Morgan was hired at the resort in 2017 at the Haunted Mansion, and her twin siblings Hannah and Bryce were hired a few years later. Their cousin, Cameron, also works in Toontown. News: It is that time of the year to start planning for the Halloween season at Disneyland. Next week, Oogie Boogie Bash tickets go on sale. This is a competetive event to get tickets for, so be sure to get in early and pick your dates. Inspire Magic Key holders can get tickets starting on June 24th no earlier then 9am Disneyland time, with all other Magic Key holders having an opportunity starting June 25th. General public sales start on June 26th. Dates start even before the Halloween season on August 17th, and run through October 31st. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/2025-halloween-at-disneyland-oogie-boogie-bash-dates-and-more/ There are some other updates on the Halloween season at the resort. For 2025, Halloween Time will start on August 22nd and run through October 31st. Mickey and Minnie will get new outfits for the occasion, as usual. This time they will be a twist on the 70th costumes! Haunted Mansion Holiday is returning, along with Halloween Screams. Over in Disney California Adventure, Luigi's Honkin' Haul-O-Ween, Mater's Junkyard JamBOOree, and Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark are returning. Mickey's Trick and Treat is coming to the Disney Theater for the fall, replacing Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! Of course food and merchandise will be along as well. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/2025-halloween-at-disneyland-oogie-boogie-bash-dates-and-more/ With Halloween Time and Disneyland's 70th happening at the same time, you might wonder what is staying from the 70th during the spooky season. Paint the Night, World of Color – Happiness, and Tapestry of Happiness will continue to run throughout the season. Disney says “areas and attractions around the resort will retain special touches, including decorative accents and the colorful castle photo opportunity in the esplanade.” – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/2025-halloween-at-disneyland-oogie-boogie-bash-dates-and-more/ This Saturday, a few authors of Disneyland books will be at Wonderground for a book release and signing. Don Hahn and Christopher Merrit will be on hand to sign The Happiest Place on Earth: The Incredible Story of Walt Disney's Disneyland, Martha Blanding and Tim O'Day for Groundbreaking Magic: A Black Woman's Journey Through the Happiest Place on Earth, Matthew Reinhart for Disneyland Park (a Pop-Up Park Tour), and finally Bob Weis with Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering. Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room has a reopening date of July 3rd! Pixie Hollow has been behind construction walls for a while now, and looks to be returning on June 29th. – https://www.micechat.com/417417-disneyland-update-guest-injury-expansion-blues/ When we were in the parks a few weeks ago, we noticed new lamp posts in front of Main Street Station, by the Mickey floral. Walls are back up in this area to install more of these lamp posts. The new lights look like gas lamps, but use regular bulbs with a mesh over them to give a vintage look. – https://www.micechat.com/417417-disneyland-update-guest-injury-expansion-blues/ We talked about the neat Magic Band touch points around Disneyland in a previous episode, but there was still one location that had not come online yet. The last point in Tomorrowland, themed to Autopia is finally online. This one is a bit of a letdown as this one only makes car noises when activated. – https://www.micechat.com/417417-disneyland-update-guest-injury-expansion-blues/ An update that came to Epcot at Walt Disney World has made its way to DCA! Soarin' Around the World has been updated to fix the skewed Eiffel Tower in the attraction. – https://www.micechat.com/417417-disneyland-update-guest-injury-expansion-blues/ Over on Pixar Pier, the new Rex meet-and-greet is available. Rex is out and looks as adorably scary (if you can say that about Rex). – https://www.micechat.com/417417-disneyland-update-guest-injury-expansion-blues/ SnackChat: Trip Food (Savory Eats Treats) Discussion Topic: Spring 2025 Disneyana Event The Happiest Place on Earth- Chris Merritt and Don Hahn – https://www.laughingplace.com/w/disney-parks/d23-live-stream-happiest-place-on-earth/

