We've been talking about this with CEO Jake Leach for a while now – it will be a 50% smaller with what they're calling advanced sensing capabilities. According to Leach, G8 will adapt to the physiologic variability of each user. It has additional technology built in, based on a new silicon chip design and algorithm. 15 day wear is now the baseline for all Dexcom sensors moving forward. At launch the G8 will only measure glucose but the plan is for a multi-analyte version to follow. That would measure ketones and potassium. Ketones we know – but potassium is very important for people with kidney and possible for people taking some diabetes meds. It's an interesting space to watch.. btw, analyte is just a medical word for the specific thing you're measuring – the target of the test you're running. we're going to hear that word a lot I think..   Looks like an FDA submission for the G8 next year.. with an outside the US launch the following year. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/dexcom-unveils-next-gen-g8-cgm/ XX Glucotrack has submitted its implantable continuous blood glucose monitor (CBGM) for FDA IDE, that's investigational device exemption and would enable the company to initiate a U.S. clinical study for the fully implantable technology. Rutherford, New Jersey-based Glucotrack's device features no on-body external component. The company aims to offer it for three years of continuous, accurate blood glucose monitoring for a more convenient, less intrusive solution. Unlike traditional CGMs that measure glucose in interstitial fluid, the CBGM measures glucose levels directly from the blood. The implant goes five centimeters within the subclavian vein. Glucotrack's active implantable device has a small battery and some electronics that go just under the skin in the pectoral region. The location of the implant is not in a major vessel, but the implant can measure real-time glucose levels as pulsatile blood flows over the tip of the sensor. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/glucotrack-submits-long-term-implantable-cbgm-fda-ide/ XX PharmaSens today announced the publication of data from the first clinical study evaluating its all-in-one insulin patch pump offering. The all-in-one pump pairs the Niaa Essential insulin patch pump with the SynerG continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensor developed by Pacific Diabetes Technologies. However, this system would be one device that features both the pump and CGM technology.   PharmaSens and SiBionics also have a collaboration aimed at developing the all-in-one solution. They are jointly developing the next-generation Niia insulin patch pump with a SiBionics CGM. PharmaSens expects a second feasibility study in the second quarter to evaluate the next-generation pump with SiBionics' CGM.   PharmaSens says the clinical feasibility study of Niia demonstrated for the first time ever that the combined offering is, in fact, feasible. It believes its device addresses the need for alternatives to multi-device diabetes management. systems.   Aggregated MARD for the investigational device came in at 11.6%. Running on a user's smartphone, DBLG2 works as a self-learning algorithm. It continuously analyzes glucose data, calculates insulin needs in real time and automatically adjusts delivery. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/diabeloop-fda-next-gen-algorithm-g7/   XX Among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the initiation of GLP-1-based therapy was associated with a lower risk for all-cause death, several cardiovascular outcomes, all-cause hospitalisations, and hypoglycaemia, without a higher risk for diabetic ketoacidosis.   METHODOLOGY: Researchers in Greece conducted a retrospective cohort study utilising real-world data from a global health research network to evaluate the association between GLP-1-based therapy and cardiovascular and renal outcomes in adults with T1D. A total of 4088 patients receiving GLP-1-based therapies (median age, 43 years; 34.3% men) were propensity score matched with an equal number of patients not receiving the treatment. The risk for hypoglycaemia was lower with GLP-1-based therapy (hazard ratio, 0.72; P = .021); however, the risk for diabetic ketoacidosis did not differ significantly between the two groups. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/glp-1-drugs-tied-cardiovascular-benefits-t1d-2026a1000fbx   XX Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced detailed results from two late-phase trials showing that people with obesity maintained their weight loss long term with either Foundayo or lower-dose Zepbound after switching from higher doses of injectable incretin therapy. The findings from SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN and ATTAIN-MAINTAIN, were presented at the 33rd European Congress on Obesity (ECO) and published in The Lancet and Nature Medicine, respectively.   "Weight regain remains one of the biggest challenges in obesity care, and is often the result of treatment interruptions that cause biology to work against patients, undoing the progress they've made," said Louis J. Aronne, M.D., FACP, DABOM, founder and Chair Emeritus of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, former president of The Obesity Society, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, world-renowned obesity specialist and Lilly consultant. These lab-grown cells not only respond strongly to glucose but were also able to restore blood sugar control when transplanted into diabetic mice. When transplanted into diabetic mice, the cells gradually restored the animals' ability to regulate blood sugar. Long way to go, as we say with most of these mice studies. