Johnny KellyHe was a mailman, mechanic and almost a cop until music took priority against the wishes of his mother (and to the delight of his rocker Dad). Drummer Johnny Kelly joins us to discuss his latest project, Sun Dont Shine, his early years with Andrew “Dice” Clay (say what?), success with Type O Negative, including tours with Nine Inch Nails (dismal) and Motley Crue (better), plus his ongoing gig with Quiet Riot. This might be one of our favorite episodes and not just because he got to tell his Mom, “I'm going out with Hookers & Blow.”Created and Produced by Jared Tuten

Interview by Kris PetersHe may have been taken from us far too soon, but the legacy and memory of guitar great Randy Rhoads will live forever. Rhoads' name is revered in the music world, where, for a period from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, his playing and presence left a shadow of brilliance that is as strong today as it was back then. The virtuoso guitarist, who co-founded Quiet Riot and propelled Ozzy Osbourne's solo career with Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981), remains one of heavy metal's most important figures. Before his untimely death in 1982 at just 25, Rhoads redefined guitar-driven rock, blending classical influences with blistering metal to pioneer the neoclassical metal subgenre. His iconic riffs, featured in timeless songs such as Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and innovative techniques, including two-handed tapping, vibrato bar dive bombs, and intricate scales, set a new standard for the 80s metal scene and inspired countless guitarists.Recognised with a 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rhoads' legacy endures as a cornerstone of heavy metal evolution, with his signature Jackson Rhoads guitar symbolizing his revolutionary impact. To most of this current generation and beyond, the life and music of Randy Rhoads will always be that of past reflection, unable to bear witness to the great man on stage with precious little preserved on camera or film. But this December, thanks to XMusic, fans can get as close to the glory days of guitar as possible when A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS - The Stories and Music Behind the Legend - hits this country for a performance that includes live renditions of Rhoads' finest moments as well as an in-depth Q&A session. This is more than just a tribute performance, with Rhoads' long-time friend, confidant and co-founder of Quiet Riot, Kelly Garni, heading the evening alongside Rhoads' first-ever guitar teacher, Scott Shelley. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Randy Rhoads - a true guitar legend - whose influence still resonates in every power chord and soaring solo played today. HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Garni ahead of the tour, and among the topics of conversation was the sheer magnitude of putting together and the need for a performance of this scale."I don't pursue these things," he stressed. "People come to me, and they ask me to do them. There's a very, very large fan base for Randy Rhoads, and pretty much I'm the last man standing (laughs). Of course, I don't have Kevin (Dubrow, vocalist), who I sure do miss. Although if you read my book, you wouldn't believe that in a million years, but boy do I miss him. He was a great, great guide for me, and I learned a real lot from Kevin. But anyway, I've been approached several times, and I've been all around the country over the last few years here in America, and now Japan twice. People want anything left of Randy, and I guess I'm what you get. It's an honour to represent my best friend. Of course, anybody would do that for their best friend, if they're any kind of a friend. And so, since people are so excited to hear that music again, I happily oblige and go and do these shows."Garni had many tales to tell, among them how Alice Cooper shaped much of what was to eventually become the sound of Quiet Riot, albeit without having ever met the two impressionable youths."When we saw Cooper, we said we're gonna be rock stars, whether anybody likes it or not," he smiled. "And you know, in my mind, Randy did, but I never really did. And I never really wanted to. And that's okay because things had changed over the years to where I didn't want to be in the music business any more, but because of my association with Randy, I find myself very heavily involved (laughs). And I gotta say, to see and meet all the fans who come to these shows is really, really something that makes you feel good in your heart and your soul."In the full interview, Kelly addressed the excitement among fans and the importance of celebrating Rhoads' legacy, highlighting the involvement of key figures from Randy's early career to enhance the authenticity of the tribute. He spoke