I know I know...I hype up the return of the podcast, and then don't drop anything for nearly a month.I feel a bit lame, and I wanted to acknowledge that. All the reasons why I "took a break" in 2024 are the same things that contributed to my "long pause" between episodes #138 and #139.This isn't how it's always going to be, but it may be how it is for a while. No, you're not seeing things. The name of the podcast has changed. Welcome to the first episode of "Unraveled & Unwritten," and the start of Season 3.It felt like it was time for a change (as I type this I can't help but think of Peter Brady when his voice started to change), and while "Awaken The Extraordinary" felt inspirational and empowering, I began to realize that part of "awakening" to that which is extraordinary about ourselves first requires a lot of unraveling, and a lot of blank pages. So it's been a looooong time since I dropped a full-length episode, and if you're wondering why that was, give this episode a listen. Just like Ross and Rachel, I needed to take a break, and did so for a number of reasons. I realize this may not be the most exciting or entertaining episode, but I wanted to share a high-level overview as to what's been going on for the past (nearly) year.Did you love this episode? Many of us love those cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies, right? There's something about the picture-perfect holiday that just gives us the warm fuzzies. But a lot of us love The Griswold family and their "Not Quite Hallmark Holiday." Why is that?Because for many of us, the holidays depicted in those Hallmark movies are something we aspire to, but the Griswold's "Fun Old-Fashioned Family Christmas" is more realistic. It's easy to feel like OUR Christmas Day is the only one that isn't living up to expectations, but I promise you, that is not the case.If you've ever felt bummed out on Christmas Day, this episode is for you.So go grab a warm beanie, gloves, socks and a blanket, head upstairs to your attic, and give this episode a listen. *Disclaimer: Due to the hectic-ness of the holiday, this episode was recorded while en route to the only "mall" we have in Missoula. The holidays are an emotionally charged time of year, right? You're excited and basking in the ooey gooey warmth of the holidays. Christmas movies are on rotation, Sirius is playing holiday music, you're spending way too much money on holiday decorations when you visit Target, Hobby Lobby and/or Home Depot. Or is that just me? ;)But you know...sometimes the holidays have you feeling a bit like Charlie Brown. Kind of down, but you're not quite sure why. Or maybe you DO know why.I have coined 2023 as my "Year of The Leather Pants," a la Ross from FRIENDS. I thought this year was going to be great, just like he thought leather pants on a date were going to be a good idea. But this year has turned into a hot, sweaty mess. I've tried praying and crossing my fingers and putting good vibes out into the world, but so far, the only thing I've gotten from that is a paste that, like Ross, has prevented me from pulling my life together in the way I'd hoped (or in his case, just being able to pull his pants up would have been a win). It's hard to be thankful when you feel like life isn't going your way. But when I whipped out my magnifying glass to look a little bit closer, I found micro-moments that made me realize there are things I can, and should be, appreciative of.Something I also found...is that by doing something nice and thoughtful for myself, I'm actually showing MYSELF appreciation. All that I've been through this past year, and pretty much my entire life, and I haven't given up. I'm still here. I may not always be standing, but I'm still here, and that's worth acknowledging and celebrating. And when I do good for ME, it shifts my mindset, and I'm able to see things differently. I find that there is more to be thankful for than I realized, or maybe even just wanted to admit because I was feeling down and Grinchy. So if you're struggling this year, know you're not alone. Imagine me grabbing your hand and giving you a hug, telling you "I know how this feels."Go do something nice for yourself, just because. And see how that shifts things for you. And before I go...thank you. Thank you for listening. Thank you for tuning in episode after episode. I wouldn't be 130 episodes in if it weren't for you and others like you listening, sharing your thoughts and hearts with me, and letting me know that I'm not alone.Your encouragement and support means so much to me. And I hope in some way, I'm able to do the same for you.Happy Thanksgiving, Friend. (Oh...and if you make a trifle, don't follow Rachel's recipe)Did you love this episode? If so, I want to know! Where were you when you found out we'd lost a beloved friend?I was sitting at the dining room table when a friend texted me with the news. And I thought it was a cruel, sick joke. But unfortunately, it wasn't.Many of us were introduced to Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, the witty and quippy neighbor to Monica Geller, and best friend of her brother, Ross.Over the course of 10 years, Matthew stole our hearts and brightened our days with his charm and comedic timing. For those of us who felt alone, he truly did become someone we sought comfort in.So when we learned of his passing, our hearts broke and we grieved. Even though most of us didn't know him personally, we still lost a friend."FRIENDS" is a huge part of my life. You know how some people are with Star Wars? That's how I am with "FRIENDS." If they had a "FRIENDS" convention, I'd be there. And Chandler? Well, he was the character I related to the most. And in this episode, I talk about why that is. We all know what it's like to feel scared, right? And a lot of us like that feeling - it's why we enjoy movies that make us jump and check under our beds before we go to sleep. It's why we fork over $20 and wait in line for an hour just to be chased by zombies and chainsaw-wielding psychopaths. But do you ever stop to think about how often you feel scared "in real life?" What do you want to do, but don't, because you're scared of what someone might think or say? What do you hold yourself back from because you're scared of failing? Or, you're scared of actually succeeding?Even