For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite claire rousay on the show! When I was developing this show last year, claire was one of the people I knew I wanted to have as a guest. With her excellent new album, “sentiment,” out on April 19 via Thrill Jockey, it was the perfect opportunity to bring her on the show. We talk about her connection with more eaze, what DJ Khaled's life must be like, the all-time greatness of Prince's “Dirty Mind,” Kath Bloom and Loren Connors making magic, the most cringe Myspace music there is, learning to love Elliot Smith, Mark Kozelek, how Young Thug is the greatest artist of the last 20 years, and so much more!Listen to all of claire's picks HEREclaire rousay “sentiment”claire's tour datesSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. A heady brew of dark, glitchy, head-messing wonder."It was introduced by Kate Arnold who writes the lyrics and provides the vocals. It's an extraordinary album! And our Luvva Cover is pretty special too! Mark Kozelek, aka Sun Kil Moon and leader of Red House Painters, is another extraordinary songwriter. Missed my Heart is a very strong song with a lyric telling the story of a murder from the point of view of the protagonist. While in Europe, Broderick met and worked with a wide variety of composers, singers, and songwriters including Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Laura Gibson, Yann Tiersen, Olafur Arnalds, and Lubomyr Melnyk.Broderick was by this time an in-demand session player, engineer, and producer, but kept up a steady stream of his own work on EPs, singles, and film scores, and he accepted composition commissions for dance and the theater. Broderick provided half of many split recordings, including 2009's Blank Grey Canvas Sky with Machinefabriek, 2010's Apple Bobbing At ___ with Penelope Joy, and 2011's Glimmer with Takumi Uesaka. In 2010, Bella Union released his full-length How They Are. From 2010, Broderick's level of activity was matched only by the number of requests for his time from other artists. He contributed to 19 recordings in 2010, 12 in 2011 (including Oliveray's Wonders, one of his projects with Frahm), and ten more in 2012. He and Frahm also completed and released the first album of a three-year undertaking entitled http://www.itstartshear.com. (Interestingly, the artist withdrew from having any kind of social media account.) Broderick also issued the EP Two Songs for Banjo and Voice and the single "I Will Play This Song Once Again" b/w "These Walls of Mine" that year.Broderick was equally prolific in 2013. Among the ten recordings he contributed to were Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavalle's Perils from the Sea, Melnyk's Corollaries, and Nadja's Flipper. He also issued the Broderick & Broderick EP and the full-length Float: 2013 Addendum, and he scored director Rodney Evans' award-winning film The Happy Sad. The following year saw the artist move back to Portland for a time and play on recordings by Portland Cello Project, Aidan Baker, Sharon Van Etten, and Sean Flinn & the Royal We. Erased Tapes issued the Broderick and Haines split dub offering Greg Gives Peter Space, The Album Leaf (Featuring Peter Broderick) was self-released, and the eponymous Peter Broderick + Gabriel Saloman was issued by Beacon Sound. While Broderick played on over a dozen records by other artists in 2015, his own recording and touring activities were equally intense. He collaborated with French artist Félicia Atkinson as La Nuit to release Desert Television and issued the EPs X Luzern and COTN RMXD and the acclaimed full-length Colours of the Night. In 2016, Broderick cut the stripped-down piano-and-voice album Partners with Tucker Martine. (Inspired by John Cage's writings, it featured a reading of the composer's "In a Landscape.") He also produced Brigid Mae Power's acclaimed self-titled Tompkins Square debut album. The pair were married shortly thereafter and moved to Ireland. Broderick continued his productive work rate into 2017 with the release of All Together Again, which collected his commissioned works from the previous decade.https://www.peterbroderick.net/  New Music from East Forest! -"Possible" - the latest album  from East Forest - LISTEN ON YOUR FAVORITE STREAMING PLATFORM: Spotify / ApplePre-order the album on vinyl - limited edition - and check out the new Possible clothing: http://eastforest.org *** Support this free podcast by joining the East Forest COUNCIL on Patreon.  Monthly Zoom Council, Podcast exclusives, private Patreon live-stream ceremony, and more.  Check it out and a great way to support the podcast and directly support the work of East Forest! - http://patreon.com/eastforest *****Please rate Ten Laws w/East Forest on iTunes.  