about the rest of the band, including musicians from Snake Bite Whiskey and the Van Halen tribute band Van Hager, along with a Q&A session featuring Scott Shelley, Randy's first guitar teacher. We spoke about the Q&A session and the personal nature of the questions and how emotional it could get.Reflecting on his and Randy's musical journeys, Kelly shared insights into their early influences and the challenges they faced, including Randy's struggles with confidence and vocal abilities. He recounted the band's evolution, including a misguided image overhaul that led them to adopt a look that felt disconnected from their original sound. We also spoke about important moments of Randy's life and the impression he left on others, including Kelly, the ever-lasting legacy left behind by his untimely death and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

From presidential hopeful to criminal with an electronic tag, Marine Le Pen's fall from grace has been swift and – at least as far her punishment is concerned – eye-popping. Quiet Riot producer Kenny Campbell is joined by our favourite Chevalier/French expert, Olivier Morel who, as well as being a partner at Cripps lawyers, holds senior trade positions and is a champion of Anglo-French business links. How did this all start? What does it mean for France? Is it good or bad news for Le Pen's party, and the ambitious individuals within? Pop open le popcorn and enjoy a bit of political drama from the other side of La Manche. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** ALEX ANDREOU'S PODYSSEY can be found here: APPLE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alex-andreous-podyssey/id1798575126 SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/2x7cD3HjkOyOKTF4YT5Goy?si=e7a86b762431451f AMAZON MUSIC: https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/8c996062-ef8d-42e4-9d80-5b407cb6e2e2/alex-andreou's-podyssey OVERCAST: https://overcast.fm/+ABN4Gd7AP9Q POCKET CASTS: https://pca.st/podcast/9e98d690-d812-013d-ea22-0affdfd67dbd YouTube Music: Coming Soon Or you can add it to any app, using the RSS feed: https://feeds.megaphone.fm/podyssey SUBSCRIBE OR FOLLOW NOW! Reading Quiet Riot Sharing actor and singer, Zendaya's shyness story from my new book Quiet Riot.
With pollution out of control, infrastructure at breaking point and water companies prioritising the pumping of pounds – many pounds – to shareholders, our water industry has dissolved into a murky mess. Our seas and rivers are a disgrace, the National Audit Office has warned some areas could run out of water by 2034, and Britain's biggest water company is begging for a Government bailout, after years of loading up with debt to help it pay out juicy dividends. In this Quiet Riot special, our producer Kenny Campbell takes a deep dive into the issues and possible solutions to the water crisis with Norwich South MP Clive Lewis, whose Private Member's Bill on the subject will be debated this week. It's a topic that vexes our listeners – we know, because it's listeners who suggested we look into the scandalous state of affairs the water industry finds itself in. How did we get into this dreadful situation? What can we do about it? How did Labour MP Clive Lewis find himself buttonholed by Richard Tice only to find the Reform MP was in agreement about the state of water companies? And how are Trumpian politics linked to what is going on in the industry? If you swim, paddle or drink water, then this is a must-listen episode. SHOW LINKS Visit the Clive Lewis Action Network for more details on the work he is doing on Britain's broken water industry – and please drop your MP a letter this week, urging them to attend the imminent debate on Clive's bill. The Rivers Trust has an interactive map of sewage spills in England here – it's pretty up-to-date and utterly shocking. The trust also has links for those seeking Scottish and Welsh data. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** ALEX ANDREOU'S PODYSSEY can be found here: APPLE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alex-andreous-podyssey/id1798575126 SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/2x7cD3HjkOyOKTF4YT5Goy?si=e7a86b762431451f AMAZON MUSIC: https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/8c996062-ef8d-42e4-9d80-5b407cb6e2e2/alex-andreou's-podyssey OVERCAST: https://overcast.fm/+ABN4Gd7AP9Q POCKET CASTS: https://pca.st/podcast/9e98d690-d812-013d-ea22-0affdfd67dbd YouTube Music: Coming Soon Or you can add it to any app, using the RSS feed: https://feeds.megaphone.fm/podyssey SUBSCRIBE OR FOLLOW NOW Our bookshop selling many of the books we have featured can be found at uk.bookshop.org/shop/quietriot. Interview by Kris PetersWith the modern world embracing technology like never before, it was only a matter of time before the metal scene and