    Salad & Spuds. MDS

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 88:15

Well Europe didn't happen thanks to ManUre somehow beating Villa, with help from an appalling reffing cock-up and Forest bottling Champions League qualification…feats matching Man City's pathetic showing in the FA Cup, but Albion themselves stood, not fell, securing 8th place and coming to within a point of their record PL points total to round off what most will consider a rather good season all things considered. Experiencing the utter roasting of the Spuds was the usual suspects, who imbibed pre and post to good effect and had a bloody good knees up regardless of missing the place they deserved in The Conference League. So Albion signed off in style, as did the MDS part of this season's podding. Can't wait to see what next season brings with new signings, returning players and another season leaving our upstart little brothers trailing in our wake no doubt. Stand or fall!!! UTA!!! In the pod squad this week were Russ, Pete, Alan and our latest debutant Lincoln Pigman, a self-described Johnny come lately who has timed his choosing of a football club with uncanny aplomb! The quartet discuss the felling of confirmed champs Liverpool in style on Monday night, thanks in (final) part due to one half of a cousin combo of subs: Jack Hinshelwood. The other half of that combo was (even) young(er) Harry Howell from Albion's academy. What a time to make your debut in the stripes! Also under the spotlight was the rest of the PL action, the play offs, P*lace's Europa ‘complication', Albion transfer news (Boscagli on his way to us!!!), Sky Sports' ever increasing saturation coverage of the PL and a look ahead to Albion's final game of the season at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where the club seek the point or more needed to fulfil their part in a four-pronged set of required outcomes to get them that second bite at European football for next season. Poor Pawson, penalty chaos, a (probably deserved) 1-1 score line, Minteh centre stage and a JPVH / Dunky double-chest down to the keeps!!! Yes it was an eventful afternoon down Falmer Way. Albion avoided conceding 2+ goals which was a pleasant novelty but saw themselves slip to 10th in the table, an unwanted side effect to the medicine Dr Brighton administered to Brentford a couple of weeks ago, with The Bees now buzzing towards that coveted Europa Conference spot. Russ & Pete welcomed Craig Clayton to the pod to tell us about his beloved Barnet FC's plans to return to the local borough from relative exile in Edgware. Craig is part of the campaign group hoping to raise awareness and support for their bid to return home, with a site very close to their cherished ancestral home (now a school!) at Underhill being the location identified. As well as telling us his Bees backstory and about how well things are going on the pitch, there's wistful reminiscences about Underhill (the original), Pete's account of his own many visits, having been brought up in the vicinity and of the major names that have graced the hallowed turf, such as Tony Cotten and Edgar Davids, yes….THE Edgar Davids. Then in part two, your regular undynamic duo looked back again to the highly creditable draw at City, stretching the unbeaten run to 7, reflected on the rest of the weekend's main talking points and examined how the EFL promotion and relegation battles are shaping up. Winning that game meant one double was achieved for the Albion in the shape of back-to-back home wins against Chelsea, but it wasn't the only double for Brighton at the weekend. It was just the reaction the boys in the stripes needed to provide and they did so, thanks to an accomplished headed finish from Smiler and a delicious low chipped winner by Mito, leaving an array of objectionable ex-Seagulls in his wake, sprawled pitifully upon the hallowed turf of Albion. Evenings (far too late evenings, thanks a lot ITV you selfish bastards!) don't get much better than this and my oh my did we all enjoy it, even though many had to stay at home to watch on the tellybox (thanks again ITV you selfish bastards!). The considered views of Andy K and Raymond ‘The Gent' Wrighty McWright accompanied the idle ramblings of your erstwhile and consistently nauseating host Russell G - who now seems to have taken to singing pod intros……good grief and lord save us all!!! As well as revelling in the rightful elimination of Chelsea (not completely, they DO still exist unfortunately) the chaps cast an entertained eye over the rest of the weekend's cup games including Devon's cream of the crop, cupsetters extraordinaire Plymouth Argyle, perused the 5th Round draw and considered Albion's prospects for Chelsea (h) Part Two. However it was far from all fun and games and kicking Marc Cockarella ten foot upwards. It was our profoundly sad duty to report to any that hadn't heard already of the devastating loss to us all of Worthing FC club legend Peter Vale. Pete passed away this week following a very recent cardiac arrest. He leaves behind him an array of people harbouring the fondest of memories of his kindness, friendliness, dedication to the club through all his free time generously given up in order to travel the length and breadth of the country commentating on Rebels games and his wonderful sense of humour. Yes it's all about the threes! Another three points as we complete three successive wins at Old Trafford, under three different managers, completing three wins in a row, which happen to all be away wins within the space of one week! Happy days! Albion made their superiority count as they came away with all three points yet again from the Theatre of Leaks. In this episode Russ and Pete were zooming, with plenty of reflections on the game, but only after we heard from our northern correspondence Alastair and Nick, who gave us their thoughts while at the game for a mini MDS. We are UP FOR THE CUP! And we really were on Saturday, riding an early threat from Norwich to eventually romp home 0-4. A great day out, a great performance and some fantastic positives to be taken from the game, including a welcome return for Danny Welbeck, a welcome and sensational appearance from the bench for Solly March, some really good goals including an overdue strike for Julio Enciso and last but by absolutely no means least, a first team debut for young Albion centre back Ruairi McConville, who came on and acquitted himself really well. Russ spoke to his dad and younger brother in the away end at the end of the match and found both family members to be delighted and extremely proud of Ruairi's debut. Also on the pod we heard from two Davids, Chris, Sam, Molly, Caroline, Will and Clive. So next up, an immediate return to East Anglia with a visit to Portman Road in the Prem. Joining the debate in Part 2 we were delighted to welcome Joe Fairs from the @BlueMondayITFC podcast to debate the key points and find out what it's been like on The Tractor Boys' ride, rising rapidly to reach the top table over the past two years, thoughts on Kieran McKenna staying put, thoughts on Albion and the Premier League experience and how it's changed since last time they were here.
