In episode 123 we set sail for a small, abandoned island which is infamous the world over. Once a quarantine station for plague victims in the 18th century, it later became home to a psychiatric hospital with disturbing rumours of mistreatment and eerie experiments. Over centuries, tens of thousands of lives ended here, their stories lost to time—but many believe their presence remains in the form of the ghosts that have claimed this island as their own. Originally released for Patreons in September 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 25th Patreon bonus podcast you join below Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile, where a historic close lies that was once a thriving community in it's own right. It was open to the skies above, and named, unusually for the 17th century for a woman who was the most successful businesswoman here until her death in 1644. The building of the Royal Exchange in the 18th century spelled the end for this place, and it would be, eventually, buried beneath the city streets, lost and unused. The close became shrouded in myths and urban legends; with terrifying tales of the ghosts that remain at the close they knew so well in life. A location we've already visited back in episode 18 of the podcast, but we're doing something a little bit special. In April 2024 I found a hard drive containing audio from four investigations that I conducted in 2011 and 2012. Dozens of hours of audio that I lost around a decade ago, and I thought was lost forever. These were four absolutely incredible locations, and I have covered all four investigations - minus the audio from that night - on the podcast previously. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever. June saw us at Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, July was the Edinburgh Dungeon, and last month we returned to York Guildhall. This time out it's time to once again return to Mary King's Close. The episode now includes over 2 hours and 15 minutes of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I descended beneath the city streets to investigate this tourist attraction that has found infamy, since it opened in 2003, and is now regarded as one of the most haunted places, in an incredibly haunted city. Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is Mary King's Close? In episode 120 we go in search of towering, hairy beasts that are said to stalk the wilderness. From the snow-covered slopes of the Himalayas to the dense forests of North America, reports of upright, ape-like creatures have refused to die, no matter how much science tries to bury them. In this episode, we're taking on the heavyweights of cryptid folklore — creatures with names so iconic they barely need introduction. As Monster Month continues, we venture into regions where oxygen runs thin, tracks disappear into the snow, and something might be watching from the tree line. We'll examine centuries of folklore, dig through expedition reports, and pick apart the so-called evidence that keeps the hunt alive. So join me this week as we go in search of the Yeti and Bigfoot. In episode 119 we continue Monster Month in style by going in search of one of the true behemoths in the world of cryptozoology. This time we're heading to the Scottish Highlands to look at one of the world's most famous mysteries. For decades, people have claimed to see something strange lurking in Loch Ness. From blurry photographs to sonar scans and eyewitness reports, the idea of a monster living in the loch has captured imaginations—and stirred up plenty of debate. So what's really going on? Is there something in the water, or is it all just a myth kept alive by hoaxes, the Scottish tourism industry, and hopeful thinking? Originally released for Patreon supporters in July 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 23rd Patreon bonus podcast we're doing something a little bit special. In April I found a hard drive containing audio from four investigations that I conducted in 2011 and 2012. Dozens of hours of audio that I lost around a decade ago, and I thought was lost forever. These were four absolutely incredible locations, and I have covered all four investigations - minus the audio from that night - on the podcast previously. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever, last month I covered Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, and this time out its time to once again enter Edinburgh Dungeon. And the episode now over two hours of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I investigated a building designed to scare, disgust and terrify. Creepy, lifelike mannequins made up like torture victims, or a cannibalistic feast. Actors telling stories of the darkest periods in the history of this city. However could it actually be haunted? I investigated this location a decade ago, and received the biggest fright of my life. Tonight, join me as, after dark, we dare to ask just how haunted is the Edinburgh Dungeon? In episode 116 we're revisiting what some might consider the scariest aspect of the paranormal – haunted dolls. Those, supposedly innocent, inanimate, companions of young children the world over, which may well be, in some cases, vessels for the dead. I am joined by Fiona Dodwell to discuss her new book - A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls: From Real Life to Literature and Movies – and find out about her own experiences with haunted dolls. In the 37th Patreon bonus podcast you rejoin me and fellow Newcastle-based folklore podcaster Icy Sedgwick at a building in Sunderland which dates back to the 1800s and was formerly a hospital during World War 1 providing care and treatment for the wounded and today is a theatre. But what would Icy and I experience, alongside our team of Ghost North East guests as the second part of our night gets underway? Would we hear the laughter, banging doors, or heavy footsteps that have been reported on previous investigations? Let's find out. In episode 115 we find ourselves in Lancashire at a building dating back to the early 16th century that was a location that a listener requested that I cover, and what a location it is. Considered by some to be one of the most haunted places in the county, and some would even consider it amongst the most active places in all of Britain. But is this truly the case, and who are the, in some cases very high profile ghosts that may be lurking here in the shadows? Let's find out. Join me, and Emma from the Weird Wiltshire Blog, and together let us ask, just how haunted is Rufford Old Hall? Thanks to Emma once again for being such a fantastic polterguest, and don't worry Emma fans, she'll be back later this year. Originally released for Patreons in June 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 22st Patreon bonus podcast we're doing something a little bit special. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever, starting with this month's episode which was originally released in October 2022, the second ever Patreon episode, which I have rewritten and re-recorded, and now includes almost 1 hour and 20 minutes of audio from that unforgetable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. Join my good friends John and Rich and I in the most haunted city on earth, as we stay overnight at a 17th century hotel. that has accommodated Hollywood stars and royalty. But would we manage to get a good night's sleep? Let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is Middlethorpe Hall Hotel? To get episodes such as this sooner, you can become a Patreon for £3 a month, and get yourself early access to episodes, and more exclusive episodes where Rob will conduct ghost hunts and you'll hear the audio from the night. A grandmother warns her grandchildren not to pick blackcurrants where they grow in a particular spot in the village. When asked why, she relates to them a strange piece of local history. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “AN EVENING'S ENTERTAINMENT" by M.R. James, 1925.TECHNICAL NOTE: I'm having some trouble with my recording microphone - probably to do with humidity. I ended up recording this story three times before I got a decent audio and there are even some rough parts in this one which I've done what I can with. Hopefully it won't affect your enjoyment too much.

