Episode 73 welcomes London based DJ and booker @TobyNicholas, a longtime lover of dance music and a DJ in his own right, best known as one half of a duo with @HamishCole. Toby has seen every aspect of club culture, both the good and the bad. After stints in Leeds and Manchester, where he cut his teeth as a founding member of the cult party series Dog Eat Dog, he started working for London venue @picklefactorylondon when it launched as a sister site to the now defunct Oval Space in 2014. Balancing his creative life as a DJ with the challenges of booking a small, headsy nightclub in Bethnal Green has been an uphill battle for Toby, especially as the nightlife industry in London continues to fight for its life amidst rising costs and reduced spending. In this episode, we look back at Toby's early days as a raver and finding his place in the music industry as both as DJ and a booker, the trials and tribulations of the London nightlife scene, and his favourite memories of the club he devoted nearly a decade of his life to. ++ Music: Glowing Glisses - "On The Bridge (Larry Heards After Dark Dub Mix)" North Avenue - "Solutions (Instrumental)" Ross Couch - "Groove On (Original Mix)" ++ FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/

This episode was recorded in July 2024. The second part of our interview with the lovely Kink Name Pending and Petite Pretzel focuses on tying male bodies, as well as bodies with ‘out-y' bits (which are sometimes the same, sometimes not!). The two rope switches share wise advice (and they, and the podcast, note that some of this will apply to tying genders of all types), including: • Risks you might not have thought of • P3nis predicaments • Handling size differences • Body hair • And plenty more. NB: The alternative title for this episode would be ‘How to wrestle an octopus' (IYKYK) Pen (KinkNamePending) is a UK-based rope switch who loves the connections that shibari inspires and the wide range of experiences with vulnerability and trust it has brought him. Outside of rope, he is keenly interested in anatomy and physiology and has studied these topics extensively; he brings his perspective and understanding of the human body into rope. He has performed in the UK and abroad. Petite Pretzel is a rope switch from New York City. She has been teaching shibari since 2019 at Anatomie Studio, London, as well as teaching and performing elsewhere in the UK and internationally. She lives in Bethnal Green with her cat, who loves ropes just as much as she does. Tune in to Episode 191 to hear part 1 of the episode.

Tim Dunn enters a world he admits he knows absolutely zero about: the world of weaving. Plus - did you know that the fabric on TfL seats, moquette, is also woven? Travelling on what will become the London Overground Weaver line to Bethnal Green station, Tim meets fine artist and maker Anna Ray, who has a special family connection to weaving and the incredible and dramatic history of textile production in east London that dates back to at least the 1700s. Tim then discovers that the moquette seats he sits on every day on Overground trains, tubes, trams and buses are also all woven. After another quick train ride, Tim meets Honor Clough from Camira fabrics, who explains how they weave this amazing and historic material. Then Tim sits down for a chat with TfL designer Claire Dilnot-Smith, who has a very enviable job: she designs the patterns for the moquette seats. _____________ Follow Tim Dunn Follow Anna Ray Follow Camira Fabrics _____________ Weaving and textiles in East London have deep roots dating back to the 16th century, when Protestant Huguenots fled religious persecution in France and settled in Spitalfields. Skilled silk weavers, they helped to transform the area into a major centre for the silk industry. By the late 17th and 18th centuries, the weaving trade flourished, with workshops and homes intertwined in this East London district. Spitalfields silk became renowned for its high quality, worn by the English aristocracy, and complex and beautiful patterns and designs would be woven into the cloth on the loom by the silk weavers. However, competition from imported textiles and changing fashions led to the decline of the silk industry by the late 18th century. The rise of mechanized cotton mills in northern England further undercut traditional hand-weaving practices in East London. In the 19th century, new waves of immigrants, including Irish and Jewish communities, revitalized the textile industry, focusing on tailoring and garment production. East London's Whitechapel and Bethnal Green districts became hubs for garment manufacturing, catering to London's growing fashion markets. However, by the mid-20th century, global shifts in production led to the decline of East London's textile and garment industries. Despite this, the area's rich history of weaving and textile production left an enduring legacy, influencing London's fashion and creative industries to this day. In recent decades, the district has seen a revival of craft and design, with local artisans and designers drawing inspiration from its weaving heritage. Today, East London is known for its vibrant fashion and creative scene, a modern echo of its historical textile roots.

