It wasn't that long ago, historically speaking, that you might put on your tuxedo or floor-length evening gown to go out and hear a live opera or symphony. But today's world is faster, more technologically connected, and casual. Is there still a place for classical music in the contemporary environment? Max Richter, whose new album In a Landscape releases soon, proves that there is. We talk about what goes into making modern classical music, how musical styles evolve, and why every note should count.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2024/09/09/288-max-richter-on-the-meaning-of-classical-music-today/Max Richter trained in composition and piano at Edinburgh University, at the Royal Academy of Music, and with Luciano Berio in Florence. He was a co-founder of the ensemble Piano Circus. His first solo album, "Memoryhouse," was released in 2002. He has since released numerous solo albums, as well as extensive work on soundtracks for film and television, ballet, opera, and collaborations with visual artists.Web siteYouTubeSpotifyWikipediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

German-born British composer Max Richter tells John Wilson about his earliest musical influences, including the revelatory experience of first hearing Bach's Double Violin concerto. He reveals how, growing up in Bedford in the early 1970s, a contemporary music-loving milkman would deliver albums by the likes of Philip Glass, John Cage and Steve Reich, musicians who helped inspire Max to pursue his interest in composition. He recalls the raw energy and political engagement of punk bands like Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash whose gigs he saw as a teenager; and how hearing German synthesiser-pioneers Kraftwerk on a BBC nature documentary sparked his interest in electronica. Max also pays tribute to the Italian composer Luciano Berio who tutored Max in Italy and honed his compostional skills. Max Richter is one of the world's most successful contemporary composers, selling more than a million albums and clocking up over a billion streams. His melodic, evocative compositions have been heard in television soundtracks and films scores, including Arrival, Shutter Island, Mary Queen of Scots, Bridgerton and many more. His albums include Memoryhouse, The Blue Notebooks, the eight hour long composition Sleep, and Recomposed which reworked Vivaldi's Four Seasons. He has also composed for theatre and ballet. A festival of new music again this week. With, perhaps, a bit of an electronic / nu jazz feel about it.This week, our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is 'somewhere' by Sun June. Sun June is an American indie pop band from Austin, Texas."Somewhere showcases a gentle maturation of Sun June's sound, a second record full of quiet revelation, eleven songs that bristle with love and longing. It finds a band at the height of their collective potency, able to transport the listener into a fascinating new landscape, one that lies somewhere between the town and the city, between the head and the heart, neither here nor there, but certainly somewhere."In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a Beatles standard by a bedroom pop duo, Memoryhouse. They are from Toronto and have released an EP of Beatles covers called 'Mania'."Mania is a lush and bold exploration of The Beatles that reflects the chaos and longing of the year - and our desperate need to cling to whatever joy we can find. It has that trademark Memoryhouse feeling of melancholy, taking that familiar Beatles classic and giving it a whole new spin, and meaning along the way."#newmusicyoujustdonthearanywhereelsePlaylist:Latter Days – Big Red Machine, Anaïs MitchellMeet Ya – Full Flower Moon BandHall of Mirrors – Let's Eat GrandmaPrecious Drop – SulcusBad with time – Sun June (Album of the Week)Typhoon – Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards12:12 – Jack Murphy, jena keatingRed Moon – Lola BNFJawbone – Ruby HauntPinetrees – Peter Sandberg, Henry GreenThis Boy – The BeatlesThis Boy – Memoryhouse (Luvva Cover feature)Found Footage Of The Second Lost Mission To Titan – Benny BraunLullaby for the Distance – 1010 EnsembleKaren O – Sun JuneWhole Heart – Jessie ReidThis Year (Piano) – Beach FossilsSummer in the City – LyraPace (Moses Boyd remix) – Nubya Garcia, Moses BoydAngel's Flight – BiosphereBad Girl – Sun JuneOn My Mind – Daz Cadwallander

