I mean books printed on compressed cellulose, a medium that can give you a paper cut. The goal is not to force more reading. I read all day long. It's to get off screens. My digital subscriptions for news are on screens. Social media are on screens. And, of course, I read on screens what I write on screens. Pastor Sam Rainer preaches a verse-by-verse series through the entire book of Revelation. This sermon covers Revelation 14:1-20. For believers, death is not a monster to be feared but rather a means to an eternity with God. This chapter is about the beginning of Armageddon. Will you be taken down under the wrath of God? Or will you be taken up into the glory of heaven with Jesus? The choice is yours to make.
As Christians, we are called to spiritual battle and a courageous, triumphant faith. On today's PowerPoint, Pastor Jack Graham brings a powerful message on the glory we will witness when the battle is won and Christ has established His kingdom on earth. Randall Balmer is a scholar, professor, author, documentarian (Emmy nominee), and Episcopalian Priest. Ken and Dr. Balmer talk about his new book, Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right. They discuss notable players in the movement like Senator Mark Hatfield, Harold O.J. Brown, W.A. Criswell, Paul Weyrich, Ralph Reed, and Richard Land. In the right's celebration of Ronald Reagan, the religious right movement did not, as many believe, begin as pro-Life but rather defending evangelical institutions against the IRS which required compliance with the Civil Rights law. The genesis of the Religious Right had nothing to do with abortion - it was racial segregation. The bridge to understanding the election of Donald Trump is Ronald Raegan - as evangelicals abandoned Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan launched his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi at the Neshoba County Fair, confirming "State's Rights." The church basement classic, Thief in the Night. was inspired by Dr. Balmer's pastor father's sermon series on Revelation preached in his home church in Iowa in 1974. It's the story of The Rapture and Larry Norman's popular song "I wish we'd all been ready." College and graduate school introduced Dr. Balmer to the life of the mind. They remember Billy Graham's crisis of faith. In 1994, Dr. Balmer's book 1989 Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory became a PBS Documentary and featured Tony Campolo, Dolphus Weary, Fred Price, Bill Hybels, the black church in Mississippi, Hispanic Pentecostals, Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and many others. Today, in addition to his academic profession, Dr. Balmer is an Episcopalian priest - he shares the journey that led him to his ordination in the church. In Mark 6:45-52 Mark crafts the incredible account of Jesus passing by the disciples while walking on the water. The Eikon team explores this passage and discusses what Mark was communicating about Jesus to his readers as well as how and why the disciples were in very real danger. They then discuss how we can fall prey to the same factors that caused the disciples to miss what was happening right in front of them.

Welcome! The start-up National Museum of American Religion is dedicated to telling the profound story of what religion has done to America and what America has done to religion, convinced that understanding this history will help us all see the revolutionary nature and indispensability of the idea of religious freedom as a governing principle in the United States. Through the podcast series “Religion in the American Experience” scholars of American history share stories of religion exerting a vast influence, for good and ill, on the imperfect yet noble American experiment in self-government and its people. These are tales all Americans need to hear in order to better understand America and their role in its present & future. Just two days ago we saw the inauguration of a new president of the United States, and just the second Catholic president in our history. Knowing that religion is a profound shaper of men and women, Wednesday's peaceful transfer of power made us think that it would be fascinating, even beneficial to 21st century American progress, to learn more about American presidents and the religions that shaped them. Our panel this morning consists of (and panelists, please raise your hand when your name is read): Gary Scott Smith, who before his retirement, chaired the History Department at Grove City College and is the author or editor of eleven books including Faith and the Presidency: From George Washington to George W. Bush and Religion in the Oval Office: The Religious Lives of American Presidents. Smith is also an ordained minister in the PCUSA and served five congregations as an interim or stated supply pastor. Randall Balmer taught at Barnard College and Columbia University for twenty-seven years before moving to Dartmouth College in 2012, where he was named the Mandel Family Professor in the Arts & Sciences. He is the author of Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter. He is also an Episcopal priest. Balmer was nominated for an Emmy for scriptwriting and hosting the three-part PBS documentary Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory, an insightful and engaging journey into the world of conservative Christians in America, based on his book with the same title. Join us building The National Museum of American Religion in the nation's capital, to open in 2026, the 240th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's immortal words "Almighty God hath created the mind free." Most people have heard about what happened on land during the American Civil War, but the naval campaign at sea and in the interior was in some ways just as vital as any battle on land. Today your Captain and Executive Officer take a look at how the Naval strategy of both the Federal and Confederate Navy developed for those four years that would come to define the United States of America. The need to address revival and the vital role of the Holy Spirit is as relevant today as it has been throughout church history. As America falls deeper into depravity and further from God, the need to be awakened from ourspiritual slumber has never been greater. Our only hope is a mighty move of God's Spirit...a revival of the spiritual condition of His people.“The true saints of God, who have clear heads, and pure, warm hearts, have in all generations had to walk between the two extremes of cold formality on the one side, and wild, ranting fanaticism on the other. Dead formality and the false fire of fanaticism are both Satan's counterfeits, and he does not care into which extreme the soul plunges, just so he can prevent it from having that scriptural type of holiness which is ‘full of faith,' and ‘full of the Holy Spirit,' and ‘full of wisdom,' and of a ‘sound mind'."
Today we take a look at the epic ending that Moses places onto his epic book, Exodus. What does he show us there? The glory! What makes it hard for us to keep seeing it? What assures us that it is always with us? The Glory in Exodus promises through this Word to lead us all the way to glory.

Since the 2016 election heightened America's deep political divides, the mantle of patriotism has become fodder for a bitter tug-of-war. Is it patriotic to leak a presidential secret? To voice dissent during a national rite? Should a general running the White House be deferred to or defied? In this episode, Atlantic journalists Krishnadev Calamur and Sigal Samuel talk with Khizr Khan, the Gold Star father whose stirring speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention touched off a famous feud with the President-to-be, about what sacrifice means to him, and why America is worth it. We also hear from a couple veterans who offer their own perspectives on patriotism and military service. Pastor David considers two people who interacted with the 40 day old baby Jesus Christ in the temple, Simeon and Anna the prophetess. Both were devout believers in God who anxiously and eagerly anticipated the revelation of the Messiah - or the Christ - that had been prophesied in the Old Testament. By the providence of God and direction of the Holy Spirit, they both saw the fulfillment of those prophecies - they saw the Lord's Christ with their own eyes.

"...God's glory, majesty, and holiness demand that those who serve Him also must be holy. Churches today likewise need a vision of God as holy in their midst, the King and Judge, the Lord Almighty." (Life in the Spirit Study Bible) Several people - mentioned in the Bible - got a glimpse of God's terrible majesty and had a notable reaction. Isaiah was one of them. Seeing God's terrible majesty caused him to ultimately cry out for cleansing. Oh! How we - as the Church - need that same vision today!
