In the ever-evolving landscape of rock music, where authenticity often takes a backseat to fleeting trends, Elephants and Stars emerge as a beacon of genuine artistry. Hailing from Canada's Golden Horseshoe region, with roots deeply embedded in both Hamilton and Toronto, this quartet crafts music not out of obligation, but from an intrinsic need to express, connect, and resonate. The Genesis of Elephants and Stars At the heart of Elephants and Stars lies the enduring partnership between singer-guitarist Manfred Sittmann and bassist Mike MacMillan. Their musical journey began in the early 2000s with the formation of Soap Opera, a band that quickly garnered attention and secured a deal with Bullseye Records, leading to the release of two albums: Poised and Welcome to the Tangiers. Not content to rest on their laurels, the duo ventured into new sonic territories with The First Time. Their 2004 debut, It's On, produced by the esteemed Warne Livesey (known for his work with Midnight Oil and Matthew Good), was a faster, heavier evolution of their previous pop-punk sound. The album's acclaim was underscored when it clinched the Best Punk Record at the 2005 Toronto Independent Music Awards, with singles like "Goodbye Harlowe" and "New Day Dawning" receiving widespread radio play and television licensing. A Sound That Resonates Elephants and Stars are not just another band in the crowded rock scene. Their music is a testament to maturity, experience, and a profound understanding of the genre's roots. Eschewing the typical grind of endless touring for minimal returns, they focus on delivering performances that matter—sharing stages with luminaries like Television's Richard Lloyd, Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace, and indie legends Lowest of the Low. Such collaborations not only elevate their profile but also place them in front of audiences that appreciate depth, nuance, and authenticity in music. 'Under The Earth And Above Heaven' February 2025 marked a significant milestone for Elephants and Stars with the release of their album, Under The Earth And Above Heaven. Produced by the legendary Ian Blurton, the album is a masterclass in blending high-energy rock with heartfelt lyricism and anthemic melodies. The lead singles, "The Ceiling" and "Strangers on a Train," have already captivated listeners, showcasing the band's knack for big hooks and guitar-driven energy. Blurton's production amplifies the band's dynamic range, resulting in what many critics hail as their most powerful release to date. The album's title carries a unique backstory. After sharing a stage with Richard Lloyd of Television, Sittmann was inspired by Lloyd's autobiography. "We got the title from the Richard Lloyd (Television) autobiography after we played a show with him last year," Sittmann recalls. "When I told him we were thinking of using the title, he thought it was a great name—and that was pretty much that." Critical Acclaim and Audience Reception The release of Under The Earth And Above Heaven has been met with widespread acclaim. Cashbox Canada highlighted the album's fusion of high-energy rock and heartfelt lyricism, noting that it marks an exciting evolution for the band. Similarly, Dropout Entertainment praised the album as a bold new chapter, emphasizing its anthemic melodies and raw, heartfelt lyricism. A Commitment to Authenticity What sets Elephants and Stars apart is their unwavering commitment to authenticity. They eschew the trappings of the modern music industry, choosing instead to focus on crafting songs that resonate on a deeper level. Their approach is evident in their recording process, opting for old-school studios and seasoned producers like Ian Blurton to capture the raw essence of their sound. This dedication ensures that each track is not just heard but felt, leaving an indelible mark on the listener Looking Ahead With Under The Earth And Above Heaven now available on all major streaming platforms,

