In which The Curmudgeons continue their exploration of the City of Angels during arguably its most fertile period, namely the decade of the 1980s. Last episode, we established that the glam metal and punk scenes gestated based on a similar us-against-the-world ethos, albeit expressed much differently from one another. By the late '80s, glam metal had become a bona fide global commodity and its punk...hadn't, morphing instead into something wholly original and awe-inspiring. Here, we tell the story of the rest of glam metal, giving particular emphasis on Motley Crue, Poison and Guns N' Roses. We also track the rise and extraordinary influence of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction.    Enjoy the music of Los Angeles from the late 1980s by accessing our special Spotify playlist:   https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1JXeDNqhrQHMOA5xcxoKhl?si=dee7f0ffbea2413e   Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode:   (00:52-03:50) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of Los Angeles rock in the late 1980s   (05:07 - 17:04) - The Parallel Universe, featuring revies of new music from The Murder Capital and Beach Bunny   (18:02 - 01:09:14) - Christopher O'Connor discusses the explosion of glam metal, runs through a lightning round of some great--and some truly terrible--glam metal singles and discusses the arc of Motley Crue, Poison and Guns N' Roses   (01:10:28 - 01:51:22) - Arturo Andrade discusses the early work and influence of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and then covers the origin story and burning glory of Jane's Addiction    Join our Curmudgeonly Community today! facebook.com/groups/curmudgeonrock   Hosted on Podbean! curmudgeonrock.podbean.com   Subscribe to our show on these platforms: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-curmudgeon-rock-report/id1551808911   https://open.spotify.com/show/4q7bHKIROH98o0vJbXLamB?si=5ffbdc04d6d44ecb   https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/5fea16f1-664e-40b7-932e-5fb748cffb1d/the-   Co-produced and co-hosted by The Curmudgeons - Arturo Andrade and Christopher O'Connor

Our guests today are Chicago-based indie favourites Beach Bunny. Originally launched as a solo project by front-woman Lili Trifilio, the band has grown into a powerhouse of guitar-driven power pop—earning multi-platinum singles, critical acclaim, and viral success with tracks like “Cloud 9.” This week, they return with their third album Tunnel Vision, a bold collection that sees them reconnect with their guitar roots after experimenting with synths on their previous release. In today's episode, we chat with Lili about taking time to creatively reset, returning to a guitar-forward sound, working with producer Sean O'Keefe, and the emotional depth of standout track “Violence.”Beach Bunny: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Tunnel Vision and find Beach Bunny tour dates hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

“Scribbling into oblivion” is how Lili Trifilio of Beach Bunny describes her editing process. (It's also an amazing song title.) She used this phrase in response to a question I like to ask songwriters: when you're editing something you don't like, do you cross it out with a single line or scratch it out? Trifilio wants that word or phrase to disappear forever. Beach Bunny's latest album is Tunnel Vision.

Beach Bunny - “Entropy” from the 2022 album Emotional Creature on Mom + Pop. From TikTok buzzband to their sophomore album Emotional Creature, Chicago-based band Beach Bunny have earned a devoted following, including producer Butch Vig and actor Bob Odenkirk, who even appears in one of their music videos.  A huge part of their appeal is the confessional and, ultimately, relatable lyrics from frontwoman Lili Trifilio. On today's Song of the Day, she tells Stereogum, she took inspiration from the Jonas Brothers for this infectious, polished pop song. Reflecting on her journey as a musician, she continues, "As a young kid I was watching Hannah Montana thinking that was the most unrealistic expectation of all time. But now here I am and all of it happened organically; it just goes very slowly over many, many years. If you want to do something in a creative field, make it a passion project and try it for a few years. You'll learn what you want to do, or you'll get to go on a journey. Embark on your journeys! Don't settle! I mean it! Oh, and don't date toxic boys. Or I guess, if you do, at least you'll have songs to write about them." Welcome JAKE ROCKATANSKY, co-founder/co-host of Q*non Anonymous podcast to Episode 045. For 3 years, Jake & his cohorts at QAA have been investigating and unraveling the Q phenomenon, and all the various conspiracy threads that fit under the big Q tent. We'd never be able to button up the whole Q conspiracy kit n' caboodle in merely one pod ep! Instead, we take a lengthy, illuminating trek into the world of @RealRockatansky, rewind Jake's path to the podcast, explore the annals of Q-research and the QAA origin story, with our main man J-Rock at the helm. We talmbout Q?/ Introducing JAKE ROCKATANSKY @5:00 INTERVIEW w/Jake Rockatansky @15:30    Along with erstwhile collaborators Julien Field and Travis View, in QAA Jake is part of an incredible organic podcast success story. Since 2018, the trio has established their program as the preeminent place to go for a skeptical, empathetic take on this madness, and a humane look into this worldwide conspiracy scourge. These guys are globally respected, often times a reporter's first call when trying to nail down a Q or Q-adjacent story. Nobody has been as unwaveringly focused on the Q beat quite like the QAA dudes & their intrepid correspondents Annie & Liv. They're still truckin' along well into 2021, to the tune of 2 podcasts and 2 Twitch broadcasts every week, with a sizable, dedicated Patreon community that's steadily growing.  In this interview, Jake takes us thru his experiences combating Q, facing down horrific anti-Semitism, satanic panic, going under cover at Q events, interacting with Anons & influencers, and graciously gives us the QAA origin story. J-Rock reveals a beautifully human vulnerability that we've come to know thru his contributions to the pod. He unveils his process, fears, hope, and huge, swollen heart. We get a bit about his childhood in the Chicago burbs, his decamping to SoCal at 18, longtime musical faves like Weezer or Dipset, and latest raves like Beach Bunny and Denzel Curry. In between the beats and the laughs, we get pretty serious too, with regard to Q's human toll, and how we can best stay connected with those we care for that may have lost the plot or themselves amid the Qrazy. So grateful for how generous Jake was, with his time and energy, and that he showed up in this convo in all the ways that have endeared him to thousands of listeners around the world. Jake Rockatansky is a total mensch.  Follow him at @RealRockatansky on Twitter. Check out Q*non Anonymous on all pod platforms and at www.qanonanonymous.com    Vibe Junkie JAM All that jazz plus an absolutely homicidal freestyle sesh from Black Thought of The Roots, dug up from deep in the archives, 2010 Tony Touch radio show on Shade45. Over a cache of unreleased Dilla heaters, on the 4th anniversary of his passing no less, Riq is completely unhinged, spitting an endless barrage of bars that will have your head spinnin, then noddin, and eventually ringin'. Nobody can f*ck w Riq Gz on the microphone, not then, not now, not ever.