As a young composer, Max Richter is searching for his voice, the sound of a music that is uniquely his. But what he has is only a box of fragments, song experiments, half-formed questions. He sits with them, he thinks on them, he lets them mature – and then he realizes: This is exactly the music he wants to make. As he shapes the fragments into his early masterpiece Memoryhouse, he finds the beauty in moving between modes, working in the mysterious space out of time that only music can create.Learn more about Sleep Song at meditativestory.com/sleepsongSign up for the Meditative Story newsletter, to get a timely episode reminder and a mini meditation in your inbox: http://eepurl.com/gyDGgDBecome a member of Meditative Story to support the show. When this show was once called Pop Culture Club, I asked a band I had just discovered to come on to talk about their remarkable LP The Slideshow Effect, a record I consider to be one of the best of the past ten years or so. When I saw that they were returning with a brand new EP of Beatles covers called Mania, I knew immediately I had to contact them again to check in with what they've been up to these past few years and celebrate their triumphant return! Denise and Evan comprise a true blue dream pop duo that constantly evolves while staying true to a signature sound that always brings me joy. As did this interview of course! We dive deep into the world of cover song creation, the future of the band, the hopes of live performance and more! 00:00 - 05:10 - Introduction 05:11 - 34:12 -  Interview w/Memoryhouse! Better in Headphones

It's not that I don't want to publish more of these, it's just that I don't have enough time. But whatever. I complain about it every time, so I should just accept the new cadence and roll with it. I have made a few goes at BiH 52 over the last few months and it just never got off the ground. I think starting with this one, I am just going to be a bit less discriminating. We get what we get when we get it, and some will be better than others. Despite my efforts, BiH has always been this way. 5.5 years now.My other recent issue is Painting With, the new Animal Collective album. I haven't really needed to listen to anything else and it has been in steady rotation, daily. Oh and I need 4 of these tickets so hit me up if you have extras. Any at all... NM and I did catch them at the Fox in Oakland and it was pretty incredible. A mix of new and old material, mostly new. But I had never seen them perform Feels-era material before myself. This is a long tour so check them out if you can. Certainly one of the best bands out there right now by a long shot.Onto this mix, which does not include any Painting With songs because you should just listen to that album, and uncharacteristically only includes one song that I heard for the first time today. This is a healthy mix of a lot of different types of music. You'll dance, you'll cry, you'll trip out, you'll get down with your lady or your man (or both). I hope you enjoy it, and hope it was worth the wait.BiH 52 feat. RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB:  I discovered Memoryhouse after discovering composer Max Richter three years ago. I was living in Chicago and bought a record called The Slideshow Effect, and was immediately smitten with their sound. I played it for my roommate and told her that, "This is more than my jam, this is everything I love about music."  You can imagine my excitement when I was able to get a hold of them since I was curious about what they've been up to and how they've come to be the band that they are.  It's been awhile since they've put out a record but they are back and just finished a new album that should be out sometime next year. As a silver-club member of the Memoryhouse fan club, I couldn't be more excited to hear new songs. For this 20-minute discussion, we focus on their songwriting process of course, but also the inspiration behind the masterpiece that is The Slideshow Effect.  Hopefully I don't come across too much like Kathy Bates in Misery declaring myself as a number one fan and more like a true music nerd that just happens to adore what Memoryhouse does.  Included are snippets of several songs as well as some links below so you can go out and buy their records.  You won't be sorry that you did.  A million thanks to Denise and Evan for their time.  Much gratitude to you for listening, and as I mention at the very end, the new website is: PopCultureClub.net!   Websites: https://www.facebook.com/memoryhouse http://memoryhouse.tumblr.com/ Songs Featured: Memoryhouse - Lately Memoryhouse - Bonfire Memoryhouse - Heirloom (acoustic) Memoryhouse - Pale Blue Memoryhouse - Little Expressionless Animals Memoryhouse - Walk With Me Two Of My Favorites (YouTube): Memoryhouse - Heirloom Memoryhouse - When You Sleep (My Bloody Valentine Cover)
