In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Thomas and Frank revisit the 1999 sci-fi comedy classic Galaxy Quest. They break down why the movie has earned cult status, analyze how it parodies and celebrates Star Trek and fandom itself, and share insights from the 2019 documentary Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary. From Tim Allen's heartfelt arc to Alan Rickman's legendary performance and the layered comedy, the duo unpacks what makes this film timeless. They also debate whether Galaxy Quest belongs in their Top 100 Movies list and tease what's next for the franchise. Every main character undergoes a clear arc, moving from cynicism to heroism. Alan Rickman's subtle performance stands out even in a broad comedy. The film smartly deconstructs sci-fi tropes while respecting their place in the genre. Galaxy Quest was ahead of its time in showing the value and meaning of geek culture. The 2019 documentary Never Surrender deepens appreciation for the film's legacy. The upcoming Galaxy Quest series has potential if it honors the original's spirit. Memorable Quotes "You deserve that. And for me, at my best, I need to feel this in my soul to give that to you." (Frank on Alan Rickman's final catchphrase scene) "If the cast of the show was bigger fans of their own show, they would have survived better." (Thomas on how fandom knowledge matters in Galaxy Quest's story) "Tim Allen went from Home Improvement uncertainty to being Buzz Lightyear. This movie came right at that transition." (Frank on Tim Allen's career at the time of Galaxy Quest) "Every conversation moves the story forward. This movie is so well-paced and tight." Hello to you listening all over America on this Memorial Day our nation's foremost day of remembrance.Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. On this solemn day of reflection we honor and mourn the men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country in peacetime and war. Today we are at war. Our Democracy, our constitution, our rule of law, and even our people are under assault. Is there reason to fight, to hope? You bet there is!The first weeks of Churchill's Prime Ministership were clouded by the fall of France and the surrender of the Belgian Army, with repercussions for the Western alliance. To delay the German advance towards Britain, Churchill ordered expeditionary forces to retreat towards the port of Dunkirk to allow an Allied evacuation that lasted for nine days. Churchill's descriptions of events were more akin to a war reporter than a political statesman as he explained in great detail to his fellow members the bravery and ingenuity of the British forces in the face of the German war machine. Despite the success of the operation there was still a loss of over 30,000 men and vast amounts of artillery.Yet in the face of such adversity and sacrifice Churchill used his voice and his unshakeable determination to make a rallying cry to not just his fellow countrymen but also the beleaguered French in this historic speech delivered to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 4, 1940: “We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!”Click HERE to listen to Churchill's voice and take in the unforgettable images that fortified his words.Click HERE to access the Transcript of Churchill's speechClick HERE to access: The Miracle of Dunkirk Click HERE to access the 85th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk with 64 of the original Little Ships heading back to the Dunkirk beaches.CTA: As you go about your day keep in mind that we Americans are not lost as long as we organize and fight together. Have you ever felt the crushing weight of doubt when every day is a battle with your own mind? In this episode, Gabe (who lives with bipolar) and Dr. Nicole (a board certified psychiatrist) cut through the BS and get real about staying on track with bipolar treatment. They dive into moments when giving up seems like the easier option and Gabe recalls a painful wake-up call from a friend who wasn't holding back their anger — a moment that ignited a drive to prove everyone wrong. Dr. Nicole breaks down why even the smallest victories, like getting out of bed or planning a future getaway, can mean everything. With no sugarcoating, they explore the raw truth behind why fighting isn't just for the dark days — it's a constant, everyday challenge. This episode is for anyone who's ever wondered how to find the strength to keep moving forward when life feels overwhelming. “I did not want to lay down and die. My core philosophical values and belief systems is that this is all there is. Whatever I do with it, that's my life. That will be how I'm remembered. That is what people will see. Whatever joy or suffering or pain or happiness or success or laughter or connections, this is all there is. And if I just sit at home and do nothing, then I will just be remembered as the guy who sat at home and did nothing. And I don't want to be remembered that way.” ~Gabe Howard, Host Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are available directly from the author with free swag included! Among his many accolades, Gabe received an official resolution from the Governor of Ohio naming him an “Everyday Hero,” and had the distinct honor of speaking at Oxford University in England. To learn more about Gabe, or to book him for your next event, please visit his website, gabehoward.com. You can also follow him on Instagram and TikTok at @askabipolar. Our host, Dr. Nicole Washington, is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to enroll in the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa. Since completing her residency training, Dr. Nicole has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental health conditions, and high performing professionals. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking, and writing, she seeks to provide education to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric conditions. Find out more at DrNicolePsych.com. Hi, everybody! Here's PART 2 of my interview with RIK EMMETT, recorded live in the cozy confines of his studio loft. We take a deep dive into his legendary career as the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist extraordinaire for Canadian rock icons TRIUMPH!Our conversation kicks off with Rik's early days in Toronto, his decision to pursue music over sports, and his fateful first meeting with Mike Levine and Gil Moore, where he immediately recognized Gil's sharp business acumen and Mike's record production skills. Rik generously shares memories from each TRIUMPH album and how major support from US radio and MTV/MuchMusic impacted the band's success. We also explore his incredible songwriting contributions, including classics like “Lay It on the Line,” “Hold On,” “Fight the Good Fight,” “Ordinary Man,” “Magic Power,” “Somebody's Out There” and “Never Surrender.”More than 40 years after exploding onto the scene, one thing remains crystal clear: Triumph's legacy lives on. The Canadian hard-rock power trio stands out as a visionary, uniquely influential force—known for their virtuosic musicianship, soaring melodies, electrifying live shows and powerful songwriting with a positive message. It was an absolute honour to interview Rik and we had plenty of laughs along the way! Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
RICHARD HOLTORF WANTS TO BE GOP CHAIRMAN And he's on today at 1pm with Danielle Neuschwanger, who is running on his "slate" for the top party positions. When Danielle ran for Governor I liked her very much until she left the party and ran a sure to lose campaign as the Constitution Party's nominee. I told her then this was a HUGE mistake that would damage her political future greatly. I was right. She's now trying to make a comeback, which I was initially kind of excited about, but then I saw this last night. It's a post by Natalee Tennant who is one of the founders of Never Surrender, a GOP group in Colorado. She says Danielle used her to try to get on with Britta Horn's candidacy. She also posted audio of the phone calls she had with Danielle about supporting Britta. I'll ask Danielle about this today. Unfortunately this is overshadowing Richard's candidacy among the rank and file I'm hearing from. Slates are bad in everything except school board races where they are necessary to fight teacher's unions. They join me at 1 today.