Dyslexia is not just a disability but a trait of being an explorer, with unique ways of learning and thinking that can be beneficial in various aspects of life. The book features personal anecdotes and stories from individuals with dyslexia, showcasing the challenges and triumphs they have experienced. In Britain's 4 million strong Muslim community, Tasnime's behaviour is a model for how we should act – in unison to achieve our ends rather than for our individual ambitions.Tasnime is a criminal defence lawyer specialising in terrorism. He has defended high profile clients including Shamima Begüm and Jamal Hejazi – who bankrupted Tommy Robinson.Join our Patreon to get access to exclusive monthly Zoom calls: https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimYou can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateSign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merch Find us on:Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslim Host: https://twitter.com/jalalayn Hosted on Acast. By Davy Crockett During April 1879, the same month that the new American Championship Belt race was held in New York City, the second English Astley Belt race, for the “Championship of England,” was put on April 21-26, 1879, at the Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, England. While the Americans were putting up mediocre times and distances, still focusing mostly on walking during their six-day races, the Brits would run fast in this race and break 13 ultra-distance world records, proving that they were now the best in the sport. It truly was a mind-blowing race for the time. Sir John Astley In October 1878, Sir John Dugdale Astley (1828-1894), a member of Parliament, created an “English Astley Belt,” or “Championship Belt of England” six-day race series, which had to be competed for in England. It had bothered him that his original “Astley Belt” series had gone to America for its second and third races, so he created an English Astley Belt series. The First English Astley Belt was won by William “Corkey” Gentleman, a vendor of cat food, with a world record 521 miles (see part one, chapter 17). For the second edition of the race in this series, four entrants put up the required £100, including the defending belt holder, William “Corkey” Gentleman (1833-), of Bethnal Green, England. Others were, “Henry “Blower” Brown (1843-1900) of Fulham, England, George Hazael (1845-1911), of London, England, and Edward Payson Weston (1839-1929), the pioneer American six-day pedestrian, who had been in England since 1875. The best six-day finishes to date for each of the entrants were: Corkey – 521, Brown – 506, Hazael – 403, and Weston – 510. In England, just as in America, critics against six-day races were becoming vocal. In Nottingham, it was written, “We are to have another of those ‘wobbling' contests, of which so many have been inflicted upon us lately. The cure of this disease rests with the public is they abstain from paying the entrance money and stay away from these useless six days' ‘wobbles.'”  At least eighteen six-day races had been held in England so far, during the past three years. The Start Agricultural Hall The number of people who came out to witness the early morning start of the English Astley Belt Six-Day Race in the Agricultural Hall was impressive. “One would had almost thought that the public interest in this sport would have by this time been on the wane, if not entirely exhausted, but judging from the number of persons who witnessed the start, it does not seem to have abated in the least.” The race would be scheduled for less than 144 hours (six days), 141.5 hours. A little before 1 a.m., on April 21, 1879, the four runners were led to the starting line. Astley gave them some words of caution about fair play. Weston, always the showman, started in “a dark blue cloak with black trunks and scarlet stockings.” He looked bigger and more muscular than anyone could remember. As soon as Astley signaled, the three Englishmen sprinted away, while Weston casually walked, removing his cloak on the second lap to reveal his famous white frilled shirt. The track was measured to be eight laps to a mile. Runner Spotlight – George Hazael George Hazael (1845-1911), of London, England, was an experienced champion ten-mile walker who had been competing since 1870. He was also a true runner and ran the mile in 4:20:15. In 1877, he broke the 20-mile world record with 1:57:27. He started competing at the ultra-long distances in 1877, winning a 30-mile race in London. His first six-day race was in February 1878, at Pomona Gardens, Manchester, England, where he won with 239 miles. In March 1878, Hazel competed in the First Astley Belt Race but quit early with only 50 miles. In April 1878, he broke the 100-mile world record in Agricultural Hall, in London, England, with a time of 17:03:06. He also held the 100-mile walking world record with 18:08:20. In July 1878,

