For 300 years Mexico was known as "New Spain" ruled by a viceroy in the name of the Spanish monarch. The port of Acapulco became the New World terminus of the transpacific trade with the Philippines via the Manila galleon. Located in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence in Vatican City, The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus, who had it built during the 1470s. Since that time, it has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame lies mainly in the frescoes that decorate its interior by a team of Renaissance painters including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, and most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment covering the whole altar wall, both by Michelangelo. During the 17th century, the city of Madrid was the political centre of the Spanish monarchy, and the capital of Spain. New Spain was a major seat of Spanish power and the source of its wealth. This wealth made Spain the dominant power in Europe and the envy of England, France, and the Netherlands. Colonial Spain's silver mining and crown mints created high quality coins known as the silver peso or Spanish dollar that became the currency of Spanish America (including Mexico) and a widely used global currency. In March of 1976, a young woman was discovered, with no obvious trauma, in the Harpeth River in Nashville; she carried on her a picture of a little boy, and a trail that led to witnesses who said she'd hitchhiked with a mysterious friend, all the way from Minnesota—but that trail led nowhere. Without the possibility of DNA testing, the best shot of identifying “Sherry” Jane Doe is using her extremely accurate forensic art, and the details she shared of her life—and, perhaps, a daughter that ties her to South Carolina. The Fall Line has commissioned new isolated forensic art of her teeth to share with the public in hopes that this information will aid in identification; you can see this image and all others associated with the case on our website. In a spontaneous episode I discussed five different aspects of the business of podcasting – from using AI to “audio or video?”, to leveraging the star power and engagement power of podcasting. You'll hear from: Michael Kaye, Director of Brand & Communications for OkCupid, an online dating app; Brandon Reed, Host, formerly tired dad, and creator of 12 Hour Sound Machines, a viral podcast that helps people sleep; Bona Rai, COO and Co-founder of Capsho, the tool that helped E.B. use AI to generate these very show notes (!); Chris Whitman, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of GlassBox Media, think 'music label-meets-podcast marketing machine'; A.J. Feliciano, Head of The Roost Podcast Network from Warner Bros Discovery, that started the groundswell of podcasts leveraging video and has his finger on the pulse of monetizing best practices to meet the consumer where they're consuming content. It's five inspiring chats that reveal the brilliant possibilities of audio and video for the future including: How OkCupid leverages podcasting for success - earned or owned? The business model behind the 12 Hour Sound Machines podcast What Capsho is, and how this new tool taps AI to help podcasters save time How GlassBox Media cracks the code on growing podcast awareness and ups the value of creator IP A spontaneous interview at the Sounds Profitable event in Austin When is a podcast a video and a video a podcast? How should brands embrace the consumer's content journey? The Roost tells all. Chapter Summaries/Time Codes: [00:00:01] This is episode 5 of Insider Interviews, with five different guests included. Each of my guests spoke about a different area of the business of podcasting. This was recorded spontaneously right after a panel I conducted during SXSW for Sounds Profitable, featuring one of the panelists and four members of the audio .... [00:01:42] Michael Kaye, director of communications at OkCupid is naturally inclined towards earned, but says: "We've seen tremendous impact from both podcast advertising and from earned, pitching our experts to appear on other shows. In 2023, we'll be looking again at podcast advertising." [00:03:57] Brandon Reed's podcast is called 12-Hour Sound Machines. It was created when his newborn couldn't sleep through the night, now enjoying about 300,000 downloads a day. Reed started by first directly selling to brands, but now he's on Megaphone, in the Spotify Audience Network so programmatic sales is a really good solution for him. Hear his explanation of why the moments before falling asleep are actually a powerful moment for advertisers.... [00:09:12] Bona Rai is a co-founder of Capsho, a product that uses AI to tap audio files to create SEO-optimized content for podcasts. At just 10 months old they're already embracing a more robust version of Capsho 2.0 coming this Spring. [Note: I tried out Capsho 1.0 for most of these show notes, with an added “human touch!”] [00:14:15] Chris Whitman describes GlassBox Media like a record label for podcast hosts. Its goal is to grow the value of the IP for the creators across any sort of opportunity from a revenue perspective. "Now we represent around 65 shows, with no end in sight.” [00:18:58] A.J. Feliciano explains that The Roost podcast network is a video-first podcast network. “We have about 90 shows, a third of them are owned and operated. What is it about multiplatform distribution on podcasts that makes it so worthwhile for other podcasters?” [00:21:18] Our thinking around YouTube is that it's less that it's about video, and more about the platform itself. Who's your target audience and where have they been conditioned to go to just consume content? And that's why we're seeing podcast-like content bringing such big numbers there. [00:23:54] The Roost podcast will always have a foundation in audio. It can have video, it can be on YouTube. Heck,
