Joan Wasser, aka. Joan as Police Woman. Tim Burgess has had a fascinatingly diverse career: He first came to prominence as singer of the Charlatans, who were part of the early '90s Madchester scene along with the likes of The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. But unlike many of their contemporaries, the Charlatans have had a long and prosperous career, releasing more than a dozen albums in addition to Burgess' solo output. This week sees the release of a massive Charlatans box set called A Head Full Of Ideas that spans their career and includes hits and rare tracks. In addition to the box set, a Charlatans tour that's just about to start, and a solo album slated for next year, Burgess has kept himself busy through the pandemic with a fun concept he named Tim's Twitter Listening Party. It's simple enough: He coaxes other musicians to essentially live-tweet their own albums, and it's resulted in literally hundreds of sessions with everyone from his UK contemporaries like Oasis and Blur to a session with Sir Paul McCartney himself. A hundred of those parties have now been gathered into a hardcover book, which also includes rare photos from the participants and lots more. One of those hundred is Joan Wasser, who also got her start in a ‘90s band—the Dambuilders—and subsequently launched an incredibly varied career. She was in Antony and the Johnsons for a bit, and she's recorded a bunch of great records under the name Joan As Police Woman. The first of those, 2006's Real Life, knocked Tim Burgess over when he first heard it—as you'll hear in this conversation. Wasser is just about to release an incredible collaborative album that she made with Dave Okumu and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, not long before Allen's death last year. It's called The Solution is Restless, which is a pretty perfect title, and it'll be out in November. These two have a great chat: Tim is super chill and loves to meditate; Joan is a total firecracker. They talk about how Joan's album “knocked Tim for six,” the myth of Lou Reed—Tim met him as a fan, Joan toured with him—and how Tim, in addition to everything else, has a coffee business. Sort of. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Tim Burgess and Joan Wasser for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting services and social media outlets. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

We start tonight remembering Idris Muhammad, a stalwart of the jazz drums and a transformational figure in funk, disco, breaks, and by extension hip-hop & electronica. Cometh the hour, cometh the Dan after we hit the top of the clock again for our weekly AMPED rock feature, with an absolutely shocking Jonathan Davis cover of the Pet Shop Boys, Lucy Dacus speaking Simlish, and what has to be the tune of the week from The Linda Lindas getting their 2nd spin in 3 days' time.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Idris Muhammad – Crap AppleKendra Morris feat Eraserhood Sound – When We Would RideCommon feat PJ – ImagineJoan As Police Woman feat Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderThe Time – Get It Up Part II (30:03)Bobby Oroza – Breakthru (This Love demo)Arjuna Oakes & Serebii – Even When You're GoneAstrocolor feat Caley Thomas – ParadiseMonster Rally – Tangerine LoungeFlamingosis – AuroraThe Roots feat Cassandra Wilson – Swept AwayThe Root – Distortion To Static Part III (57:30)Turnstile – HolidaySlipknot – DualityCoheed and Cambria – ShouldersPet Shop Boys (with a brief snippet of Jonathan Davis) – It's a SinQuicksand - BrushedDry Cleaning – Bug Eggs Part IV (89:17)The Linda Lindas – Oh!Volbeat – Don't Tread on MeLucy Dacus – Hot and Heavy (Simlish)The Joy Formidable – ChimesLindsey Buckingham – On the Wrong Side
If you don’t know Paul Epworth’s name, you’ll certainly know his music, as he’s produced for the likes of Adele, Florence and the Machine and Rihanna. He asks 100 gecs, Arlo Parks and Dave Okumu about working with analogue equipment in a digital world, studio disasters, ideas that evaporate as they take too long to capture, and the difference between making your own music as opposed to making it for other people. Futuristic pop duo 100 gecs's debut album, 1000 gecs, captivated fans all over the world, including Charli XCX, Rico Nasty and Fall Out Boy, and they’ve been described as a “brain-melting, genre-crushing vision of pop’s future”. Arlo Parks is a 20-year-old musician and poet who is one of the most exciting artists coming out of London right now. She is redefining intelligent pop-soul with her thoughtful, confessional music that has seen her described as "the voice of Generation Z". And Dave Okumu is a producer and songwriter, known for fronting the Mercury Prize-nominated band The Invisible. He is one of the most sought-after collaborators in music, having worked with Adele, Amy Winehouse, Yoko Ono, King Sunny Ade, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, and Tony Allen.

In this first edition of our podcast, Richard speaks to Dave Okumu of The Invisible. Dave's enormous talent is matched only by his wisdom and modesty. So whilst you get a sense of some of his notable work from this conversation, it's worth re-stating just how hugely respected this quiet giant is. The band's debut album was Mercury nominated, as was Dave's debut album as a producer (Jessie Ware's stunning "Devotion"). His and the band's collaborations include work with the likes of Grace Jones, Adele, Conan Moccasin, Paloma Faith, Paul Epworth, Anna Calvi and Floating Points and in terms of raw ability, Dave is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists working in music today.
In the final part of this special edition, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead chats with his good friend Dave Okumu of The Invisible. With Radiohead recently releasing "A Moon Shaped Pool" album and The Invisible releasing their own album in "Patience" the two met up at Roundhouse studios with regular producer DK to talk about their respective creative processes. Dave talks to Ed about how Radiohead have maintained their position in the industry and how they met Kanye West. They also talk about spirituality and Ed gives his thoughts on Invisible's "Patience" album.
For this edition of the Ninja Tune podcast, and the first of two parts, we have a very special guest in Ed O'Brien of Radiohead interviewing his good friend Dave Okumu of The Invisible. With Radiohead recently releasing "A Moon Shaped Pool" album and The Invisible releasing their own album in "Patience" the two met up at Roundhouse studios with regular producer DK to talk about their respective creative processes. In the words of Dave Okumu "I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon chewing the fat with Ed O'brien. Ed is someone who has had a powerful influence over me both through his role in one of my best loved bands but also as a friend. It's difficult to be in the presence of someone so warm, open and generous without wanting to explore a broad range of topics. I'm sure if someone hadn't hit stop, we would still be in the bowels of the roundhouse chatting up a storm right now!”
The most honest, interesting, revealing conversations happen late at night. Presented by Loud And Quiet's Greg Cochrane, the first episode meets The Invisible's Dave Okumu. In it, he talked about his collaborative work with Grace Jones, David Lynch and Jessie Ware, as well as his time spent in Amy Winehouse's band and his involvement with Adele's '25'. Dave also told the gruelling story of his electrocution on stage in Nigeria in 2012, and incident which almost took his life. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