metal music became caught up in its web. Don't get me wrong, technology and the wonders of modern advancement have long been a part of the music industry - everywhere from live sound to studio tricks to programmed drums - but it is the concept of AI that has been more divisive and controversial than anything else. But it has always been inevitable. Like it or loathe it, AI is not only here, it is also integrating into more of life and music than some of us care to admit.Until now, heavy metal has been unchartered territory for anything AI-generated. Musically there have been many advancements but when it came time to replicating hard rock/metal vocals the challenge seemed to always be insurmountable. But not any more.In conjunction with AI vocal synthesis company Eclipsed Sounds, Seann Nicols (Westfield Massacre, Adler's Appetite, Quiet Riot) has been working on something new and exciting called HXVOC, the first-ever AI rock/metal vocalist for Synthesizer V Studio 2. This is an entirely new technology that allows producers to generate fully realistic rock and metal vocals, complete with rasp, grit, and even full-on screams.HXVOC is a first-of-its-kind AI vocal instrument that gives musicians and producers unprecedented access to a professional rock/metal vocalist without needing a real singer. It's powered by Synthesizer V Studio 2, the most advanced vocal synthesis engine available today. The key breakthrough is that HXVOC can accurately perform aggressive rock and metal vocal techniques, including rasp, grit, belting, growls, and screams—which have never been done at this level in a vocal synth before.Rather than replacing singers, HXVOC is an instrument for musicians - just like drum machines and amp sims. It empowers producers, bands, and solo artists by letting them create fully produced songs with high-quality rock vocals. This is a major first for the vocal synthesis world, and it's already making waves. Two official showcase videos have been released, original songs demonstrating HXVOC's capabilities in both a Sleep Token - style track and a modern rock song created specifically to highlight its vocal modes. This technology is about to change music production in a big way, especially for rock and metal. Now, any producer in the world can access a professional-quality rock vocal without needing to record a singer. With AI-powered vocals becoming more advanced, this could be a turning point for the industry.A known and respected hard rock/metal vocalist, Nicols has approached things from the perspective of a working musician and is adamant HXVOC will only benefit the music industry, not destroy it. HEAVY sat down with him for a chat to find out more about HXVOC and ask a few questions that we think may pose a concern."It's got a lot of moving parts," he began. "And I'm new to the space, so I'm by no means an expert. But I'll give you the best to my knowledge. Basically, AI vocal synths have existed for a long time. Apparently this has been like 25 years in the making. I guess it started with a thing called Vocaloid, which is a company that Yamaha founded. And it started out as a Japanese-based company, and they did like a lot of anime, and it went into pop and electronic. And that's mainly where the AI voices have found most of their traction. But to get a voice that worked for rock was really hard and challenging. Because they couldn't get the grit, they couldn't get the… they couldn't get the aggression to come out of the voice. It just sounded very robotic, and they could produce clean tones, but they couldn't produce that like guttural, like raw that you need for rock, right? So basically this is the first time that we've had those intense techniques captured and reproduced with an AI. And it took us about, well, two years in development. And it was actually just a meeting of technology and the engineering behind it and the team and the training and special techniques that all had to go into capturing and being able to create this voice that people can get like a real rock metal vocalist right out of the computer with the AI."We hit him with the question many are wanting to know: Is HXVOC designed to actually replace a vocalist in a band?"Not at all," he stressed. "No. It's an instrument. It's not a replacement. And I realize that's a concern, but, you know, I was toying around with this technology for a long time. I mean, it started with drums, and then it turned out you could do your drums and program your bass, and then they created guitars and synthesizers, and there's orchestral libraries and everything. And this is just an extension of that, but now for the human voice. And now when we listen to demos that are made by musicians on their computers, the drums sound pretty killer. And it's because of guys like Stephen Slate that made the really