In the 36th Patreon bonus podcast you join me and a fellow Geordie podcaster on location at a theatre in Sunderland which, beneath the curtain calls and festival accolades, hides a tangled past of war, transformation, and in more recent times chilling paranormal encounters. But what would Icy Sedgwick and I experience on this summer's night when the applause has faded and the shadows take center stage? Would we heard whispers from the dressing room? Would we hear the loud footsteps and banging doors that have been heard from the upper floors? Or perhaps we might be fortunate enough to encounter Alice, the mysterious spirit child said to roam the halls. Tonight, let us together ask the question, just how haunted is the Royalty Theatre? Episode 113 sees us continue our time in Edinburgh and we go deep into the history of a structure that has seen it all. Built on volcanic rock, it's been a royal residence, a military garrison, and a prison. It has held both noble prisoners and common criminals. It's been a site of public hangings, military sieges, and brutal interrogations. From medieval torture chambers to the execution of accused witches, this single building has seen more suffering than most cities do in a century. Tonight, we take a closer look at the dark history of one of the most visited landmarks in the UK. So join me and let us ask just how haunted is Edinburgh Castle? Enormous thanks to Wayne. Quite simply, it's a must-have for anyone seeking the perfect companion to explore the folklore of England's 39 historic counties. Packed with tales of ghosts, mermaids, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and more, it's an enchanting—and surprisingly hefty—addition to any bookshelf. In the 33rd Patreon bonus podcast I'm back in the Scottish borders, spending some time in the most northerly English town. This is a place that I have a huge fondness for, so much so, that this is a place I took you on a ghost walk last Halloween. You join me spending time here on a bit of a break, but despite this supposedly being a bit of rest and relaxation I couldn't resist grabbing my voice recorder and a torch and heading off to some of the spookier parts of this historic town after dark. Especially considering that listeners have made me aware of places here that I didn't even know are said to be haunted. So join me and let us ask, together, just how haunted is Berwick-upon-Tweed? In episode 107 I head north of the border to a stunning cemetery in Scotland's largest city. This city of the dead overlooks the city of the living, and its most prominent monument celebrates it's 200th birthday this year, predating the first burial here. With 50,000 of the city's dead buried here, it comes as no surprise that this place has long been rumoured to be haunted, but the best known supernatural entity said to lurk here in the darkness, is a vampire. A vampire which was so feared in the 1950s that school children descended on the graveyard with all manner of weapons, hell bent on putting an end to the monster. Let me tell you all about it, as you join me in asking, just how haunted is the Glasgow Necropolis? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. In episode 106 we bring our time in an incredible, yet horrifying city in Massachusetts to a close. The impact of the 1692 witch trials is evident at every turn for anyone fortunate enough to visit, especially around Halloween, as one listener took the time to tell me about, as you'll hear. This might be the final part of a trilogy of episodes, but there's so, so much left to tell you as we've eight more scary places to visit, and go deep into the history and ghost stories. So without further ado, join me and let us ask together for the third and final time, just how haunted is Salem? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. In the 32nd Patreon bonus podcast you join me in Teesside at a location which has served the town of Middlesbrough since 1889. An impressive building which has rose to infamy in recent years for its ghostly inhabitants, most famously that of a man who committed suicide while being held prisoner here. But what would happen when John, Tom and I dared to investigate this place, would we encounter the spirits said to lurk here within the darkness? So join me and let us ask, together, just how haunted is Middlesbrough Town Hall? Get access to the full episode right now at https://www.patreon.com/howhauntedpod. In episode 105 we continue our time across the pond in a city known the world over for the witch trials that occurred here in 1692. Fourteen women and five men were hanged, at least five people died while in disease infested prison while awaiting trial for witchcraft, and an 81 year old man was crushed to death. All of them were completely innocent. Its little wonder that this place is associated with the supernatural and paranormal, and there are so, so many places within this town rumoured to be haunted. This time I will take you on a guided tour of ten of them. So join me and let us once again ask together, just how haunted is Salem? Support How Haunted? by subscribing and leaving a review. Originally released for Patreons in March 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 19th Patreon bonus podcast you join me as I investigate a building dating from 1825, which is today the largest independent library outside of London. This was the first public building lit by an electric lightbulb and in 1830 a mummy from Egypt was unwrapped right here. But what would happen when, joined by fellow Geordie podcaster, Icy Sedgwick, we attended a fundraising ghost hunt at this historic location in our home town. Some have claimed that this building could be the home of 16 individual spirits, including a former librarian who still the flicks through the books after dark. So tonight, join me as together ask, just how haunted is the Lit & Phil. In episode 104 we begin a very, very special trilogy of episodes in which we'll head to the USA, to somewhere synonymous with all things creepy, ghostly, and witchy. This place was the scene of unease, irrational panic, and mass hysteria in the late 17th century, and what followed has left a stain on this town In this episode I will speak to an expert on the witch trials of 1692, and the legacy left by the murder of 14 women and 6 men, all of whom were guilty of nothing whatsoever. I will then guide you on a tour through the haunted locations to be found here, and in this episode, and the two that will follow – we will visit over 20 locations, as fascinating as they are terrifying. So join me and let us ask together, just how haunted is Salem? Thanks so much to Liah for her incredible insight into the Witch Trials that occurred here, and being so generous with her time.
