Check in to Hotel Vicarious, a podcast hosted by Jenny and Daria where they talk about all their favorite tv shows and movies.
We swear we're going to get around to Needle in a Timestack at SOME point. Honestly. It's gonna happen. But until then, we've decided to round up our favorite summer reads of 2022 thus far and dish on all our favorite moments. Guess how many of them work their way back to Chris Evans? Far too many for it to just be a coincidence but we promise we did not plan it! Still, not the worst theme to work its way through the episode. Our List: Book Lovers by Emily Henry Set On You by Amy Lea Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman Hook, Line, and Sinker by Tessa Bailey The Stand-In by Lily Chu Thank You, Next by Andie J. Christopher Wicked Beauty by Katee Roberts We also briefly discuss the chaos that is The Boys season 3 without trying to spoil Jenny too badly and what's left on our TBRs to get us through the summer. HAPPY PRIDE LISTENERS! Have you ever wondered what Pride & Prejudice would be like if it was set in an iconic gay village off of the South Shore of Long Island? Have you ever thought, "Hey what we need is a gorgeous three-part harmony arrangement of Sometimes by Britney Spears" or needed to know what Conrad Ricamora looked like doing the running man? FEAR NOT listeners! Because Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang and Andrew Ahn gave us everything we could have ever asked for with this gorgeous little film. Fire Island is heart wrenching, hilarious, and hopelessly romantic. Daria even got to see the cast in person at the premiere in New York City while celebrating the start of Pride Month with NewFest. It is now firmly one of our favorite adaptations in Austenland and we spend nearly two hours gushing about how much we love it. Just warning you now! Plus, we briefly discuss all things television with Ozark, Stranger Things, Ted Lasso, and The Boys before we pivot to Jenny's VERY exciting pop-up for Happily Ever After Books this weekend at Word on the Street! Can you believe some companies think we should return to the office?? After all this time?? While Jenny and Daria gear up for whatever this so-called "return to normal" is at their respective day jobs, we'll be replaying one of our favorite new rom coms for your listening pleasure. This is The Lost City! Please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! What makes a rom com? A good balance of comedy and romance, of course. Duh?? But what if you watch an incredible movie that calls itself a rom com but is light on one of the two?? What if by the end of the movie you're yelling at the TV like you're six years old and you're smashing two Barbie dolls together to kiss? Well, Jenny and Daria get into it on I Want You Back - a totally delightful comedy that's a little too light on the romance. We're also both stuck on a few new things this week - Jenny is all about Harry Style's new album Harry's House while Daria can't stop quoting Jinkx Monsoon's stunning Judy Garland during RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 7. We truly cannot believe we have reached the end of the final season of The Last Kingdom! What an amazing ride it has been to watch Uhtred, the gangly kid from Bebbanburg grow and eventually end up back where he truly belongs! The final push of these three episodes (8,9,10) are really all about getting back to Bebbanburg and there are some harrowing moments, some old friends whose faces we've missed, some fan service in the final hours. As we came to a close on the final episode, we really couldn't be happier with how it ended. Of course we'd always love to see more of the quiet moments between characters, but this gave us the satisfying end we've all wanted for Uhtred since back in Season 1, Episode 1. We also talk about Marvel's latest endeavor with the release of the She-Hulk trailer, as well as the BIG NEWS that Season 3 of Bridgerton has officially been announced as Colin and Penelope's season - we talk about what we're hoping happens and what might happen for future seasons. This podcast episode is heavy, folks. Epsiode 5, 6 and 7 of The Last Kingdom Season 5 are not kind to our favorite characters! Each episode has truly traumatic death and our babe Uhtred is dealing with A LOT. We've also got Aelswith and Eadith cavorting around the countryside like the world's oddest couple. And Aethelhelm is still the best worst baddie of all time on this show. We also talk about the horrendous ending to Killing Eve, Daria's love for Sam Raimi's new Dr. Strange movie, how Halo is actually a pretty good show, and THAT CLIP that's on the internet of Jesse Williams (we don't condone it and we think whoever filmed it should get in trouble) but also O_O. We contain multitudes.... No book of the week this week, Jenny is exhausted getting the bookstore ready to open tomorrow (Friday May 13th!) and Daria has been writing up a storm! But next week, hopefully, we will be back with a new book rec!!! Please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! We have finally arrived at the show that brought Daria and Jenny together! We are so excited to be recapping Season 5 of The Last Kingdom. We really love this show, and that's probably going to be quite evident