“You're hot and you're cold, you're yes then you're no, you're in then you're out, you're up then you're down.”  So goes Katy Perry's hit single Hot n Cold back in 2008, talking about a romantic relationship which is unstable due to one of the partner's mood swings. Maybe you yourself have been with someone like that in the past. They would shower you with attention one day, only to ghost you the next. There's actually a term in the dating world for that kind of person: a prowler! Another perfect example from fiction is the character of Jasper in Nancy Meyers' Christmas film The Holiday, played by Rufus Sewell. Check it out if you haven't seen it! Don't predators “prowl” in the wild? What negative effects can prowling have? How can I protect myself from a prowler? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Take your valentine somewhere that's green Writer and art lover Susan Montag recommends the work of Theatre 55, a Twin Cities-based theater company whose shows all feature casts of actors over age 55. Their production of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” is playing at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul through Feb. 22. She's particularly looking forward to hearing vocalist Patricia Lacy, who is known for her work with Luther Vandross and with Sounds of Blackness, sing out “Feed me, Seymour,” when she plays the hungry plant from outer space, Audrey II.  Susan says: I've seen a lot of the Theatre 55 shows. They are always so much fun. I like to see on the stage the folks who represent someone in my age group, showing that people over 55 are still very vibrant, very energetic and have a lot of talent to share!— Susan MontagTake your Valentine to see a rom-com play in Duluth MacKenzie McCullum is a writer and podcaster living in the Twin Cities, and she suggests taking your Valentine to see a Minnesota-original rom-com play at Zeitgeist Theater in Duluth. “String” opens tonight and runs through Feb. 22. There is an ASL-interpreted performance Wednesday, Feb. 19. The play was a runner-up for the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Comedy Playwriting Award. MacKenzie says: I like to say that this play is like your favorite Nancy Meyers or Nora Ephron romantic comedy that you see on screen, but it's on stage. It's just a beautiful showcasing of genuine love that you can find every day. It's an unlikely courtship between a poet and a pizza delivery boy. It's a great ensemble play: there are lots of great characters that will make you laugh out loud.  The playwright, Jessica Lind Peterson, is a Duluth native. She actually wrote this play while she was in school at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She went on to co-found Yellow Tree Theater based in Osseo. “String” had kind of a life of its own in productions all over the country, and now it is back in Duluth for the 20th anniversary.— MacKenzie McCullumMatch made in heaven: Mathematics + art Freelance mathematics writer Barry Cipra of Northfield recommends a solo art show that celebrates the connections between mathematics and art. John Shier's exhibit “From Order to Chaos” features visual art created from equations. The show at the Steeple Center in Rosemount runs through March, with an artist reception and talk on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Barry points out art and mathematics are both fundamentally creative endeavors, adding that John is part of a long tradition of artists using mathematical thinking to create their work. Leonardo da Vinci, anyone? Barry offers this introduction: John Shier's a retired physicist. He taught for many years at Normandale Community College here in the Twin Cities, and has been doing his own kind of art, using equations and algorithms to create interesting, colorful [works], everything from landscapes to completely abstract works. He also uses a lot of randomness. He calls it stochastic geometry — a term of art in the mathematical world. You let chance play a big role in what you get. He then, of course, uses his own eye to make selections. If he doesn't like what the computer produces, he'll try it again and see if he gets something that looks better.— Barry Cipra

On episode 80 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by film critic Ema Sasic to discuss the final film in their Nancy Meyers series, The Intern (2015). It's hard to imagine that the Nancy Meyers' series is already coming to an end, as the director feels like she has so many stories to tell, but alas here the boys are with the (for now) final film in the director's filmography. Six years after her last film, Meyers returned with a workplace dramedy about a retired widower that signs up to becoming a ‘senior intern' for an up and coming, online clothing company. Over the course of the film, we see generations collide and a true friendship arise, making for one of the most delightful, heartwarming entries in the series so far, and one of Meyers' best films to date. Ryan, Jay, and Ema break down their thoughts on the film, if Meyers is a fan of Workaholics, how genuine these characters are, riding a bike in the office, Robert De Niro's incredible performance, why people need to stop hating on the great Anne Hathaway, and why the world needs more Nancy Meyers movies. They boys also give their personal ranking of Meyers' filmography and announce the next director movie series they will be covering. On