STORY OF AMERICA - Experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing, while in his early thirties. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. Along the way, he took detailed notes, wrote an illustrated report on what he learned on this trip, and gave this secret account—entitled ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico 1599 to 1601’—to his King, Henry the fourth, who rewarded Champlain with an annual pension. In 1603, King Henry IV wanted the French to begin settling in the New World in hopes that wealth could be brought back to France. So he sent an expedition to locate a place on the American continent to establish a colony and fur trade settlement. Although he held no official title at the time, Samuel de Champlain would be among the men who would take part in this great venture. Bacon's Rebellion, a revolt against the colonial government of Virginia led by Nathaniel Bacon in 1676, was fueled by frontier tensions with Native Americans and grievances against Governor William Berkeley. STORY OF AMERICA - An isolated small Atlantic sandbar situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia is notable for its role in the early history of America when France initiated the first attempts to settle on Sable Island. The Viceroy of New France, Marquis de La Roche, sent soldiers and settlers (mainly criminals) to the Island to establish a fishery and fur trading post. When the convicts mutinied, they were left on the tree-less and stone-less Sable Island. Most of the settlers died, but a few managed to survive in mud dwellings for 5 years before being returned to France. Poorly planned, the settlement failed and was abandoned in 1603. Host Mark Vinet's special guest Eric Yanis of The Other States of America podcast tells this intriguing story. In 1682, Robert de La Salle embarked on an expedition to navigate the Mississippi River from its northern source near the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. During this expedition, La Salle and his party constructed a small fort along the Big Muddy called Fort Prud'homme in West Tennessee. Thereafter, he ultimately reached the mouth of the Mississippi, where he formally claimed the vast River Valley territory for France, naming it La Louisiane or Louisiana, in honor of Saint Louis and King Louis the Fourteenth. La Salle also encountered various Native American tribes along his journey, including the Natchez, whose contentious relationship with the French over the ensuing decades led to a dramatic climax in 1729; highlighting the complex interactions between European adventurers and Native American populations during this period of exploration and colonization. Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was an English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen, Elizabeth the First. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". The Mississippi River was explored by French adventurer and fur trader René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. He explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, and the Mississippi River. He is best known for an early 1682 expedition in which he canoed the lower Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico; there, he claimed the Mississippi River basin for France after giving it the name La Louisiane (Louisiana), in honor of Saint Louis and Louis XIV. The Nativity of John the Baptist is a Christian high-ranking liturgical feast day observed annually on 24 June by the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism. It is one of only two feast days marking a saint's earthly birth (the other being the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 September); all other saint’s days mark their deaths or some other important event. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke which states that John was born six months before Jesus; thus, the feast of John the Baptist’s birth was fixed in the 4th century A.D. on 24 June, six months before Christmas. In the Roman calendar, 24 June was the date of the summer solstice, and Saint John's Eve is closely associated with Midsummer festivities in Europe. Traditions in France & Quebec, include bonfires (Saint John's fires), feasting, processions, church services, and gathering wild plants. In 1682, the Mississippi River was explored by French adventurer and fur trader René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. He explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, and the Mississippi River. He is best known for an early 1682 expedition in which he canoed the lower Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico; there, on April 9, 1682, he claimed the Mississippi River basin for France after giving it the name La Louisiane, in honor of Saint Louis and Louis XIV. El Dorado is applied to a legendary New World story in which precious stones were found in fabulous abundance along with gold coins. The legend of the Seven Cities of Gold became mixed with the stories of El Dorado, which was sometimes said to be one of the seven cities. Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke fame would later take up the search for the mythical kingdom. Francisco Vazquez de Coronado was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition from Mexico through the southwestern USA in search of the fabled Cities of Cibola in the sixteenth century. He had hoped to reach the continent’s El Dorado located throughout the pueblos of the New Mexico Territory. E128.
