You simply can't have too much Jennifer Coolidge, and Austenland (2013, available on Amazon & Apple) just let the woman who couldn't memorize lines go the F off in this pretend-Regency Era movie, where Keri Russell goes to a Jane Austen immersive resort/amusement park, falls in fake and real love, and we do a modern "Pride & Prejudice" retelling. We also get one of the "Flight of the Conchords" guys, Jane Seymour, the director of "Napoleon Dynamite," and a fake horse that is probably a donkey. This one goes up on Patreon first, and because it's so thematically appropriate, on Bridgerton Bros a week later. Join us over at patreon.com/kevinandjon for ALL our fun. Thanks to Soulmate & Patreon Pal extraordinaire Courtney McPhail for the request, and to all you dukes & debutantes for the support!

#1 New York Times bestselling author, Jodi Picoult, spoke with me about writing for Wonder Woman, adapting books for musical theater, and the question of Shakespeare's true authorship in her upcoming novel BY ANY OTHER NAME. Jodi Picoult is the bestselling author of 30 novels, including landmark titles such as Mad Honey – her most recent 1 million-copy bestseller – Wish You Were Here, A Spark of Light, and Small Great Things. 40 million copies of her books are in print worldwide and have been translated into 34 languages. Her forthcoming novel is BY ANY OTHER NAME (on sale 8/20; Ballantine), described as novel about two women, centuries apart – one of whom is the real author of Shakespeare's plays – who are both forced to hide behind another name. #1 New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah said of the book, “You'll fall in love with Emilia Bassano, the unforgettable heroine based on a real woman that Picoult brings vividly to life in her brilliantly researched new novel.” Elle called it, “[An] inspiring work of feminist literature inspired by real historical accounts.” Jodi was also co-librettist for the stage musical adaptation of her young adult novel Between the Lines (which premiered Off-Broadway in Summer 2022), the co-librettist of the musical BREATHE, the co-librettist of the musical adaptation of The Book Thief, and she is currently at work on an adaptation of Austenland. In our second episode, we take a hard look at the quintessential romance hero: Fitzwilliam Darcy and how his character has crafted so many that came after him in what Ines (not Leslye!) likes to call the Darcy Arc. Ines postulates that the Darcy Arc can be found in the evolution of characters like Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey. These characters begin as misunderstood and emotionally distant figures who eventually reveal a deeper capacity for love and kindness. This transformation, triggered by their relationships with strong-willed heroines, sees them shift from aloofness to passionate commitment. The discussion highlights common elements across these stories, such as the challenges of wealth and status, the heroes' moral complexities, and their ultimate transformation through love, which captivates readers and makes these stories enduringly appealing. Read Pride and Prejudice Want to watch it? Do what Leslye and Ines do and chain smoke both the 2005 movie here. You can read or watch Edward Cullen's arc in Twilight. She knew she wanted to be an author from the day she first read A Wrinkle in Time when she was a child, and she grew up inspired by authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman, Garth Nix, and Dennis Lehane (the ultimate master of plot twists). It has always been her dream to become a published author, and it is her hope to expand into multiple genres of fiction. http://linktr.ee/authormaphipps Rebecca is an American author who resides in the bucolic hills of West Virginia in the heart of Appalachia with her rugged husband, two hilarious daughters, and a small congress of animals. As you can see, she's fond of pretty words and has been since preschool. This is also probably why she wanted to be an author after reading Catherine Called Birdy when she was ten. This was the book that taught her how to say cuss words in a creative manner. Rebecca has two published short stories in the science-fiction and urban fantasy genres and plans to write full-length projects in the near future. She one day hopes to be able to add "multi-genre author" to her list of career titles. https://lnk.bio/rebeccarede

Book Vs. Movie: AustenlandThe 2007 Hale Book Vs the 2013 Keri Russell Movie The Margos are feeling romantic in this episode that is about all things Jane Austen and Mr. Darcy. The 2007 novel Austenland by Shannon Hale tells the story of an early 30-something woman named Jane Hayes who dreams of living life as if it were Pride & Prejudice everyday. When a wealthy Aunt leaves her a trip to “Austenland” in England--she believes she will find her own Colin Firth there. Austenland is a place in England where Jane Austen fans can live the life of the Regency era filled with period-appropriate clothes, lavish meals, and chances to partner in an old-fashioned way. Jane takes on the name “Miss Jane Erstwhile” and meets two potential suitors: Martin and Mr. Nobley. Whom will she choose as her “Mr. Darcy?” The movie is written and directed by Jerusha Hess and has Keri Russell as our lead, Jane. It also has Jennifer Coolidge and Bret McKenzie which maybe saves the whole thing. Or does it? So, between the original story and the 2013 film-which did we prefer? Shannon Hale is the author of over thirty children's and young adult novels, including graphic novel memoirs Real Friends and Best Friends, and multiple award winners The Goose Girl, Book of a Thousand Days, and Newbery Honor recipient Princess Academy. This week on Hotel Vicarious, the Countdown to Bridgerton has begun! Daria and Jenny are back from break and we are talking about Jerusha Hess's 2013 romp, Austenland! Based on the novel by Shannon Hale. Austenland follows the story of single 30-something Jane Hayes, a self confirmed Jane Austen superfan and Mr. Darcy aficionado, who spends her life savings to spend a week in an immersive Austen experience in the English countryside. Austenland is a ridiculous fun romcom with a swoon worthy cast (Keri Russel! JJ Feilds! Ricky Whittle!), a charming love story and the scene stealer herself, the ever delightful Jennifer Coolidge. Join us as we recap the movie, talking through our favorite parts, the scenes that made us side-eye and everything in between. Jenny and Daria also talk about the new section of the podcast, Book of the Week - and the inaugural piece of work is Elena Armas's The Spanish Love Deception. A book both of us read in less than 24 hours because this delicious slow burn Enemies to Lovers/Fake Dating romcom had such amazing tension, and was so steamy…we couldn't put it down! We also talk about how we have a new VIP Discord group if you want to talk to us! And our Mr Darcy bracket starts shortly, so keep your eyes out for the first round coming soon on our socials!