episode 79 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Kevin Jacobsen, Entertainment Weekly Content Update Editor and host of the And the Runner Up Is podcast, to discuss the latest film in their Nancy Meyers series, It's Complicated (2009). Divorce can be really tough, but getting back with your ex while he is married to the woman he left you for…sounds complicated. This is the premise to the latest film from Nancy Meyers, about a successful bakery owner who starts an affair with her ex-husband while also becoming romantically involved with her architect that is building her the kitchen she's always wanted. If you are thinking this is the ultimate Nancy Meyers fever dream of a film, well you would be one hundred percent correct, and it's a lot of fun. Ryan, Jay, Kevin break down their thoughts on the film, just how complicated this movie is, how this narrative could connect to Meyer's own life, smoking in the guest bathroom, Streep's killer comedic performance, how Baldwin and Martin work alongside her in the film, the elegant kitchen at the center of this film and how it doesn't need to be replaced. Billed as a house swap story of two heartbroken women wanting to leave their world's behind after terrible encounters with the men in their lives, Meyers sets a more dramatic, sweet tale of finding love and confidence during the holiday season. In what feels like her version of Love Actually, Meyers is able to deliver a much more compelling, romantic film than that British film from just a few years before, lead by an all-star cast of Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black. Ryan, Jay, and Karen break down their thoughts on the film, what their holiday traditions are with their families, who character gets a better deal within the house swap, Jude Law's summer tan, singing in a Blockbuster video, the charming Eli Wallach, and, of course, the most important person in cinema history, Mr. Napkin Head. On episode 77 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the latest film in their Nancy Meyers series, Something's Gotta Give (2003). With her third feature film, Nancy Meyers reunited with Diane Keaton and recruited Jack Nicholson to star in a romantic comedy about famous, neurotic playwright and elder playboy, philanthropist falling in love with each other, despite being complete opposites. Considered to be the best film in her filmography, Meyers' signature attention to detail and charm is matched by two incredible performances by Keaton and Nicholson, all wrapped within a hilarious, steamy screenplay that makes this film extremely rewatchable and quotable. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia extensively dive into why they love this movie, wearing turtleneck sweaters in the summers, the birth of the Nancy Meyers' kitchen obsession, the food in the film, how time works in this story, Nicholson's star power, how Keaton's character reflects Meyers' personality, the performances of Keanu Reeves and Frances McDormand, if Keaton picks the right man at the end of the film, and a new movie franchise “pitch” for the ages. Writer/director/producer Nancy Meyers joins us to discuss her cozy holiday classic, The Holiday. Masterfully shifting between sunny LA and the charming countryside of England, she discusses how the dual storylines made the crew feel like they were creating two different movies. With a focus on crafting female characters with "gumption," Nancy ensured that stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet not only represented modern womanhood, but also found perfect love interests in Jude Law and Jack Black, who shine as worthy partners. This lighthearted romantic comedy transformed into a holiday phenomenon, warming hearts across the world and becoming a must-watch holiday tradition nearly two decades later. Hosted on Acast. “This is gooning for people who like nice stuff.” - Chris  On this week's holiday episode, we're chatting about the Christmas snooze, The Holiday! Is this considered a Christmas classic? Why couldn't we just have one of these storylines instead of both of them vying for movie supremacy? How little romantic chemistry do Kate Winslet and Jack Black have with one another? Besides The Talented Mr. Ripley, has Jude Law been any more handsome than this movie? Why did Nancy Meyers put so little detail and conflict in this screenplay? How humiliating is it when they make Kate Winslet do all that Jack Black-style scatting? PLUS: The guys wish to party with the great Hans Zimmer after one of his big-ass rock concerts!  The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Bill Macy, Shelley Berman, Kathryn Hahn, John Krasinski, and Eli Wallach as Arthur; directed by Nancy Meyers. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 76 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to discuss the first film in their Nancy Meyers series, What Women Want (2000). Following up her success of The Parent Trap, Nancy Meyers' second feature film follows an chauvinistic advertising executive who gains the ability to hear the inner thoughts of women, truly finding out what women want. A simple, amusing premise formed into the biggest box office hit of the director's career, with stars Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt lighting up the screen together. But over two decades later, the film, while successful, has become the most divisive film of her filmography, given her lack of involvement in the film's script, leading to some of the strangest storytelling decisions you'd see in a romantic comedy. What Women Want feels like a movie stuck between eras of time where most of the jokes don't work, characters and plot devices haven't aged well, and yet the premise is still interesting enough to keep things moving; it's a fascinating film to talk about. Ryan, Jay, and Dan break down their thoughts on the film, what still works within the film and what doesn't, the message Meyer's might be saying about her own personal life, the careers of Gibson, Hunt, and Marisa Tomei, if Nick Marshall is a redeemable character, and if hearing the thoughts of a female dog makes sense. On episode 75 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Pop Culture Confidential host Christina Jeurling Birro to discuss the first film in their Nancy Meyers series, The Parent Trap (1998). After nearly two decades of writing acclaimed screenplays that earned top dollar at the box office as well as an Oscar nomination, Nancy Meyers set out in the late 1990s to make her directorial debut with a remake of the 1961 Disney family film, The Parent Trap. Centering around two identical twins who discover each other while they are at summer camp who switch places on their return home in order to get their parents back together, Meyers used this property to not only establish her special cinematic we've all come to love, but as a vessel to handle her divorce from her co-collaborator for many years, director Charles Shyer. In doing this, she made a film that is far superior than the original, while also finding a star in the making with newcomer Lindsay Lohan. Ryan, Jay, and Christina break down their thoughts on the film, the plot of the film, Lohan's incredible performance, if Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson play the worst parents in the history of film, best camp movies, and the Disney live action film era of the late 1990s to early 2000s. In filmmaking, finding the right actor can make all the difference, and for Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Michael Keaton was the only choice for the lead role in Goodrich. This episode delves into the creative journey of writing and directing a deeply personal film, navigating the challenges of independent production, and discovering the heart of the story during editing. It also explores how persistence, vision, and collaboration are essential in bringing a project to life. Hallie Meyers-Shyer is a writer and director known for her heartfelt and character-driven stories. Following in the footsteps of her legendary filmmaking parents, Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer, Hallie made her directorial debut with Home Again in 2017. Her latest film, Goodrich, is a personal story inspired by her family dynamics, with a lead role written specifically for Michael Keaton. Hallie is passionate about crafting films that blend humor and emotion, creating stories that resonate on a deeply human level.   In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and Jason Hellerman speak with Hallie Meyers-Shyer to discuss: Insights from the LA Director's Lab, a workshop that offers directors a space to practice their craft and experiment with creative risks Why Michael Keaton was the perfect fit for Goodrich and how she wrote the role with him in mind The personal inspiration behind the story, rooted in Hallie's experiences with her own family How to keep pushing forward with a film project, even when financing falls through The importance of outlining in the writing process and how it provides freedom in creativity Hallie's experience working with a tight-knit team and storyboarding the entire film The emotional discoveries that shaped the film during editing and how the film revealed itself as more than just a comedy   Memorable Quotes: “I work hard to fully flesh out each character and make them not just servicing the thing that you want to get across in that scene and make them people with a lot of layers and things.” (15:06) “I kind of always felt this was going to be an independent movie, even though it sort of would have been a studio movie probably 30 years ago.” (18:24) “I had Pinterest boards for costumes. I had Pinterest boards for every location. I also had a really long time to work on this movie, so I had about six years of images pulled.” (26:27) “I love editing. I just love it. It's one of my favorite parts, if not my favorite part.” (36:02) “Something I noticed about Michael Keaton in the editing room (…) is he brings the first scene of the movie into the last scene of the movie.” (37:15) “I know many super talented writers who can do multiple projects at once. I admire it. I cannot do it. I am so fully immersed in what I'm writing.” (46:27) “I think it's so important for human stories, personal stories about people and emotions and whatever your life story is, get it out there, keep at it, be your biggest champion, make it happen.” (51:52)     Resources: Follow Hallie Meyers-Shyer on Instagram   Hallie on IMDb   Goodrich on IMDb   Hollywood Camera Works trainings     Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool   Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool   YouTube  https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool   Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com Learn more about your ad choices.
