Today, Caroline and Tayrn are thrilled to welcome Katie Tamony to the podcast! Katie spent a decade (2001 to 2011) as the Editor-in-Chief of Sunset Magazine, celebrating the seamless indoor-outdoor living of the West Coast. Today, she heads up marketing and trend forecasting for Monrovia, one of the country's premier plant nurseries. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, Monrovia grows over 4,000 varieties of plants—from trees and shrubs to perennials and exquisite edibles—across thousands of acres in the US. Katie joins us to discuss the fascinating world of plant breeding, the top landscape trends shaping our backyards, and why you shouldn't be afraid to aggressively prune your plants! Quick Gardening Trends & Takeaways: Patio Culture: More people are focusing their gardening efforts on patios and balconies. Instead of just the traditional "thriller, filler, spiller" container combinations, homeowners are embracing wellness and luxury by potting single, stunning statement plants with lush, broad leaves. The "Easy Sunday" Garden: Think of a Nancy Meyers movie landscape. This highly tailored look relies on the luxurious, year-round structure of traditional boxwoods paired with classic flowering shrubs like hydrangeas, roses, and camellias. This trend limits color palettes (like all white or white-and-blue) and utilizes mass plantings of a few varieties rather than a chaotic mix. The Modern Meadow: A blend of wild and refined, this trend is incredibly popular with younger homeowners. It focuses on biodiversity by mixing native grasses with pollinator-friendly perennials like salvia, lavender, and agastache to invite bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds into the yard. Exquisite Edibles: Gardeners are looking beyond basic tomatoes and berries. Thanks to clever plant breeding, people are now growing exotic fruits like kiwis and figs in colder hardiness zones, or even planting compact apple trees in patio containers. Look closely at the branching: When shopping for shrubs, check if the plant is evenly branched on all sides. Good branching indicates the plant was pruned frequently and properly cared for at the nursery, meaning it will hold its shape much better in your yard. Buy plants with tight buds: We are often dazzled by fully blooming plants at the garden center, but you will get a much longer bloom time at home if you purchase a plant that is still tightly budded (like peonies, which should be bought when the "eye" is just coming up). Don't be afraid to prune: Many gardeners are too timid, but aggressive pruning is incredibly healthy for your plants. Cutting back perennials, hydrangeas, and trees at the right time helps them return fuller and with more blooms. Dig a wider hole, not a deeper one: When planting, dig a hole that is at least twice as wide as the plant's root ball. Ensure you aren't burying the plant too deep; the soil should just cover the root ball. Mix your native dirt with soil amendments, add a slow-release fertilizer into the hole, and always finish with a top layer of mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture. It boasts a never-before-seen ruby color that ages to deep charcoal, with sturdy stems and thick leaves that hold blooms for 130 days. Nitty Gritty White Rose: A compact rose popularized by designer James Farmer, who planted masses of them in containers around his pool for a stunning, bouquet-like effect. Fatsia 'Camouflage': A beautiful statement plant with variegated foliage discovered by plant hunter Dan Hinkley. Cutting Garden Shrubs: Step outside the box for your floral arrangements by clipping from shrubs like Leucadendron, compact Crape Myrtles, or Loropetalum. In this episode of our Unpacking Iconic Homes series, we dive into the interiors of the most famous Nancy Meyers movies - from The Holiday and Something's Gotta Give to It's Complicated and Father of the Bride - and unpack why these homes have become so deeply iconic. Nancy Meyers interiors aren't just beautiful - they feel warm, layered, lived-in and deeply aspirational in a way that still feels attainable. What we cover: Why Nancy Meyers homes feel so comforting and timeless The signature palette: warm neutrals, off-whites, contrast, and the occasional pale blues, sage greens and earthy browns relative to the location The art of layering (these homes are a masterclass) Kitchens as the emotional centre of the home The role of texture: linen, stone, wood, panelling, marble and slipcovered furniture Why lighting is everything (there are never too many lamps!) The famous The Holiday cottage (devastatingly it wasn't actually real!!) French doors, open shelving, subway tile and the “collected over time” look How Nancy Meyers interiors balance elegance with practicality Design details mentioned: Rosehill Cottage from The HolidaySomething's Gotta Give Hamptons interiors It's Complicated California warmth and layered neutrals Open shelving, plate racks and hanging pot rails Linen curtains and textured neutral rugs Fresh flowers, bowls of lemons and “lived-in” styling Paint colours & references mentioned: Benjamin Moore: Gentle Cream, White Dove, Timid White Farrow & Ball: School House White, James White, Slipper Satin Fleetwood Prestige: Greene Street Ikea Stockholm sheer curtains Key takeaways: Nancy Meyers homes work because they prioritise practicality over perfection Texture and layering is crucial Great homes feel collected and lived in, not instantly finished Practical everyday objects can be part of the styling The goal isn't minimalism - it's comfort, character and ease This episode is essentially a masterclass in creating a home that feels timeless, welcoming and deeply liveable. Actress and comedian Lisa Ann Walter joins Sam to talk about becoming the “man of the house” when she was ten and what it means to finally have a “Nancy Meyers kitchen” of her own. They talk about what led her to be involved in the various LA unions, growing up without a female comedy role