A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." The Nativity of John the Baptist is a Christian high-ranking liturgical feast day observed annually on 24 June by the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism. It is one of only two feast days marking a saint's earthly birth (the other being the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 September); all other saint’s days mark their deaths or some other important event. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke which states that John was born six months before Jesus; thus, the feast of John the Baptist’s birth was fixed in the 4th century A.D. on 24 June, six months before Christmas. In the Roman calendar, 24 June was the date of the summer solstice, and Saint John's Eve is closely associated with Midsummer festivities in Europe. In 1611, the original printing of the King James Version (KJV) Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. "I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered by American civil rights activist and Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. MLK was a Baptist minister, deeply rooted in the African-American Christian tradition, who became a pivotal leader in the Civil Rights Movement, drawing his powerful oratory and philosophy of nonviolent resistance from his faith and biblical teachings. He co-pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with his father and was a Protestant Christian, a denomination that grew from the Reformation started by the original Martin Luther, whom King Jr. was named after. "I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered by American civil rights activist and Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. MLK was a Baptist minister, deeply rooted in the African-American Christian tradition, who became a pivotal leader in the Civil Rights Movement, drawing his powerful oratory and philosophy of nonviolent resistance from his faith and biblical teachings. He co-pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with his father and was a Protestant Christian, a denomination that grew from the Reformation started by the original Martin Luther, whom King Jr. was named after. January 19th is recognized in America as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Cursed by Saint Vitus? A strange medieval affliction caused a mass hysteria event in Europe where people inexplicably and uncontrollably danced for weeks, leading to several deaths from exhaustion. Likely caused by extreme stress, famine, and disease, victims believed they were cursed by St. Vitus (290-303), an early Christian martyr during the Diocletianic Persecution from Sicily and patron saint of dancers, actors, and epileptics, traditionally associated with healing neurological disorders — specifically Sydenham's chorea known as "St. Vitus’ Dance". Dancing sickness or disease was a documented, fatal phenomenon. This and other bizarre events lead up to the infamous Massachusetts Salem Witch Trails that took place in 1692. A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. National Indigenous Peoples Month in Canada pays tribute to Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-80). At age 19, after converting to Catholicism and taking a vow of perpetual virginity, Kateri left her Mohawk village of Ossernenon in present-day New York State and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada. There she died five years later, respected for her piety and good works. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter's Basilica in 2012. A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace.