It helps us get the guests you want to hear.  ***Catch East Forest LIVE - Pledge your interest in the upcoming East Forest Ceremony Concert events this Spring/Summer 2021.  More info and join us at eastforest.org/tour Join the newsletter and be part of the East Forest Community. Listen to East Forest guided meditations on Spotify & Apple Check out the East Forest x Ram Dass album on (Spotify & Apple) + East Forest's Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner 5hr album (Spotify & Apple). Stay in the East Forest flow:Mothership:  http://eastforest.org/IG:  https://www.instagram.com/eastforest/FB:  https://www.facebook.com/EastForestMusic/TW:  https://twitter.com/eastforestmusicPATREON: http://patreon.com/eastforest

Looking for inspiration to write a song? Hear how the pandemic has sparked something good. New projects have been unearthed. Could you turn a bedroom into a recording studio? Yes! We discuss being in a band versus solo work and the unfolding of Corrina's voice through time. Plus! Corrina takes beautiful photos and succumbed to the demand for people begging for her photos and has begun creating unique gift packs to share her photography with you. Listen in for inspiration. Maybe there is some new way you could share your work with the world this year? Corrina Repp captivates with her music, crafting enchanting songscapes that activate all your senses. She plays the electric guitar and is a singer/songwriter unlike any other. She is an actress who was featured in 8 Portlandia episodes, and several independent films and she is a phenomenal photographer and wonderful person to be around. A little bio about her from www.allmusic.com. Written by Katherin Fulton“Specializing in sparse, fragile songs that favor the electric guitar, singer/songwriter Corrina Repp emerged from the music scene of Portland, Oregon in the late '90s. After releasing her fourth album, 2006's The Absent and the Distant, she focused on the indie rock band Tu Fawning (2007-2012) before reviving her solo career with The Pattern of Electricity in 2015. Repp has also acted in films and on television, including a recurring role on IFC's Portlandia.Settling in the Pacific Northwest after frequent childhood relocations, Repp began her career as a musician thanks to a part-time job. While selling band merchandise online, she connected with the Decemberists, who were so impressed by her songs that they recommended her to Hush Records. The label released her debut album, A Boat Called Hope, in 1998. The CD-R EP The Other of Mud materialized a year later. Repp followed up with the albums I Take on Your Days in 2001 and It's Only the Future in 2004, both on Hush. After touring with the Decemberists, M. Ward, and Cat Power, among others, Repp released The Absent and the Distant on Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label in 2006. Putting her solo career on hold, Repp and musician Joe Haege formed the band Tu Fawning with Toussaint Perrault and Liza Reitz in 2007. They released a pair of albums for the City Slang label (2010's Hearts on Hold and 2012's A Monument) and toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. After Tu Fawning disbanded in late 2012, Repp took on several acting roles in small independent films and appeared on multiple episodes of the popular Portland-based sketch-comedy show Portlandia. In 2015, she resumed her solo career with her fifth LP, The Pattern of Electricity. It arrived via Caldo Verde. A joint release between sonaBLAST! and Jealous Butcher Records, How a Fantasy Will Kill Us All, followed in 2018.” -https://www.allmusic.com/artist/corrina-repp-mn0000123043/biographyOOh, and I’m shifting the format of the podcast a little and offering you about half the episode here for the general public. In Music Hell's first "very special" episode and our first look at a non-music medium, Mack and August read the funniest segments from Pitchfork Media's review of the 2001 album "Kid A" by Radiohead, examine how the author's bizarre fixation on Radiohead led to his own falling out with the company, and dive into some of Pitchfork's lowest reviews that effectively ended the careers of some independent artists. Now that's edu-tainment! Rate, review, and subscribe if you like the way we 'cast. Tell a friend, make a post about us, send an email to MusicHellPod@gmail.com, call your mom. EDIT: In the time between our recording of this episode and its release, it was been reported that Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon has done some heinous things and is 100% deserving of being cancelled. He's a bad person who doesn't deserve to be defended at all. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/music-hell/message