model, and why the skill of being able to talk to anyone is an amazing sense of security. They discuss the difference between resilience and stubbornness, doing Dancing with the Stars with Elaine Hendrix, the ex-husband who told her standup was “unfeminine”, and why she should have been doing comedy specials the past 30 years. Welcome back to another season of Hollywood Gold! Writer/director/producer Nancy Meyers joins us to discuss her cozy holiday classic, The Holiday. Masterfully shifting between sunny LA and the charming countryside of England, she discusses how the dual storylines made the crew feel like they were creating two different movies. With a focus on crafting female characters with "gumption," Nancy ensured that stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet not only represented modern womanhood, but also found perfect love interests in Jude Law and Jack Black, who shine as worthy partners. This lighthearted romantic comedy transformed into a holiday phenomenon, warming hearts across the world and becoming a must-watch holiday tradition nearly two decades later. Hosted on Acast. Ready for a holiday watch that actually holds up? We close the year with Jackie and Danielle from No More Late Fees and dig into why Nancy Meyers' The Holiday still hits. It's a rom-com where self-respect is the twist, friendship is the anchor, and charisma beats swagger every time. We trade Blockbuster memories for sharp analysis then get into what really matters: characters that feel real and show major growth. Is Iris and Arthur's bond the film's best relationship? When he tells her to stop acting like the best friend and be the leading lady, it sets the standard for us all! We unpack the hard pivot from pining to gumption, the realism of saying no to Jasper, and the quiet win of choosing yourself. On the other side, we explore why Jack Black's Miles works as a romantic lead: attention as attraction, care as chemistry, and a story that never turns his looks into a punchline. Jude Law's Graham gets dimension through grief, daughters, and unexpected softness. He's proof that charm can coexist with responsibility. We also tackle the messy, modern bits: the ethics of one-night stands versus real safety, smarter dating questions to avoid duplicity, and whether long-distance romance can survive airports and time zones. Along the way, we share fun trivia and reflections. If The Holiday is your seasonal ritual--or you're rom-com curious--you'll leave with new trivia, fresh angles, and, hopefully, a little extra courage to be the lead in your own story. “I just want to be loved… preferably by Christmas.” Join Ian, Liam (always listed second), Megs & Kev for our 310th episode as we swap mirror-lined jealousies and boxing-laden family dramas for frosted cottages, floppy fringes, and Nancy Meyers' warm, impractical kitchens with The Holiday (2006). Crack open the mulled wine, argue about accents, and prepare to answer the most important seasonal question of all: is this even a Christmas film… or is it secretly a New Year's movie pretending to care about tinsel? This week we discuss: Whether The Holiday qualifies as a Christmas film at all — or if it's really a New Year's movie wearing a festive jumper, pressed into service only because our Patreon members voted it in as the Christmas review. How Ian possibly survives reviewing a film starring Cameron Diaz — given his long, storied, and deeply felt loathing toward her screen presence. How Megs approaches a film built around Jack Black — an actor she famously does not enjoy - despite her choices of undergarments - especially when he's positioned as a romantic lead. Nancy Meyers' world-building — does the film ever show us emotion, or does it rely entirely on characters telling us exactly how they feel at all times? Cameron Diaz's Amanda — chaotic, guarded, and allergic to crying. Is this performance misunderstood… or exactly why Ian struggles? Kate Winslet's Iris — earnest, wounded, endlessly self-sacrificing. Is she the emotional heart of the film or a fantasy of suffering femininity? Jude Law's Graham — peak Meyers male fantasy, or walking red flag wrapped in knitwear? Jack Black's Miles — pretentious douchebag, charming underdog, or the film's secret emotional MVP? The dual-location structure — England vs. LA, coziness vs. confidence. Does the contrast deepen the story or just sell vibes? The film's relationship with grief, loneliness, and romantic recovery — is it sincere, or comfort-food cinema avoiding real mess? Kev weighs in on the soundtrack and score cues — emotional shorthand or effective storytelling tool? Can we get over the plotholes? Who goes to LA to visit a house sight unseen and who leaves their dog behind for someone else to look after? The ending(s) — festive payoff, narrative convenience, or emotional earnedness? Haven't they just chosen a false ending once you really look at it? And finally, whether The Holiday is the Best Film Ever — or simply the most aggressively rewatchable seasonal comfort movie ever made. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes clock in with "The Intern" (2015), Nancy Meyers' feel-good comedy starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy this one. Yes, it's sweet, uplifting, and maybe a little too saccharin at times, but it delivers exactly the warm, comforting tone it's aiming for. De Niro and Hathaway have fantastic chemistry, and the film's steady, upbeat vibe makes it one of the more genuinely pleasant modern studio comedies. The Mikes do take issue with a stretch of drama that arrives about halfway through the movie. It feels forced, a little too Hollywood, and somewhat undercuts the strength of Hathaway's character by the time the film wraps up. But, "The Intern" is an uplifting film about mentorship, connection, and finding purpose at any age, so it's easy to forgive the missteps.Overall, it's an easy watch, a charming film, and a reminder that sometimes “feel-good” doesn't have to be a bad thing.

