Life of the Record
The Making of AMERICAN FOOTBALL (S/T) - featuring Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2024 121:06

For the 25th anniversary of American Football (Self-Titled), we take a detailed look at how it was made. The origins of American Football began with Mike Kinsella's band Cap'n Jazz, who were hugely influential in the punk scene in the Chicago suburbs. Steve Holmes went to high school with Kinsella and was inspired to learn guitar after watching Cap'n Jazz perform. Kinsella and Holmes became close friends and ended up going to college together and were roommates at the University of Illinois in Champaign. During college, Kinsella briefly joined a band with Steve Lamos called The One Up Downstairs. When that band broke up, Holmes and Lamos began jamming together and when Kinsella heard their practice tapes, he asked if he could join. The three of them ended up forming American Football in 1997. Their friends, Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight were just getting their label Polyvinyl going in nearby Danville and they offered to release a three song EP in 1998. By the time they were graduating, they had enough songs for a full-length album, but the band was breaking up as Holmes and Kinsella were moving back to Chicago. Polyvinyl offered to release an album anyway so they booked time at Private Studios with local engineer, Brendan Gamble. The American Football (Self-Titled) album was eventually released in 1999. In this episode, Steve Holmes describes the guitar style he developed with Kinsella that was based on alternate tunings and shifting time signatures, inspired by music they were listening to at the time like Steve Reich, Nick Drake, The Sea and Cake and Red House Painters. Mike Kinsella talks about switching from drums to guitar and writing lyrics inspired by the few romantic relationships he had up to that point. His lyrics came from a diary and were heavily influenced by the melodramatic lyricism of bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Sundays. Steve Lamos discusses his musical upbringing and deep love of jazz, which found its way into the American Football sound with his trumpet playing and compositional approach to the drums. The three of them describe the unique sound they found together and the unlikely story about how even though the band broke up early on, the album still managed to reach people years after it was a released. From recording the week after graduation to constantly having to borrow guitars, amps and tuners to embracing repetitive patterns and avoiding traditional verse chorus structures to singing through paper towel rolls during recording to lyrics about relationships ending and the transition into adulthood to the album cover of the now iconic American Football house, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

Nicholas Krgovich has played in the bands p:ano, Burquitalam Plaza, Slavs, No Kids and also under his full name. This conversation was recorded on November 14th 2023. The Sugar Refinery was a vegetarian restaurant and music venue from the mid '90s to 2003 at 1115 Granville Street. It was known for fostering local music projects which were experimental, collaborative, and whimsical. It was the site of a 48 hour show by the band Beans, who played there dozens of times. Ms T's Cabaret was at 339 West Pender. The building began life as it started life in 1906 as the Myers Hall and later held the city's first purpose-built bowling alley, the Canadian Cycle and Motor Co, the Canadian Legion, the Boilermaker's Hall, and the Marine workers' Pender Auditorium.  During the 1960s the Auditorium was booked by music series, including the Afterthought, and was the site of an early Grateful Dead concert. The building was home to Vancouver's earliest drag bar, BJ's, open from 1970 to 1983, and later, the Vancouver Club Baths also opened in the basement area. After being sold, it took on a western theme as Saddle Tramps before converting to a lesbian bar, Ms. T's, which also had music shows. It was demolished after a fire in 2003. Raised on the East side of the Cascade Mountain Range, Joynes often invokes his home town of Spokane directly in his lyrics. “Her Favourite Hitchcock Films” A native of Northern California, Jerry Vessel was the bassist for the beloved San Francisco outfit Red House Painters. The band, who formed in 1989, put out four albums on 4AD and toured all over North America and Europe before calling it a day in 2001. Post-Painters, Vessel played drums for the Muons and bass for Six Eye Columbia and he also put out two solo albums under the moniker Heirlooms of August. Heirlooms' sophomore album Down at the 5-Star found one of the songs featured in the TV series Parenthood. Vessel's third effort is under his own name this time around and it really makes sense. A stripped down affair that's stark, spare, personal and unflinchingly honest, Her Favorite Hitchcock Films was written about his relationship with fashion designer Alexis O'Connell and it not only details their time together, it also confronts dealing with her sudden loss. Punctuated by piano violins, cellos, and atmospheric production courtesy of American Music Club's Bruce Kaphan, the compositions on Her Favorite Hitchcock Films are as poetic as they are conversational. Beautifully constructed, they're parenthetical, interstitial, referential and emotional. Name-checking Darby Crash, David Lynch, aluminum boats, Thelonious Monk, druid forts and Townes Van Zandt, the songs that make up this album are filled with lyrical intensity in that they conjure the world Vessel and O'Connell built and occupied together. When you're close with someone you construct universes that are made up of the things you mutually love and this is a stirring homage to those universes. Yes, there's darkness and of course, there's pain here, but every song is charged with love. It's vulnerable but in that vulnerability there's tremendous life-affirming strength. It's quite an album. And this is quite a conversation—Vessel talks to Alex about grief, his friendships with his former Red House Painters bandmates, Townes Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jack London and why the piano was his go-to instrument this time around. www.jerryvesselmusic.bandcamp.com www.jerryvesselmusic.com www.bombshell radio.com www.alexgreenonline.com

