Dish the Dirt

In this episode of Dish the Dirt, we speak with Olivia from Pemberley of Malmsbury about her third year participating in the Main Central floral installation at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. After winning a Gold Medal and People's Choice Award in 2023, and a Bronze Award last year, Olivia returns with even more passion—this time celebrating community, collaboration, and local blooms. We dive into how Olivia and her fellow micro flower farmers from the Macedon Ranges joined forces to create large-scale installations that not only wowed judges and audiences, but also highlighted the power of working together. These growers donate their flowers to community events like the Kyneton Agricultural Show, creating beauty and impact beyond the industry.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Nelson DeMille (1943-2024) Nelson DeMille, who died on September 17, 2024 at the age of 81, was one of the leading best-selling authors from the 1980s into the 21st Century. Among his novels are The General's Daughter, the Gold Coast, Plum Island and Word of Honor. Three of his novels were turned into films. On June 13, 1997, Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky interviewed Nelson DeMille while he was on tour for Plum Island. In the discussion, we focused on that book, as well as several others.  This is the first of two interviews with Nelson DeMille. Nelson DeMille would return to the character of Paul Brenner from The General's Daughter in Up Country in 2002, he would return to John Corey from Plum Island in The Lions Game in 2000, and in seven other novels. In all, there would be 27 novels, plus two written in collaboration with his son, Alex DeMille, two early novels written under a pseudonym plus several works of short fiction. Three of his books, most notably The General's Daughter, became films. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited by Richard Wolinsky in November 2024. Echo and other faults exist on the original recording. Complete Interview   Barry Lopez (1945-2020) Barry Lopez (1945-2020) in conversation with Richard Wolinsky on June 11, 2004 while he was on tour for Resistance, a collection of interrelated short stories with the theme of resistance. Barry Lopez, who died on December 25, 2020 at the age of 75, was a master of the short form, both fiction and non-fiction. His non-fiction, collected in such books as Arctic Dreams and his last published work, Horizon, and his fiction in collections such as Light Action in the Caribbean, focused on exploration, biology, morality, transcendence, biology, politics, philosophy and much more. In this second of three interview, he discusses how he came to write this particular book, and then moves on to discussing what in 2004 was an unnamed threat of totalitarianism. Today, of course, it's named. He speaks of the inattentiveness of the masses as well, which also has great resonance today. Barry Lopez Wikipedia page. Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a trio of cozy mysteries by Claudia Gray, all starring Jane Austen characters: The Murder of Mr. Wickham (2022), The Late Mrs. Willoughby (2023), and The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bough (2024). These are an absolutely delightful (and non-stressful) way to revisit these characters, and there's even a little helping of romance. Mentioned: Death Comes to Pemberley, another contemporary author's take on an Austen-themed mystery.Terri's random recommendation is Artful Plus, the premium version of Artful Agenda, a digital planner we both use. With Artful Plus, you get a habit tracker and the ability to make and use your own stickers, among other perks. Mentioned: The Artful Agenda Facebook group, Artfully Obsessed. In the archives, we discussed an episode from 2020 on how parents can pay it forward (which we think is more helpful than starting or participating in a drive-thru pay-it-forward chain). Mentioned: Books from our former co-hosts: Inclusion in Action by Nicole Eredics and Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools (January 2025) by Amanda Morin.Next week's lineup: Lost S1 E23, "Exodus: Part 2," on Tuesday, December 17Shrinking S2 E6, "Get in the Sea," on Wednesday, December 18Weekly roundup on Thursday, December 19Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Steven Bach Steven Bach (1938-2009) author of the biography “Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl”, interviewed in 2007 by Richard Wolinsky. This podcast was first posted May 5, 2017. Leni Riefenstahl was the film maker behind the Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Reifenstahl, who died in 2003 at the age of a hundred and one, to the end of her life denied her work was political, that she was an artist. Stephen Bach, who died at the age of 70 in 2009, had been a studio executive and began writing  books with “Final Cut”, his memoir about the making of the film Heaven's Gate. He followed that with a biography of the playwright Moss Hart, and then a biography of actress Marlene Dietrich, which as he says, led him to Leni Riefenstahl. The interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on May 7, 2007. Guardian Obituary. In an interview perhaps more timely today than the year it was recorded, Bach compares Reifenstahl's work to right-wing propaganda in America, and the use of the Hitler playbook. Complete Interview.   