News: The Disneyland 70th finally kicked off on Friday. While the lines for merchandise, 70th experiences, and food were longer than usual, the lines for attractions were very off-season feeling. Rise of the Resistance had a 35 minute standby wait at 4pm, and Space Mountain had a 40 minute wait. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The 70th castle sculpture in the esplanade revealed an interesting twist this week – it is a music box! At least that is what is sounds like. Different, music box versions of Disney songs play throughout the day for passing guests. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The new Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live show has debuted in the Disney Theatre in Disney California Adventure. The new show is a big upgrade from the last show in the theatre, and is still geared towards younger kids, with seating on the floor only. The show features characters, bubbles, snow, disco lighting, and more. Unlike the previous show, Mickey and Minnie are present throughout the show. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ After over two years, a part of Adventureland has returned in a different form. The Adventureland restrooms across from the entrance to the land have finally lost the not very temporary wall. The wall was put up over two years ago to cover the damage from a burst water pipe. The new wall features some plants, a highly-themed water fountain, and a dividing wall that matches the nearby building. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The new live action Lilo & Stitch movie is coming to theaters on May 23rd, and Stitch has stopped by Disneyland to celebrate. Stitch came and had a busy day at the parks, but left behind evidence he was there. A Stitch-themed window has been taken over outside the Emporium. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/stitch-crash-lands-at-disneyland-for-70th-celebration/ Fans of the Animation Academy unite! New clips that play in the large screens around the main lobby area have been added and include “Coco,” “Princess and the Frog,” “Moana,” “Soul,” “Zootopia,” and “Encanto.” Some clips from “Lady and the Tramp,” “Pinocchio,” and “Frozen” were removed to make room. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ SnackChat: Magic Key Terrace – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/magic-key-terrace/menus/ Wine Country Trattoria – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/wine-country-trattoria/menus/ Sonoma Terrace – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/sonoma-terrace/menus/ Discussion Topic: Tage and Teresa's Trip to Disneyland and the Disneyana Event