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/05/260505234620.htm XX Interesting look at how the body controls sugar storage – apparently this finding challenges long-standing biology concepts and could open new directions for disease treatment. Published in Nature, the study describes a potential method for directly reducing glycogen, the stored form of sugar in the body. These scientists discovered that glycogen can be directly regulated by ubiquitin, a protein best known for marking damaged proteins for recycling or removal. The study is the first to show that ubiquitin can regulate glycogen in humans, overturning more than 50 years of scientific understanding. Oklahoma consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of diabetes and diabetes-related deaths. Researchers found that the mix of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas varies widely from person to person, and that variation plays a central role in how the body regulates blood sugar. The study involved a deep dive into islet cell function that is linked to donor traits associated with observable characteristics, or phenotype, such as sex, race and ethnicity, as well as genetic information, or genotype, including predicted ancestry and genetic risk for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The findings highlight that islet cell composition, rather than the physical size and shape of islets, is a key factor in regulating hormone release. The team found that the makeup of pancreatic islets plays a major role in how effectively they release insulin and glucagon — key hormones that regulate blood glucose. Islets with a higher proportion of insulin-producing beta cells showed stronger insulin secretion in response to various stimuli, while higher levels of alpha and delta cells were generally linked to reduced insulin output. In addition, the researchers found that islet hormone secretion is affected by donor traits, such as sex, race and ethnicity and their genetic makeup, including ancestry predicted from genetic testing and genetic risk for type 2 diabetes. Combined, the findings of the study have significant implications for understanding the factors that may predispose people to diabetes. "This study is the tip of the iceberg," said Dr. Evans-Molina. "We hope this dataset becomes useful to the entire diabetes research community and that researchers use it to answer questions about the genotype-phenotype correlation within these data."   https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-funded-study-maps-human-pancreatic-islet-cells-offering-new-clues-diabetes-risk XX XX XX Research published recently in JAMA Network Open offers illuminating evidence suggesting there is a positive association between GLP-1 agonists—drugs commonly used to treat obesity and diabetes—and better outcomes among breast cancer patients.   "This study suggests that GLP-1 drugs may offer protective benefits potentially improving survival and recurrence risk in some female patients with breast cancer – whether this is related to weight control, improve cardiovascular health or other mechanisms remains to be studied," said study senior author Bernard F. Fuemmeler, Ph.D., MPH, associate director for population sciences and the Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.   Breast cancer patients who are also obese or have type 2 diabetes experience more aggressive cancer growth and worse outcomes. Prior studies have shown that weight loss treatment and surgery following a breast cancer diagnosis are associated with improved heart health and increased survival.   What are GLP-1 drugs? Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). Approved to treat type 2 diabetes in 2005 and weight management in 2021. Impacts on breast cancer survival and recurrence are still unclear. Since 2020, the use of these drugs has increased dramatically, where approximately 12% of Americans have used GLP-1s for weight loss, according to a RAND report.   The research findings Through a retrospective cohort study examining the electronic health records of more than 840,000 breast cancer patients who were diagnosed between 2006 and 2023, the results suggest there is a potential link between GLP-1 RAs and improved outcomes among breast cancer patients who are also obese or have type 2 diabetes.   GLP-1 RA use was associated with an overall lower risk of death from any cause over a 10-year follow-up period among breast cancer patients. Additionally, breast cancer survivors who used GLP1-RAs for diabetes or obesity had a significantly lower risk of their cancer returning over 10 years following their initial treatment.   "Our findings align with emerging preclinical research and contribute to a growing body of literature related to GLP-1 RA use in oncology settings," said study lead author Kristina L. Tatum, PsyD, MS, of the VCU School of Public Health.   What's next? Further studies are needed to understand the biological mechanisms, if any, between GLP-1 RAs and breast cancer outcomes. The research team intends to further evaluate these correlations through randomized clinical trials.   "Our study underscores the potential of GLP-1 RAs as an adjunct strategy for improving cancer-related outcomes among patients with breast cancer, although clinical trials are needed to inform effective therapeutic approaches and clinical decision making," Fuemmeler said. https://www.oncology-central.com/could-glp-1-receptor-agonists-improve-outcomes-for-breast-cancer-patients-with-obesity-or-with-type-2-diabetes/ XX Researchers at UC Riverside gave cannabis to obese mice and found that not only did the rodents lose weight, but when given a concentrated cannabis oil, the mice also saw striking benefits in their metabolic function. DiPatrizio said his team studied the issue to better understand why cannabis users show significant reductions in weight and risk for diabetes compared with nonusers. "We would think that chronic cannabis users would be eating more and weigh more, but it's just the opposite," DiPatrizio said. Scientists are increasingly examining the possibility that cannabis compounds could fight obesity or metabolic disorders like diabetes. Cannabinoids interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, which partially controls nearly every aspect of our physiology, including metabolism and appetite. Le Mali est confronté à sa plus grave crise sécuritaire depuis 2012, après l'attaque samedi des jihadistes et des séparatistes touaregs sur la ville-garnison de Kati, près de Bamako, et sur la ville de Kidal, à l'extrême-nord du pays. Quelles sont les conséquences de ces événements pour la junte au pouvoir, dont le numéro 2, le général Sadio Camara, a été tué ? Pour Étienne Fakaba Sissoko, « la junte est déboussolée ». Cet universitaire est le porte-parole de la Coalition des forces pour la République de l'imam Mahmoud Dicko, actuellement en exil à Alger. Il est l'invité de Christophe Boisbouvier. RFI : Est-ce que vous êtes surpris par cette offensive conjointe des jihadistes et des séparatistes touaregs ? Étienne Fakaba Sissoko : Surpris ? Absolument pas. Parce que depuis quelques années, c'est ce que nous disions, le tout militaire n'a pas produit de résultats probants depuis quelques années. Et le fait de sous-traiter également la sécurité du pays à travers des mercenaires russes était un danger qu'il fallait éviter. La mort du numéro deux de la junte, le général Sadio Camara, qu'est-ce que cela représente pour la suite des événements ? C'est tout un symbole. C'était celui qui avait travaillé avec d'autres à la venue de Wagner au Mali. Oui, parce qu'il avait fait ses études en Russie et qu'il parlait russe, c'est ça ? C'est ça. Et parce que, aussi, c'est lui qui était le principal responsable des événements du 21 mai 2021, le second coup d'État qui était intervenu, donc, c'était un maillon important du dispositif de la junte. Je ne sais pas plus que vous, mais ce qui est évident, c'est que le fait qu'il ne communique pas, depuis hier à aujourd'hui, montre à quel point il est déboussolé, montre à quel point le pouvoir lui-même est déboussolé. Et le pays est aujourd'hui sans gouvernail, se retrouve dans une désolation totale. Et ce sont les videomen malheureusement, ce sont les activistes à la solde du gouvernement qui aujourd'hui, à coups de propagande, s'amusent sur les réseaux sociaux à balancer toutes sortes de nouvelles. Et de fake news, évidemment… Absolument. La reconquête de Kidal par les séparatistes touaregs du FLA, le Front de libération de l'Azawad, est-ce que c'est un revers stratégique pour le pouvoir de Bamako ? Exactement. C'est l'effet combiné Kati-Kidal qui représente véritablement le symbole de toute la journée du samedi et de ce qui a suivi. Kati, c'est le cœur militaire et politique du régime. Et Kidal, c'est le symbole même du récit officiel de la reconquête du territoire qui a été brandi depuis 2023 par le gouvernement. Donc être frappé le même jour sur ces deux points-là, en présence de ceux qui ont été présentés comme les sauveurs de la République, à savoir Wagner, c'est quelque chose, évidemment, qui est un coup dur pour le Mali, mais qui est un coup dur également pour cette junte. Les rebelles disent qu'ils ont conclu ce dimanche un accord avec Africa Corps pour leur retrait, ce qui semble être confirmé par plusieurs sources internationales. Donc tout indique que le pays est aujourd'hui dans le noir total. On ne sait pas qui gouverne, on ne sait pas qui dirige, qui prend les décisions et comment tout cela fonctionne. Les combattants russes d'Africa Corps qui s'enfuient de la ville de Kidal, est-ce que ce n'est pas humiliant pour Moscou ? Je ne sais pas ce qui est humiliant pour Moscou, mais ce que nous, nous avons toujours dit, c'est que Wagner, d'abord et ensuite Africa Corps, n'ont jamais été la solution de la guerre au Mali. Ils sont venus avec des méthodes très contestables qui ont occasionné énormément de pertes en vies humaines, énormément de bavures, énormément de violations de droits de l'homme. Et ce qui est évident aujourd'hui, c'est que Africa Corps est au Mali parce que les autorités actuelles l'ont permis. Et donc pour nous, le véritable responsable de tout ce qui est en train de se passer, ce sont d'abord les autorités maliennes, c'est d'abord la junte malienne. Et c'est pourquoi nous disons qu'il est important que cette junte-là parte pour justement mettre de l'ordre dans tout cela. Une fois la junte partie, c'est à ce moment-là que de nouvelles voies pourront s'ouvrir avec les différents protagonistes, avec les groupes armés aujourd'hui qui, de par leurs actions malheureusement, sont en train d'affaiblir l'Etat, d'affaiblir le pays. Nous sommes tous Maliens et quelles que soient les pertes que nous avons observées depuis samedi jusqu'à maintenant, qu'ils soient du côté des militaires maliens, qu'ils soient du côté du FLA ou encore du Jnim, ça reste des Maliens. Donc c'est le sang des Maliens qui est en train d'être versé aujourd'hui. Donc notre priorité, c'est d'arrêter ce cycle de violences là et d'ouvrir de véritables dialogues pour bâtir un projet de paix. Dans votre communiqué de ce dimanche, vous dites qu'aucun groupe armé ne peut imposer l'avenir du Mali par la force. Mais ne craignez-vous pas que les jihadistes du Jnim ne mettent le Mali à feu et à sang ? Ce risque est réel, mais c'est pourquoi nous insistons sur le fait que la junte doit partir pour ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives. Parce qu'aujourd'hui, vous avez vu, depuis cinq ans, la junte a fait de la