Appointed governor by the Society of Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, Francois-Marie Perrot clashed with Governor General of New France Frontenac in 1675. When Sulpician Abbot François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon (1641–1679) intervened on behalf of Perrot, Frontenac referred the matter the Court of King Louis XIV in France. Fénelon, a French Sulpician priest who was an eloquent preaching missionary in New France was eventually forbidden to remain in Canada due to his political interference and ultimately withdrew from the Sulpicians. The mission he founded a mission in the Kenté (Quinte) region of Lake Ontario left no trace, but his name is remembered at Fenelon Falls. He died at the age of 38, with his final whereabouts unknown. STORY OF AMERICA — English investors who funded the establishment of the Virginia colony may have been concerned with the glory of England and the spreading of the Anglican religion to the natives, but above all, they demanded that the new enterprise turn a profit. Tobacco eventually proved to be the economic base for Virginia for the next two centuries. The original Jamestown colonists had never intended to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local natives to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England. Lack of access to fresh water and a severe drought crippled the limited agricultural production of the Virginia colonists. Combined with the lack of trade with the Native Americans and the failure of supply ships, the colony found itself with far too little food for the upcoming winter. Francois-Marie Perrot (1644-1691) was appointed governor of Montreal by a royal commission in 1670 until 1684. He married Intendant Jean Talon’s niece and through his influence obtained the appointment as governor from the Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, succeeding Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. In 1672, he was granted the island that now bears his name (Île Perrot to the west of Montreal Island) as a seignory. Later, Perrot was the governor of Acadia from 1684-87. Throughout his life, Samuel de Champlain was a loyal Catholic soldier. As a young man, he learned to fight with the firearms of his time, acquiring this practical knowledge when serving with the army during the later stages of France's religious wars involving the Holy Catholic League in Brittany from 1594 to 98. During this time he attained the rank of Captain. His soldiering skills, along with his talents as a Navigator and Geographer, would later serve him well during his many adventures in North America. STORY OF AMERICA — In 1607, after many years of unsuccessful American settlements, the English founded the colony of Jamestown in Virginia. Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized. In his early thirties, experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. One of the most known parables of Jesus in the New Testament, "The Prodigal Son" refers to the story in the Gospel of Luke (15:11-32) about a son who squanders his inheritance and later returns to his father, who welcomes him back with a celebration, despite the anger and jealousy of his brother. STORY OF AMERICA — Having obtained backing to establish an English colony on the North American Atlantic coastline, Bartholomew Gosnold set sail in a small bark named the Concord in 1602, with thirty-two on board towards Martha's Vineyard and Provincetown. Gosnold (born in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England) pioneered a direct sailing route due west from the Azores to the New World in what later became New England. He and his crew explored the coastline with the intention of establishing a colony and small fishing outpost in the southern part of Massachusetts on Cuttyhunk Island. The USS Huron was an iron-hulled gunboat of the United States Navy; a screw steamer with full-rig auxiliary sail, built in Pennsylvania and commissioned in 1875. The Huron ran aground off Nags Head, North Carolina in heavy weather, and was wrecked. At first, her crew worked in relatively little danger, attempting to free their ship, but she soon heeled over, carrying 98 officers and men to their deaths. Sable Island is an isolated small Atlantic sandbar situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia that is notable for its role in early Canadian history when France initiated the first attempts to settle on the island. The Viceroy of New France, Marquis de La Roche, sent soldiers and settlers (mainly criminals) to Sable Island to establish a fishery and fur trading post. When the convicts mutinied, they were left on the tree-less and stone-less Sable Island. Most of the settlers died, but a few managed to survive in mud dwellings for 5 years before being returned to France. Poorly planned, the settlement failed and was abandoned in 1603.