Marquee Moon, the debut album by Television, released in 1977, is widely regarded as a cornerstone of punk rock and post-punk. With its angular, intricate guitar work and poetic lyrics, the album broke away from the fast-and-furious energy of typical punk, offering a more artful and complex sound. The title track, "Marquee Moon," with its extended guitar solos, became a defining moment in rock history. The band's interplay of guitars, especially between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, along with Verlaine's distinct vocal delivery, made Marquee Moon a critically acclaimed work that continues to influence musicians across genres.Listen to the album Apple Music Listen to the album on Spotify What did you think of this album? Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Joshua Treviño. Joshua works and writes at the Texas Public Policy Foundation and spent the entire 1990s listening a lot to Matthew Sweet. Joshua's Music Pick: Matthew SweetFor listeners of a certain age, just the name Matthew Sweet will evoke a particular memory, and it's likely one that involves heartbreak. Breaking through with the power-pop masterpiece, Girlfriend, Sweet channeled the inner thoughts and emotions of Gen-Xers everywhere and married them to killer hooks and melodies. Of course, his career is more than just that.Matthew Sweet bridges the gap between sweet, melodic power pop and the edgy alternative rock sound of the 1990s, leveraging the guitar work of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd on his best music. His influences are clear -- you hear some Beatles, sure, but also influences of Big Star, the Byrds, and even Neil Young in the guitar tones.  His run of albums from Girlfriend to In Reverse (or roughly 1990–2000) is what we focus on in this show, though additional time is spent on his first two solo efforts and some of his later-career output, particularly the trio of Under the Covers albums recorded with ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs. It's great music and for many, including one co-host, it's essentially brand-new music for the ears. They say nothing is certain in life, but we can guarantee you 100 percent fun when you tune in for this Matthew Sweet edition of Political Beats.

If you ranked rock's great two-guitar tandems, Television's Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would be at or near the top. Verlaine was the poetic songwriter, idiosyncratic singer and improvisatory guitarist, but Television would not have been Television without Lloyd's dazzling counterpunches and composed solos that take melodic leaps no one could anticipate. Television launched the mid-1970s art-punk scene at the grungy East Village club CBGB and produced arguably the greatest album from that era, Marquee Moon. How did the band capture such combustible magic in songs like “See No Evil” and the epic title track? Why did Television make only two more studio albums, and why was Lloyd dissatisfied with each? Why did Jimi Hendrix punch out a teenage Lloyd? What impact did drugs and alcohol have on Lloyd'? How did he wind up making more great music with Matthew Sweet? And how did he feel when Television moved on without him? Was he in touch with Verlaine before the Television leader died a year ago?

TELEVISION – MARQUEE MOON with special guest Will Sergeant. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. 'Marquee Moon' is a revolutionary album, but it's a subtle, understated revolution. Without question, it is a guitar rock album – it's astonishing to hear the interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, but it is a guitar rock album unlike any other. Where their predecessors in the New York punk scene, most notably the Velvet Underground, had fused blues structures with avant-garde flourishes, Television completely strip away any sense of swing or groove, even when they are playing standard three-chord changes. Marquee Moon is comprised entirely of tense garage rockers that spiral into heady intellectual territory, which is achieved through the group's long, interweaving instrumental sections, not through Verlaine's words. That alone made Marquee Moon a trailblazing album – it's impossible to imagine post-punk soundscapes without it. Of course, it wouldn't have had such an impact if Verlaine hadn't written an excellent set of songs that conveyed a fractured urban mythology unlike any of his contemporaries. From the nervy opener, "See No Evil," to the majestic title track, there is simply not a bad song on the entire record. And what has kept 'Marquee Moon' fresh over the years is how Television flesh out Verlaine's poetry into sweeping sonic epics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.  With special guest WILL SERGEANTWill is best known for his work as songwriter and guitarist with Echo & The Bunnymen with whom he has recorded and performed world-wide for thirty years. He also has long-term ties with the experimental side of life, in the fields of performance, recording and the visual arts. Television came out of the CBGB's scene in New York (in fact, they were the first rock band to play the legendary club), but they never fit the "Punk" or "New Wave" label. They were unique, which is why their debut album Marquee Moon sounds timeless, as fresh today as the day it was released in 1977. Fronted by two great guitarists-- the mercurial Richard Lloyd and the enigmatic Tom Verlaine, who also provided unorthodox vocals and most of the songwriting-- Television would influence generations of bands that followed. Though they never achieved commercial success, Marquee Moon regularly appears on virtually every "Greatest Albums Of All Time" list. On this episode, we explore the track that opens the album, "See No Evil". In 2014, he also appeared as Apu's singing voice in an episode of The Simpsons.   Our “Album you Must Hear Before you Die” is “Rid of Me” by P J Harvey.  We hated it and can't pretend otherwise!  She was, at one point, in a relationship with Nick Cave, who admitted that he “still had a certain amount of work to do on (his) understanding of the concept of monogamy.”    Jeff is totally impressed that Kid Rock's built his own personal copy of The White House, with a gold elevator right in the middle.  Of course, Kid Rock's claim to fame is that he had a hit single which sampled Warren Zevon's “Werewolves of London”.  We also try some of Mr Beast's chocolate – pricey but available at your local supermarket. On episode 22 of Past Prime, and with the passing of Tom Verlaine still very much a recent event, Steve and Matty return to the third (and final) album from New York proto-punk legends, Television. Released in 1992, just before the world wide web became a source for instant information, but fourteen years after the band had broken up, "Television" arrived as a complete surprise to fans of the band. Matty, an avowed devotee, and Steve, a reluctant victim of his co-host's aesthetic intimidation, reflect on the merits of the album and the enduring significance of its elusive lead singer. Though Television soldiered on right up until Verlaine's death (albeit without Richard Lloyd for many of those years) and though Tom Verlaine released two modest solo albums in the Aughts, "Television" is the band's swan song. Whereas Matty received the arrival breathlessly, eager to decode its poetry, its noir and its horror, Steve found it to be a "Low T," tossed off fade out. Where Matty sees beauty, Steve sees depression. Where Matty hears invention and precision, Steve hears a bunch of middle-aged guys dozing off. This album that united two friends decades ago as college freshman, threatens to divide them decades later. Will they find common ground? Will they resolve the mystery of Tom Verlaine? Stay tuned for another episode of Past Prime! To read more about Television's self-titled reunion album, check out the full essay at Past Prime.