guerre un projet de société. Et la guerre à elle seule dans aucun pays du monde n'est arrivée à circonscrire une crise. C'est pourquoi nous disons aujourd'hui qu'il est important de tendre la main à toutes ces personnes, à toutes ces entités qui sont aujourd'hui impliquées dans cette crise-là. Et le dialogue est possible. Le seul obstacle aujourd'hui au dialogue et à la paix, c'est la junte. Uno de ellos es la influencia política, otro es la desinformación, que es un gran pilar que se lleva una mayor parte del presupuesto de acuerdo a los documentos internos. Y la última es un trabajo muy estrecho con los servicios de seguridad rusos, porque La Compañía en sus inicios es fundada por la misma persona que el grupo Wagner Evgueny Prigojine, que fallece en la explosión de su avión privado en 2023". "Cuando Prigogine muere es el servicio de inteligencia exterior ruso el que asume la tutela de esta compañía. Un lobby al uso no está dirigido, ni financiado por los servicios de inteligencia rusos", apunta Álvarez Jurado. Una campaña para denigrar a Milei En Argentina, la influencia de "La Compañia"  fue investigada por Diana Cariboni (openDemocracy) y Santiago O'Donnell (Filtraleaks). Se estableció en el país un sistema de distribución de contenidos en medios digitales y redes sociales entre junio y octubre en 2024 para amplificar malas noticias y mermar la imagen de Javier Milei, que en ese momento apoya a Ucrania. "Estos artículos no tienen necesariamente que mencionar a Rusia, explica la periodista. Lo que quieren es controlar el discurso público en el país y a veces sirven también para alinear la política nacional con los intereses de Rusia, no tiene que alabarse a Putin. Lo que describen los documentos es una estrategia en torno a tres ejes: desincentivar el apoyo militar a Ucrania, dañar la reputación del propio Milei y exacerbar las tensiones con Chile. Hablan inclusive de un potencial conflicto militar". En los documentos que analizó el consorcio aparece un registro de al menos 250 noticias, análisis y artículos de opinión presupuestados en 283 000 dólares, solo que queda por aclarar realmente cómo se gastó ese dinero. El propio FSB - los servicios secretos rusos - habla de hacer una licitación para saber cómo se han administrado los recursos ya que mucho dinero estuvo en juego, hasta 3100 dólares por un solo artículo. "Hubo únicamente dos medios que admitieron haber recibido pagos de terceros por estos artículos, pero no de agentes rusos. Y en este caso, el consorcio no pudo verificar de forma independiente quiénes eran estas personas detrás de los pagos. Pero lo que dijeron estos medios fue que eran hombres de negocios, empresarios que estaban preocupados por el estado de la industria en Argentina y que estaban preocupados por el hecho de que mi ley en aquel entonces había ralentizado mucho la construcción pública", detalla la investigación.  Los documentos analizados con máximo rigor han evidenciado la existencia de periodistas fantasmas en Argentina. Lo que ha causado mucho revuelo tanto en presidencia como en la embajada rusa en Buenos Aires. Javier Milei está ahora utilizando esta investigación para anular las acreditaciones de prensa de muchos periodistas argumentando que reciben dinero de Rusia. "El interés público de publicar esta investigación sobre una operación de injerencia extranjera de este tipo sobre una nación soberana era innegable. Evidentemente en ningún momento esta investigación tenía como objetivo mermar la libertad de la prensa. Nosotros somos organizaciones que trabajan a favor de la libertad de la prensa y no en contra, y  no nos podemos responsabilizar del uso partidista que se haga de la investigación o de alguno de los artículos", lamenta Álvarez Jurado. Una "misión de estabilización" en Bolivia "La Compañía" también nos lleva a Bolivia donde figuras clave de la organización viajan directamente a La Paz para atenuar los efectos del intento de autogolpe de Luis Arce e impulsar su reelección en 2025. Se trata de una "misión de estabilización" donde agentes irán hasta expresar la voluntad de redactar los discursos de Arce y de otros altos miembros del gobierno en aquel entonces. Se habló también de crear una unidad de comunicación dentro del ministerio "para ayudarlos de nuevo a afianzar estas narrativas y a mover el discurso hacia los campos de interés del gobierno. Lo describen como un gobierno afín a los intereses de Rusia y dicen que un cambio de gobierno sería una amenaza para los intereses rusos". Arce decidirá finalmente no presentarse nuevamente y no se sabrá los resultados que habría tenido los esfuerzos de "La Compañía". Más allá de las prácticas escandalosas de este aparato, vale destacar que los periodistas que se encuentran de una u otra manera en esta telaraña terminan ganando mucho más de lo que ganarían normalmente. Los métodos rusos se aprovechan de la precariedad de la profesión: "Creo que se ve muy claro, por ejemplo, en el caso que está al origen de la investigación de Forbidden, específicamente el caso de Yalike, que en 2019 publicando tres artículos ya ganaba más de su salario mensual de periodista. No quiero decir que se justifique,  pero ayuda mucho a entender y a ponerse en los zapatos de la persona que decide. El Kremlin invierte y mucho en una guerra híbrida en la que la influencia rusa busca expandirse desde Mali hasta la República Centroafricana pasando por Bolivia y Argentina. Es lo que muestra una investigación de un consorcio de 15 medios, que tuvo acceso a documentos sensibles que ponen en evidencia cómo un aparato financiado por el FSB, los servicios secretos rusos, opera para manipular la opinión. ¿Cómo La Compañía - como se hace llamar - ha logrado operar en tres continentes para afianzar los intereses de Moscú en el mundo?  