to you once you actually listen to this episode. Sorry not sorry. The first four episodes start off with a gentle reminder of all the characters and by the time we get to the end of episode four we're distraught and we still have six episodes to go!! It was so great seeing all our faves - Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Osferth, Eadith. As well as some new faces that add some truly great moments to the first four episodes! We also get mean about celebrities and discuss in length how everyone who attended this year's Met Gala failed to understand the theme (though maybe not quite as badly as the Kardashians misunderstood it), that Jenny is starting a romance bookstore, and how excited we are for our upcoming schedule! We've continued on with our accidental Sandra Bullock marathon after seeing The Lost City on our girls trip last weekend. A silly, punchy action rom-com that plays off of Sandra's incredible chemistry with Channing Tatum and introduces us to yet another unhinged villain turn by Daniel Radcliffe. We really loved this movie- it was laugh out loud funny and had us swooning at all the right moments. An ode to films like Romancing the Stone and showcasing a deep respect for the romance genre, The Lost City was everything we wanted it to be. We also talk about a surprising bit of news about our favorite Uhtred, Alexander Dreymon, and announce that YES! the Last Kingdom Season 5 is definitely coming next week. This week on Hotel Vicarious, Jenny and Daria are bringing back an old favorite! Practical Magic is one of those timeless films and we love, love talking about it. Ahhh is it over already?? We would have enjoyed at least two more episodes along with Episode 7 and 8 but we got so many great scenes, along with some real rage inducing ones! Finally Kate and Anthony allow themselves to feel their feelings! But not before traumatizing us with the most beautiful goodbye dance of all time. There's also a lot of betrayals in these last two episodes in other side plots and while the season wraps up a beautiful story for Kate and Anthony it definitely left us wondering how any of these characters are going to be ready for Season 3??? This week's Book of the Week is Wicked and the Wallflower by Sarah MacLean, which you can find here or here! It was Daria's first foray into reading Regency Romance! Felicity and Devil are such an amazing pair, and it was exactly what we needed to read after binging so much Bridgerton! Tally ho, listeners! Does anyone else have a big case of the flutters? The heavy breathings? Is anyone else plagued by the torment that Kate and Anthony are giving us?! This week on Hotel Vicarious we are talking about the three middle episodes (4,5,6) - house parties, hunting parties, Kate and Anthony doing so much heavy breathing in each others faces, Portia Featherington continues her scheming, honestly the list of things that happened in these jam packed episodes is endless. These three episodes have given us truly some of our favorite and most memorable moments of this season, but also some of the saddest and most painful as well - and no one even died from a horrific bee sting in these ones! This week's Book of the Week is Gouda Friends by Cathy Yardley, which you can find here or here! It's a geeky, cheesy (in the brie and cheddar way), delicious friends to lovers romance that we just ate right up! You can find the tiktok by author Nisha Sharma that Jenny referenced in the article here. We've made it, dear readers! We've finally reached the premiere of Bridgerton season 2 and we are more than ready to re-enter society and catch up with our favorite families in Mayfair. This week on Hotel Vicarious we jump in to the first three episodes - society premieres, horseback rides at dawn, a lot of heavy breathing, and gorgeous, gorgeous gowns. We chat about our favorite new characters, our MVPs, and how much we love Kate Sharma (spoiler alert- we're obsessed). There's a ton to discuss, a lot of predictions to be made, and we spend an awful lot of time talking about Benedict Bridgerton and what a delight he is. Also, how excited are we to lose the sideburns? This week's Book of the Week is Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon, which you can find here or here! It's a quirky, heartfelt, shenanigans abound romance that Daria read in one sitting (but what else is new). Tally ho, listeners! As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! In this week's episode Daria and Jenny have finally arrived at the penultimate episode of A Countdown to Bridgerton! We talk all things Season 1 - our highs (Anthony's bum, Lady Danbury's hats, everything to do with Benedict), our lows (Anthony's sideburns, *that* scene which never should have been filmed, and pretty much anything to do with Simon - but we still love RJP!) and our hopes and dreams for the future - will Benedict join the Granvilles in a Regency throuple? Will Colin shave off that hideous goatee? And of course, the person we are most excited to see - our girl, Kate Sharma! We had no book of the week this week, but we highly recommend checking out Julia Quinn's entire Bridgerton back catalogue. It is very enjoyable! And it will be something to keep you occupied after you watch all the episodes