if we believe we act courageously, there are plenty of things in life where I think many of us allow fear to run the show. And then how circumstances or time (or both) kind of "forced" us to "grow up" and leave that sweet, pure child behind. And it made me sad.It also made me realize that while we can't give Cher a call and ask her to help us turn back time, we CAN acknowledge that innocence we once had, and make space for it again. What if reconnecting with our inner child made us feel more whole, more like who we were meant to be in the first place? And what would our world look like if we all made space for sweetness, joy and fun? There's only one way to find out!Did you love this episode? When we're watching a super hero movie, most of us root for the "good guys," right?Because the "bad guys" are, well...BAD!But are they? What if they're just misunderstood? What if the story we're being told about why someone is the villain isn't even true?Have you ever been cast as "The Villain" in someone else's story? I have, and it sucks because I know I'm not the bad guy. And another thing? It hurts, especially when it's the people that are supposed to be "closest to you" who think that. What I've come to realize is that if people want to cast you as "The Villain," let them. If people are going to twist everything you say or do in a way that constantly makes THEM the victim of your wicked ways, create your own plot twist and just let them.Don't try to convince them you're not who they think you are. Your time and energy is better spent on those who actually "get"you. Those who KNOW you're a good person without having to be convinced of it.Not everyone is going to like you, and that can include your family. But trust me - as long as YOU know who you truly you are, and validation from others isn't crucial to your happiness and self worth, you're going to be OK. Did you love this episode? We also talked about how other peoples' opinions about us, our families, and our choices don't really matter unless we decide that they do. Lastly, we talked about choosing to be kind even if you don't understand or agree with what someone is doing. Each day presents us with several micro-opportunities that we can choose to learn from, if we're paying attention. And each day, we can choose to be whoever we want to be. I want to share what I'm experiencing, or have experienced, so that you feel less alone, and maybe supported and/or encouraged if you're experiencing something similar in your own lifeRecently, I experienced some blowback regarding this podcast, and the things I share on it, and it made me question what I was doing.I began to second-guess what I choose to share with you, because I didn't want to risk upsetting someone. But then I realized that that wasn't fair to me. Or you. Even if it doesn't seem like it at times (haha), I am very intentional about what I share. Because I know what my intention is. And if other people don't understand it, and make no attempt to even try to understand...I've decided I'm not going to make that MY problem to remedy. My stories are MINE to share. Did you let the stylist know you weren't happy with the services they provided? If you did, good for you!If not, then you may want to give this episode a listen. (By the way...even if you DID speak up, I still invite you to listen!)I share about some of my experiences with a few different stylists that left me less than happy. Instances where I should have spoken up, and didn't...until I got to the point where I was ready to rip my hair out because I hated it so much. And then? THEN I said something! We have so many opportunities to stand up for ourselves, and so much of the time - we don't do it.Why is that? In this episode, I explore why I think that is, and why it needs to change. And how, with opportunities like the ones I share here, we can begin doing just that.Did you love this episode? Did you know that your brain functions in a different state as you're drifting off to sleep, and as you're awakening?Your subconscious is more open to suggestions during this phase, and that's why I try to stay away from all the negative stuff before I go to sleep, and for a while after I awake. That's what inspired me to drop this episode as a "bedtime story." I found this story really inspiring. So many of us have a wonderful idea but talk ourselves out of taking action for one reason or another. It's that tape our subconscious mind plays over and over, telling us all the reasons why something WON'T work. But what if we recorded a NEW tape? One that inspired us to take inspired action? One that encouraged us to believe in ourselves and our ideas so that we could start living an intentional life? It's my hope that you listen to this as you're drifting off to sleep tonight. And if you fall asleep while listening, that's totally OK! You know why? Because your subconscious mind is still paying attention! And that matters - maybe even more than you realize.Want to grab a copy of this book? I mean, it's kind of obvious what this episode is about, right?Have you ever thought that you would do something, but then were kind of surprised when you actually DID it?That's how I feel about this milestone. In this episode, I just hit record and whatever was on my heart and mind to say - I said. This podcast is A LOT of things to me, and I share what those things are here. And yeah - I know I sound a bit like Mike Tyson in certain parts of the episode, and I think it was a buffering issue. I contemplated re-recording it, but part of who I am is NOT being polished and perfect. Also...the overall technological aspect of this episode is very weird. Which sometimes happens to me when I'm emotional. And again, I thought to re-record the episode, and then decided against it for the reason stated above. It's not perfect. It's not polished. So...jeans that I felt uncomfortable in.After looking at myself in that terrible, dressing room lighting...and after whipping out my card to pay for those jeans I didn't hate, but didn't love...I realized that sometimes, feeling uncomfortable and moving through the discomfort is how you actually get...drumroll please...comfortable!So there's no fun "Pretty Woman" montage to accompany this episode, but I hope you give it a listen anyway!Did you love this episode?
