It's a not entirely merry episode of Media Path with some hard but cautionary truths about guardianships AND, a new Christmas musical that celebrates our festive diversity.Greg Thirloway and Maurice Godin are launching a new musical called Oy To The World, that celebrates the Jewish composers who brought us so many carol classics like Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Oh, Holy Night and I'll Be Home For Christmas. Then, we're speaking with investigative journalist, Diane Dimond whose new book about the dangers of guardianship is required reading in a Post-#FreeBritney world.Oy To The World: Christmas With A Twist will premiere, December 14-23, at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre:  Greg and Maurice give us a sneak peak into their new show which takes place at a Catskills lodge where the new owner decides to put on a Christmas show. In so doing, Christmas carol backstories emerge. Did you know, for example that Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is inspired by writer Bob May being teased as a child about his “Jewish” nose? So, yes, not just Jesus, but also Rudolph was Jewish!Diane joins us to discuss her new book, We're Here To Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong. She shares her extensive research into the dangerously secretive and insular “legal” practices which lead to citizens losing control of their finances and their freedom. The guardianship or conservatorship systems in the U.S. are state-run,largely unregulated and increasingly populated by financially motivated predators. As we've learned from Britney, anyone who has saved some money or who is earning money is at risk. Diane offers shocking examples of the system's dysfunction and the victims and devastated family members left in its destructive wake. Diane also offers solutions and tips for keeping yourself and your family members safe. As a generation of Boomers continues aging, it is vitally important that we address, amend and federalize guardianship law.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new Joan Baez documentary on Prime and Apple TV, I Am Noise and a new crazy cult doc mini-series on Max, Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God.Path Points of Interest:Diane DimondWe're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong by Diane DimondGuardianship Central ResourcesDiane Dimond on FacebookDiane Dimond on TwitterOy! to the World: Christmas With A TwistUse Code: FRITZ for $5 discount on any performance!El Portal on FacebookEl Portal on InstagramMaurice Godin on IMDBGreg Thirloway on IMDBJoan Baez - I Am NoiseLove Has Won: The Cult of Mother God

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersGenerally when the festive season rolls around and talk turns to Christmas albums the general chill that runs down most metalheads spines would rival that of the North Pole.Far too often a purely commercial venture by smiling sonic assassins out to further enhance their global acceptability, the Christmas album tale has long been fraught with fear and contempt. The year 2017 was a welcome exception when song siren Tarja released the devilishly wicked From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas). That album further showcased the infinite well of talent and creativity that defines Tarja, putting her own spin on music that normally brings joy and cheer and turning them to the dark side which such majestic beauty that even adults started to believe in Santa Claus once more.Well, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but it did mean we didn't have to listen to Mariah Carey singing carols at every dark turn. This year Tarja returns with Dark Christmas on November 10, broadening her horizons by tackling other artists interpretations of Yuletide cheer such as Wham's Last Christmas, Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas and Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime and mixing them with her own reworkings of classics such as Frosty The Snowman, Jingle Bells and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.Plus, to put the veritable icing on the Christmas Cake, Tarja also celebrates the happiest time of the year by releasing her own Christmas original track, Dark Christmas. In keeping with spreading love and cheer at this time of year, Tarja sat down earlier this week for a chat with HEAVY to unwrap the presents."You can call me a Christmas woman, alright," she smiled, laughing. "This is my third Christmas album. To do an album like this, very different, very much darker than usual… even though the songs that you hear are the songs that everybody knows. But when you get to listen to them, they have absolutely different arrangements. Very cinematographic, dark arrangements. And so I love this Christmas tradition that I have as an artist. It's a very, very important part of my career. I'm doing tours every year, at the end of the year since 2005. A long time."We dive into Dark Christmas musically a bit deeper."This time I chose songs that are very, very known," she began. "There's Jingle Bells and All I Want For Christmas Is You, Last Christmas, White Christmas. I don't necessarily enjoy myself this kind of music. The music that sounds in supermarkets when you get there… it's too commercial and all yuk. So I wanted to escape from all that and make these songs more appealing to me first of all as an artist. I worked the arrangements with a man called Jim Dooley in Los Angeles. He's working only for films with movie soundtracks, so he understood my concept that I wanted to get was to get these songs completely different. Of course, the melody you know, but it's a completely different world when you emerge and listen to these songs. In some songs this time I took some creepy kids. There is a kid's choir brought into play from Argentina. My daughter plays drums and the symphonic orchestra with my voice. That's about it."In the full interview, Tarja explains why there is a six-year gap between Christmas albums, what she feels makes a true dark Christmas, using the children's choir and what that added to the songs, how she has reworked existing tracks to make them her own, the obvious covers and how they differ, if she thinks it is a child-friendly album, the original song Dark Christmas, making a video for all twelve songs and more.

Welcome to the 2022 (NA)CP Christmas Special. To begin this episode, we go over all things Christmas Trivia! Listen to find out how long it took Kyle to actually learn how to spell 'Santa Claus' and how Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer is the most unjust Christmas movie of all time! To close out the show, Kyle muses on current Christian culture and how it relates to the way we celebrate Christmas. Has legalism affected the way we view holidays? Is Christmas Pagan? Why have we turned "Merry Christmas" into a political football? All this and more on this episode of (NA)CP!