complicated process of recording drums in a big studio, and you need all these microphones and these crazy consoles and engineers. I mean, it's super complicated to get a good drum sound, but he just made it so it was really easy so you could just load it up on your computer put your beats in and voila it's like sounds like it was recorded in a million dollar studio and uh that's what we've done essentially with a rock voice now."In the full interview, we engaged in a detailed discussion about the evolving role of technology in the music industry, particularly focusing on Seann's collaboration with Eclipse Sounds and the introduction of their AI vocal instrument, HXVOC. Seann emphasized the potential of AI vocal technology to enhance songwriting and studio work, viewing it as a valuable tool rather than a threat to jobs in the industry.Seann elaborated on the capabilities of HXVOC, highlighting its ability to capture the nuances of rock and metal vocal techniques, which have historically been challenging to record. He reassured that the software is intended as an instrument to empower musicians rather than replace live vocalists. We addressed some of the concerns that invariably come with new innovations, his role in HXVOC, how it will benefit the heavy metal industry and plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Longtime Flopcast listeners (those poor souls) know that every 100 episodes, we celebrate V66, Boston's own music video TV channel of the mid-80s. This time, however, we have a special guest: Eric Green, director of the V66 documentary, Life on the V! And because this is episode 666, we're looking at the heavy metal and hard rock bands and videos of the V66 era. It was a time when catchy melodies and goofy visuals helped acts like Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister score huge Top 40 hits. The Kiss guys lost the makeup, Van Halen switched from Dave to Sammy, Aerosmith made their (rap-assisted) comeback, Mötley Crüe freaked everybody out, and Bon Jovi opened the floodgates for a cacophony of hair metal. Meanwhile on the local scene, V66 promoted a video filmed at a Boston-area high school by an unknown hard rock band called Extreme. And as the New England Patriots prepared for Super Bowl 1986, V66 was there with a couple of low budget quickie music videos, including the goofy metal tune "Skin the Bears." (Spoiler: The Patriots absolutely did not skin the Bears.) Also: Kevin finds V66 VJ David O'Leary at a Taylor Dayne show! Eric traces the history of Nirvana in Boston! Jizzy Pearl has been a force in hard rock for decades, and he's not slowing down. His latest album, Punk Rock Fiesta, brings together his signature raw vocals, punchy riffs, and a touch of punk energy. At the same time, he's hitting the road for the Blackout in the Red Room tour, celebrating Love/Hate's classic debut album. Fans can expect a mix of new material and the songs that made the band a cult favorite in the early ‘90s. Love/Hate first made waves in 1990 with Blackout in the Red Room, an album that stood out from the glam rock crowd with its attitude, grit, and groove-heavy sound. Tracks like Why Do You Think They Call It Dope? earned them critical praise and a devoted following. While they didn't reach mainstream superstardom, the band built a reputation for energetic live shows and a no-nonsense approach to rock ‘n' roll. As music trends shifted, Love/Hate struggled to maintain their early momentum, but Pearl kept going. Over the years, he's fronted bands like L.A. Guns, Ratt, and Quiet Riot, bringing his unmistakable voice to different audiences. Despite lineup changes and industry challenges, he's always stayed true to the hard rock sound that first put him on the map. With Punk Rock Fiesta, Pearl delivers an album that feels both fresh and familiar. It blends punk influences with his hard rock roots, showing that he's still got plenty of fire left. Meanwhile, the Blackout in the Red Room tour is a chance for longtime fans to relive the energy of Love/Hate's early days while introducing a new generation to their music. Through it all, Jizzy Pearl remains dedicated to rock ‘n' roll. Whether recording new music or performing classic songs, he continues to prove why he's one of the most enduring frontmen in the scene. With his latest album and tour, he's keeping the spirit of Love/Hate alive while forging ahead with his own brand of hard-hitting, honest rock. https://www.youtube.com/@JPearlTV https://www.facebook.com/jizzypearlofficial/ https://www.instagram.com/jizzypearlofficial/?hl=en

