PRESS REVIEW – Monday, June 16: The conflict between Iran and Israel features on many front pages and is widely debated in the inside pages. Also, the controversial FIFA Club World Cup continues to make headlines, but perhaps not for the right reasons. Next, MI6 appoints a female head for the first time in 116 years. Finally, German soldiers get a telling-off for causing "romantic strife". The conflict between Israel and Iran continues to rage on, and features on many front pages this Monday morning. The Jerusalem Post leads with a photo of the destruction following a strike in the residential neighbourhood of Bat Yam. Iran Daily has photos of the aftermath of an Iranian strike on an Israeli power station in Haifa. Tehran Times, meanwhile, highlights the civilian victims of Israel's latest strikes on Iran. The Lebanese paper L'Orient-Le Jour points the finger at US President Donald Trump. French daily Libération says it is a "dynamic of the worst", saying it is in the interest of both parties to continue the conflict in order to stay in power. L'Humanité takes a clear stance on its front page, calling the conflict Benjamin Netanyahu's war without limits. The Guardian has an opinion piece by Simon Tisdall. He says that the behaviour of the three leaders involved in the war – Trump, Netanyahu and Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei – raises serious doubts about their judgment, common sense, motives and even their sanity. The New York Times, meanwhile, says that diplomacy with Iran is damaged but not dead. Foreign Policy discusses how the war might end. It says that darker scenarios are most likely, including a potential regional war. The past weekend has been a busy one for football fans after the launch of FIFA's controversial Club World Cup. The tournament is making headlines, but not for the best reasons. The Telegraph headlines with "Bayern thrash team of forklift drivers and fizzy drinks salesmen 10:0 in FIFA farce". Meanwhile, The Times reports that the Professional Footballers Association has joined a legal action against FIFA for abuse of power. In the UK, the Financial Times reports that Britain's foreign intelligence agency MI6 has appointed its first woman leader – a first in the organisation's 116-year history. Meanwhile in Germany, soldiers can now be punished for having an affair with each other's spouses because of the "danger of romantic strife eroding morale", as The Times reports. You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

In this episode, Alex is torn on what he feels about FIFA's Club World Cup. This is a new experiment that FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, hopes will expand the international soccer market and make FIFA more money. Alex talks about how players are exhausted and not excited about the cup, sponsors have pulled out, and Saudi money is infused in the broadcasting. Alex also notes that the cup is in the United States and the specter of Trump's immigration crackdowns lurks over it.

Sommerpause.

Vindication – at last – for Marcus Speller and the Nations League! Spain and France had a nine-goal punch-up last night and what can only be described as an incredibly post-season number of shots (40).Marcus, Jim, Andy and Vish discuss the game and turn their eyes to England's meeting with Andorra tomorrow, who – incidentally – are perhaps the only team in world football who might miss out on qualifying for next summer's 6-week long World Cup (more on that).
On this week's episode, Sinéad and Gavin look ahead to the biggest events of the summer, previewing storylines and the likely winners and losers. What the hell is Fifa's Club World Cup, and why is Gianni Infantino a collectible in the official sticker album? Can Rhasidat Adeleke or anyone else on Team Ireland win a global medal at the world athletics championships? Why do we all get so inexplicably caught up in the British and Irish Lions? Can Ireland actually win a quarter-final, this time, at the women's Rugby World Cup? European members of the world soccer body FIFA staged a dramatic walkout at the world governing body's congress in Paraguay when President Gianni Infantino arrived late earlier this month. The Europeans accused Mr. Infantino of prioritising his personal political interests by attributing greater importance to meetings with US President Donald J. Trump in Qatar, the host of the 2022 World Cup, than to FIFA's highest decision-making body. Mr. Infantino was part of Mr. Trump's extended entourage on the president's three-nation Gulf tour, which also included visits to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. With their walkout, the Europeans highlighted a core problem with global sports governance that has dogged FIFA, the International Olympic Committee, and virtually all other global, regional, and national sports associations for decades: the insistence on the fiction that sports and politics are separate.

