In this lively Friday edition of The Daily Herold, Jon Herold juggles kid duty, crypto quips, and deep state drama while tackling the day's top stories. Trump's proposed 50% tariff on the EU and 25% on Apple imports dominate the headlines, with Herold dissecting the geopolitical and economic implications, especially after a curious White House meeting between Trump and Tim Cook. The show also explores Trump's crackdown on Harvard's international student program and the swift judicial response that followed. Jon revisits Trump's forgotten “American Academy” proposal and questions the media silence surrounding this potentially revolutionary education reform. He breaks down the FTC's investigation into Media Matters, the censorship tactics used against conservative platforms, and ActBlue's donor scandal. Updates on the Russia-Ukraine prisoner swap and nuclear policy add depth, while a viral meltdown, AI-generated animal cartoons, and WNBA drama provide comic relief. Topped with biting commentary on Disney's politics, Smartmatic's legal troubles, and Sean Ryan's questionable interview chops, this episode is a whirlwind of current events, irreverent humor, and razor-sharp insight, all delivered in classic Herold style.
Deron Patrick Scarabin covers the elaborate 2025 Mother's Day meal prepared for our mom, his wife Pam, and family, with help from his daughter, Madi. The discussion details the multi-course menu, cooking techniques, and logistics, highlighting Deron's passion for cooking as a hobby.Sautéed Shrimp with Garlic Cream Sauce: Fresh Louisiana Gulf shrimp sautéed in butter, served with a creamy sauce made from shallots, garlic, white wine reduction, heavy cream, and thickened with dry roux. Inspired by a restaurant sauce, tweaked after testing.Fried Cabbage Patties with Blue Crab Topping: Cabbage boiled, mixed with grated carrots, shallots, garlic, tomato pesto, breadcrumbs, egg, and flour, formed into patties, frozen, and pan-fried. Topped with a lump blue crab mixture with bell peppers, tomato pesto, and parsley.Asparagus: Parboiled, ice-bathed for vibrant color, tossed with olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper, then broiled briefly.Boudin Rice: Smoked boudin (Cajun sausage and rice) sautéed, mixed with rice browned in butter and cooked in chicken stock, inspired by a local restaurant.Sweet Potato Mash: Cubed sweet potatoes roasted, deep-fried, mixed with bacon, shallots, corn, and cousin Craig and Desi's Vermont maple syrup, adapted from a creamed recipe.Filet Mignon with Lobster Tail and Blueberry Red Wine Glaze: Small filets pan-seared in clarified butter, finished in the oven, topped with butter-sautéed lobster tail. Glaze made from shallots, reduced Cabernet Sauvignon, mashed blueberries, beef stock, butter, and cornstarch slurry, prepared a week prior.Melting Lava Cake: Chocolate (60% bittersweet) and butter melted, mixed with eggs, sugar, orange zest, and flour, baked at 500°F for a short time to keep the center gooey. Served with ice cream and orange zest garnish, prepared the day before in large ramekins, affecting presentation but not taste.Preparation: Deron planned for weeks, prepping components (patties, glaze, dessert) days or a week in advance. Mise en place (pre-chopping ingredients) was critical for efficiency.Logistics: With Madi's help, Deron managed a restaurant-style service, serving appetizers sequentially and keeping dishes warm in a low oven. One pan was reused and washed six times.Tips:Use fresh, quality ingredients (e.g., Gulf shrimp, lump crab).Shallots preferred over onions for faster caramelization; clarified butter for high-heat cooking without burning.Ice bath for vegetables to stop cooking and retain color; reduce wine by half for sauces.Precise baking measurements for desserts, unlike stovetop flexibility.Personal Touch: Deron adapted recipes (e.g., cubed vs. creamed sweet potatoes, maple syrup addition), emphasizing creativity and family preferences (e.g., no cheese for Pam).Challenges: Large ramekins caused lava cake to collapse; crab egg rolls lacked texture in past attempts.Future Plans: Deron plans a less elaborate menu with chicken avocado egg rolls, Eggplant Pontchartrain, and Bananas Foster (a New Orleans dessert with butter, brown sugar, bananas, and optional flambé).Sentiment: Deron and Madi had a blast cooking together, treating the meal as a fun, rewarding project. The family enjoyed the food, with honest feedback encouraged to refine future dishes. Deron sees cooking as a joyful hobby, akin to a “double dip” of pleasing others and himself.

