This week, Sadie tells us all about Lesley Gore, the pop sensation in the 1960s with hits like "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me." As a teenager, her heartfelt voice and relatable songs made her famous. But she was more than just a singer; she was also a strong advocate for women's rights and a gay pop icon later in her life. Stauney and Sadie explore her journey from a young pop star to a champion for equality, looking at her music, her impact on culture, and her lasting legacy as both a talented artist and a pioneer for women's empowerment! In this episode — our first-ever "field recording" — we travel up to North London to interview the legendary writer-photographer Val Wilmer. Val takes us back to her earliest musical memories in Streatham, South London, and her immersion in the capital's '60s jazz and blues scenes. We hear about her first pieces for Jazz Journal and her experiences of interviewing (and photographing) the likes of blues singer Jesse Fuller. We also hear about her remarkable DownBeat interview with Jimi Hendrix from early 1968. Val's classic 1977 book As Serious As Your Life — reissued in 2018 — provides the pretext for asking about her passionate championing of the "free jazz" of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and others. We focus on her 1966 Melody Maker encounter with the extraordinary Albert Ayler and the unsolved mystery of his death in 1970. A discussion of Val's deep involvement in the women's movement leads us to clips from Ira Robbins 1994 audio interview with the late Lesley ('It's My Party') Gore — and in particular her startling photo-feminist classic 'You Don't Own Me', six decades young this year. Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on Alan Light's 1991 Rolling Stone interview with Queen Latifah. Many thanks to special guest Val Wilmer. As Serious As Your Life is published by Serpent's Tail and available from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Jimi Hendrix: An experience, Once Upon A Time In Williamsburg, Ayler: Mystic tenor with a direct hot line to heaven?, Memories of Hoppy: An interview with Val Wilmer, The New Jazz Gets With It (That Means With Contemporary Art), Tempo: Coltrane, Shankar and All That Rock & Roll, Coltrane, Davis, Monk, Mingus, Lesley Gore audio and Queen Latifah's New Gambit.

A song that redefined a career and charted a new course for an entire generation, a cover that looks back on that new course and smiles, and a version that fit the film because that's the job it had to do. You Don't Own Me, originally by Lesley Gore, covered by Joan Jett, and by The Blow Monkeys. Outro music is Bad Reputation, also by Joan Jett.