Hair Metal: The Soundtrack of Suburban Rebellion The term "hair metal" is often loaded with contradictory emotions. For some, it carries a pejorative tone, evoking images of overproduced, superficial music that prioritized style over substance. For others, it symbolizes a golden era of hedonism and carefree excess—a nostalgic portal to the cultural climate of the 1980s. Whether you're a Gen X'er reliving the glory years of 1981-1987 or a Gen Z'er discovering the era's flamboyant spectacle for the first time, hair metal offers an intriguing entry into a bygone cultural zeitgeist. Origins and Influences: A Hybrid of Excess Hair metal is best understood as an amalgamation of diverse influences: the shock rock theatrics of Alice Cooper and KISS, the virtuosic intensity of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), and the pop hooks reminiscent of 70s classic rock. The genre's genesis can be traced to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, amid the decline of hardcore punk and new wave. Unlike the disaffected rebellion of punk or the cerebral stylings of new wave, hair metal embraced a more commercial, hedonistic ethos that resonated with suburban youth. Key Players and Early Success Van Halen's meteoric rise in the late 70s, driven by Eddie Van Halen's guitar innovation and David Lee Roth's charismatic theatrics, laid much of the groundwork. Yet, it was Quiet Riot that first achieved mainstream success with 1983's Metal Health, the first metal album to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Their cover of Slade's “Cum on Feel the Noize” exemplified the blend of hard rock bombast and pop sensibility that defined the genre. Simultaneously, Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz (1980) featuring Randy Rhoads, redefined what metal could be—dark and heavy, but also catchy and accessible. This formula of blending metal's aggression with pop hooks became the template for hair metal's commercial domination. The Cultural Politics of Hair Metal Unlike punk's overt challenge to conservative politics, hair metal offered rebellion as a commodified spectacle. It was less about collective resistance to authority and more about personal indulgence. The Reagan and Thatcher years saw the rise of neoliberal individualism, and hair metal became the soundtrack to this ethos: drugs, sex, and flashy excess. Bands like Mötley Crüe, with albums such as Shout at the Devil (1983), exemplified this aesthetic, blending occult imagery with glam decadence. However, by the late 80s, the genre began to cannibalize itself. Bands influenced by early hair metal—such as Poison—were producing sanitized versions of the form. By 1988, hair metal had become a bloated commercial enterprise. Simultaneously, the rise of bands like Guns N' Roses and Faster Pussycat, who rejected the cartoonish glam aesthetic, signaled a shift. Mötley Crüe's 1987 album Girls, Girls, Girls symbolized this transition—gone were the lace and makeup, replaced by leather and a grittier image. The Decline: From Cultural Dominance to Nostalgia The genre's decline was swift, for many hastened by the rise of grunge and alternative rock in the early 90s. While I don't discount the raw authenticity of bands like Nirvana, and how it stood in stark contrast to the excesses of hair metal; By 1987 most of the “hair metal” songs were pop music with distorted guitars. Def Leppard's 1983 Pyromania was to be their “Thriller”. This was less an authentic genre, and more a media moniker, and everyone with a Marshall stack and hair spray wanted to use that moniker to get in the business. By the early 90s, the genre was relegated to nostalgia tours and retro compilations, a relic of a pre-grunge world. Mötley Crüe playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AYeS0yG88ymhk7Lrb09Kr... October 1985: hair was big, riffs were bigger, and rock was veering toward an electrified blend of glam, grit, and decadence. Metalheads and rock fans everywhere were tuning in to MTV, where every week, a new video was promised to capture their attention. This era was when albums weren't just records; they were statements dripping with attitude and energy. Bands like Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Mötley Crüe were heating the charts, and fans were hungry for high-energy anthems to keep the adrenaline pumping. Into this scene dropped Midnite Dynamite, the third album from Maryland rockers KIX, an underdog act grinding it out in clubs with a mix of hard rock bravado and glam-metal flash. For KIX, this was a make-or-break moment, a chance to pull up from the underground and make their mark with a record that didn't just play to the rock crowd but demanded attention.Building to a Big BreakKIX had been around since the early 80s, putting out two albums and gaining a reputation for their high-energy performances and raw sound. They were a staple on the Maryland rock circuit, where fans recognized their signature mix of tight musicianship, outrageous on-stage antics, and the ability to turn a live show into a real experience. Despite the grind, KIX hadn't