On This Episode: In this episode of the Long Range Tactics Podcast, Cole Quarnberg and Matt Hornback break down the fundamentals of field zeroing. What is it, why does it matter, and how do you pull it off when you don't have access to a 100-yard range or paper targets? Whether you're deep in the backcountry or mid-match with shifting gear, knowing how to verify and adjust your zero in the field is a skill every shooter should have dialed. Cole and Matt share real-world stories from hunts and competitions where things went sideways—busted scopes, mystery POI shifts, and how a calm mindset paired with smart planning can save your hunt or your stage. They walk through practical tools, terrain tricks, and backup methods that help shooters stay confident when conditions aren't perfect. The conversation also dives into suppressor performance, including first impressions of the Thunderbeast Magnus KRR and how it stacks up in recoil control and sound suppression. From decibel meters to field experience, it's an honest look at what works and what's just hype. Topped off with gear prep talk, scope failures, torque checks, and why routine cleaning still matters, this episode brings a grounded, no-BS look at staying sharp when it counts. If you're serious about keeping your rifle ready and your head in the game, this one's worth a listen. King Sunny Ade was, in many ways, the inspiration for what would become Afropop Worldwide. And he was by no means an inspiration only to us! Many fans in America first got hooked on Afropop (and African music in general) through the landmark 1982-83 tour by King Sunny Ade and his African Beats: The propulsive polyrhythms of traditional drums mixed with sophisticated guitar arrangements and pedal steel were like nothing we had ever heard. Topped by graceful choreography and the beaming presence of the “Chairman” himself, the effect was totally intoxicating. In this program, we travel to Lagos to talk to people there who help us fill in the picture of King Sunny Ade's earlier career in the 1960s and '70s. KSA also granted Afropop Worldwide a three-hour interview. We'll hear his stories and some classic recordings. Featured in the show are highlights from a sublime acoustic concert Ade and the African Beats gave at Joe's Pub in New York City. Produced by Sean Barlow APWW #468

Happy New Year 2025! To celebrate, here is an encore of what proved to be the most popular episode of 2024. This rerun combines episodes 30 and 31 into one epic journey towards the frontiers of human understanding. My guest is Donald Hoffman. Our topics are consciousness, cosmos, and the meaning of life. Enjoy! Original show notes Laws of physics govern the world. They explain the movements of planets, oceans, and cells in our bodies. But can they ever explain the feelings and meanings of our mental lives? This problem, called the hard problem of consciousness, runs very deep. No satisfactory explanation exists. But many think that there must, in principle, be an explanation. A minority of thinkers disagree. According to these thinkers, we will never be able to explain mind in terms of matter. We will, instead, explain matter in terms of mind. I explored this position in some detail in episode 17. But hold on, you might say. Is this not contradicted by the success of natural sciences? How could a mind-first philosophy ever explain the success of particle physics? Or more generally, wouldn't any scientist laugh at the idea that mind is more fundamental than matter? No — not all of them laugh. Some take it very seriously. Donald Hoffman is one such scientist. Originally working with computer vision at MIT's famous Artificial Intelligence Lab, Hoffman started asking a simple question: What does it mean to "see" the world? His answer begins from a simple idea: perception simplifies the world – a lot. But what is the real world like? What is “there” before our perception simplifies the world? Nothing familiar, Hoffman claims. No matter. No objects. Not even a three-dimensional space. And no time. There is just consciousness. This is a wild idea. But it is a surprisingly precise idea. It is so precise, in fact, that Hoffman's team can derive basic findings in particle physics from their theory. A fascinating conversation was guaranteed. I hope you enjoy it. In this episode, we're talking with the team behind Freedom One Racing, a new name making waves at this year's Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. The Shootout's loose rules invite wild setups, and Freedom One didn't disappoint, bringing a brand-new 388 Skater powered by twin 4,000-hp 4.9-inch bore, all-aluminum Noonan Hemi Pro Mod drag racing engines. The boat's engines are a marvel of engineering much of which is familiar to the 1/4 mile crowd, but unconventional to general marine performance guys. Topped by PSI screw blowers, the engines feature dry blocks (no water jackets) and require no cooling system. They employ MoTeC engine management systems and route the power to the surface drives through Coan Turbo 400-style three-speed transmissions. The Freedom One boat was purpose-built for shootout style events like LOTO and came together just days before hitting the water. While some mechanical hiccups kept them from a full-speed pass, they still managed to hit 170 mph officially (202 mph unofficially). Not bad for their first outing! We hear from team members Noah and Ryan Ola and Ryan Greco, as they discuss how this project came together, their big plans to break the LOTO top speed record, and why Freedom One is more than just a racing team—it's a philanthropic effort with a mission to give back.