R&SRNR_172 – “THE HIT SINGLES HISTORY OF RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER” This is our seventh annual Xmas episode. We're celebrating the season with a one-of-a-kind salute to the most famous member of the reindeer team that pulls Santa Claus' sleigh through the skies every Christmas Eve – Rudolph Red-Nosed Reindeer. We'll trace Rudoph's history – from his birth in an advertising campaign for a Chicago-based department store to the song that gave him superstar status as the best known and best-loved Christmas critter of all time. Along the way, we'll sample every hit single version of “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Then we'll survey the songs that continued his adventures. And finally, we'll spotlight some “Rudolph wannabees” who also left their tracks in Xmas music history. Our resident Rockologist, Ken Deutsch, and  Radio Dave are joined on this episode by our special guest and good buddy, Jay Douglas, Ph.D. Jay is an acclaimed archivist of anecdotes who's an authority on “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer's” resume. Together, we've got more of the greatest rock and roll Christmas stories on record. Hear it all here.

We did it again! Listen to this to hear me and friends sing some solos and duets of famous Christmas songs. I joined talented musician Justin Belew at his production studio Bibb City Sound in Columbus GA for part 2 of our J & J Christmas Music Extravaganza, following up on the most popular "Run The Race" episode from the past year (check out #92). We have a few special guests performing this time around, including my WTVM co-anchor Barbara Gauthier. Subscribe to listen and find all the conversations I have weekly about faith and fitness! We have some fun with this one, give some interesting info on holiday songs you know, and talk about the Gospel that's at the heart of Christmas. Here's a rundown of the songs we sing and talk about: (4:43) JINGLE BELLS, one of the most famous ones but did it originate in Boston or Savannah GA? It also had a different title. After we sing that together, (11:16) I do an Elvis impersonation (maybe not a good one) on BLUE CHRISTMAS, a sad tune, while (14:32) Justin turns into a diva for ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU by Mariah Carey, a song that people tend to love or hate. (17:32) We do some fun or funny duets with LET IT SNOW! which was written in the summer sun of California, but does everyone want snow? Justin and i also play our parts in (26:19) BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE. We also talk about the controversy surrounding this song over the last decade vs. the original intent. (32:58) Local songwriter, singer, and Army veteran Tim Maggart, who's originally from TN, plays guitar and does his rendition of TENNESSEE CHRISTMAS, a classic by Amy Grant. He talks about memories songs bring and how the military handles the holidays. He also jumps in for a quick FELIZ NAVIDAD, then we continue the international flavor with (42:00) my solo of MELE KALIKIMAKA, Hawaii's greeting at Christmas, played on a ukulele from Waikiki! There are also important hymns and songs focused on Jesus that we sing, like (47:47) O COME ALL YE FAUTHFUL, sung at many holiday services at church, then we discuss the changing lyrics of (53:31) AWAY IN A MANGER and sing the classic song of faith together. (57:28) Veteran TV news anchor and my friend Barbara Gauthier does a beautiful acapella version of SILENT NIGHT, then she and I talk about the Savior Jesus being born and what people may have thought of that news more then 2,000 years ago. (1:06:08) Justin also plays and sings one of his favorite holiday songs by a Christian artist, LABOR OF LOVE by Andrew Peterson. We discuss the poetic lyrics that presents the Gospel in a raw way, how it may have been for Joseph and Mary. We have some fun with our J & J duet of (1:19:30) RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER, a character and song which has a surprisingly sad origin. Were the other reindeer really bullies to Rudolph? We discuss. (1:27:25) The Carpenters sang this one much better, but i give it a try with (THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE) HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, then we close out this Christmas Music special with (1:36:58) a quick discussion about how The Charlie Brown Christmas Special almost did not air, but brings us wonderful music like CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE. We give you an instrumental version and brief duet. Hope you enjoyed our music and discussion about Christmas, faith, music, and more. Tell your friends about it! What does Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer have to do with the real meaning of Christmas? We're talking about that great television program that aired way back in 1964. Do Rudolph, Hermie, Yukon Cornelius, and the Abominable Snowman have anything to teach us about the story of the Incarnation, the amazingly true story about God the Son coming to Earth as a human baby? Father Gale thinks so. (And he also shares an encouraging word from Bishop Gerald Vincke.)

Submitted without voiceover, here is yet another insight into Bob Bain's life. Today's podcast is a recording made by Bob at his home in 1965 for one of the epic Clark Family Christmas Eve parties. This cherished memory starts with Bob accompanying the Bain and Henderson kids on his composition “Relatives”, then Aunt Jean leads the Friley, Terry,  Branson and Schwartz kids through “Frosted Windowpanes”, “Nan's Carol” (sung to the tune of Girl From Ipanema), and the legendary “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” (the Ting-A-Ling song). The recording paused, then picked up midway through the Clark Sisters incomparable version of “The Christmas Song” (regrettably, a noisy mic cable distracts here, but the performance is worth listening past that) and “Winter Wonderland”. Then we hear Pop Clark and Aunt Marguerite perform “Second Hand Rose” and “When It's Circus Day Back Home”. Note Pop's spot-on Fanny Brice accent, how cleverly he adapted the lyric gender, and his circus rap—pretty hip for a guy from North Dakota. Marguerite's chops as accompanist are first rate.  The music extravaganza continues with Pop and Mom Terry in the remarkably anti-war song “Not Me” and Pop runs through a couple of risqué jokes that would've played very well in vaudeville. These are the voices and songs of people now in the past, presented here for us to remember.