in one day (don't lie, we know it's going to happen!) We also give a brief run through of how we'll be recapping our Season 2 episodes and we really excited about it! Tally ho, listeners! As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! In this week's episode Daria and Jenny are recapping Joe Wright's 2005 Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightly, Matthew Macfadyen, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench and so many more brilliant cast members - including Carrie Mulligan in her first ever movie role To recap this absolute legend in Regency media, we were joined by romance novelist Sara Whitney - who had some truly spectacular takes on Darcy, Donald Sutherland and why everyone should be watching the web series Lizzie Bennet's Diary. Getting to recap this movie was truly so fun as the final movie in our countdown to Bridgerton. For this episode's book of the week, Sara talked about her new release Tempting Fate, which is out now and we highly recommend you pick it up! A second chance romance with sass, snark and spice, we couldn't put this book down! We talk about how Jenny watched the entire season of The Last Kingdom in one day and Netflix never even checked to make sure she was still breathing (just barely because Uhtred is looking extra fiiiiiiine this season), we discuss what it would look like if Steve Kornacki was following our Darcy Bracket, and we invite Sara back to talk to us about Atonement after she watches it! In this week's episode Daria and Jenny are recapping 2019's The Personal History of David Copperfield starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and some many more brilliant cast members. While technically not a movie set in Regency England (oops the internet lied to us and we were too lazy to double check), this movie is a joyful romp and a beautiful cinematic experience from director Armando Iannucci. After last week's recommendation from Bre, we both read The Worst Guy by Kate Canterbary and it lived up to all our expectations!! This book had so many of our favorite tropes and truly three dimensional characters. We all talk about how excited we are for Wednesday's premiere of The Last Kingdom. In this week's episode Daria and Jenny are recapping the three part miniseries Death Comes to Pemberley with pod friend HEAapologist aka Bre! DCTP is a murder mystery, Regency style, that takes place in the lives of Fitzwilliam Darcy and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Bennet), six years after the events of Pride and Prejudice. This three part BBC miniseries is not just a murder mystery, but also gives us a look into the many different kinds of relationships and love that exist - like the new love blooming between Henry and Georgiana, love that has stood the test of time between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, love that finds its way in the sometimes fraught but always fun relationship between Wickham and Lydia. And most importantly, the love and friendship between Darcy and Lizzie, that once again endures through the trials and tribulations put on them by her family. We were so excited to have Bre on the podcast to listen to all of her thoughts on Darcy, Lizzie, Mrs. Bennet's heart palpitations and what an absolute asshole Wickham continues to be! We also talk about our book of the week, Casey McQuiston's One Last Stop, with honorable mentions to Kate Canterbary's Worst Guy and Sara Whitney's soon to be released second chance romance, Tempting Fate. Bre recommends checking out the comedy series, Murderville, starring Will Arnett, with some great guests including Conan O'Brien, Annie Murphy and Ken Jeong. This week on Hotel Vicarious, the Countdown to Bridgerton has begun! Daria and Jenny are back from break and we are talking about Jerusha Hess's 2013 romp, Austenland! Based on the novel by Shannon Hale. Austenland follows the story of single 30-something Jane Hayes, a self confirmed Jane Austen superfan and Mr. Darcy aficionado, who spends her life savings to spend a week in an immersive Austen experience in the English countryside. Austenland is a ridiculous fun romcom with a swoon worthy cast (Keri Russel! JJ Feilds! Ricky Whittle!), a charming love story and the scene stealer herself, the ever delightful Jennifer Coolidge. Join us as we recap the movie, talking through our favorite parts, the scenes that made us side-eye and everything in between. Jenny and Daria also talk about the new section of the podcast, Book of the Week - and the inaugural piece of work is Elena Armas's The Spanish Love Deception. A book both of us read in less than 24 hours because this delicious slow burn Enemies to Lovers/Fake Dating romcom had such amazing tension, and was so steamy…we couldn't put it down! We also talk about how we have a new VIP Discord group if you want to talk to us! And our Mr Darcy bracket starts shortly, so keep your eyes out for the first round coming soon on our socials! This week on Hotel Vicarious, Daria and Jenny Have finally arrived at the Witcher's finale episode. And while much of this show brought to fruition the set up from season 1, there has been just as much set up for season 3 and that's to come! We've got found families, sacrifices, surprises and even treason in this