Todo empieza en el 2024 con el caso de Ephrem Yalike, un periodista de República Centroafricana que había sido captado por "La Compañía" para publicar artículos afines con los intereses de Rusia en su país y en otros países de África. "Tras años trabajando para ellos, Yalike decide muy valientemente romper vínculos, exiliarse y su testimonio acaba siendo central para nuestra primera investigación: "Propaganda Machine", la máquina de la propaganda", cuenta Sofía Álvarez Jurado, periodista de Forbidden Stories, media de investigación miembro de este consorcio. Soucieuse de continuer à apparaître comme une grande puissance, la Russie a réinvesti le continent africain depuis plusieurs années. Elle s'appuie sur un narratif reprenant celui de l'ancienne Union soviétique. Mais derrière les promesses de fraternité sans frontières, de partage de connaissances et de richesses, se trouvent d'autres objectifs moins avouables, comme le recrutement de combattants pour sa stratégie de chair à canon en Ukraine. Ces dernières années, le soft power, ou l'influence russe, s'est développé et transformé. C'est un studio de musique d'Abidjan où se tient un concours de chant discret, auquel assiste notre correspondant Benoit Almeras. On chante en anglais et en français, Alicia Keys, Garou, Lara Fabbian… Mais pour les candidats, l'horizon n'est pas New York ou Paris, c'est Moscou. L'enjeu de ce casting vocal : une participation au festival « La route de Yalta ». Organisé pour la première fois en 2019 dans cette station balnéaire de Crimée occupée, bien connue des amateurs d'histoire, il a désormais lieu au Kremlin, dans la capitale. On y célèbre les classiques russes et la « Grande guerre patriotique », comprendre la Seconde guerre mondiale. Une époque très lointaine pour ces candidats, jeunes et plus attirés par le voyage et la recherche de notoriété. Un des participants explique sa présence par « le fait que ce soit en Russie, un pays que je n'ai jamais imaginé découvrir. Ce serait aussi un tremplin pour moi et j'espère aussi que mon pays va reconnaître mon talent ». Pour voir Moscou, certains veulent se donner toutes les chances, comme ce candidat qui pousse l'hymne russe a capella. Lors de l'édition 2025, c'est un artiste ivoirien qui a représenté l'Afrique, et pas n'importe lequel : Emmanuel Désiré Boyer dit « Vova », vainqueur de l'édition 2024 de « The Voice Afrique Francophone ». À « La route de Yalta », il a été récompensé du prix du public pour Katyusha, chant patriotique de l'Armée Rouge, interprété en langue dioula. À l'origine de la participation de Vova, et de ce casting, Eben-Ezer Dion, coach vocal pour The Voice Afrique francophone. Ses liens avec la Russie remontent à plus de 20 ans : « J'ai étudié en Russie, je suis allé là-bas pour des études en musique, à l'Académie Gnessine, qui est une académie très prestigieuse là-bas. C'est après ça que je suis rentré au pays, et voici que je prends des initiatives pour faire avancer la musique en Côte d'Ivoire. Si vous voulez, c'est un prolongement, une manière de contribuer à l'action culturelle de la Russie dans l'Afrique francophone. C'est ce qu'on essaie de faire en partenariat avec l'association. » Festival de chants pour soutenir l'annexion forcée de la Crimée Cette association, c'est l'Aruci, Association des russophones de Côte d'Ivoire, créée en 2021. Sa présidente, Tatiana Rakitina assure qu'elle ne fait pas de politique : « Pour nous, c'est plutôt une opportunité pour la Côte d'Ivoire de sortir à l'étranger, de conquérir de nouveaux spectateurs. C'est plutôt un événement professionnel des amateurs de musique plus qu'un événement idéologique. » Pourtant, le festival de Yalta vise aussi à faire reconnaître la souveraineté russe sur la péninsule de Crimée, annexée de force par la Russie en 2014. Mais pour Tatiana Rakitina, comme pour le gouvernement de Moscou qui dénonce souvent la « russophobie » occidentale, c'est bien l'image de la Russie qui est attaquée. Bien qu'en Afrique, elle demeure positive selon elle : « Je peux vous dire que le visage de la Russie était bien brillant et souriant il y a quelques années. Maintenant, il y a dans certains pays une tendance à vouloir éliminer la culture russe ou diminuer sa valeur. Mais pas en Afrique. L'Afrique n'a jamais changé [envers la Russie]. » L'Aruci est aussi une organisation partenaire des Maisons russes. Officiellement des centres culturels, elles ont essaimé sur le continent, selon Lou Osborne, investigatrice du groupe All Eyes on Wagner : « On a vu une accélération de la diplomatie culturelle depuis 2024, avec une multiplication de l'ouverture de ces centres. Leur modèle est novateur : l'État russe ne peut aller aussi vite qu'il le voudrait, donc il a délégué une partie de ces ouvertures et de la gestion à des sociétés non-étatiques, ça leur permet d'aller plus vite. On remarque que c'est notamment là que se passe la partie la plus offensive du soft power, on dépasse la promotion de Pouchkine et de la langue russe. » La diplomatie culturelle russe a une tête de pont, c'est la Rossotrudnichestvo, un organisme officiel du ministère des Affaires étrangères russes, dirigé par Evgueni Primakov Junior, un très proche de Vladimir Poutine. C'est là notamment que se gèrent les bourses pour les étudiants africains, explique le chercheur sénégalais Ibrahima Dabo, lui-même passé par une université russe : « C'est à partir des années 2000 que la Russie a commencé à avoir des intérêts sur le continent africain. Dans ce contexte, des outils de l'époque soviétique ont été réadaptés. Rossotrudnichestvo a été créée en 2008 par un décret du président Dmitri Medvedev, mais c'est l'héritière d'une agence née en 1925 autour de la sœur de Léon Trotski. Cette agence est au cœur aujourd'hui des actions culturelles et