Christopher Seeds is Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine. Chris is the Author of Death By Prison, a book about Life without Parole In recent decades, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole (LWOP) has developed into a distinctive penal form in the United States, one firmly entrenched in US policy-making, judicial and prosecutorial decision-making, correctional practice, and public discourse. LWOP is now a routine practice, but how it came to be so remains in question. Fifty years ago, imprisonment of a person until death was an extraordinary punishment; today, it accounts for the sentences of an increasing number of prisoners in the United States. What explains the shifts in penal practice and social imagination by which we have become accustomed to imprisoning people until death without any reevaluation or expectation of release? Combining a wide historical lens with detailed state- and institutional-level research, Death by Prison offers a provocative new foundation for questioning this deeply problematic practice that has escaped close scrutiny for too long. This week's review is onEverything, Everywhere DailyThis U.S podcast is a daily education show from Glassbox Media that gives crash courses on a variety of topics from any given subject including but not limited to history, geography, mathematics, biographies, and technology. It was launched in July of 2020 by its host Gary Arndt, the world traveler, beloved blogger, and photographer. His blog has received mentions and awards from many top journalism organizations such as Time, National Geographic, and the Lowell Thomas Awards. Since its debut it has gained over 10,000,000 downloads with listeners in almost every country. Apple Podcasts has 4.8 out of 5 stars with 393 ratings. Episodes are on average about 12 minutes long and so far there are 911 episodes. Some of my favorites include “Potemkin Villages'' and “The Greatest Buildings Never Built.” There's even a completion club for those who manage to finish the surreal backlog. Despite this brief length the podcast is jam- packed with information and often more thorough than shows five times its length. With so many episodes there's bound to be the rare error but Arndt mentions corrections gracefully when necessary. The show also has an extensive website with every episode broken down by release date, a detailed about page, photography, and coverage of every place he's visited. Theme song is short and the production quality got better with just a little bit of time. It is well-paced and its bite-sized 10 minute tidbits mean it's great for kids who love learning.. Or even the ones who don't. Similar pods: A Thousand Things to Talk About, 60 Second Science, and TEDx ShortsAll right, guys, that's all for this week but remember if you want to see the cover art, sources or the written transcript for this episode be sure to check out the show notes. You can also send us an email at themastercastpodlist@gmail.com. There you can tell us if you have music you would like played on the show or submit a podcast to be recommended. This week's music came from Matt Baer. The song featured was “Older.” For more from Matt Baer find them on Facebook, Twitter, soundcloud, or Instagram. Links will be in the description as well. BIO: David Segura is an accomplished entrepreneur and investor. He currently serves as the CEO of Glassbox Media. This podcast platform enables Podcast Hosts to grow their brand revenue and new listener base with direct investment and technology support. STORY: David invested in and joined a startup in New York. The company was growing fast, and after their Series A funding, they got convinced by the lead investor to expand to London and other international cities prematurely. The company could not sustain the growth. LEARNING: Be deliberate with your growth plans. Focus on quality growth that you can build on. “Be deliberate with your growth plans.”David Segura Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/david-segura-91822a1/ (David Segura) is an accomplished entrepreneur and investor. He currently serves as the CEO of https://glassboxmedia.com/ (Glassbox Media). This podcast platform enables Podcast Hosts to grow their brand revenue and new listener base with direct investment and technology support. David previously founded Giant Media, serving as the CEO from launch through acquisition. The company was an early Video Advertising Exchange that included AMEX, L'Oreal, and Dollar Shave Club clients. David launched the company in 2009, and an AdTech roll-up acquired it in 2014. David is also an active startup investor with upwards of 60 investments. Worst investment everDavid got interested in a startup company based in New York and invested in 2017. He believed that the genesis of that business was terrific, and the founder was brilliant. The founder even convinced him to get on board as an investor and as the chief strategy officer. The company was doing well in New York, and they decided to expand to other cities. To do so, the company had to raise funds. They raised $12 million in their Series A, and the lead investor was British, and they wanted the company to devote a lot of that capital to expand into London as soon as possible. The data indicated that they should double, even triple down in New York and not expand internationally. David tried convincing the founder that expanding internationally was not a strategic decision and they should instead push back. But they didn't. They just went with the flow and used a significant amount of the capital raised to expand internationally. Not just London, but other places as well. The fast growth was too much for the company, and it couldn't handle the capacity. Lessons learnedBe deliberate with your growth plans. Sometimes it's prudent to slow it down to be more sustainable. When investing in a startup, it's ok not to know what you're doing or be a little scared. Identify the problem holding your business back and solve it. If you keep ignoring the elephant in the room, you'll regret it. Andrew's takeawaysGrowth, in and of itself, is not everything; it's got to be quality, growth that you can build on. The growth that goes beyond the capacity of the operations to deliver what you're promising is not good. Whenever you're expanding, locally or internationally, take the time to look at the risk and return. Actionable adviceWhether you're the founder, an angel investor, or even a VC, continually evaluate what the company is doing. Be honest with the senior executives and yourself and figure out ways to minimize risk. A lot of times, that means just focusing and narrowing down. No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsDavid's goal for the next 12 months is to grow Glassbox Media into a US household name that creators and podcast hosts think of when they need help to scale their audience and revenue.