Charles Yu Charles Yu, whose novel Interior Chinatown just won the 2020 National Book Award for fiction, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky. Interior Chinatown takes place in a meta-world in which Hollywood's Chinese stereotypes are portrayed by Asian immigrants and second-generation Asian Americans in films and TV shows. The book uses tropes from screenplays as well as prose fiction to illuminate these tropes, switching between narrative, entertainment history, and polemic in a highly original way. Charles Yu is the author of two previous short-story collections and one novel, has worked as an attorney, and also has worked in the writers' room of several television shows, most notably during the first season of HBO's Westworld. Interior Chinatown is now a television miniseries streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Anne Hillerman has written nine books in a series of mysteries featuring the native detectives Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, created by her father, the legendary novelist, the late Tony Hillerman (1925-2008). Previously a writer of travel books focusing on Santa Fe and environs, she began working on these novels following the death of her father and chose to increase the role of a minor character, Bernadette Manuelito, from Tony Hillerman's books to one of primary protagonist. That change was later emulated in the “Dark Winds” television series. Complete Interview   Caleb Carr (1955-2024) Caleb Carr in 2002. Caleb Carr (1955-2024), author of The Alienist and other works, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studios October 15, 1997. Digitized, remastered and edited in September 2024, this interview has not been heard in over a quarter century. Caleb Carr, who died on May 23, 2024 at the age of 68, was a military historian, a novelist, and a writer who examined the nature of violence in his fiction and non-fiction. He was perhaps best known for his best-selling novel The Alienist, which recently became a two-season streaming series. Over all, he wrote 11 books, several articles and reviews, worked on both seasons of the television series and two exorcist films. He was the son of Lucien Carr, a key member of the group that included Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Lucien Carr went to prison for manslaughter for killing the sexual predator who had abused him as a youth. Kerouac helped him dispose of the knife. This interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on October 15, 1997 while Caleb Carr was on tour for The Angel of Darkness, the sequel to The Alienist. While he never came back directly to the character of Lasso Kreisler, the protagonist of The Alienist, Caleb Carr's final novel, a contemporary mystery, Surrender, New York, featured as its protagonist an expert on the life and work of Kreisler. His next book following The Angel of Darkness was Killing Time, a dystopian science fiction novel. Pride and Prejudice Chapter 46 - Romantic Sleep Story with Stephanie Poppins #prideandprejudice #stephaniepoppins #romance #sleepstory #asmrsleep Sleep stories with Steph These Bedtime Tales guarantee a smooth transition onto a great night's sleep Published by Neworld Books UK Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen was first published in 1813 and is a classic romantic novel set in early 19th-century England. The story revolves around the spirited Elizabeth Bennet and the proud Mr. Darcy, exploring the complexities of love, class, and social expectations. Against the backdrop of the English countryside and the drawing rooms of the landed gentry, Austen skillfully crafts a narrative that satirizes the societal norms of the time while portraying the individual growth and romantic entanglements of its characters. The novel is deeply embedded in the historical context of the Regency era, offering a keen insight into social hierarchy, marriage expectations, and gender roles of the time. Through Elizabeth's sharp wit and Darcy's initial aloofness, Austen presents a nuanced exploration of personal prejudices and the importance of self-awareness in matters of the heart. In this episode, Mr Gardiner joins Bingley and Darcy to fish, and Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner visit the women at Pemberley. Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Hurst do not seem pleased to see Elizabeth. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stephaniepoppins/message