While we're preparing new episodes, we're revisiting one of our favorite episodes: Annie Meyers-Shyer. A friend, and returning guest to the show, Annie has meticulously been documenting the renovation of her family's historic home in sunny Los Angeles on her instagram account, @thisoakhouse – and it's quickly become a fan favorite. So whether you're hearing it for the first time or revisiting, this episode is a must-listen.—Originally from LA, Annie comes from a life grown up in Hollywood, thanks to her filmmaking parents, the iconic writer, director and producer Nancy Meyers and her father, also a writer, director and producer, Charles Sheyer. Annie's love for design and fashion has followed her from a young age, as a fresh out of college editor at Harper's Bazaar to working on the PR team at Chanel, and has most recently landed her in the form of a modern day design oracle. How embarrassing, lil onions. Today, the siblings are unpacking a comedy of errors, and not even Nancy Meyers can keep them completely hypnotized with her charming writing: It's The Parent Trap (1998). Ross is obsessed with the film's iconic soundtrack and the biconic coupling of Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. Carie chokes on her rage over parents who are attentive yet somehow don't understand when a child has been replaced. Most of all, the siblings are impressed by the talent of little Lindsay Lohan in the role that brought us all her Macauley Culkin charms. SUPPORT US ON PATREON!
When hosting this holiday season, you need to know what's chic. You need to know what's classic. Annie and Hallie Meyers-Shyer know a thing or two about all of that, so Jordan and Max sit down with the sisters of Hollywood royalty to talk everything Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even some Hanukkah. What follows is an appetizer debate, a baked brie beatdown, a worse sweet potato casserole assault, Nancy Meyers' gravy recipe text (which we share below), and the French mashed potatoes to pour it all over. Plus, canned vs. homemade cranberry sauce, acceptable leftovers, the day after Meyers-Shyer sandwich, latke love, nog hate, the best sourdough loaf in LA, and was Jordan right or wrong about Max's Christmas tree? And as a holiday gift, enjoy Nancy Meyers' turkey gravy recipe as heard on the episode: Make the Broth 1. Cook the liver for the dog, or discard it. 2. Place the giblets, neck, carrots, celery, onion, and water in a pot. 3. Cook on a low flame for about 2 hours, covered. This becomes the beef broth for the gravy. 4. Turn off the heat and let it sit. It should not look too watery. Prepare the Pan Juices 1. When the turkey is done, remove it from the pan and place it on a cutting board. 2. Pour all the juices from the pan into a fat separator. 3. Remove the fat, then pour the juices back into the pan. Make the Gravy (over a medium/low heat) 1. Add 1 cup of the broth you cooked earlier into the pan with the juices. 2. Shake in a little Wondra flour to thicken the mixture. 3. Sprinkle in dry sage. 4. Add a pinch or two from one beef cube. 5. Season with dry sage, salt, and pepper. 6. Stir until the gravy reaches the consistency you like.