This week we took it to the people, and the people agreed! Not just the people; we got the ok from The Chairman, Mighty K, and the entire 51st state of Canada! Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistake: TRIUMPH Shoulda Been Huge-er!!!”. This is part one of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the rock n' roll pantheon. They also happen to have Bonafide Guitar God in the band that rarely gets the praise he deserves! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we've ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as Titans or Rock and thus: Huge-er!!! Eh?Songs this week include:Triumph - “Street Fighter / Street Fighter Reprise” from Triumph (1976)Triumph - “Little Texas Shaker” from Rock & Roll Machine (1977)Triumph - “American Girls” from Just A Game (1979)Triumph - “Tear The Roof Off” from Progressions Of Power (1980)Triumph - “Allied Forces” from Allied Forces (1981)Triumph - “All The Way” from Never Surrender (1982)Triumph - “Fight The Good Fight” from Live At The US Festival (1983)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
On the show today we chat with actor and up and coming filmmaker Bob Peavler! Now Bob is a veteran and has found an outlet for his TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and couldn't be happier. Four years ago he started his new journey with writing, acting and now filmmaking! He has written two books and his newest, Mayhem: The Retribution is in early production and fundraising! His goal? To make a proof of concept for a feature film! As a newer filmmaker, we couldn't help but bombard him with our experiences and hopefully... give him SOMETHING to utilize to help his crowdfunding efforts and get his film made. Bob is a great guy and we know you'll love him so sit back and enjoy our wonderful conversation with Mr. Bob Peavler!

Today on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast we go back 119 years and introduce you to a story by an author we have never featured on the podcast before. The Man Who Did Things Twice and a second story by Don Mark Lemon, The Spider and the Fly. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Don Mark Lemon was born in Arizona in September 1877, he wrote 15 short stories and 1 novel, The Scarlet Planet, which was published in 1930.His first published short story, Doctor Goldman, can be found in the December 1900 issue of The Black Cat which launched in 1895. The Black Cat sold for five cents and encouraged amateur writers to submit stories. As the story goes the Jack London novel The Call of the Wild might never have been written if not for The Black Cat. London wasn't having success as a writer and was about to give up but then he sold a story, A Thousand Deaths, to The Black Cat in 1899 and The Call of the Wild was published four years later! Never give up, Never Surrender!!The first Don Mark Lemon story on the podcast won a $100 prize, which would be worth about $3,500 today, and appeared in the June 1905 issue of The Black Cat on page 39, The Man Who Did Things Twice by Don Mark Lemon…Our second story by Don Mark Lemon was published in The Thrill Book, a short lived publication which began and ceased publication in 1919. From the August 1st issue of The Thrill Book let's turn to page 109 for The Spider and the Fly by Don Mark Lemon…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Harry Harrison is back with two stories from the late 1950s, Welcoming Committee and The Robots Strike.☕ Buy Me a Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/scottsVFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLostSciFiPodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/lost_sci_fi=========================== ❤️ ❤️ Thanks to All Our Listeners Who Bought Us a Coffee$200 Someone$75 James Van Maanenberg$50 Anonymous Listener$25 Jeff Lussenden, Fred Sieber, Anne, Craig Hamilton, Dave Wiseman, Bromite Thrip, Marwin de Haan, Future Space Engineer, Fressie, Kevin Eckert, Stephen Kagan, James Van Maanenberg, Irma Stolfo, Josh Jennings, Leber8tr, Conrad Chaffee, Anonymous Listener$15 Someone, Carolyn Guthleben, Patrick McLendon, Curious Jon, Buz C., Fressie, Anonymous Listener$10 Anonymous Listener$5 Timothy Buckley, Andre'a, Martin Brown, Ron McFarlan, Tif Love, Chrystene, Richard Hoffman, Anonymous Listener Hosted on Acast. Part of Thriving is embracing both the wins, as well as the losses.Homestead Update:My Spring garden has failed, for the most part.I usually sow plants and then spread lettuce and kale seed around to act as a cover crop - hey, lettuce is a companion plant of everything. This year hardly anything came up. The starter plants that I planted also did not thrive. Why? Lots of rain.In Kansas we do not get "April showers bring May flowers."We get May and June thunderstorms. Almost all of our annual rain comes in May and June. This year it rained almost every other day in May. We even had a mini-tornado pass just south of us and we got 8-10 inches of rain that week. Should have been a Spring bonanza of