Elizabeth tells Jane of her conversation with Darcy. At first Jane is surprised - she didn't think Lizzie liked Mr. Darcy at all - but then overjoyed that her sister will be married to him. Darcy asks Mr. Bennett for Elizabeth's hand. Mr. Bennett is also surprised at this news - as he too thinks Lizzie does not like the man, but Elizabeth assures him she does and that this is what she wants. Elizabeth also tells her father it was Darcy who paid Wickham. Her father is delighted that he does not have to pay back his brother-in-law. Elizabeth tells Mrs. Bennett who is shocked and then beyond happy to know not only are three of her daughters being wed but that Lizzie will be wealthier than even Jane! Elizabeth asks Darcy when and how he came to love her. He cannot be sure when but he fell in love with her because of her spirit and mind. The news of the engagement is shared: Elizabeth writes to the Gardiners, Darcy to Lady Catherine, and Mr. Bennett to Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet writes that though he knows Lady Catherine may be angered by Darcy denying marriage to her daughter, Collins should seek side with Darcy as he is more well off. Collins does and visits the family with congratulations.  Jane and Bingley move into an estate near Pemberley. The Bennet family visits often - especially Kitty who spends more time with her sisters and becomes a fine young woman. Mary stays at home with her parents. Lydia often overstays her welcome at the Bingleys, constantly asks Jane and Elizabeth for money (Elizabeth does oblige with her own savings), and moves around constantly. Georgiana and Elizabeth become close. Caroline Bingley has welcomed Jane to the family and, though disappointed in Darcy's marriage, is cordial to Elizabeth. Lady Catherine and Darcy eventually make amends and she visits Pemberley. The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Listen away. Elizabeth and the Gardiners are surprised to see Darcy arrive the next morning accompanied by his sister, Georgiana and Bingley. Georgiana is shy but pretty. Bingley is delighted to see Elizabeth and asks after her family - though careful not to mention Jane directly. Elizabeth wonders if he is still in love with Jane. Darcy invites Elizabeth and the Gardiners to stay for dinner at Pemberley. At dinner, Elizabeth is impressed by Darcy's kindness and generosity. He is attentive to his sister, and he makes a point of including Elizabeth and the Gardiners in the conversation. The next day, Elizabeth and the Gardiners return to Pemberley - Mr. Gardiner to fish with Bingley and Darcy and the women for tea with Georgiana and the Bingley sisters.  Caroline Bingley tries to make Elizabeth feel uncomfortable by bringing up the departure of the militia and how it must disappoint her family. Elizabeth steers the conversation away from Wickham, in hopes not to upset Georgiana with the mention of his name. After everyone leaves, Caroline criticizes Elizabeth to Darcy - making comments about Elizabeth's looks. Darcy notes Elizabeth is still “one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance.” The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Listen away. Elizabeth is initially surprised by the beauty of Pemberley and the kindness of the housekeeper who speaks highly of Darcy. She then comes upon a portrait of Darcy, and is struck by how handsome she finds him. As she walks around the estate, Elizabeth imagines what it would be like to live at Pemberley. Suddenly, Darcy appears. (He wasn't to arrive until tomorrow.) Elizabeth is embarrassed to be caught, but Darcy is extremely polite and gracious. She is impressed and begins to see Darcy in a new light. At the end of the chapter, Darcy asks Elizabeth if he can introduce his sister to her.  After leaving, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner discuss Darcy's surprising geniality - not at all how Elizabeth had led them to believe. Elizabeth tells Jane of Darcy's proposal and letter - leaving out the bits on Bingley and focusing on Wickham's true character. She asks Jane if she should expose Wickham to their mutuals, but ultimately they decide against it, as Darcy didn't expose the matter to anyone himself.  Colonel Foster's wife extends an invitation to Lydia to spend the summer with them in Brighton. Elizabeth asks Mr. Bennett to not allow Lydia to go, worried Lydia's flirtatious nature will embarrass the family. But Mr. Bennett believes there is nothing to be done about her nature - it's either her at home or in Brighton, and in Brighton perhaps she will mature. Thus, Lydia departs for Brighton, leaving behind a jealous Kitty.  Elizabeth sees Wickham before he leaves. She makes mention of having seen Darcy and met Colonel Fitzwilliam. Wickham comes to understand, through Elizabeth's discreet hints, that she knows the truth of his past. They depart. Elizabeth reflects on her parent's marriage: she's disappointed that her father has married a ridiculous woman, yet also disappointed in her father as he has not been a respectable spouse. In July, the Gardiners take Elizabeth on a tour of the country, as promised. Mrs. Gardiner suggests they visit Pemberley. Elizabeth agrees when they discover Darcy will not be home.