Things started to get interesting when Gary discovered a local music store called “The Mad Hatter”. He would constantly rummage through bargain CDs and tapes discovering cool bands like Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, and The Red House Painters (to name a few). He was intrigued by the noisy guitar layers, which really spoke to him and they were breath of fresh air compared to the mainstream music played on the radio at that time. With his new musical influences, he knew that sitting at home with an old acoustic guitar just wasn't enough now. He made some local musician friends and soon, he would begin to contribute his new-found guitar skills with a local band noise/punk called “Vacuum Star”. We all know Gary Murray as a writer of some of the most somber, melancholy music on VBM, and “Vacuum Star” was far from that. Funny enough, some members would eventually become long-term contributors to his music in the future. It was while participating in this band Gary gained experience playing side by side with other musicians, keeping his guitar tuned throughout an entire set, and enjoying the energy of a crowd for the first time. After playing for a few years in the band, he would occasionally collaborate with Vacuum Star guitarist Torey Freeman, drummer Nathan Abel and bassist Denny Kopp to focus solely on songwriting. One memorable night happened at a party in Bellevue, where they would write a full album's worth of songs in a single evening. I guess you could say Gary was being prepared to become the future frontman of one of VBM's much loved bands. A heady brew of dark, glitchy, head-messing wonder."It was introduced by Kate Arnold who writes the lyrics and provides the vocals. It's an extraordinary album! And our Luvva Cover is pretty special too! Mark Kozelek, aka Sun Kil Moon and leader of Red House Painters, is another extraordinary songwriter. Missed my Heart is a very strong song with a lyric telling the story of a murder from the point of view of the protagonist. Phoebe Bridgers has done a cover version of this song which, if anything, heightens the emotions that you will feel when you listen to the song. In the latest episode, the Dads discuss what could easily be argued as the best album of 2014 with Sun Kil Moon’s Benji. Frontman Mark Kozelek is no stranger to the indie rock scene due to his years with the Red House Painters, solo material, side projects, and cover albums (we’re looking at you Tiny Cities). Yet, despite the success of his previous works, Benji was an important milestone which relaunched Mark’s career in the public eye. The album serves as a continuation of his first foray into stream-of-conscious lyrics that were heavily featured on his previous album--Among the Leaves. On this album in particular, Mark returns to his Ohio roots and explores his fragile family tree. It’s an album filled with death and despair, as Mark reflects upon the recent passing of his second cousin, Clarissa, and the history of his hometown.

In an effort to keep ourselves interested in this shit thing called "politics", the saddest bois on the RP roster present a series of readings of the lyrics of veritable sadboi icon Mark Kozelek, the leader of the bands Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon and a prolific solo artist, as well as somebody who has evolved from - well - a sad boi to an extremely grumpy middle-aged man, who is still also a bit sad. With Comrade Rice returning to the show for the first time this season, after a brief overview of Kozelek's career he and Jack read three of Koz's more political sets of lyrics from the last few years, and discuss; is he a melt, or, furthermore, an outright sexist? Is "apps not education" the American "care not car parks"? Does Koz's grasp of queer theory leave something to be desired? And, are politics simply better when you're a cat? Following Koz's lead, we trash Trump and the Clintons, and Yair updates us on his gonzo-style investigation of US marijuana law (which, surprisingly, involves smoking lots of it.)