final episode. All in all, we were pleased with Witcher Season 2 and it will be interesting to see how everything plays out next season! Jenny and Daria also talk about Emily Henry's books, Beach Read and People You Meet on Vacation. As well as Guillermo Del Toro's Nightmare Alley, which leads into a tangent about books and movies we will read/watch over and over (Inception!) and those we would rather forget we ever read/saw to begin with (A Little Life). The big reveal is however the countdown to Bridgerton that starts February 24th after Jenny and Daria go on a one week hiatus. This week on Hotel Vicarious, Daria and Jenny unpack the Witcher's penultimate episode. The show hits us pretty early on with everyone slowly just descending into chaos and despair. Will Yennafer be the teacher Ciri has needed all along despite not being able to get back her power? We finally get the reunion we've been waiting for all damn season. Back in Cintra, Fringilla is desperately trying to keep control of her grasp on Nilfgaard. And finally, despite Geralt's best efforts there's a new monster on the loose… Jenny and Daria also talk about how January lasted five months, our impractical fashion choices in our 20s, Jenny talks about how she's loving The Book of Boba Fett and even more now with this week's surprise cameo. And Daria finished Yellowjackets and she needs everyone, especially Jenny, to watch it As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! This week on Hotel Vicarious, Daria and Jenny deal with a doozy of an episode - Witcher season 2 is drawing closer to its conclusion and we're getting hit with all the big moments: deaths, births, betrayals, quirky odd couples who deal in information. There's a lot to take in and not a lot of time left in the season! Will Yennefer really betray Geralt to get her powers back? Will Jaskier pop back up? And honestly, who is funding Rience's hunt because this guy is getting annoying. We also talk about Showtime's Yellowjackets and how downright creepy it is - and how much Daria loves it. Also, is anyone else having trouble accepting just how soon February is? Just us? Anyway... As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! As we head toward the finale, the episodes just seem to get more dense and we are here for it! We're introduced to a new villian named Rience (rhymes with science!) and his accomplice, Lydia. We also get to see Yennefer and Jaskier play out one of Daria's favorite tropes as they continue to be on the run in Oxenfurt. Vesemir and Triss confirm Ciri's blood can make the Witcher mutagen/serum/poison but Ciri has some high demands in order for them to use it. And our boy Geralt finds out that Yennefer did not die in the Battle of Sodden Hill which leads to a delicious conversation between both of Yen's exes. We also chat about the wild snowstorm that hit Jenny this past weekend, how Daria does not enjoy winter as dog owner, but there is a new season of Queer Eye and RuPauls' Drag Race and that is making Daria's icy walks way more tolerable! Jenny also reminds listeners to check out Katee Robert's newest release, Electric Idol. As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! If you liked the podcast recommend us to your friends! Well pals we are officially at the half way point in The Witcher Season 2! In this episode we get to see our girl Triss arrive at Kaer Morhen, having been summoned by Vesemir to help Ciri with her chaos and also to help her because he knows a bunch of unemotional trained monster killers aren't going to know what to do with a teenage girl. And we are here for it!!! We also get one reunion we've been waiting on for ages now: Yennafer and Jaskier finally meet again as he helps her and Cahir escape to Nilfgaard but not before we hear Jaskier's heartbroken ballad “Burn Butcher Burn” as he confirms what we all knew to be true - Jaskier had his heartbroken by Geralt on that mountain in Season 1. We also spend a lot of time talking about Daria almost being finished Succession and how much we love sad boy Kendall Roy, and how Jenny enjoyed Ghostbusters: Afterlife! Whoa, welcome to 2022 listeners! This week on Hotel Vicarious, Daria and Jenny discuss episode 3 of the second season of The Witcher. In this episode, Geralt and Ciri get down to business on her training and end up meeting one hell of a new monster while Yennefer remains consistent in making sure she always saves her own ass. Choas, abound. We also discuss Wheel of Time's season finale, Daria's progress on catching up on HBO's Succession, and our rocky entries into the new year. As always, please Subscribe/Rate/Review! In this episode we talk Witcher Season 2, Episode 2 end it really felt like a pretty dark episode as well as setting up for most of the season. We give our thoughts on Fringilla and Yennafer's encounter with the Elves as well as coming to the realization that Geralt (after meeting his Witcher Dad Vesimir and his other Witcher brothers) is the emo sullen one. But we're here for it. And we talk about Ciri coming out of her shell at Kaer Morhen, as well as how the book/game fan favorite Eskel just really didn't do much for us. We also talk about how we're spending our holidays, Daria's book recommendation for Ali Hazelwood's The Love Hypothesis