yet found a breakout record that would push them to national attention. That's where Midnite Dynamite comes in—this album was set to be a game-changer, and the band knew it had to deliver.Enter Bob Halligan Jr.: The Songwriter Who Got KixWhen it came time to make Midnite Dynamite, KIX partnered with songwriter Bob Halligan Jr., a musician with a gift for digging into a band's core and translating it into unforgettable tracks. Halligan's resume included writing credits with Judas Priest, so he knew a thing or two about blending melody with the heaviness that KIX needed to reach new fans. Initially, Halligan admitted he thought they'd meant KISS when he heard the name “KIX.” But once he met the band, the creative spark was instant, especially with bassist and primary songwriter Donnie Purnell. The Dynamic Duo: Halligan and PurnellDonnie Purnell was the force behind KIX's sound, with a drive to keep each song fresh and meaningful. Together, Purnell and Halligan struck a balance, crafting lyrics and riffs that stood out from the era's typical glam-rock fare. Halligan brought in elements that polished KIX's raw power without taking away the band's edge. With a focus on memorable choruses and punchy lyrics, their collaborative magic helped produce songs that would resonate long after the first listen. For Halligan and Purnell, Midnite Dynamite wasn't about writing cliché rock songs—it was about giving the audience something they hadn't heard before. Tracks like “Walking Away” became anthems for teens going through the highs and lows of young love, while “Sex” offered a tongue-in-cheek take on rock's fascination with romance. Instead of glamorizing indulgence, KIX's songs had humor and perspective that elevated them above the typical fare of the day.One of the things that makes Midnite Dynamite stand out is its dynamic range. The album plays with tempo and mood, jumping from high-energy riffs to introspective moments, keeping listeners on their toes. Lead singer Steve Whiteman's vocals add to this dynamic, often hitting octaves higher than the songs were initially written for, adding an electrifying edge to each track. Halligan also brought a production approach similar to Def Leppard, using digital drums to layer the sound and make the album feel slick without losing its rawness. The Legacy of Midnight Dynamite: An Underdog ClassicNearly 40 years after its release, Midnite Dynamite remains a cult classic, especially for fans who were there in the golden era of 80s rock. It's an album that captures everything we love about the era—huge riffs, clever lyrics, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of rock without losing its soul. For KIX, this album marked a turning point and solidified their place in rock history. If you're feeling nostalgic or want to experience the thrill of 80s hard rock, give Midnite Dynamite a spin. Whether you're an old fan or discovering KIX for the first time, this record captures the rebellious, energetic spirit of an era that rocked music to its core.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Midnite Dynamite * 24:36 - Cold Shower * 34:44 - Here She Comes Again (Night Ranger) * 46:11 - Don't Close Your Eyes * 52:20 - Walkin Away * 1:09:11 - Scarlet Fever * Outro - Bang Bang (Balls of Fire)Make Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. https://youtube.com/live/K6y4OeQAJWE Striped Frankenstein Relic, RBW Guitar - http://sweetwater.sjv.io/eKk5jZ Please note : the above is an affiliate link and helps support the show! By 1983, all-day rock festivals were nothing new in the U.S., with iconic events like California Jam, Texxas Jam, Day on the Green, Monterey Pop Festival, and Woodstock drawing massive crowds. However, a full-day festival dedicated entirely to heavy metal hadn't yet taken place on American soil. Across the Atlantic, the UK had already hosted a few Monsters of Rock Festivals at Castle Donington, spotlighting headbanger favorites like Rainbow, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Scorpions, and Blue Öyster Cult. Taking inspiration from these, the organizers of the second US Festival, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and promoter Bill Graham, made a brilliant decision: they dedicated Sunday, May 29th, 1983, exclusively to heavy metal fans. The lineup was a metalhead's dream: Van Halen headlined, with Scorpions, Triumph, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne as support. The festival also gave a platform to then-up-and-comers Mötley Crüe and Quiet Riot. Interestingly, Joe Walsh was initially slated to perform that day but was moved to "Rock Day," headlined by David Bowie, on May 30th. To get Van Halen to pause work on their upcoming album—the now-legendary 1984—the organizers had to offer a hefty paycheck. And hefty it was: Van Halen reportedly received $1.5 million for their two-hour set, an unheard-of sum at the time. Not only that, but Van Halen went all out backstage. According to Pete Angelus, a key collaborator on the band's music videos and stage lighting, David Lee Roth decided to spend a significant portion of their payment creating a lavish backstage compound. "Dave thought it'd be a great idea to take a substantial chunk of that money and build a 'backstage compound' where he could hang out for five days before the event," Angelus shared in the 2011 book MTV Ruled the World: The Early Years of Music Video. "He had his friends out there, different trailers, and even dancers flown in from strip clubs." Angelus also recalled filming a short, staged documentary a month before the festival to depict the wild happenings in the compound. Despite the fun, the extended partying seemed to catch up with Roth. "An hour before they were set to go on, I noticed that five days of partying had caught up with Dave. He was a little shaky, but he was just enjoying himself," Angelus laughed. While Roth may not have been at 100%, Van Halen still delivered. Watching footage of their US Festival performance today, you can see Roth occasionally flub a line, but the band's energy and party vibe were unmatched. Last episode, you heard the thrilling, incredible rock n' roll stories of the Hollywood Stars' Scott Phares and Jeff Jourard. This week, we conclude our epic conversation by revealing each of our Top 5 LA Albums! The Hollywood Stars were THE "It Band" on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Originally concocted by legendary Hollywood impresario and cult figure Kim Fowley to be LA's answer to New York Dolls, the Stars' mix of glammed-up hard rock and pop hooks made them mainstays at clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. Bands like Journey, the Runaways, and Quiet Riot opened for them. Iggy Pop joined them on stage. John Lennon attended their performances. Their songs were covered by Alice Cooper ('Escape') and KISS ('King of the Night Time World'). Every major label wanted to sign them, eventually recording a debut album in 1974 for Columbia with Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk. But fate had other plans for the Hollywood Stars...a shake up at Columbia's west coast division led to the band being dropped before the album was released (and would remain that way until 2013, when Shine Like A Radio: The Great Lost 1974 Album surfaced), and the original incarnation of the band broke up. The remnants of the band would finally release an eponymous debut album for Arista in 1977, but that was effectively the end of the Hollywood Stars' story...until now. Following the success of their archival release, the band would get back together in 2018 for live shows and new recordings, with original lead vocalist Scott Phares returning to the fold. Their brand new 2024 album, Starstruck, finds the band in fine, rockin' form. The current version of the band also includes a veteran guitarist with more incredible rock n' roll stories to tell, Jeff Jourard. Jeff played with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers during the recording of their first album - the motorcycle jacket you see Petty wearing on the cover was Jeff's - but his departure from the band as they left for England meant that his sole credit on the record was a "Heartfelt Thanks." After that, Jeff teamed up with Martha Davis to form the Motels, co-writing their oft-covered classic 'Total Control.' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Live from the Chris Jericho Rock & Wrestling Rager At Sea Five Alive, it's American Idol (and TIJ) alum James Durbin, Fooz Fighters frontman Nick Rich, Guardians of the Jukebox & Fozzy founding guitarist Rich Ward, and Femme Halen guitarist Roseann Aldrete! The topic? Tribute bands! Hear why these stellar musicians LOVE their cover bands, and the lengths they go to convey the vibe, spirit, look and sound of their respective bands! James Durbin shares stories from the ultimate cover band experience, American Idol, what it was like fronting Quiet Riot, the advice he got from Judas Priest's Rob Halford, and why yacht rock is his favorite genre of music to cover. Rich Ward shares the secret to Guardians of the Jukebox's success, and explains how they put their 80s set list together. Femme Halen's Roseann Aldrete talks about all the studying and practice she does to get that Eddie Van Halen sound and tone down, her favorite EVH solos to play, and the most difficult songs for her in the Van Halen catalogue. And Nick Rich of the Fooz Fighters reveals why he gave up his Mick Jagger gig to take on the Dave Grohl role fulltime, how he manages to maintain that Grohl energy onstage, and why he felt it was important to grow out his hair and get the same arm tattoos as Dave.
