Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops. Our reading presents the New Testament book of Matthew 2:1-12 followed by the classic carol “We Three Kings.” Three Kings' Day is a Christian feast that annually falls on January 6th (also known as Epiphany). Annual feast honors the power and significance of the name "Jesus," which means "God saves" or "Savior" in Hebrew/Aramaic. Observed during first week of January using varying dates & names by Catholics and some Protestant denominations (Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran), the invocation is rooted in the biblical account where the angel Gabriel instructs both Mary and Joseph to name the child Jesus. While the feast focuses on the primary name "Jesus," the Bible uses many other venerated names and titles to describe Christ's nature and mission. Devotion to the Holy Name was popularized in the 15th century by the Franciscan friar Saint Bernardine of Siena, who encouraged people to place the Greek monogram of Jesus' name, IHS (from the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus), on their doors. The feast was extended to the entire Church in 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. Ee150. The Sagadahoc Settlement—also known as the Popham Colony—was established in 1607 and was located in the present-day town of Phippsburg, Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was founded a few months after its rival, the colony at Jamestown. The Popham Colony was the second settlement in the region that would eventually become known as New England. The first colony was St. Croix Island, near what is now the town of Calais. St. Croix Island was settled initially in June 1604, then moved in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain to the Bay of Fundy. The Popham Colony was the vanguard of a new colonization model for the English, the result of rights stripped from nobleman and redistributed to new corporate entities. After years of sailors kidnapping natives off the coast of modern day Maine to train as interpreters, Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Sir John Popham returned them hoping the fair treatment given to their captives, will foster good will with their native communities. January First is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics (meaning that Mass attendance is required), also observed by some Protestants (Anglicans & Lutherans) as a related feast. On this day, the Church proclaims Mary as Theotokos (God-bearer), affirming that the Son she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit is truly God and truly man. The Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is thus a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st and marks the octave of Christmas, celebrating her divine motherhood. The Wild West was a rugged and untamed era filled with legendary cowboys, outlaws, and pioneers carving their place in history. From dusty saloons echoing with the clink of spurs to thrilling showdowns at high noon, this iconic period brought tales of cattle drives, gold rushes, and frontier justice. Life on the prairie was harsh, as settlers braved scorching deserts and lawless territories in search of fortune and freedom. With iconic figures like Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, and Annie Oakley, the Old West remains a fascinating chapter in American history, where grit and adventure defined the spirit of the western frontier. The word testament in the expression "New Testament" refers to a new covenant that Christians believe completes or fulfils the Mosaic covenant or the old covenant that the national god of Israel made with the people of Israel on Mount Sinai through Moses, described in the books of the Old Testament. Christians traditionally view this new covenant as being prophesied in the Hebrew Bible's Book of Jeremiah. The first book of the New Testament of the Bible and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Matthew tells how Israel's messiah (Christ), Jesus, comes to his people (the Jews) but is rejected by them and how, after his resurrection, he sends the disciples to the gentiles instead. Matthew wishes to emphasize that the Jewish tradition should not be lost in a church that was increasingly becoming gentile. The gospel reflects the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist's community and the other Jews, particularly with its sharp criticism of the scribes and Pharisees with the position that through their rejection of Christ, the Kingdom of Heaven has been taken away from them and given instead to the church. The gospel is anonymous. Traditionally attributed to the Apostle Matthew, the predominant scholarly view is that it was written in the last quarter of the first century by an anonymous Jew familiar with technical legal aspects of scripture. Most scholars think Matthew used the Gospel of Mark and the hypothetical sayings Gospel Q (which consists of the material Matthew shares in common with Luke) and is the product of the second generation of the Christian movement, though it draws on the memory of the first generation of the disciples of Jesus. Believed to be the earliest extant Gospel and the second of the four canonical Gospels and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Mark’s gospel tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, the burial of his body, and the discovery of his empty tomb. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker, though it does not mention a miraculous birth or divine pre-existence. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. All this is in keeping with the Christian interpretation of prophecy, which is believed to foretell the fate of the messiah as suffering servant. E167. A bright, icy, small Solar System body passes by Earth and is observed around the world every 76 years. Halley used Isaac Newton's law of gravity to calculate the orbits of the comets. He concluded that these comets were actually the same comet returning on a long elliptical orbit around the sun.