GRAMMY® Hall of Fame Honoree Iconic Hit Writer: "At The Hop", "Rockn Roll is Here to Stay", "You Don't Own Me" "1-2-3" & MoreJohn Madara was born & grew up in Philadelphia, PA at a time when the city was teeming with groups and artists such as The Spaniels, the Clovers, Harvey and the Moonglows, Billy Ward and the Dominos and the great Jackie Wilson. Rock and Roll was starting to take root and John Madara was destined to make rock and roll history. In 1957, John launched his solo career, with his first record, "Be My Girl," reaching the national charts. That same year, John co-wrote with Dave White a song called “Do The Bop." On the advice of Dick Clark, whose local show, American Bandstand, had just gone national, the title and lyrics were changed to “At The Hop." Danny and the Juniors, recorded it, and by Christmas of 1957, it had reached the top of the pop and R&B charts worldwide. “At The Hop” remained #1 for an astounding 7 weeks, the first record ever to reach that success, and it has remained a rock and roll classic to this day. Following “At The Hop," John produced and co-wrote with Dave such mega-hits as “The Fly” (Chubby Checker)“You Don't Own Me” (Lesley Gore) among other smash hits. He also produced for Danny and The Juniors, “Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay." He also discovered one of the most prolific duos of all time, Daryl Hall and John Oates. With them he produced two albums. John moved to L.A. in the ‘70s, where he found success writing and producing for movies and television. He produced the soundtrack for the James Caan/Marsha Mason movie, “Cinderella Liberty," and also produced the title song for the Cliff Robertson movie “Ace Eli and Roger of the Sky.” In the mid ‘70s, he was music supervisor for the hugely successful “Sid and Marty Kroft Comedy Hour." This was in conjunction with an ABC Comedy Hour and network special which launched the new ABC season Madara/White songs have reached millions of people through radio, films and television. Worldwide sales of their songs and productions have reached over 2 hundred million records. Their songs have appeared on some of the biggest grossing soundtrack albums of all time, including “American Graffiti” and “Woodstock” (At The Hop), “Grease” (Rock and Roll is Here to Stay), “Hairspray” (The Fly and You Don't Own Me), “Mr. Holland's Opus” (1-2-3), and “Dirty Dancing” and “The First Wives Club” (You Don't Own Me). It was the 1996 hit film, “The First Wives Club," that paid the contemporary power of their talent the ultimate compliment by not only featuring “You Don't Own Me” but by making it the theme of the movie. "It's the 90s, plastic surgery is like good grooming." More prophetic words were never uttered on screen. We watched "The First Wives Club" (1996) with our friend Jack Fields and you'll have to excuse us while we spontaneously burst out into a rousing rendition of "You Don't Own Me" while wearing our finest ivory pants suits. We still don't know how we let this '90s classic slip passed us all this time, but now that we've seen it you can trust and believe we are full fledged members of the club. It took us a minute to reconcile the fact that we may or may not be closer in age to Dianne, Bette and Goldie's characters than we're comfortable admitting, but once we got passed that little tidbit we were fully enthralled. Watching those three powerhouse comedic actresses let loose while sharing top billing is a sight we don't often get to see these days - and the rest of the cast is filled with MTMUG faves : Stockard Channing! Maggie Smith! SJP! Dan Hedaya! Elizabeth Berkley! Don't worry, we're adding this super quotable movie to our repertoire of daily non-sequitur film quotes! "You think that because I'm a movie star I don't have feelings. Well you're wrong. I'm an actress. I've got all of them!" How much does the general public really trust tech? Despite increased scrutiny and critique of digital platforms, renowned tech policy scholar Orly Lobel defends digital technology, including AI, as a powerful tool we can harness to achieve equality and a better future. Lobel recognizes the criticism of big data and automation, and she does not refute the many challenges that technology presents — but at the same time, Lobel encourages us to improve it. We cannot stop technological development, Lobel argues, but we can direct its course according to our most fundamental values. In The Equality Machine: Harnessing Digital Technology for a Brighter, More Inclusive Future, Lobel presents evidence that digital technology frequently has a comparative advantage over humans in detecting discrimination, correcting historical exclusions, subverting long-standing stereotypes, and addressing some of the world's complex problems: climate, poverty, injustice, literacy, accessibility, speech, health, and safety. Lobel offers insights in each chapter that tackle everything from labor markets to dating markets, revealing just how much of our lives can be changed — and in her view, improved — via technology. Through analysis and storytelling, The Equality Machine promises to add to the robust, ongoing debate about technology and serves as a call to restore human agency over our own values. Orly Lobel is the Warren Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Employment and Labor Policy at the University of San Diego. She is the recipient of prestigious research grants, member of the American Law Institute, a former Israeli military data analyst and Supreme Court clerk, and regularly consults governments and industry on law and technology. An award-winning writer, she is the author of You Don't Own Me and Talent Wants to Be Free. Beverly Aarons is a writer, artist, and game developer. She works across disciplines exploring the intersections of history, hidden current realities, and imagined future worlds. She is the winner of the Guy A. Hanks & Marvin H. Miller Screenwriting Award, Community 4Culture Fellowship, Artist Trust GAP Award, 4Culture Creative Consultancies Award, and the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture smART Ventures grant. She's currently publishing in-depth artist profiles at Artists Up Close on Substack. Lesley Sue Goldstein was born in Brooklyn in 1946 but grew up in Tenafly, NJ. She was a junior in high school when she was discovered by legendary producer Quincy Jones, who produced her 1963 hit "It's My Party" – a song which has achieved legendary status in the classic rock cannon. It remained at the top of the charts for two weeks and prompted Gore to record the Top 10 answer song "Judy's Turn to Cry". Her next two singles – "She's a Fool" and 1964's most empowering feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me" – were also Top 10 hits. Additional Gore hits included "Maybe I Know," “That's the Way Boys Are” and Marvin Hamlisch's first hit composition "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." After conquering the music charts, Gore branched out and began acting. Her film appearances included “Ski Party” and “Girls on the Beach” as well a performance in the concert film “The T.A.M.I. Show.” Her most notable acting role was that of ‘Pussycat' – Catwoman's sidekick on the 1960s Batman television series – where she introduced the single “California Nights.” In spite of her unrivaled recording and acting success while still a teenager, Gore refused to give up her education at Sarah Lawrence College. During most of the 1970s she remained out of the spotlight; but in 1980 Gore resurfaced when "Out Here On My Own," a song she co-wrote with her brother Michael for the film “Fame”, was nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. Throughout this period Gore continued to act on stage and on television. Her life story also inspired the 1996 movie “Grace of My Heart” in which a 1960s bubble-gum singer is shown to be a closeted lesbian. She released her final album in 2005 and came out publicly the same year. Gore also hosted several episodes of the LGBT newsmagazine series “In the Life” on PBS. She died of lung cancer on February 16, 2015 at the age of 68 and was survived by jewelry designer Lois Sasson, her partner of 33 years. Though she achieved only minimal financial success from her recording career, Leslie Gore remains one of the most iconic women in the early history of Rock ‘n' Roll.
Misconceptions, fear and lack of knowledge are common words we associate with the future of technology and even more so about artificial intelligence but should we be optimistic about the direction of AI and the purpose it can serve in law enforcement? This week we're chatting to Warren Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Employment and Labour Policy at the University of San Diego, Orly Lobel. Orly has clerked at the Israeli Supreme Court and is a former military data analyst. As well as this, she has taught at Yale Law School, served as a fellow at Harvard University Center for Ethics and the Professions, the Kennedy School of Government and Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.Orly has recently been awarded a University Professorship for outstanding contributions in teaching and research. Orly regularly consults governments and industry professionals on law, as well as technology. She has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Politico, Bloomberg, Wired and The New Yorker. She is also a member of the American Law Institute. Orly is an award-winning writer, the author of ‘You Don't Own Me', ‘Talent Wants to Be Free' and her forthcoming book, ‘The Equality Machine'.

She was one of Australia's most recognisable and popular personalities in the 1990s — and it all began with singing for Jo Beth Taylor. After starting out in her hometown of Perth on a local TV show, she was snapped up by Molly Meldrum for his label, Melodian Records, shortly after she relocated to Melbourne. Jo Beth tells us about getting eased into the music industry as a backing singer for Indecent Obsession, building a lifelong friendship with Debbie Gibson while on tour, and going to New York to work with Debbie and a who's who of music producers for her debut album, 99 Reasons. Jo Beth reveals the record company debates about what style of music she should record and discusses her first two singles, "99 Reasons" and "You Don't Own Me". Jo Beth's music then took a backseat to a blossoming TV presenting career, with only two further singles released, "A Prayer For Jane" and "I Love My Dog'. By 1997, her all-consuming work for Channel 9 took its toll and Jo Beth stepped away from the spotlight to attend to her mental health — a subject she reflects on when looking back at the ups and downs of her career in entertainment.

Welcome back to Sound Pollution. Its Mother's Day in America and in response to the probable over-turn of Roe V. Wade Sound Pollution is taking part in the Mother's Day Strike (https://www.mothersdaystrike.com/) and will NOT be releasing a new interview episode. We do try to stay away from politics on our show.
