A man in Utah, identified as Jacob "Jake" Schmitt, recently survived a serious incident in the Uinta Mountains by crawling for 11 hours to safety after crashing his side-by-side vehicle. The Incident and the Fight for Survival while spotting for deer with his dog "Buddy", Schmitt's vehicle reportedly lost control and rolled "15-20 times" down a mountainside. He sustained a broken leg, fractured ankles, and broken ribs in the crash. With his phone lost and only the light on Buddy's collar for illumination, Schmitt made the courageous decision to crawl down the mountain, knowing he faced a fight for survival. He reportedly splinted his leg himself before starting his agonizing journey. Buddy the hero dog throughout the 11-hour ordeal, Buddy, a 6-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, stayed by Schmitt's side. Schmitt credits Buddy with helping him through the ordeal, explaining how his dog would heel when needed, providing light and motivation to keep going.  Rescue and recovery by day break, Schmitt reached his truck and drove to a diner in Oakley, where a staff member called 911. He was taken to Park City Hospital, where he remained for four days before being discharged and returning home with Buddy. A GoFundMe page was set up to help with medical expenses and had raised over $15,000 as of July 31st. Lessons learned Schmitt's story emphasizes the importance of preparedness, including being able to perform self-rescue and carrying essential supplies, even for seemingly short trips into the backcountry. He advises others to "learn how to do everything with nothing". In recent years, there's been a stark uptick in the level of violence and hate crimes that Asian Americans have experienced, but the “precarity of the Asian American experience is not new,” Michael Luo tells David Remnick. Luo is a longtime New Yorker editor, and the author of a new book about the Chinese American experience. He looks at how tensions over labor—with native-born workers often blaming immigrants for their exploitation by business interests—intersected with racial and religious prejudice, culminating in episodes of extraordinary violence and laws that denied immigrants civil rights and excluded new arrivals from Asia. “The way politicians, craven politicians, talk about immigrants today could be just torn from the nineteenth century,” he points out. “I do think that the ‘stranger' label is still there.” But Luo also uncovers the extraordinary support of Chinese Americans from Frederick Douglass, who argued extensively for the immigrants' political participation and civil rights. “Asian American history is American history,” Luo says. “I want all the dads who are reading about World War Two, . . . who are interested in Civil War literature, to read about this different racial conflagration.” Luo's book is “Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America.”