and Jenny admits that she still loves the slightly problematic Leo after watching Adam McKay's Don't Look Up. It's finally here! In this episode we are ecstatic to talk about The Witcher Season 2's premiere episode “A Grain of Truth.” Without giving away spoilers we talk briefly about our overall thoughts for the season and then dive right into Episode 1 where we see our favourite characters pick right back up where they left off in the aftermath of the Battle of Sodden. We talk about new baby daddy Geralt, how much of a spitfire Ciri is (and we can't get enough) and of course our girl Yen! This season promises to be a really wild ride! We also talk about some comparisons of filming in Witcher to Game of Thrones, Daria gives her spoiler free thoughts on the new Spider-Man movie, how she's finishing up both Wheel of Time and Hawkeye. Jenny talks Christmas prep and how she just needs some days off
This week on Hotel Vicarious, we conclude our season one recap of The Witcher. With the season two premiere one day away, we're eager to see what's next for our favorite grumpy witcher and his newly adopted princess/witch/White Flame child. Plus, will Yennefer reappear after her completely bad ass performance on the battle field? Season two's premiere episode recap will premiere on 12/23- just in time for Christmas. We also chatted about all the tv we're currently watching: Succession, Yellowstone, Wheel of Time, and a few romance Christmas films on Netflix (A California Christmas & A Castle for Christmas). Can y'all believe this week marks the 20th episode of Hotel Vicarious? The passing of time is a wild, wild thing. And what better way to honor our little achievement then to get started on all things The Witcher! With the season two premiere a little more than a week away, we're refreshing our brains on the happenings of Geralt of Rivia, Princess Ciri, and our favorite sorceress Yennefer. Oh, and the Dandelion himself, Jaskier. This week we cover episodes 1-4 of season one with a recap that reminded us just how DENSE this show is- but we love it so much more for that. We also mention Daria's love of Wheel of Time, Jenny's excitement to check out One Night in Soho and how much both of them are VERY OVERWHELMED by the near end of 2021. Plus, Jenny gives a big shoutout to Esther and Holly of the Wildly Tarot Podcast and the release of their new book: The History of Tarot Art. In this week's episode Daria and Jenny are now fully into the holiday spirit with Nancy Meyers' classic Christmas romantic comedy, The Holiday. This movie has been a favorite of ours since it came out in 2006 and we had a blast recapping all of it - the good, the romantic, and the parts that haven't aged quite as well as it's cast members! We find out how Daria's first thanksgiving went, talk about Christmas decorating shenanigans, a long tangent on A Knight's Tale and the culture impact of the Blockbuster franchise. In this weeks episode Daria and Jenny get fully into the holiday spirit with Netflix's latest Christmas romantic comedy, LoveHard. We both truly loved this movie, and it felt like a modern take on those classic Christmas romcoms we grew up on. It had all the tropes we were dying to see, portrayed in a fresh new way with a cast we just couldn't stop gushing about. We also had a deep dive into all things food at Thanksgiving, how critics on RottenTomatoes hate joy, Jenny's impassioned tangent on the true meaning of the song Baby It's Cold Outside, some of our favorite Christmas movies and we have yet another Tessa Bailey book to recommend - it's a holiday one this time! In this week's episode, Daria and Jenny finish their deep dive into Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass with part two of their recap. This one is lengthy because so much happens in the last three episodes and we wanted to talk about ALL OF IT. We talk about characters with a deep sense of doing the right thing, Angel Vampire Daddies, and how Bev Keane is truly the villain of this series. We also talk about how the end of Daylight Savings is absolutely killing us, our thoughts on the upcoming holiday season, Daria mainlining Season 3 of YOU and Jenny's recommendation for a super cute and steamy fisherman romance if you want to keep that Crockett Island vibe going. The 90s aesthetic, the gorgeous Victorian house most women would give up anything to live in, the way romance rules, and how we think the critic score on Rotten Tomatoes is, frankly, bullshit. We also give a major shoutout to Alanna Bennett's incredible 20th anniversary post about the film. Click the link to read. This week on Hotel Vicarious, Daria and Jenny discuss Venom II: Let There Be Carnage! We talk about how this film differs from its predecessor and how despite being a bit short in plot, it was still an enjoyable film that doesn't take itself too seriously! It definitely stays true to its comic book roots! We also discuss what's next for Eddie and Venom and how they might show up in the Marvel Universe in the future! We also talk about how weird it is not to be talking about Ted Lasso, the absolutely refreshing delight that is Bowen Yang and how how much we want to hear from our listeners on their thoughts for next week's episode on everyone's favorite Practical Magic!