crops.I added a couple of truckloads of compost from the nursery. The compost is worse-than-usual municipal compost. The perennials saved the day - plantain, walking onion, bloody dock sorrel. They all did wonderfully. Some trees thrived. Some did not.My apple grafts are all thriving. Nearly 80% success so far, which is rare. But the chestnut seedlings from last year didn't come out of dormancy. The 5 year chestnut trees are looking sickly, with half the branches with no leaves. I need to heavily fertilize and see if they recover.Side Hustle Update on GrowNutTrees.I sold hundreds of $ of elderberry on FB marketplace.I am adding black lace elderberry for next Fall and in 2025.Episode website: Ep. 132 - Never Give Up, Never SurrenderIf you like this content and the podcast, here is how you can support the podcast and my Thriving empire of side hustles:Shoot me a tip on Venmo or CashApp @ThrivingtheFuture.Go to the Stuff page on Thriving the Future site and buy something.OR - click on one of the Amazon links on the Stuff page and then buy your other stuff that you want. Seeds and trees have “memory”. They thrived and reproduced in a certain climate.Often when you buy chestnut trees, seeds, or plants online, you have to buy from nurseries in the Northeast or Southeast US, or the Pacific Northwest.Take it from us, trees and plants grown in those climates do not do well in Kansas. So buy Elderberry, pecan, hazelnut seedlings, and red mulberry seedlings - all adapted to the Midwest. In this episode of the "What are We Doing" podcast, we embark on a wild journey through the curious case of the NYPD Dance Team. As your intrepid host, Levi, I'll be your guide through the twists and turns of this bizarre tale, where officers' dance moves take center stage, leaving crime-fighting duties in the dust. Strap in, folks, because this rollercoaster ride is about to get wild! Picture this: the New York City Police Department, facing criticism sharper than a freshly sharpened pencil, all because their dance crew decided to make a splash on a local TV station. Now, you might be wondering, "Levi, what's the big deal with a little dance routine?" Well, my dear listeners, it seems some folks are more concerned with catching criminals than perfecting the latest choreography. Critics wasted no time taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air their grievances. One user quipped, "Mayor Eric Adams cut an additional $100 million from education this year, but he somehow found money for the NYPD to promote themselves with a dance team." Ouch! Another chimed in, "Fire the NYPD dance team and hire more cops." Talk about cutting straight to the chase! But wait, it gets juicier. Nicole Parker, a former FBI agent and Fox News Contributor, didn't hold back her thoughts, calling the whole ordeal "outrageous" and "offensive." As a woman in law enforcement, she found the dance team's antics downright degrading. "I am embarrassed," she declared, her words echoing like a siren through the streets of the Big Apple. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Levi, isn't there a time and place for a little fun?" And you'd be right! But when violent crime is skyrocketing faster than a New York minute, maybe it's time to trade in the dance shoes for some detective work. After all, as Parker pointed out, taxpayers aren't exactly footing the bill for a Broadway musical starring New York's finest. To make matters even more perplexing, the NYPD Dance Team isn't just a one-hit wonder. Oh no, they're part of a whole brigade of sports teams, including boxing, paintball, and rugby. It's like a real-life version of "Police Academy," minus the slapstick comedy and with a lot more questionable decisions. But wait, there's more! Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier, enter stage left: Donald J. Trump's latest venture into the world of fashion. Yes, you heard that right. The former president, never one to shy away from the spotlight, decided to dip his toes into the sneaker game. Behold, the "Never Surrender" sneakers, a gilded masterpiece that screams "Trump" louder than a tweetstorm at 3 AM. With an American flag motif and a hefty price tag of $399, these kicks are more than just footwear – they're a statement. A statement that says, "I may not be in the White House anymore, but I'm still making waves." But let's not get too distracted by the glitz and glamour of the Trump empire. After all, we've got a crime-fighting dance squad to dissect! Critics continue to sound the alarm, pointing out that while the NYPD is busy busting moves, crime rates are on the rise. It's a classic case of misplaced priorities, like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic while the iceberg looms large on the horizon. ********** Disclaimer: We must also emphasize that the information contained in this video has been produced with no warranty, expressed or implied, regarding the validity, accuracy, reliability, completeness, legality, or usefulness of what is said or expressed.
