Episode 57 - Elena Pinderhughes is one of the most sought-after musicians in today's vibrant jazz scene. From touring with legends like Herbie Hancock, Common, and Chief Adjuah to performing the iconic “Mask Off” with Future on the Coachella Main Stage, Elena has already brought the flute to a new level. She's a prominent figure in this wave of brilliant young musicians rising within the new jazz world. The first time I heard her play flute, it was alongside the jazz world's GOAT, Herbie Hancock, and I immediately knew she was different. Her sound didn't just complement something already iconic—she elevated it. Since then, I've seen her perform with Terrace Martin, Lalah Hathaway, Snarky Puppy, and so many more. I wanted to understand how she's achieved so much at such a young age.I'd boil it down to these things: Intention, mind set, dedication, and a strong support system with her brother, Samora Pinderhughes.Elena talks about her journey—from being a teenage jazz star to becoming a first-call collaborator across genres. She shares stories about working with Herbie Hancock, Chief Adjuah, Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, and Josh Groban, diving into the lessons she's learned and how she's crafted her unique sound. We explore the modern jazz scene, how she's making her mark, and how she balances artistry with building a thriving career.Elena Pinderhughes is a trailblazer in both jazz and pop culture, and there's no question—her career is only going up from here.‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Please SUBSCRIBE / FOLLOW this podcast to catch new episodes as soon as they drop! Critically acclaimed musician, Samora Pinderhughes has emerged as one of the most conscientious performers of the moment. The multidisciplinary artist has collaborated with a plethora of musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Common, Robert Glasper, Jill Scott, Sara Bareilles, Daveed Diggs and Lalah Hathaway, just to name a few.Pinderhughes is a filmmaker, a composer and a pianist, and he's known for creating performance pieces that are extensions of the conversations of his community – from the political to the personal – that incorporate elements of theatre, poetry, even paintings and digital art. His work is also deeply rooted in social justice and the traditions of Black surrealists of the African Diaspora. For nearly a decade, the 32-year-old has been working on his signature concept known as, “The Healing Project,” which centers around testimonials of community members, whose lives have been shattered by senseless violence, incarceration, detention and extreme policing. The initiative has since expanded and evolved into an arts organization based in New York City that's been featured in short films, museum exhibitions and live concerts.Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson chats in-studio with multidisciplinary artist, Samora Pinderhughes. The Julliard School graduate guides us through his spiritual process of integrating visuals, sound, and emotions to create a musical landscape that touches the heart and soul of its listeners. He's already performed his compositions at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center as well as the historic El Dorado Ballroom in Houston's Third Ward, just blocks away from our I SEE U Studios.
Five-time Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman joins guest host Jon Burlingame to discuss her first Academy Award® nomination for the music of “American Fiction.” Karpman took a rather unique approach to composing this “jazzy” score, by thinking of the actors' voices as musical instruments themselves.“There's a lot of dialogue. And the way the score is constructed is using the actors — particularly Erika Alexander, who plays Coraline, his love interest, and then Jeffrey [Wright], who plays Monk — using their voices as musical instruments. Jeffrey has a great tenor sax vibe, and Coraline has got this sexy alto. And so when they speak, it's under a rhythm section. And then the saxophones and Elena Pinderhughes on flute will come in to kind of move around that. But I did think of the actors as part of the jazz combo, with a rhythm section backing them up.”—Laura Karpman, Composer, “American Fiction”Be sure to check out “American Fiction” ahead of the Academy Awards, live from the Dolby Theatre® on March 10th!For more awards season coverage, please subscribe to The Dolby Creator Talks Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Elena Pinderhughes has been around the East Bay jazz scene since before she learned how to walk. Since recording her first published work as a kid, she has gone on to share stages with Herbie Hancock and work with Carlos Santana. She's also played NPR's Tiny Desk with Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) and even rocked onstage with Future at Coachella . But Elena says she wouldn't be where she is today without family support and the musical institutions of the East Bay. Working with her brother, pianist and vocalist Samora Pinderhughes, assisted her growth at home, while organizations like the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra aided her progress in the community. Elena is preparing for the next iteration of her career, relying on the tools given to her by the Bay Area's multi-talented musical community, as she moves into the world of scoring films, making R&B music and more.

Billy Childs has garnered sixteen Grammy nominations and five Grammy awards: two for best instrumental composition (Into the Light from Lyric and The Path Among The Trees from Autumn: In Moving Pictures), two for best arrangement accompanying a vocalist (including New York Tendaberry from Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro, featuring Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma), and one for best instrumental jazz album (Rebirth, 2018). In 2006, Childs was awarded a Chamber Music America composer’s grant, and in 2009 was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2013 he was awarded the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. He has been awarded a composers award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2015). Childs is currently serving as president of Chamber Music America. “On my first Mack Avenue recording, Rebirth (Billy Childs’ 2017 album which won a GRAMMY® Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album), I wanted to return to a focus on my jazz piano playing,” Childs states. “Acceptance (2020) is an extension of that, and the musicians make it very comfortable for me.” Childs thrives on group improvisation and has recruited fellow master musicians—saxophonist Steve Wilson, bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Eric Harland—as the core ensemble for this collection: Acceptance. Elena Pinderhughes on flute; vocalists Alicia Olatuja, Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek; and percussionists Rogerio Boccato and Munyungo Jackson complete the stellar lineup on this recording.

I remember picking up Robert Glasper's In My Element and being surprised to hear the Hip Hop, soul and elements of other genres dispersed throughout the album. Although, already a Jazz fan, I was elated at hearing my generation's music represented in an art form that was previously, largely guarded from exploration and breaking form. It seems from that moment until now, as the 2010s come to a close, Jazz has reversed its position and also permeated itself into the prevalent genres of music. Glasper aside, Jazz musicians have become the new rock stars it seems - Common even took Jazz musicians (Glasper, Karriem Riggins, Keyon Harrold, Derrick Hodge, & Elena Pinderhughes) to perform at the White House. The soundtrack to Kendrick Lamar's critically acclaimed album, To Pimp A Butterfly was largely composed and performed by the West Coast Get Down, and some of your favorite emcees can't perform without cats like Robert “Sput” Searight, Nate Smith & Maurice Brown. To the delight of many 80s babies, bassist Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner, gathered Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins for Show You the Way from his 2017 masterpiece, Drunk. The Grammy award winning bassist has worked with everyone from Badu and Bilal to Jhene Aiko and Suicidal Tendencies. The new lions are younger and influenced more by the sounds of Dilla and Hip Hop than Davis and Be Bop. Two sides of the same coin, I suppose because the music must grow or remain stagnant and give credence to the frequently espoused sentiment, "Jazz is Dead" which we know to be untrue. This mix could scarcely contain all the artists I wanted to include, but it's a nice jumping off point to discover a lot of great, current musicians that will strengthen or create a passion for America's original art form, Jazz.