In 2013, Mark's second cousin, Carissa, died tragically prompting him to come back home to Ohio to attend the funeral. While processing everything back home, Mark really dove into his most intimate memories, about loved ones come and gone, as well as somber thoughts on his mother and father. Peter Broderick is a prolific, genre-defying American musician, composer, and producer. He is known internationally for a diverse range of solo projects, collaborations, and compositions for cinema and dance. A gifted multi-instrumentalist who is equally versed in a wide range of styles, Broderick's extensive discography -- on a range of labels including Bella Union, Erased Tapes, Staalplaat, and Beacon Sound -- is appended by a massive list of credits that reads like a who's who of 21st century independent, classical, and experimental music.Growing up in a musical household in Portland, Oregon, Broderick learned to play several instruments. After graduating high school, he became a session musician, contributing violin, banjo, musical saw, mandolin, and other instruments to recordings by M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, Dolorean, and Norfolk & Western, among others. His self-released debut EP, 4 Track Songs, appeared in 2006. Via his MySpace page, he befriended Danish band Efterklang, and in mid-2007 he moved to Copenhagen to work with the group. That same year, Docile, his first album of solo piano pieces, was issued by Kning Disk. Float (Erased Tapes) and Hope (Bella Union) followed in 2008. Broderick continued his productive work rate into 2017 with the release of All Together Again, which collected his commissioned works from the previous decade. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi PeterBroderick.net

Kath Bloom was born to musical parents. Her father was famous oboe player: Robert Bloom. She loved and lived for music of all kinds, but by the late seventies , she had absorbed much of the amazing folk and rock musicians who lived and died and changed the world during those times. She sang harmony with her friends ,and eventually picked up a guitar and wrote her own stuff. Teaming up with Loren Mazzacane and Tom Hanford in New Haven Ct, she became very prolific. But performing made her nervous and strangely withdrawn. She also painted and wrote poetry, then had a child and a failed marriage. She later found Stan Bronski(second husband). They had two more boys. All the while, writing and singing. She also began doing music with small children, eventually teaching classes. Moving from New England to Florida, she created theater and music with kids and formed a woman"s band which was fun. All her playing to this point was local to the regions she lived. When the family moved back to New England in 2000, she had become a horse trainer also, working with many young or "difficult" animals and this also was medicine for her soul. .And always recording. In Ct she reunited music with Hanford again, playing in that region, for kids and familes.,working with horses, raising the family In 2007 Guy Blackman ( Chapter Music) and Caveh Zahedi (film maker) contacted her about doing a Tribute album. Her songs were recorded by Bill Callahan, Meg Baird, Mark Kozelek and others. Gradually invites came from England, Spain, and eventually Japan and Australia. She also began casual occasional touring in this country. In 2016 she made a video with Esther May Campbell in Bristol, England. She has many self-produced albums plus ones put out by Guy Blackman and Mark Kozelek, Now she enjoys performing most of all , plays with Flo Ness and David Shapiro and is grateful to all that have encouraged her!! In an effort to keep ourselves interested in this shit thing called "politics", the saddest bois on the RP roster present a series of readings of the lyrics of veritable sadboi icon Mark Kozelek, the leader of the bands Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon and a prolific solo artist, as well as somebody who has evolved from - well - a sad boi to an extremely grumpy middle-aged man, who is still also a bit sad. With Comrade Rice returning to the show for the first time this season, after a brief overview of Kozelek's career he and Jack read three of Koz's more political sets of lyrics from the last few years, and discuss; is he a melt, or, furthermore, an outright sexist? Is "apps not education" the American "care not car parks"? Does Koz's grasp of queer theory leave something to be desired? And, are politics simply better when you're a cat? Following Koz's lead, we trash Trump and the Clintons, and Yair updates us on his gonzo-style investigation of US marijuana law (which, surprisingly, involves smoking lots of it.)

