When a loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer, the journey touches every corner of life —especially for caregivers. In honor of Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, for this powerful episode of Real Pink, we sit down with two incredible Black men of faith, Kenneth White, spiritual adviser and group facilitator for a national addiction treatment center, and John K. Conner of Praise Is the Cure, a nonprofit focused on breast cancer awareness in the Black community, as they open up about supporting their wives through breast cancer. Through a lens of faith and cultural identity, Kenneth and John reflect on what it means to show up with strength and vulnerability, how spirituality grounds their caregiving and the importance of community for Black families facing a diagnosis. Their stories illuminate a side of breast cancer that's often unheard — but deeply needed.

If your doctor is recommending that you get a mastectomy, you will likely have some choices about how the surgery is performed. Your breast cancer treatment, your body, your breast shape and your lifestyle affect not only your options, but also the pros and cons of your options. There's no one method that works best for everyone because each person is unique. Today we are going to be exploring one specific type of mastectomy – the nipple-sparing mastectomy. This is a skin-sparing mastectomy that leaves the nipple and areola intact and usually improves the overall look of the reconstructed breast. Joining us on the show today are two very special guests: Dr. Mara Piltin, a Breast and Melanoma Surgical Oncologist and Physician Assistant, Maddie Beiswanger, both from Mayo Clinic. They are going to tell us more about nipple-sparing mastectomy procedures, current research that is being conducted around the use of minimally invasive robotic surgery to assist in these procedures and the possible benefits that these innovations can provide. This episode of The Real Pink Podcast is brought to you by Intuitive Surgical. Intuitive is a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery. Intuitive has been advancing minimally invasive care since 1995 with the goal of helping physicians improve the lives of people around the world. You can learn more at www.Intuitive.com

Sheila Romanski is with us today after overcoming two diagnoses of breast cancer and the removal of a tumor in her left shoulder thanks to an autologous stem cell transplant.  She tells the @CancerInterviews podcast her initial of Stage 1A breast cancer in 1996 came after her doctor suggested a routine mammogram at age 36 when at the time mammograms were not performed on women that young.  Radiation treatment successfully addressed that diagnosis, but the following year, the cancer had metastasized to her shoulder.  That brought on the stem cell transplant, plus chemotherapy and more radiation.  All seemed well until 2008 when the breast cancer returned as Stage 4 triple negative infiltrating ductal carcinoma.  Shiela opted for a double mastectomy with reconstruction, which was followed by a second, more aggressive form of chemotherapy.  She has been pronounced NED (No Evidence of Disease), and now enjoys a healthy lifestyle, leading a non-profit that aids cancer victims.   Sheila Romanski advises everyone to do self-examinations for breast cancer.  She admits had she done so, her breast cancer would have been caught sooner.  In 1996, it was rare that 36-year-old women went in for routine mammograms, but Sheila's doctor suggested such an exam.  Thanks to that suggestion, a 2cm tumor was found.  She underwent a lumpectomy and radiation treatment.   While it appeared cancer was in her rear-view mirror, in 1997, a lump was found in her collar bone area.  That was treated with four chemotherapy treatments and autologous stem cell transplant, a procedure involved her own stem cells.  The chemo and the transplant last four months.   For Sheila, this time in her life was very challenging.  She was no only battling cancer, but she was raising four small children.  However, she says she was able to get through because of support from her friends and her church, and because attending to the needs of her kids took her mind off cancer.   Sheila's health appeared to be on the right track until 2008 when another routine mammogram revealed micro-calcifications in the same breast as her original diagnosis.  She decided a double mastectomy would be her best option. It would include a procedure called a diep flap, which involves taking skin from other parts of the body.  However, her surgeon said Sheila would have to lose twenty pounds before diep flap could be performed.  It took Shiela ten years to lose the weight and by that time, her surgeon said she no longer performed diep flap.  However, she said she could get Sheila “fixed up” and in 2021, thirteen years after mastectomy, reconstruction was complete.   Sheila Romanski has gone on to found Crystal Roses, a non-profit that seeks to aid those diagnosed with cancer.   Additional Resources:   Support Group:   Crystal Roses  https://www.crystalroseshelps.com

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women — but far too often, cultural stigma, language barriers and a lack of tailored education prevent early detection and timely care. To celebrate AANHPI Month, we're joined by Dr. Judy Wang, a national leader in cancer prevention and behavioral science at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Wang unpacks how breast cancer uniquely impacts AANHPI communities, and why culturally responsive communication is critical in closing gaps in education, screening and survivorship. She also shares how providers, advocates and researchers can better meet AANHPI women where they are — with humility, trust and cultural understanding.