humanitaires sur le continent, elle travaille avec des associations locales, notamment des réseaux d'anciens étudiants. La diplomatie éducative est devenue très importante. Rossotrudnichestvo gère les bourses d'étude, ce qui permet de développer son influence, et de donner une image d'ouverture, de montrer une bonne image de la Russie, des conditions d'accueil, de la qualité de l'enseignement. » Moscou a accéléré ses opportunités pour des milliers d'étudiants africains. Au Sénégal par exemple, on est passé de moins de 20 à 130 bourses en quelques années, selon Ibrahima Drabo. Saint-Valentin à la Maison russe, relais médiatiques et influenceurs Derrière Rossotrudnichestvo, certaines Maisons russes ont été montées comme des « franchises » dans l'écosystème Wagner, comme à Bangui, en Centrafrique, dont les canaux de communication multiplient les images d'enfants et de jeunes épanouis, devant des documentaires officiels russes, des films d'action à la gloire du groupe paramilitaire russe, durant des cours de russe, ou encore dernièrement lors d'une grande fête en chanson pour la Saint-Valentin. Son directeur, Dimitri Sityi, est conseiller du président centrafricain Faustin-Archange Touadéra, gestionnaire d'entreprises qui extraient or, diamant et bois, et à la manœuvre de multiples campagnes informationnelles anti-françaises, anti-américaines ou anti-Nations Unies. À Bangui, la Maison russe est devenue un lieu de socialisation, notamment pour des jeunes de milieu peu favorisés. On y fête Noël, on y candidate au championnat de slam, on y trouve aussi à prix modique les sachets d'alcool produits localement par Wagner. À lire aussiPlongée dans la machine de désinformation russe en Centrafrique   Avec les médias comme Russia Today, de plus en plus présents sur le continent (Éthiopie, Sénégal), ou des organisations satellites comme Afrique média ou la radio Lengo songo en Centrafrique, ces centres culturels servent à véhiculer l'image d'une Russie ouverte, bienveillante, à l'opposé d'une Europe présentée comme décadente et xénophobe, voir tout simplement nazie. Un récit repris par un nombre grandissant d'influenceurs africains installés en Russie, valorisés par les algorithmes des réseaux sociaux, comme « l'Ivoirorusse ». « La Russie, c'est bien, j'exhorte tout le monde a visité la grande Russie de Poutine. C'est une très grande expérience », dit-il à ces plusieurs centaines de milliers de suiveurs sur TikTok, se félicitant de « commencer à oublier des mots de français ». Coiffé de sa chapka, « l'Ivoirorusse » est aussi un des promoteurs du programme Alabuga start qui permet officiellement à des jeunes femmes d'obtenir des formations et des diplômes dans cette zone économique spéciale du Tatarstan. Plusieurs enquêtes ont montré une réalité bien différente, et des mécanismes de « traites d'êtres humains », selon l'ONU. Le nouvel écosystème russe met en valeur les coopérations académiques avec la Russie et des opportunités de recrutement, dont on sait qu'elles peuvent conduire des jeunes hommes sur le front en Ukraine, et des jeunes femmes dans des usines de drones. « Ces réseaux de recrutement sont une nouvelle facette du soft power, ça permet à la Russie de façonner l'image donnée dans ces pays-là », analyse Lou Osborne, de All Eyes On Wagner. « C'est une Russie d'opportunités, pour une meilleure vie. Il y a une industrialisation de l'influence russe, avec une multiplication de canaux, un effort total médiatique, culturel, et des services de sécurité, au service de cette influence », ajoute-t-elle. Avec l'Église orthodoxe, « l'alliance du missel et du missile » La Russie loue les vertus présentées comme patriotiques et familiales, qui seraient les siennes et que partageraient les Africains. Pour cela, quoi de mieux que de se placer sous l'autorité divine, via sa propre église, l'Église orthodoxe russe, autonome depuis le schisme consécutif à l'invasion de l'Ukraine, et qui n'hésite pas à mettre les moyens pour attirer les clercs. Ils ont fait beaucoup de promesses : construire les églises, des écoles, donner des bourses aux prêtres, acheter des voitures. Mais jusque-là, ils n'ont rien fait à part louer une salle pour en faire une église. Ils ont envoyé quelques personnes à Moscou pour un séminaire de théologie, mais ils ont vu que le niveau de théologie et d'éducation est bien loin du niveau universitaire. Mais ils leur ont dit : "Ok, vous êtes prêts à rentrer en Afrique accomplir votre mission". Mais quel type de mission ? » Cette diplomatie religieuse n'est pas neutre, car l'église orthodoxe n'est pas une église comme une autre. Elle est étroitement imbriquée dans le pouvoir russe et le Kremlin, comme l'expliquait récemment sur RFI l'historien spécialiste du monde orthodoxe, Jean-François Colossimo : « C'est une progression opportuniste. Partout où il y a un clergé achetable, cette pseudo-église agit. Plus on monte dans la hiérarchie, plus elle est contaminée par le FSB [les services de renseignement russes, NDLR] et aux mains du Kremlin et de Poutine. L'Église russe n'a jamais été pensée comme une église internationale. Donc, si elle va en Afrique, c'est pour offrir le monde orthodoxe africain à Poutine. Ce sont eux qui bénissent la mère. Il a récemment été publié que le budget de leur machine de propagande s'élevait à 1,5 milliard de dollars. Et, bien sûr, une grande partie de cette somme est destinée à l'Afrique », a-t-il affirmé à notre correspondante à Nairobi Albane Thirouard : « Cela s'accompagne d'opérations informationnelles très sophistiquées. Ils sont également présents sur les plateformes utilisées par les jeunes générations. Ils travaillent intensivement dans le but de pénétrer les pays grâce à ce qu'on appelle le soft power. Il est bien connu que des structures comme Rossotrudnichestvo