Alexander – Memories The beautifully produced opening track from an EP released in 2012 by Jerome Alexander of Message to Bears featuring the sounds of the cups & saucers jostling about as patterned percussion. 2. Holden – The Illuminations (Excerpt) A brief tumble through the stars via an excerpt from James Holden's new album 'The Inheritors'. 3. Clark – Soft Eruptor One of five tracks from the Iradelphic sessions sent out to people on Clarks mail out list recently & described as some extra material from his recent release 'Iradelphic', it contained some of my favourite Clark tracks ever. The blurred use of Martina Topley Birds vocals here envelop the guitar beautifully. 4. Recomposed by Max Richter – Autumn 3 (Vivaldi, The Four Seasons) A brief striking piece from Max Richter's interesting Four Seasons recomposition project. 5. Girls Names – Pittura Infamante The key track from the brilliant LP 'New Life' by the Belfast 4 piece. 6. Wax Stag – Fantasy Gay A lovely leisurely piece of electro pop from the 80s referencing synth maestro Robert Lee aka Wax Stag. 7. Tim Hecker – No Drums Ghostly, poignant, hopeful and bleak, this piece from Tim Heckers amazing Ravedeath 1972 album is the audio equivalent of a haunting. 8. Chequerboard – Obelisk A brief track from my new album 'The Unfolding' out now on Lazybird records. http://www.chequerboard.com 9. Christ – One Sunny Cloudy Day A melting glacier of nostalgia under a blanket of surface noise from the elusive Scottish electronic artist Christ. The accompanying video by Stefan Larsson depicting two mysterious figures mirroring the movements of robotic trees in a snowy realm is a masterpiece. 10. Bark Psychosis – All Different Things A beautiful exercise in the extremes of quiet & loud from English shape shifting post rock/musical project Bark Psychosis. 11. Red House Painters – Sundays & Holidays An old tumbling autumnal gem from Red House Painters 1994 Shock Me EP. 12. Ethernet – Current (Loscil Remix) Scott Morgan remixes Ethernet creating a stunningly vast realm of icey tones. Listen out for the distant bombs going off. 13. ilex – ilk Great piece from Dublin based Holly McGowans ilex project recalling Susumu Yokota via Orbital. 14. Colleen – Break Away An interesting vocal montage from Cecile Schotts brilliant new album ' The Weighing Of The Heart. 15. Library Tapes - Sun Peeking Through The beautifully poignant title track from Swede David Wenngren's recent album as Library Tapes. 16. Ametsub - Opening Above the clouds time with this strident gem from little known Tokyo-based Japanese artist Ametsub. 17. Blanck Mass - Sundown Music to watch stars explode to would be a fitting description for the music of Benjamin John Power, one of the founding members of Fuck Buttons. 18. Clark – Guy Fawkes/Night Night A hungry robot bird beckons in an unspooling guitar loop in this intriguing vignette from the Iradelphic Sessions mailout EP. 19. Luigi Boccherini – La Musica Notturna (Excerpt) I couldn't resist finishing on this charming snippit of Boccherini. Playful, charming but hinting at so much more.

Episode twelve of Couch Surfing brings you mostly bad news, unfortunately. First off, John and Scott are without new iTunes reviews or e-mail. Secondly, they both lost two and a half hours of their lives, thanks to Richard Kelly's Southland Tales. If that's not enough, the dreaded Knight Rider revamp has been picked up for a series. In lighter news, Scott finds Horton Hears A Who to be quite endearing, and he's oddly excited about the new X-Files movie. John rediscovers the rewarding value of patience after watching Wristcutters: A Love Story, but warns listeners to proceed with caution when considering the very well made, but dark and disturbing Gregg Araki film, Mysterious Skin (Correction: The book that inspired the movie was written by Scott Heim). Finally, the guys contemplate a world without Superman. Scott decides to take an indefinite break from Couch Surfing, to focus on his many other projects. This leaves John without a co-host. If anyone wishes to fill in as a temporary replacement, please send an e-mail. The following artists can be heard in this episode:Relient K, HIM, Bloodhound Gang, The Beatles, Spoon, Mark Snow, The Church, Moby Michael Andrews, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Leftfield, The Killers, Dollshead, Blur, I Monster, Sigur Ros, John Ottman, Red House Painters and ELO.