The 2026 World Cup is going to be different. Three host nations and 48 participating teams are perhaps the most notable changes to the tournament's format, but, as purveyors of all things soccer culture, one new addition has piqued our interest the most: a Super Bowl-style halftime show during the final. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called it a "can't-miss event," and many have speculated as to who is the right artist to perform. Including us. On the latest episode of the Urban Pitch Podcast, we go through our picks to headline the landmark performance, from Drake to Taylor Swift and beyond. In addition, we get into some of our favorite kits from America's lower leagues, a conversation spurred by the new Forward Madison home kits that the club was kind enough to send us!
Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. An auditor who worked for Barcelona for four days is the only one who included the €100million sale of VIP seating to Middle Eastern investors and now that has been questioned by La Liga, which could lead to Dani Olmo and Pau Victor's registrations being in question. When you think this story is as ridiculous as it could possibly be, the scriptwriters find something else even more ridiculous to add into the mix. In reports filed from the previous auditor, who worked through sometime on December 31, and the unknown auditor who worked from December 31-January 3, and the next auditor who started on January 3 (we think)... only the unknown auditor had the sale included. That sale allowed Barcelona to have the additional salary cap space per La Liga rules to extend Olmo & Victor's registrations into 2025. But that sale either didn't happen, wasn't properly accounted for, or something else because it didn't show up on a subsequent financial report. Lots for the courts, league, and federation to sort out in Spain. And it affects a potential bid for a quadruple from Barcelona who are leading La Liga, won the SuperCopa, alive in the Champions League, and now into the final of the Copa del Rey where they will face Real Madrid. Announced this morning, the bid led by the US (which might or might not include Mexico as a co-host) was the only one submitted by the deadline to host the 2031 Women's World Cup. Gianni Infantino said at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade that other Concacaf nations could be involved in hosting matches, something that has been reported recently here in the US. The 2035 tournament will be hosted by Great Britain as it was the only to submit a bid in time for that event. LAFC beat Inter Miami last night in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal, the first loss for the Herons in 2025 in all competitions. Nathan Ordaz with the goal in the second half, second leg is in Ft. Lauderdale next week. Chattanooga Red Wolves won the penalty shootout across town at Finley Stadium to knock Chattanooga FC out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in the second round in the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Over 12K were on hand for the game, 4th largest crowd in CFC history and their largest in a long time, 2nd largest in the 2nd round in the history of the USOC. Jose Mourinho did another ridiculous thing, which is becoming commonplace for him at this stage of his career. He grabbed the face of the opposing manager after yesterday's Turkish Cup match between his Fenerbahce & Galatasaray. The ridiculous actions seem to come on a bi-weekly basis for Mourinho at this stage, sad after one of the greatest careers for a manager in history but completely inexcusable to act in this manner. Liverpool defeated Everton yesterday 1-0, Everton should have had a player sent off for a horrendous challenge, but Liverpool's goal was controversial as well. Referees got it right according to how the rule is written, but I'm asking IFAB to consider changing the Laws of the Game to account for situations like this. When a pass is made for a player in an offside position, that should make them active in the play, regardless of whether they move for the ball or not. Defenders have to play the ball in that situation because they don't know if the player is offside from their vantage point. The defender shouldn't be punished for playing that ball by that action allowing the offside player to be now in an onside position. Luis Diaz was onside according to the letter of the LOTG, but not the spirit in my opinion and this should be changed going forward in interpretation.
Alexi Lalas and David Mosse shared thoughts on Gianni Infantino's appearance on The Herd, where he discussed the world's view on American soccer, growth of the game, U.S. Soccer's “golden era” and more. Following the USMNT's uninspiring performance at the CONCACAF Nations League, many unanswered questions remained about the squad and Starting XI. The guys made a list of players they see breaking into the lineup come World Cup 2026. This weekend in Europe, Johnny Cardoso faces off against Lamine Yamal's Barcelona. Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah take on Fiorentina at home, desperate for three points. Weston McKennie and Tim Weah match up against red hot Roma, unbeaten in Serie A through 2025. Antonee Robinson looks for a big victory over Liverpool on Sunday. Also this weekend stateside, the CONCACAF Champions Cup rolls on with LAFC and Inter Miami on FOX.