Contemporary artist Barby Asante moves through the London Transport Museum to Stratford Station, coming together with Black women TfL staff to take public space in a collective choral performance, a Declaration of Independence (2023). In 2023, Transport for London (TfL)'s Art on the Underground invited Barby Asante to present a new iteration of her Declaration of Independence, a participation-based work which draws on West African communing traditions. In collaboration with TfL employees, the ensemble vocalise the contemporary experiences of people of colour, and reactivate oft-static historical documents. Barby talks about her time in the photography archives at the London Transport Museum, finding images of women of colour at work in different roles, including those employed by London Transport's direct recruitment in Barbados and the Caribbean in 1956. She details the role of public art, in widening access, and encouraging connections between personal, postcolonial, and migration histories. Plus, Barby shares the many Declarations - many of which are neither written, nor codified - which have influenced her practice, and how the testimonies and collective work has changed on its travels between Berlin, Germany, and Bergen, Norway. Declaration of Independence performed at Stratford Station in London on 17 September 2023, part of Art on the Underground. The visual artworks remain on display at Stratford, Bethnal Green and Notting Hill Green Underground stations. WITH: Barby Asante, London-based artist, educator, and researcher. 101 years ago today a large crowd assembled on a crisp October morning in 1922, when Bethnal Green's first permanent public library opened its doors in a handsome red brick building in Barmy Park. The philanthropy of Scottish businessman Andrew Carnegie provided £20,000, and the remaining £16,000 was raised by the local authority.‘The council was handing down to future generations a legacy which would enable them to obtain knowledge and sweep away misery and poverty,' said the Mayor in his opening speech. This was a thinly veiled reference to the fact that only two years previously, an asylum stood on that site.Bethnal ‘madhouse' operated for 120 years in Bethnal Green, East London, and was notorious for its cruel treatment. Even today, most East Enders still refer to the grounds around the library as Barmy Park. Shockingly, the asylum only closed in 1920. Two years later, the library opened in what had been the male block. The disturbingly cruel incarceration of the mentally ill, replaced with learning and literacy. What a message of hope that must have sent to the community. But trials loomed ahead. Eighteen years after the library opened, in September 1940, a bomb crashed through the roof of the adult lending library at 5.55 p.m. on what would later be known as ‘Black Saturday', the start of the Blitz. What had been an orderly and well-equipped library became in a split second a scene of destruction. And here the story takes a surprising twist. Rather than simply hurrying for the nearest shelter, the borough librarian, George F. Vale and his deputy, Stanley Snaith, calmly pulled a tarpaulin over the shattered glass dome roof and set about planning a pioneering social experiment that would transform the lives of wartime Londoners.Bethnal Green Underground was a half-completed stop on the Central Line when war broke out. Builders were working on connecting it to Liverpool Street, but from 1939 it had been locked up and left to the rats. One week after the Blitz began, East Enders defied Churchill's orders not to shelter in Tube stations and claimed their right to safety. At seventy-eight feet below ground, it was one of the few really safe places to shelter in Bethnal Green and was referred to by locals as an ‘Iron Lung'.Over the course of the next twelve months, it was transformed into a fully-functioning subterranean community with an astonishing array of facilities. Metal triple bunks sleeping up to 5,000 stretched three-quarters of a mile up the eastbound tunnel. A shelter ticket reserved you a bunk. There was a three-hundred-seat shelter theatre with a stage and spotlights, which hosted opera and ballet, a cafe, doctor's quarters and a wartime nursery, which enabled newly enfranchised women to go out to work. But here's the best part – there was a library! I love surprises in history and finding out about George and Stanley's secret underground library, built over the boarded-up tracks of the westbound tunnel, felt like nothing short of magic.100 years on from the library's opening, on October 13th 2022, I launched my novel, The Little Wartime Library, in Bethnal Green Library and I was joined by some very special  guests. No one knows more about the complex labyrinth of Tube tunnels that run beneath our feet than Siddy Holloway, actress, historian and presenter of Secrets of the London Underground.