This week, we delve into what many contend is the blue print for 1990's power pop, the 1991 LP by Matthew Sweet, Girlfriend. Things were not looking particularly up for Sweet as he worked on his third album. Professionally he had no label, and personally his marriage was falling apart.  Having released two competent, but commercial disappointing albums for 2 different labels, no one expected what came next. Tentatively titled Nothing Lasts, the album was rechristened Girlfriend after actress Tuesday Weld objected to her image being used for an album called Nothing Lasts. Having used a drum machine on his previous albums, Sweet decided to go with real drums and to record most of the album live in he studio. With the help of guitar virtuosos  Television's Richard Lloyd, and former Voidoid guitarist and Lou Reed sideman, Robert Quine, Girlfriend is equal parts loud and jangly. Its the perfect soundtrack for Sweet's sweet vocals and harmonies (pun intended) and an unparalleled guitar pop tour de force.

On this week's podcast, we have another “Listener's Choice,” the 1977 debut by Television - Marquee Moon.  Recorded in the fall of 1976 and released in February of 1977, Marquee Moon was a critical darling and a minor hit in the UK. Music fans in the US outside of New York were indifferent. Which is unfortunate because Marquee Moon is an album worthy of attention.  Over the melodic yet solid rhythm section of drummer Billy Ficca and bassist Fred Smith, duel lead guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd bring their own distinctive styles to the band's music, and create something unlike anything coming out of New York or anywhere else at the time.  Add Verlaine's quirky vocal whine, and you have one of the most incredibly innovative and unique albums ever recorded, and one that influenced the music of late 20th century well beyond the limits of its commercial success. Sadly, Tom Verlaine passed away on January 28, 2023. He was 73 years old.

From Billy Inman: When I was a teenager discovering punk rock, I learned about Television's “Marquee Moon” and the band's history before I ever heard the record. I knew they were seminal to the '70s New York punk scene and one of the first bands to play CBGBs. In my muddled adolescent mind, I imagined their sound was like the “three chords and the truth” minimalist punk of their contemporaries, The Ramones. Then I listened to “Marquee Moon,” and it turned everything I thought “punk” was on its ear. Turns out, you can be punk and be supremely talented musicians (guitarist Richard Lloyd palled around with Velvert Turner, a student of Jimi Hendrix. Or so goes the legend). You can be punk and have an almost 10-minute title track (so not punk that it is punk). And you can be punk and record a timeless opus that is as sonically relevant, authentic and influential today as it was in 1977.“Marquee Moon” is an absolute classic — lightning struck itself. It transcends punk or any other label or idiom. More than any other recording, it set a teenage me on down a path of musical discovery that has never stopped. I'm sure I'm not alone in that regard.