ainsi que l'Église russe cherchent à s'implanter progressivement au sein des sociétés africaines. Mais comme on a pu le constater par la suite, cela peut évoluer vers des problèmes plus graves pour ces pays. Tous les pays ne comprennent pas ce qui est en train de se passer. Nous, nous avons une arme puissante que nous appelons la vérité, et nous essayons de nous battre avec les moyens dont nous disposons. Leur machine de propagande, elle, combat souvent avec des mensonges. » Au Kenya, la multiplication des témoignages sur les recrutements contraints pour la guerre en Ukraine a écorné l'image de la Russie. Reste à voir si cette réalité viendra enrayer le rouleau-compresseur de l'influence et de la communication mis en marche par Moscou. Ils seraient aujourd'hui entre 3 000 et 4 000. Au fil des mois et d'une guerre qui s'enlise, la Russie a accéléré le recrutement de combattants africains pour son invasion de l'Ukraine. Certains se retrouvent au front en connaissance de cause, d'autres par tromperie persuadés de quitter leur pays pour une place à l'université ou un emploi. Aujourd'hui, le voile se lève sur ce système de recrutement basé sur des agences de voyage et des opérateurs d'influence entre Moscou et le continent africain. En ce matin de début février, 200 personnes environ se retrouvent dans le jardin familial de Bibiana Wangari, à Mukurwe-Ini, dans le centre du Kenya, à un peu plus de 2h de route au nord de Nairobi. Ce sont des funérailles, mais la cérémonie se déroule sans corps et sans cercueil, constate Albane Thirouard, la correspondante de RFI. Des bougies ont été déposées sur une tombe symbolique en contrebas. Charles Waithaka, dit « Charlo », le fils de Bibiana, avait 30 ans. Parti en octobre en Russie, sa famille a perdu le contact vers Noël, et c'est sur Facebook que sa mère a appris son décès en Ukraine : « Je me suis réveillée un jour et la nouvelle était partout sur les réseaux sociaux. J'ai appris qu'il avait marché sur une mine. Avant de partir, il m'avait appelée pour me dire qu'il avait obtenu un emploi pour travailler en tant que mécanicien pour la construction d'un camp militaire. Une fois sur place, il m'a appelée pour me dire qu'il était en Russie. On a continué à parler, jusqu'au jour où il m'a dit qu'il allait être déployé sur le front. Il a pleuré, beaucoup pleuré. En tant que mère, ce n'était pas facile. Les présents lui rendent hommage. Un homme prend le micro, il vient de rentrer du front. « J'ai eu la chance de rentrer à la maison, témoigne Dancan. J'aurais pu finir comme ça. J'ai vu la mort de mes propres yeux. Je sais que ce n'est pas facile, vu comment la guerre se déroule là-bas : les gens meurent, et quand une personne meurt, le corps est juste laissé là, personne ne s'en occupe ». Dancan détaille son expérience : « J'ai l'impression d'avoir été trompé. Je suis allé là-bas, je pensais travailler comme chauffeur. Une fois arrivé, on m'a donné une formation militaire. Et même quand tu dis que tu ne veux pas faire ce travail et que tu veux rentrer chez toi, on te force à aller au front. Les Russes n'ont aucune humanité. Alors j'ai fait semblant d'être fou, on m'a envoyé à l'hôpital, et c'est comme ça que j'ai pu m'échapper. Mais je sais que beaucoup de Kényans sont encore là-bas. Ils cherchent des moyens d'en sortir et de rentrer chez eux mais ce n'est pas facile, c'est même très difficile. » Dancan affirme par ailleurs ne jamais avoir touché l'argent promis. « Il ne savait pas où il était exactement mais qu'il était au cœur de la guerre avec l'Ukraine » À plusieurs milliers de kilomètres de là, Mike – un nom d'emprunt – laisse un message vocal à RFI : « On est venu ici pour travailler, on nous avait dit que ce serait un travail dans la sécurité. Une fois arrivés en Russie, on s'est rendu compte que c'était un emploi militaire. Nous n'avions rien signé au Kenya, les recruteurs ont juste pris nos passeports pour arranger le visa et les billets d'avion. Ce n'est qu'une fois en Russie que nous avons signé des papiers mais tout était en russe donc nous ne comprenions pas. Nous les avons scannés avec nos téléphones et c'est là que nous avons compris que les documents que nous nous apprêtions à signer étaient des contrats dans l'armée. On attend. Ils vont nous emmener combattre. Mon ami et moi refusons d'y aller, nous cherchons à nous échapper. » Quelques jours plus tard, Mike prévient : il est parvenu à fuir et à quitter la Russie. Julius Kimani Kamanu est venu accompagné de son père pour évoquer le cas de son frère, âgé de 26 ans, parti en Russie il y a plusieurs mois. Sur le téléphone de Julius, il y a une photo : trois hommes armés posant en tenue de combat. « C'est la dernière photo qu'il nous a envoyée, le dernier jour où nous avons pu communiquer avec lui, souligne Julius Kimani Kamanu. Il y a mon frère, Peter Kimemia, un homme que je ne connais pas qui est sûrement russe, et l'ami avec qui mon frère est parti. Il nous a dit qu'il partait pour un emploi de chauffeur donc quand nous l'avons vu comme ça en tenue militaire, ça nous a choqués ». Peter Kimemia Kamanu est parti en Russie avec un visa de visiteur, avec un billet d'avion aller-retour, pour un séjour de quelques jours à peine. Lui aussi a été trompé, affirme Julius : « L'agent lui avait dit qu'il allait travailler comme chauffeur en Russie. Avant de partir, mon frère vendait des téléphones et des ordinateurs. On lui avait promis un meilleur emploi en Russie avec un bon salaire. Il est arrivé en Russie le 22 octobre 2025 et il nous a informés qu'il était dans un hôtel en attendant plus d'informations. Quelques jours plus tard, il nous a informés qu'il avait été emmené dans un camp militaire et qu'il allait y recevoir une formation, puisque le travail de chauffeur se ferait dans un camp