Her journey into breast cancer care began with a personal tragedy. At the age of 16, Dr. Jenn's cousin, acclaimed singer-songwriter Linda Creed, died of metastatic breast cancer just weeks after Whitney Houston's recording of her iconic song, "The Greatest Love of All," topped the charts. This loss became a defining moment, inspiring Dr. Jenn to dedicate her life to transforming how we approach breast cancer treatment and prevention.Dr. Jenn became Philadelphia's first fellowship-trained breast surgeon and spent 17 years leading the field. However, her perspective changed significantly when she became a patient herself. Through this personal experience, Dr. Jenn saw how broken the conventional medical system can be. This led her to discover and embrace functional medicine, a revelation that sparked her journey towards a more holistic approach to breast cancer care. This personal journey led her to create Real Health MD in 2019, a practice dedicated to holistic healing for breast cancer. It integrates conventional wisdom with root cause medicine and the drivers of health: nutrition, lifestyle changes, detoxification, and stress management. Dr. Jenn's innovative approach doesn't stop there. As the founder of PerfeQTion Imaging, she is establishing safe imaging centers across the nation, armed with revolutionary technology that promises to redefine breast cancer screening. This technology is not only fast and safe but also comfortable, affordable, radiation-free, and boasts 40 times the resolution of MRI. It has received FDA clearance, signaling a new era in breast health and breast cancer screening. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Jenn hosts the "Keeping Abreast" podcast, where she shares her expertise and encourages women to take control of their breast health. Are you about to get a mammogram and now worried about the conflicting information? Then tune into this episode with radiologist Dr. Robyn Roth who gives us her side of the story on mammograms and alternatives to breast screening.  You'll either love this episode or hate it, but I like to present both sides of the story. Over the last year I have had numerous guests who warned us of the dangers of mammograms. I had several of you reach out to me wanting me to share the other perspectives out there. So I gathered all the arguments that our guests have talked about in other episodes and presented them at Dr. Robyn to hear her rebuttal. We covered: The fears around mammograms Do mammograms really save lives? Are we over diagnosing and overtreating women? What is the damage that is done on a woman given a false diagnosis? What percentage of DCIS goes on to become an aggressive cancer from her experience? If mammograms don't pick up calcifications on dense breasts, why are we even doing them? What the man who invented mammograms says is the gold standard of breast screening Alternatives to mammograms and how reliable are they? If mammography is not recommended to pregnant women because of the risk of radiation on the fetus, then why are we all getting mammograms? Is a woman really a survivor if she dies at 6 years past her diagnosis instead of the time bias of 5?   Dr. Robyn Roth is an Ivy-league trained board-certified radiologist specializing in Breast and Abdominal Imaging, with over 15 years of clinical experience. She is better known as @TheBoobieDocs, her popular social media platform where she discusses breast cancer and breast health in an educational and fun way. She emphasizes the need for early detection and the role of AI in improving mammogram accuracy.  Radiation from mammograms is minimal compared to other medical imaging. QT imaging lacks sufficient data to be considered a reliable alternative. Thermography is not a reliable method for breast cancer detection. Mobile ultrasound services may lead to false diagnoses. I had a choice in terms of what would be the best option to remove the invasive ductal carcinoma that I had just learned was in my left breast.  I had recently had a biopsy in a different part of my left breast. Given that there were 2 places that had the potential or were actually problematic, I opted for a mastectomy. I thought that if there were 2 problem areas, there were likely to be more problem areas in that breast. I did not want to take any chances on having more cancer. I also wanted to avoid needing radiation. By removing my left breast via a mastectomy, I was not likely to need radiation to the breast or chest.  In addition to being convinced that there was a storm brewing in my left breast and even possibly other places that could be cancer (there were not), I wanted to avoid any radiation effects on the heart and lung tissues, which were situated nearby the left breast.   I share my personal assessment of the situation and why I chose to have a mastectomy in this episode. I also talk about my experience of looking back and wondering if the mastectomy was the right decision, nearly 2 years later and given the more in-deptch screening that I know have, knowing my risk for developing breast cancer. .   The content of this podcast is not intended to substitute professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Breast cancer risk looks different for everyone. Our guests today have an inherited genetic mutation that increased their risk of breast cancer. Without knowing it, they may have passed this gene onto their children. Genetic mutations can increase risk of breast and ovarian cancers in women, and prostate cancer in men. About 10% of breast cancers are genetic – knowing if you have a gene mutation can help you take steps to lower your risk. It can also cause fear and anxieties and force tough conversations with family members about their genes and cancer risk. Shanise Pearce learned in 2020 that she has two inherited gene mutations and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. She also has two daughters. Natalie Gutierrez was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and learned afterward that she carries an inherited gene mutation. She has twin sons. Shanise and Natalie are both living with no evidence of breast cancer and have turned their attention to supporting their children and helping them navigate their cancer risk.