If Martha Stewart and Nancy Meyers had a baby with Wi-Fi, it would be Kenzie Elizabeth. She launched her YouTube channel at sixteen, turned hobbies into businesses (needlepoint! dinner parties! book club!), and built a home brand, Friend of Mine. Kenzie shares: How she became “all walk, no talk”: buying a house at 24, moving states, learning power tools, and deciding fast. Gut vs. anxiety: the practice she uses to hear her own voice over everyone else’s. The moment she realized she was people-pleasing in business—and shut down a brand to start Friend of Mine.Monetizing hobbies without losing joy: needlepoint canvases, hosting, gardening, reading, and more. Why she loves the internet (and doesn’t want to disappear when things get hard). Faith ≠ church: keeping a spiritual life while her relationship with religion evolves. Grief, friendship breakups, and who actually shows up. Gen Z x millennial hot takes: boundaries, therapy-speak, and the loneliness epidemic. Hosting 101: the “lazy girl” theme hack, real hostess gifts, and why a curated guest list is kindness. Nashville “signs,” answered prayers, and choosing ease when it appears. The business side: freelancers, fulfillment, and the surprising truth about who buys first. Podcast nerdery: best traits in a guest, overused phrases, and quick-fire hosting favorites. This week, the ladies welcome Atlanta interior designer and HGTV Dream Home alum Brian Patrick Flynn to the show. Brian shares how a decade-plus in production design shaped his approach to color, materials, and storytelling, plus how becoming a dad is refocusing his work closer to home. The conversation spans his House Tour with Ballard, the realities of designing for camera versus real life, why he loves 5000K bulbs (and we don't), and how he mixes fresh traditional with retro '80s cues without feeling theme-y. Brian also digs into set design secrets (continuity, multiple-scale props), candid career pivots, and a rapid-fire “in vs. out” on trends from beige and pleated shades to white houses with black trim. In this episode, Manika is joined by Maya (@bodegavanetta), a pop culture commentator and TikTok creator, for a cozy, spirited deep dive into the films of Nancy Meyers. The two kick things off reflecting on the golden age of tween girl movies and how the genre has all but disappeared. They reminisce about the joy and specificity of early 2000s hits like What a Girl Wants and Cadet Kelly, and mourn the loss of mid-budget coming-of-age stories that felt fun, earnest, and emotionally rich. Maya points out how today's film landscape leans heavily into aesthetics and “prestige,” often at the expense of heartfelt storytelling. What used to be a shared cultural experience is now fragmented by streaming platforms and driven by algorithms instead of vibes. The conversation naturally shifts to Nancy Meyers, a director whose work remains comforting, elegant, and emotionally layered. For both Manika and Maya, The Parent Trap was a formative film—one that shaped their ideas about family, womanhood, and storytelling. They discuss the film's complex emotional core, the fantasy of divorced parents reuniting, and how Lindsay Lohan's dual performance carries the movie with sincerity and charm. Meyers' attention to detail, especially in emotional beats and set design, is praised throughout the episode. From there, they move on to It's Complicated, a rom-com that embraces the messiness of middle-aged relationships and gives us a rare portrait of post-divorce desire. Manika and Maya appreciate the film's grounded portrayal of love and longing, noting how Meryl Streep's character is allowed to be flawed, funny, and desirable—something still too rare for women on screen. They reflect on how the film resists tying things up neatly and instead celebrates the freedom of ambiguity.Next up is The Holiday, another favorite for both. Maya highlights the significance of Jack Black being cast as a romantic lead and how that broke certain conventions around desirability in Hollywood. They talk about how The Holiday makes space for emotional vulnerability, friendship, and self-discovery, all while being set in two of the coziest cinematic homes of all time. The episode continues to explore how Meyers crafts stories that are aesthetically pleasing but never hollow—where the kitchens are iconic but so are the inner lives of her characters.Throughout the episode, Manika and Maya keep returning to the importance of joy in storytelling. They talk about how movies like Meyers' can be emotionally honest without being gritty, and why fun shouldn't be considered frivolous. The episode closes with a heartfelt appreciation for the way Nancy Meyers writes characters—especially women—who are allowed to be fully themselves: stylish, chaotic, competent, and full of longing.Maya's socialsTikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@b0dega.venetamaya and fola takes over the world https://open.spotify.com/show/3hewyYLxSyrspCZh9gxGk8Carrd https://b0degaveneta.carrd.co/Manika's SocialsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1CmokqeLIagz7nYQJfeRIwTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@manika3000?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1Podcast SocialsYouTube https://www.youtube.com/@ivebeenmeaningtowatchthatp2316Twitter: https://twitter.com/BeenMeaning2PodTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ivebeenmeaning2podFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Ive-Been-Meaning-To-Watch-That-113280083760521/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ivebeenmeaning2/Thank you so much for listening to the podcast.