We are proud to present a performance by celebrated singer-songwriter Kath Bloom! Kath Bloom is a legendary American singer-songwriter from Litchfield, Connecticut. In the 1970s she collaborated with Bruce Neumann and recorded with avant-garde guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors releasing multiple albums of fragile, simple folk and blues melodies that play heart strings and raw nerves like a shaman summoning a beast made of blinding light. She stopped recording new material for a few decades, choosing to raise her children, until Richard Linklater discovered her music sometime in the early '90s and subsequently featured her song "Come Here" in his 1995 film, Before Sunrise. Since then, Bloom has continued to write new songs and has released albums on Caldo Verde Records and Chapter Music. A tribute album entitled Loving Takes This Course was released in 2009 and features artists such as Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan, and Mark Kozelek. Kath's new album Pass Through Here was recorded over the last three years in Los Feliz and will be released by Chapter Music (Australia) this fall. "Bloom sounds like a woman who has spent years in the wilderness… An earthy, unpretentious presence, she can snap a heart like a twig." – Pitchfork

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Umm, perhaps not as slick as the usual ultra-professional fare you’ve no doubt come to expect here at Song, by Toad, this podcast is nevertheless at least not quite as howlingly mental as our usual SXSW podcast. Instead of recording the usual podcast, drunkenness compelled me to put it off, so we ended up recording one in the tour van a week later. I say ‘tour van’ but what I really mean is 30ft RV, which is what we’re actually travelling around the in instead. Late confirmations meant we couldn’t confirm the trip until the last minute, so booking hotels would have been an expensive nightmare, and a regular van was looking to be twice the price, so we, er, ended up with this. Memory Tapes - Yes I Know One of my favourite songs of recent years, with 'Yes I know' Dayve Hawk mixes strident military drums with gothic 80s pop stylings. 3. Jonny Greenwood - Toki no Senrei wo Uketeinai mono wo Yomuna A stand out track from Jonny Greenwoods stunning soundtrack for the film adaptation of Haruki Murakami's book 'Norwegian Wood'. 4. Seti The First - Le Basinette Noir The opener from the debut album 'Melting Cavalry' by Dublin based Seti The First. 5. Clark - Mother McKnight A woozy, warm and playful Chris Clark rarity on a release called 'Throttle Clarence'. 6. Katie Kim - Your Mountains Katie Kim at her brilliant best with this fragile lullaby from her 2012 'Cover to Flood' album. 7. Bogdan Raczynski - Alright (Part 7) The Canadian prankster is better known for insane drill and bass excursions or tongue in cheek hyperactive mashups but dig a little deeper and you'll unearth exquisite gems like this. 8. Jai Paul - Jasmine Its always refreshing to have your perception challenged, so I'll never forget hearing the teeth wobbling bass that unhinges everything in this insanely soulful track. 9. Parks - Topaz This beautiful song takes me back to a more innocent time for ambient music when it was enough to get lost in plateaus of revolving patterns. 10. Ex Confusion - Chapter 5 I discovered Japanese guitarist/laptop minimalist Atsuhito Omori by accident last year but he has subsequently become a mainstay in all my playlists. 11. A Winged Victory For The Sullen - Steep Hills Of Vicodin Tears Just when I thought US drone masters 'Stars of The Lid' were closing up shop, this stunning side project appears out of nowhere. For me this particular track stands out for its uncharacteristically hopeful and conclusive cello sequence. 12. Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises I actually pulled over the car and parked by the side of the road to listen carefully when I heard this first come on the radio one evening, one of those pinned to the earth moments. It feels like the song that represents everything about Mark Kozelek as an artist. 13. Lilac Time - Love Becomes a Savage I rediscovered this 1987 gem by The Lilac Time earlier this year. I adored it years ago. It acts as a great reminder of a particular strain of gothic pop recalled and touched on by many artists such as Junior Boys and Memory Tapes now. 14. Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou - Mother's Love A recent discovery but from an older time, this piece sums up everything wonderful and unique about the music of this Ethiopian nun who still plays for up to eight hours a day in a monastery in Jerusalem where she now resides. 15. The Leisure Society - We were Wasted This song for me acts as a sister piece to Mark Kozeleks 'Admiral Fell Promises' with its delicate nylon string guitar arrangement and lush vocal harmonies. 16. Message to Bears - Wake Me A wonderful uplifting piece by Oxford based multi instrumentalist Jerome Alexander. 17. Joe Keawe & His Harmony Hawaiians - Hookipa Paka After a recent exploration into the cheerful waters of vintage Hawaiian music, I stumbled upon this slow reflective gem. 18. Cleoma Breaux & Joe Falcon - Mon vieux d'autrefois A similar recent dive into cajun music resulted in discovering the music of Joe Falcon (1900-1965) and his wife Cleoma Breaux (1906–1941). 19. Clark - Frost Investigation Another music box themed piece seeing as we're wrapping things up. 20. The Doobie Brothers - Busted Down Around O'Connelly Corners I'll finish off with this brief beautiful guitar passage by Doobie Brothers guitarist James Earl Luft.