One of the Red Car Trolleys has been donated to the foundation to support their mission of helping students discover STEM and STEAM careers. The bad news is that this means that it is likely not coming back at DCA. – https://www.instagram.com/p/DIFBaXARVYm/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== I know we are a Disneyland podcast, but I feel that we need to talk about the dragons, monsters, wizards, turtle shells and banana peels in the room… This week, influencers were invited by Universal Studios to experience their new theme park in Florida – Epic Universe. News: It is a time of great sadness in Southern California as wildfires rage and devastates so many people's lives. The Walt Disney Company has committed $15 million dollars to Los Angeles Area Fire Relief & Rebuilding Efforts. Further resources will be provided to the Employee Relief Fund to help Disney employees who are impacted. Many Imagineers called the areas of fire devastation home. – https://disneyparksblog.com/disney-experiences/disney-company-los-angeles-area-fire-relief-rebuilding-efforts/ https://www.micechat.com/407847-disneyland-news-fires-hope-next-chapter/ Construction has officially begun on the expansion to Avengers Campus. Sunday, January 12th the Timon parking lot was closed to start construction. A lot of prep work still needs to be completed before any vertical construction can begin, but it has started! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/01/12/confirmed-construction-just-started-on-disneys-avengers-campus-expansion/ For Weeklyteers who want to get in on the Beverage Education & Tasting Seminars for the Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival, tickets and reservations are now open. The festival will run from February 28th through April 21st. The casting call is looking for “vibrant, energetic, and dynamic vocalists of all gender identities.” The performer chosen will be a DJ host who is youthful, quirky, and has great comedic timing, according to the post. This could be a new show moving into the Disney Theatre, home to the Disney Jr. Dance Party. – https://wdwnt.com/2025/01/casting-new-show-disney-california-adventure-s25/ Fans of the Disney Dress Shop in Downtown Disney may be wondering where it went soon. The location is getting a new sign “Disney Storyland Boutique.” Once the new sign is installed, the shop should also be reopening in the old Wonderground Gallery location. – https://www.micechat.com/407847-disneyland-news-fires-hope-next-chapter/ A Megabot sipper from Big Hero 6 is available for purchase in Disney California Adventure starting Friday. The sipper is in the shape of a Megabot – the robot seen in the opening scenes of the movie. Guests can purchase this item at both restaurants in San Fransokyo. – https://wdwnt.com/2025/01/new-big-hero-6-megabot-sipper-coming-soon/ Lunar New Year arrives at Disney California Adventure later this week and the six food marketplace booths are already setup, with menus and pricing revealed. It looks like the pricing has increased on the items, so a Sip and Savor Pass might be the way to go. No pricing has been released for the pass at this time. – https://www.micechat.com/407847-disneyland-news-fires-hope-next-chapter/ When purchasing a Sip and Savor pass this year, you will have another choice to make: what design do you want? This year's passes will come in three limited designs which pay homage to either Chinese, Vietnamese, or Korean cultures, while also featuring Disney characters in culturally-inspired outfits designed by artist Ann Shen. – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/sip-and-savor/ A new beignet has come to the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square. The Chocolate Hazelnut-flavored Mickey-shaped Beignets are basically Nutella beignets! There is an optional chocolate-hazelnut dipping sauce which you can get for $1.39. The beignets themselves can be purchased in a 3-pack for $6.49, or a 6-pack for $10.49. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/01/10/review-did-disney-just-make-mickey-beignets-even-better/ With Jolly Holiday closed for a major refurbishment, you might be craving some of the treats that usually call this location home. “Here And Now” Letters To Cleo may seemed to have suddenly shown up on the pop culture landscape in 1994, but the fact is, the Boston outfit had been grinding it out on the club since 1990. Their single “Here and Now” was an instant classic—a melodic dose of perfect pop stomp that showcased singer Hanley's powerful vocal delivery. The band tore through the ‘90s, releasing three perfect albums (Aurora Gory Alice, Wholesale Meats And Fishes and Go), appeared as the house band in 10 Things I Hate About You, played SXSW, and playing with everyone from Cheap Trick to Neds Atomic Dustbin. Oh, and I almost forgot: In 1996, playing Mary Magladene, Hanley co-starred with Extreme's Gary Cherone in the Boston Rock Opera's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. In the early 2000's, Hanley was the singing voice for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie and the Pussycats and though the band called it a day that same year, they did record 15 new and original songs for the Kids' WB cartoon Generation O! That will become important in a second, but just to round out the corners here, Hanley toured as a back-up singer for Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana venture, put out a handful of great solo releases, sang the National Anthem at Gillette stadium for the Patriots and got to work on her new career, composing all-original songs for animated TV shows like Doc McStufins, DC Super Hero Girls, and Harvey Girls Forever, to name a few. How's that career going? Well, in 2022 Hanley won an Emmy for songwriting on We The People. So I'd say, not too shabby. On that front, she and her writing partners Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty and Charlton Pettus created Disney Jr.'s Kindergarten: The Musical and Hanley is also co-executive director of Songwriters of North America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songwriters_of_North_America), an LA-based non-profit which advocates for fair pay and other rights for songwriters. As for Letters to Cleo? Well, the band may no longer be a full-time concern, but they pop up here and there to play gigs. They just completed a mini-November tour and they have a show on Jan 9th in Madison at the Majestic. Get your tickets now. Well, listen to the show, THEN get your tickets. Or multi-task. How to Talk to Kids about Disabilities w/ Amanda Owen

Mama Knows

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2024 47:35

The conversation explores the importance of talking to kids about disabilities and how to approach the topic. Amanda Owen, who has a brother with a rare chromosomal disability, shares her personal experience and passion for advocating for individuals with disabilities. They discuss the need to normalize disabilities early on, finding common ground with individuals with disabilities, and the importance of open and honest conversations. They also touch on the generational shift in attitudes towards disabilities and the impact of societal norms on children's perceptions. In this conversation, Amanda Owen discusses how to address children's curiosities and teach empathy and inclusivity towards individuals with disabilities. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing similarities and finding common interests, as well as using moments of curiosity as teaching opportunities. Amanda also suggests using the phrase 'excuse us while we're learning' to address inappropriate comments and engage in a respectful conversation. She became a special education teacher to help students like her brother, but desired to offer her students and their families more. Taking a leap of faith, Amanda left the classroom 11 years ago to launch Puzzle Pieces, a Kentucky-based nonprofit that serves individuals with disabilities, offering them targeted autism services, residential living, vocational training, supported employment, behavior services and more. Amanda's work has become a state and national model for disability services, allowing her to speak all over the country on advocacy, provider services and her perspective as a sibling. Frederick's training at the Steppenwolf Theatre exposed her to the guidance of industry powerhouses such as Amy Morton, Sheldon Patinkin, and K. Todd Freeman.