militaire. Donc, il a commencé sa formation militaire qui a duré moins d'une semaine. Puis, un jour, il nous a appelés à minuit, il était terrorisé. Il nous a dit qu'il ne savait pas où il était exactement mais qu'il était au cœur de la guerre avec l'Ukraine. C'était notre dernière communication, le 18 novembre. » Julius affirme que le numéro de l'agent avec lequel son frère communiquait n'est plus joignable. La famille a écrit aux autorités kényanes pour obtenir des nouvelles mais la demande n'a pas abouti. Les estimations du nombre de Kényans partis en Russie ne cessent de gonfler ces dernières semaines. Mi-février, le gouvernement a haussé le ton. Le ministre des Affaires étrangères a promis de se rendre à Moscou pour « enrayer » ce phénomène, alors que son bras droit dénonçait auprès des médias « un schéma inacceptable consistant à attirer des gens et à les faire mourir ». La fille de l'ex-président Jacob Zuma est visée par une enquête judiciaire pour son rôle dans l'envoi de 17 combattants sud-africains. Elle a dû démissionner de son poste de députée. Je suis venu en Russie parce que je n'avais pas de travail et que Duduzile Zuma [la fille de Jacob Zuma, NDLR], nous avait promis des emplois. Tout n'était que mensonges. Nous nous sommes retrouvés à nous entraîner à l'attaque, à utiliser des bombes et à creuser des abris, des toilettes, à manger de la nourriture avariée et périmée. Parfois, ils nous donnaient des coups de pied quand ils nous trouvaient en train de dormir et ils se moquaient que nous tombions malades. Il n'y avait pas de jours de repos. Ensuite, nous sommes partis vers le front et notre groupe a été séparé. Je ne sais pas où sont les autres. Nos familles et nos enfants nous manquent vraiment. C'est très douloureux : aidez-nous à rentrer chez nous, s'il vous plaît. » L'affaire fait grand bruit dans un pays membre des Brics où les partis russophiles MK ou EFF sont bien implantés au parlement. Au point que l'actuel chef de l'État, Cyril Ramaphosa, a téléphoné à Vladimir Poutine pour obtenir leurs rapatriements il y a quelques jours. Saluant les « convergences de valeurs » russo-africaines, il explique accompagner certains vers un recrutement dans l'armée : « Cette rémunération, elle est alléchante. Il y a une batterie de documents qui vous sont présentés. Vous avez la possibilité de lire ces documents, de les faire traduire, on ne peut pas vous enrôler de force dans l'armée. C'est un contrat où on vous dit combien vous serez payés, combien de temps vous devez servir, et quels sont les avantages que vous aurez et ainsi de suite. Si vous êtes d'accord vous signez, si vous n'êtes pas d'accord vous ne signez pas. Mais avant d'arriver à ce niveau, il y a déjà une présélection. On vérifie votre état et l'agent de recrutement décide si oui ou non vous êtes recruté, ce n'est pas automatique. Néanmoins, il est important de préciser qu'il y a des personnes, qui ne sont pas des Russes pour la plupart, qui vont se servir de la détresse de leurs frères africains, pour leur faire miroiter des choses qui parfois n'ont absolument rien à voir avec la vérité, et peut-être d'une manière ou d'une autre les convaincre, ou les contraindre. » Certaines recrues, en revanche, sont tout à fait conscientes de leur choix. Les militaires ou anciens militaires sont notamment ciblés par le démarchage. Les salaires promis sont par exemple dix fois supérieurs à ceux de l'armée camerounaise. Un militaire du BIR, bataillon d'intervention rapide, unité d'élite, explique comment il a vu certains de ses frères d'armes céder aux sirènes russes, à commencer par son cousin... Il évoque même des complicités au sein de la hiérarchie : « Il m'a dit que c'est un colonel qui a géré, c'est par le réseau de ce colonel qu'il a voyagé. Après deux semaines, je n'avais plus de ses nouvelles, son numéro ne passait plus, et jusqu'à maintenant, rien. Quand je suis entré en contact avec un autre collègue qui était là-bas, il m'a fait comprendre que les Camerounais qui étaient arrivés à cette époque, en mars-avril-mai 2024, étaient tous morts, parce que les attaques étaient très intenses. J'ai essayé d'en parler avec la famille, mais ils ne voulaient rien entendre, alors j'ai lancé un appel sur les réseaux sociaux, voir si je pouvais le retrouver. Un gars m'a répondu qu'il n'était plus en vie. Sa famille a honte de dire qu'il est mort, alors ils le cachent aux gens. » « Plein d'Africaines vantent le programme » Mais le front n'est pas la seule voie de recrutement pour de jeunes Africains. Via des influenceurs très suivis, la Russie promeut le programme « Alabuga start », qui s'adresse à des jeunes femmes étrangères de 18 à 22 ans. Selon ses promoteurs, ce sont des formations de qualité, tout inclus, il n'y a que des avantages. Mais dans cette zone économique spéciale du Tatarstan, on monte des drones pour bombarder l'Ukraine, comme l'ont documenté plusieurs enquêtes. Certaines pratiques peuvent être assimilées à de la traite d'êtres humains, ont mis en garde les Nations unies. Ce type de contenus attire l'attention, par exemple de Rebecca : « J'ai vu ça sur TikTok, je me suis inscrite. J'ai donné mon identité, copie de mon passeport. » Aide-soignante ivoirienne, elle a expliqué à Benoit Almeras, notre correspondant à Abidjan, avoir candidaté après avoir vu sur les réseaux « plein d'Africaines vanter le programme, le logement inclus, les avantages, la possibilité de rester en Russie ou de rentrer avec le certificat. Elles disent qu'elles sont bien à l'aise ». Des jeunes femmes comme Rebecca, il y en a des dizaines à Abidjan, attirées par la promesse d'une formation gratuite à l'étranger. La Russie prend le contre-pied de l'Europe où les démarches d'expatriation sont de plus en plus difficiles, et où le discours xénophobe s'impose.