These works juxtapose portraits of women from art with images of modern day couture as a way of questioning the external forces that exist within both art and fashion and which shape and enforce our understanding of the ideals around women's status in society. Initially making the work just for myself I was persuaded by friends to share the work on Instagram where it has gained a steady stream of followers. This led to a bit of a career rethink and though I do still design for theatre I am focussing more and more on this more personal creative practice. This year I made a new series of large scale collage works entitled ‘The Shaping of Beauty' which were shown on advertising billboards in Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh. https://www.buildhollywood.co.uk/work/jessica-worrall-the-shaping-of-beauty/I also now sell limited edition prints of my work which you can find at my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/JWCollageTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. Something a little bit different for this episode of the podcast, where Dan interviews Alex Drummond, from his men and their emotions group, to give the perspective of an ‘every day' guy among the mostly celebs, professionals, specialists and social media influencers he usually speaks to. They talk about Alex's experience of addiction and becoming sober and how it has given him the tools to help other people. They also discuss the almost inevitability of drug and alcohol use becoming an addiction and why addiction is so common among men. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  Societal expectations can make it more difficult for men to reach out when they need help, from struggling with addiction and mental health to just everyday life difficulties. Accepting you are an addict is the first step needed to look for and acknowledge that you need help. The stigma attached to being an addict and simply the word itself can make this challenging. Alex started using drugs as just a ‘normal guy'. At first, he could manage drug use and his life. But after experiencing loss and other trauma, his drug use escalated and that's when his problems truly began. From the outside, Alex's life looked like it was good, his unhappiness and struggles were hidden and he was using drugs to cope with his emotions. After starting to use crack, Alex lost all his businesses, became homeless, and was sectioned under the mental health act. He had hit rock bottom and it took all of this for him to seek the help he needed. Almost all drug use accelerates. Everyone starts with a small amount and being able to cope with using and living an acceptable life, but at some point, it will accelerate. After you become sober you gain a lot of clarity, part of that means accepting how bad your behaviour was when you were an addict and being honest with others and yourself about the hurt and damage you caused. Figuring out the cause of your addiction is key. People use drink and drugs for a reason and until you can solve the cause of that you will struggle to become sober. For Alex, that meant accepting and facing his emotions and trauma.   BEST MOMENTS  “Acknowledging and admitting I'm an addict is it tells me what I now need to do…there's a power in it” “I was just a normal bloke who used drugs” “I bottled up my feelings since I was a 10 year old boy, I learnt how to deal with not feeling emotions, when I got older, drugs used to numb the pain” “I could not stop taking drugs, how could I be doing good in all areas of my life but this had me defeated?” “I don't feel comfortable with this feeling, I'm going to use drugs” “The problem wasn't with drink and drugs for me, it was my thinking and then the drugs became the problem” VALUABLE RESOURCES CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST Alex Drummond “I'm 40 years of age, from Bethnal Green in East London, I'm currently working in technology event sales for a company called Inspired Business media. I worked abroad for 4 years in Europe then moved to South Wales in 2003. I started running nightclubs and developed a heavy cocaine addiction for the next 15 years. I helped set up 4 businesses, grew them, became very successful, got married, had a baby through IVF after trying for 7 years. My Mum died in 2013, I hit a brick wall and my using accelerated. Got kicked off as a director of my companies, got sectioned for my mental health, ended up in hospital with Sepsis, nearly died, split from my wife, wasn't allowed to see my daughter and was made homeless. Ended up in Rehab for nearly 5 months, then came out and relapsed again and ended up street homeless again. Finally on 1st June 2017 I found recovery nearly 6 years clean and sober. My rock bottom moment was trying to commit suicide again for the 3rd time and being devastated that I was still alive when I came round. Now I have a beautiful relationship with my daughter, see her 3 days a week, have a beautiful partner, we love together, I have a great job with quality people and I get to help others in my life who are going through the same thing. “ Instagram@Thatsoberman Facebook: @Thatsoberman ABOUT THE HOST Daniel O'Reilly Daniel O'Reilly is one of the UK's Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Season 14 continues with VERY special episode with one of our all-time ART WORLD ICONS!!!! We meet the legendary gallerist MAUREEN PALEY. Inspiration to many of today's international contemporary galleries, Maureen was in fact the reason our co-host Robert Diament became inspired to change careers to work full-time in a gallery! We discover how she began her gallery programme in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London's East End. Initially named Interim Art, the gallery changed its name to Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. In July 2017 Maureen Paley opened a second space in Hove called Morena di Luna. In October 2020 a third space was opened in Shoreditch, London called Studio M. Seeking to separate fact from fiction, the multi award-winning series returns to investigate the divisive story of Shamima Begum. When three London school girls went missing in 2015, they generated global headlines and the media storm that ensued continues to this day. Back then, investigative journalist Josh Baker was filming at a mosque in the girls' neighbourhood as their families came to seek help; their daughters were on the way to Syria to join the Islamic State group. But it was too late, and they disappeared inside the so-called caliphate. For four years, their fate remained a mystery - with only occasional glimpses and sometimes conflicting reports of what they were doing with the terror group being made public. Only one of the girls emerged from the ashes of the so called caliphate - Shamima Begum. The new series takes listeners inside Josh's attempts to figure out what really happened, unearthing new information about one of the most talked about stories of our time. He travels from Bethnal Green in East London to the depths of what was ISIS controlled Syria as he challenges Shamima Begum and investigates if the story she tells is true.