It is Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day – an annual opportunity to bring more awareness to this aggressive type of breast cancer that is difficult to treat because it lacks an estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptor. It primarily affects younger women and Black women and can spread quickly and be deadly if left untreated for too long. Treatment for TNBC used to include the toughest forms of chemotherapy, with debilitating side effects – but we've come a long way in how we treat patients with Triple Negative Breast Cancer so their outcomes are better. Today, we are speaking with Dr. Heather McArthur of UT Southwestern. She is a former Susan G. Komen grantee, Professor and the Komen Distinguished Chair in Clinical Breast Cancer Research. Dr. McArthur has been working on a Phase 3 clinical trial called KEYNOTE-522, which is testing whether a specific immunotherapy drug improves overall survival for people with high-risk early Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Dr. McArthur, along with her colleagues, are trying to determine if all people with this type of breast cancer truly need the drug, and if not, who would most benefit from taking it.

242: If you have breast cancer, know someone who does, if it runs in your family, or perhaps you or someone you know has already gone through breast cancer treatment, this episode is one to save and definitely listen to. Breast cancer affects EVERYONE—not just the person who has it. Because if we don't have it, we most likely know someone who does or will. It's not something to take lightly, and sadly, there's a lot of misinformation out there about treatment and detection. That's why I have Dr. Jenn Simmons on the show today. She exposes and explains why mammograms can actually increase your risk of getting breast cancer, why soy doesn't contribute to breast cancer, the connection between birth control and breast cancer, whether HRT is harmful or helpful, and the types of HRT we should be getting after breast cancer treatment. We also cover alternative options for mammograms. Plus, we go into how to do a self-examination, why every woman, young and old, should be doing this monthly, and the right time to examine yourself—because that matters too! This might be one of the most important podcast episodes you'll ever listen to. Topics Discussed: Are mammograms causing cancer? How to detect breast cancer without radiation Do underwire bras contribute to breast cancer? Do mastectomies actually prevent you from getting breast cancer? What we're getting wrong when it comes to breast cancer detection How to examine your own breasts Things women are doing that increase our risk for breast cancer and how to minimize that risk HRT myths Soy and breast cancer myths Caring for yourself or others AFTER breast cancer treatment IVF and hormonal birth control Stress and its link to breast cancer Becoming empowered As always, if you have any questions for the show please email us at digestthispod@gmail.com.  And if you like this show, please share it, rate it, review it and subscribe to it on your favorite podcast app.  Sponsored By: Manukora Head to MANUKORA.com/DIGEST to get $25 off the Starter Kit Equip Foods Code DIGEST gets you 20% off at Equipfoods.com/digest Fatty15 For 15% off the starter kit go to fatty15.com/digest Our Place Go to fromourplace.com and use code DIGEST for 10% Connect with Dr. Jenn Simmons Go to Auria.care & use code DRJENN20 Website Instagram Podcast YouTube Get her book Check Out Bethany: Bethany's Instagram: @lilsipper YouTube Bethany's Website Discounts & My Favorite Products My Digestive Support Protein Powder Gut Reset Book  Get my Newsletters (Friday Finds)
